Pokrzyw's Empire Army - Month 4 - Calm and madness - Rank and File 3 (290pts) - OWAC IX

"Tileans are the best crossbowmans in the Old World, of course the price of hiring a regiment is also impresive.

"Flaggelants are travelers across the Empire, joining armies as they march to battle. Their madness gives them superhuman strength and resilence. They fight with fury and determination beliving in doom of the world."

Plans for April:

I lost March month and try go get back to business. Flaggelants looks to be easy win, tileans are a bonus from previous week. Both units has a place in my heart as both units were present in my best and only one playing this army in 5th edition.

Realization:

I don't remember how hard was yellow colour in the pre-contrast times ;) I'm not very proud of effects, but still not bad from the distance. As I predict flaggelants painting was really fast, tileans take more attention. I'm far away from my workshop and I forget to take the banner for tileans. It would be added in next days.

Gallery:

Flaggelants rear part ;)

Saint book could be effective weapon

The same vibe as dwarven slayers

Hold the line

Aim

Green feathers break a little bit yellows and reds

Points:

  • 15 flaggelants  - 150pts
  • 12 crossbowmans (light armour, banner, musician) - 140pts

Plans for May:

halflings..halflings..

Sybou_Month 3_OWAC VIII_Rank & files_ Crossbowmen from the fur guild (190 points)

 Hello everyone,

I finished month 3 in extremis with my crossbowmen.

I'm glad they are finished but I don't have much infantry left to finish the challenge.

Led by a merchant specialized in fur trading and textile, he's a bit of a coward. When the Baron called to arms the different guilds, the textile guild answered with some crossbowmen.

He just wanted to stay behind and avoid the big fights.

He brought some tilean mercenaries and a couple of hunters in order to protect his interests.

The merchant boss

Here he's surrounded by a happy street performer who joined the company to bring music and monkey dancing. On the other side, the Bounty hunter with no name protects the back of the merchant as long as he s getting paid.

Perfect tileans dogs of war, the middle one went full Braganza's style. The gamekeeper is a specialized hunter using traps.

Hunters and soldiers challenged themselves in taking down the most ennemies in battle.

The classic mercenaries with crossbows. They're all pretty good soldiers with good equipments and weapons.

Pointwise:

18 men with a musician so it's 190 points.

That's it for the 3rd month, a bunch of shooters ready to march for the Baron (only when needed).

For my next month, i'll go for my wildcard month:

Cannons and wizard.

Here we go, thank you for reading me. I hope you enjoyed the miniatures.

Cheers,

Jaeckel's Castle Wittgenstein - The Guards

A modest beginning with 10 masked crossbowmen, defending Castle Wittgenstein. To hide their corruption, they're all wearing full-face masks. Not ideal to have a beer!

'Death on the Reik' illlustration by Martin McKenna

In terms of colours, the overall scheme is pretty dull. Wittgenstein Barony being part of the Reikland, I have opted for a dirty white base for the uniforms, sometimes complemented by black stripes... The rare glimpses of diseased flesh have received a basecoat of Vallejo Game Color Tan, shaded with Dark fleshtone and Violet ink, and highlighted with Dead flesh and light blue. I've also changed my recipe for NMM, using neutral instead of bluish greys. Can't say it improves the gloomy feeling!

First you'll recognize the guard model proposed in the original scenario pack, painted 3 times 😜

Then come Men-At-Arms and Mercenaries (Citadel C26 and F4). Only two are original miniatures:

The other ones are simple conversions with head swaps, and helmet extensions:

And that's it for January!

The plan is a second batch of guards for February.

JohnR's 252 points, not bad for an evening's work.

Rank & File month #2

 I'm kidding of course.

Actually this month was a bit of a slog so I'm pretty happy to have added 22 mini's to the army:

It helped that the crossbowmen were started in January :)

These comprise the bulk of the army's missile troops and are used as skirmishers, or to support the infantry blocks in battle. As such they don't have their own command groups, though I might add these later.

10 Tilean Crossbowmen (+2 missile elite), light armour and crossbows: 120 points.

12 Estalian Bandolleros Gringos (+1 missile elite), light armour and handguns: 132 points.

Total: 252 points

Onward and upward, bring it on March !

Brennan's Wrap-up Post (1,203 points)

Hello!  Well this is the end of my third OWAC and I'm excited to get through this chunk of the old lead pile.  First I want to thank the Overlord and all the other folks who have supported the challenge.  It has been a difficult year, but this part has been as good as ever and I appreciate that.

On to the final pictures!  Worksite army photo below...

10 Iron Breakers with Musician and Standard: 240 pts

10 Crossbowmen: 130 pts

16 Longbeards with Musician and Standard: 270 pts

21 Warriors with Musician and Standard: 253 pts

2 Bolt Throwers: 120 pts

1 Dwarf Hero Heavy Armor and Double Handed Weapon: 109 pts
1 Runesmith w/ Heavy Armor (under his clothes ;)): 81

So this was fun.  I haven't done a heavily armored force for the OWAC yet and it had been a while since I had done this much armor anyway.  I tried to keep it bright but with one finger on reality.  I wanted a good bit of contrast from the orcs and gobs I have been working on.  I think fantasy, or sci-fi, works best when there is a hint of reality to keep the brain anchored.  Otherwise, you just descend into a computer generated realm of disbelief...

Well this is me signing off for about 6 months!  Paint well and be excellent to each other...

Brennan's March Post - The Wooden Gun Line (250 Points)

Hello!

Well, it's March and I live near a US Covid hot spot so I'm trying to keep everybody far away from me!  So, I've painted up a wooden gun line and stopped taking the showers.  More on the paint below...

As these fellas aren't elite, I've gone for a simpler paint scheme, especially on the armor.  I kept the color scheme on the tabards to help pull the look of the whole force together.

I got a comment last time, positive, on the color of the skin.  I've always liked a browner tone for dwarves.  I'm not sure why, but it has an earthy feel that I think suits them.  I know lost of folks like the very light and ruddy skin tones, but I tend to save those for elves.

First up are the bolt throwers.  In 4th ed we called them SAMs... because of a certain magic rune.  I like how in 3rd they are more like battalion guns, get lots of them and they have a moderate effect.

Next up at the 10 xbows.  Those 2 Marauder miniatures in the unit were fantastic to paint.  The older Citadel were fun too, but there was something really nice about the Marauder figs, maybe the extra details.

Well here we are:
120 for two bolt throwers
130 for 10 xbows
250 for the month!

Ummmm....  next up on the painting table?  Well, its work dependent.  With being at home, I might paint up two character models and make it easy, or I might take on Prince Ulthars...

Paul's Border Princes - Month One (290 points)

And..... I'm spent. Maybe now I can sleep better without feeling like I need to get up and apply ink washes to nearly 30 minis at 4 am...

I felt I needed to achieve two things with my first month's entry. 1) Settle on the core colour scheme for the army 2) Get a big batch of the monopose plastics out of the way. The missile troops rather selected themselves as I get a bit of variation in painting the uniforms and it will be a big block of troops under my belt.

It took some deliberation to settle on the colour scheme. Initially I considered having my human contingent in the tan leather and canvas green of the militia of Felmoor in my ongoing D&D campaign, but that was just a bit too dull for the OWAC and I didn't want my Halflings and Dwarves having to pick up those colours to keep consistency with the army overall. In the end I went for the entirely unadventurous Dark Red and Cream (with mid brown leather work and dark wood for contrast) as this is both utilitarian in terms of the models being used in lots of different games, and having a slightly historical/crusader type feel to it which will fit the army theme better. I do paint a lot of red though so part of me thinks I should have chosen something else.

I call this colour palette 'Ham and Tomato on Rye'

Ah well - the die is cast now and I'm not unhappy with the resulting colour scheme. The most important thing is that they are getting painted! :D

But then almost immediately I changed my army list, even if only slightly. I decided I only wanted two units of 10 rather than three units of 7 archers. This was partly influenced by finding/remembering that one of the archers was missing his helmet plume so looks like the odd one out, and partly as it would mean only needing to do two variations on the colour scheme for the archers uniforms rather than three.

A minor set back, but worth doing
However, that meant I needed to rebase three archers so they were in the same alignment as their fellows so out came the clippers and back on the work bench they went. These Battle Masters plastics are never going to be amazing looking models but they should at least all be facing the right way in battle ;)

10 Archers #1

10 Archers #2

Nine Crossbowmen
Here is the tally for month one:

10 Archers (with Light Armour, Longbows, Hand Weapons) - 100 pts

10 Archers (with Light Armour, Longbows, Hand Weapons) - 100 pts

9 Crossbowmen (with Light Armour, Crossbows, Hand Weapons) - 90 pts

Month One Total - 290 pts.

Things I have learnt this month. BM plastics do have their charm, but as is obvious from some of these photos they also have some horrendous mould lines and slippage issues at times. The other thing I found is that the plastic they are made from really doesn't like paint, and the (different) white primer both I, and whoever owned half this bunch before me, used doesn't like it either. I found myself constantly having to touch up the bows in particular as the brown was rubbing off back to the white. People often say you can't polish a turd. I'll say you can but it takes an awful lot of gloss varnish.

Did someone say stretch goals!?

I also managed to get one small piece of scenery done as a stretch goal after it was suggested on the fb group. This is one of those pewter souvenir pieces from a museum stuck on top of a plaster cake column but it will do nicely as a campaign trophy being used as a road side mile stone.

I'm absolutely, positively sure I won't need to buy any more minis for this OWAC now...
Finally, in true OWAC style I have made another change to my starting list and purchased a Grand Master of the Knight's Panther to act as my army General - the renegade Knight mentioned in my opening post as ruling the area of the Border Princes these sorry sons of dogs are from.

Huzzah! Onward to month two!

Brennan's Dwarves - Intro Post

Hello!

Well I'm back again for another round.  I had a very hard time deciding what to paint this year.  I debated doing another round of Slann.  Which would be fun, but the two other painters local to me, were painting up 4th ed armies.  I thought about doing more with my Orcs and Gobbos, which is great army in 4th, but I also had other projects that were calling out for my attention.  That landed me on Dwarves.  I have a third ed dwarf army that I have played with off and on.  I really enjoy dwarves in third because they aren't as slow as they are in other additions, primarily due to encumbrance rules and how they affect other races.  However, in 4th dwarves reward players who use the special troops types, this is mainly because clansmen can't have heavy armor and are not required troops.  BUT they will feature heavily in my list because, I like the figs.

So, I'm going to be doing an army with a fair number of imperial dwarf figures from the Citadel range and Marauder dwarves that I hope match the theme well.  I'm not going to have many puff and pike dwarves, not because I don't like them, but I'm hoping that this army will have a consistent look, like a separate brigade in the army.  So there will be a consistent color scheme but, hopefully it won't look like a uniform.

We will just have to wait to see how that turns out!

10 Iron Breakers with musician and standard: 240 pts

10 Crossbowmen: 130

16 Longbeards with musician and standard: 270 pts

2 Bolt throwers, with light armor for the crew: 120 pts

1 Dwarf Hero Heavy Armor and Double Handed Weapon (109) and 1 Runesmith w/ Heavy Armor (81)

All together now!  For 1,203 Points!
