Paul D's army shot for the end of OWAC V

Having reviewed my efforts whilst taking these pictures I'm coming round to the idea that my struggles with getting them finished - was me, rather than the army choice, my mojo just simply evaporated in the last couple of months, and the only thing that got me there was sheer bloody grit (obviously, that's the Scot/northerner in me). So on with the show - a few close-ups of individuals and units to show off all my shaky brush work and casting lines I didn't file away.

First up, a general shot of the army without my face looming over it.

Ashigaru, hopefully, when it comes to actually playing with these chaps they'll provide a steady stream of bowfire.

One of my Samurai units - to slice and dice

A second Asigaru unit - you can never have enough bows

The mounted samurai to provide a mobile reserve

More ashigaru carrying more bows

A second unit of samurai to hold the other flank.

Finally, a photo of the army with my army pose!

Oh, and if you look very carefully, you might even find a ninga, good luck.

Next year for the tenth BOYL, these boys and girls will be playing the part of the rescue party of a big game, played over the course of the weekend, I've been planning for a number of years. So, if you're going to be there and want to play the part of a chaos wizard (wishing to commune with his god), a hard bitten Imperial captain (hoping to survive, until he retires), an ogre mercenary (looking for work), a gang of giants (looking for trouble), a family of trolls (on a camping trip), a band of wolf riders (escorting the wizard and his entourage), a clan of barbarians (bent on revenge) or an army of black orcs (playing the part of the local heavies), the choice is yours and if, the wizard makes the appropriate sacrifice there might even be a demon horde (next years OWAC), let me know? All will be catered for, with individual missions and targets over the course of the weekend!

My challenge for next year a Chaos undivided lesser demon horde, who could  show up in the game, if, the rescue party doesn't do their job! All inspired by previous entries, see you all next year.

ZeroTwentythree's May Undead (333 pts)

May Entry

Rank & File Month

As explained in my intro post, aside from Donovan, the other big inspiration for painting undead for this OWAC was my purchase of three Carrion from a semi-recent Knightmare Games Kickstarter. Awesome looking figures, but a bear to assemble! I kept putting them off and figured that an OWAC project would help motivate me into it... or retiring in shame to the Field of Bones.

Apparently it worked! Although it did come down to the later end of the OWAC before I finally picked up drill & wire & glue and finally got them prepped. So now I subject you to excessive photos in celebration of finally completing the death turkeys!

The one that gave me the most trouble is also my favorite, the one with feathered wings. My favorite rider, though, is the one with the outstretched scythe, on the right in the first photo. Feathery puts me in a mood...

And just for laughs....

I previously painted  an Overlord miniature. When the figure on the right, from Oldschool Miniatures, arrived I figured it was the perfect Assistant Overlord! Here are both of them, at the Field of Bones, discussing the fine print of the Old World Army Challenge Rules. (Actually, more like what you'd call guidelines...).

Finally, I managed to get the rest of this month's entry done at the last minute thanks to and in spite of the US Memorial Day holiday weekend. Five more Death Riders. Slightly different variety of flamingo served as the inspiration for these.

This figure was painted earlier, but I didn't want to reveal it until the rest were done. This was my first test model for the flamingo cavalry. Although I liked the idea, I decided I didn't want full squads of Necron 99/Peace inspired cav, so he will serve as a champion.

In spite of the last minute rush to finish painting, I still had time to relax by a fire on a beautiful Spring night and contemplate the completion of the OWAC next month.

May Rank & File Month

3 Carrion........................................................ 135 pts
1 Assistant Overlord (lv. 5 necromancer).....   60 pts
6 Death Riders w/Lances, Shields................   138 pts

May Total: 333 pts
Total So Far: 1,466 pts

JohnR's Estalians - Heroes of Might and Magic (632 pts)

 Leaders (and cannon) Month.

Born the penniless son of Estalian fruit sellers, Diego Monte decided at an early age that peddling oranges in poverty wasn't for him and ran away to seek his fortune in the New World.

Decades later, Don Diego El Comte Del Monte (as he now calls himself) has returned. Commander of  the Galleon 'War Bastard' and captain of a powerful mercenary company.

Del Monte (pictured here with his army standard bearer Matias) is everything a mercenary captain should be: ruthless and brave but with a strong streak of pragmatism and a keen sense of self preservation.

This month I painted command groups for the crossbowmen and handgunners too:

Crossbowmen

Handgunners

The army has also acquired a cannon - probably from the deck of the War Bastard.

The cannon's name is Isabella. (She's named after the gun captain's eldest daughter). She's powerful and dangerous and the gun crew love her, though they admit she's pretty ugly. The cannon's not that good looking either.

Accompanying the army is the Magister Santiago Espinosa 'The Fray Bentos' and his assistant Pedro.

'Fray Bentos' is an honorary title from the Estalian College of Sorcery, of which Espinosa is a senior member. His years of study have given him great power but recently he has become obsessed with his own mortality and has begun to dabble in the dark arts in an attempt to delay the inevitable. So far Espinosa has managed to keep his new knowledge secret, though it has cost him an apprentice.

Pedro is Espinosa's new apprentice. He suspects that his predecessor might have learned an unpleasant secret about his master and that his death may not have been an accident. Pedro is clever and ambitious and determined not to suffer the same fate.

El Comte Del Monte: Level 20 Human Hero, light armour, shield, warhorse: 114 points
Matias: Level 5 Hero, light armour, shield, warhorse, army standard: 89 points

2x Tilean Crossbowmen (+2 Missile Elite) inc Standard : 36 points

2x Bandolleros Gringos (+1 Missile Elite) inc Standard: 33 points

'Isabella': 3 Man Cannon: 60 points

The Fray Bentos: Level 20 Human Wizard: 240 points
Espinosa knows the following spells: Battle Magic 1: Leg Breaking, Ignite Missiles, Enthuse, Cause Animosity. Battle Magic 2: Raze, Lightning Bolt. Battle Magic 3: Animate Sword, Cause Fear. Necromantic 1: Hand of Death, Zone of Life. Necromantic 2: Control Undead. Necromantic 3: Life in Death.

Pedro: Level 5 Human Wizard: 60 points
Pedro Knows the following spells: Battle Magic 1: Immunity from Poison, Cause Animosity, Fireball.

Here's how the army looks now:

I've almost run out of stuff to paint. I had planned to add a couple more regiments to the army but they're not Estalians and I'm worried that they won't really fit. Maybe I'll just mulligan June :-)

Paul D/ Golgfag1's April's contingent - Heroes and Wizards (1186 points)

March found me with plenty of time on my hands to plough on with my efforts to give Mr Beales a run for his money, all due to Covid19, inclement weather and having to take holiday entitlement - found me completing my initial intentions, thus I posted a good week in advance of the end of the month.  Following the March post and a little light hearted banter between myself and Mr Beale, I decided rather than take a break over April, I'd push on with the next contingent of wizards and Heroes and then go off and do something else.

First up, a Colossal Lord lord from Grenadier  Miniatures  - Cassandra https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~tpope/sol/grenadier/images/3304.jpg

I wasn't sure on the colour schemce so plumbed for classic Wonder woman, be it Linda Carter or Gal Gadot - red, white and blue, where I could, with bronze armour (vambrace and pauldrons) and a chainlink hauberk. I apologies now - the miniature is from a time when attitudes were different, but I'm not a revisionist and accept it for what it is.

Quite happy with the way she turned out, will be using her as a giantess for a steady two hundred points.

Next up a few low level wizards, Original Citadel C series Sisterhood novices/Initates, classing these as Warhammer third edition, level fives' at sixty points each - for three hundred points.

Next up a Sisterhood Mage, I'll class her as a level fifteen wizard for one hundred and fifty five points.

The mother Samatha figure's rather nice, so I'll run for another level fifteen wizard for another one hundred and fifty five points.

I've also dabbed a little paint over four nobles, I don't have enough of these to form a regiment so will be using them as champions for my other units at thirty points each, giving me another hundred and twenty points.

Last, but by no means least, the Goddess Rigg, now I'll be honest I consider this figure the worst of the C series Amazonian figures and thus I'm not inclined to use it as such, so am simply going to class it as a female ogre champion, for a minimal two and fifty six points (I intend to expand this idea latter in the challenge, with a contingent of female ogres!).

Finally a group shot all varnished and based to match the previous months contingents.

Next month - cavalry and beasties
