1/144 Gloster Gladiator 'Mediterranean & Middle East' - Mark I (LIMITED EDITION)

1/144  Gloster Gladiator 'Mediterranean & Middle East' - Mark I (LIMITED EDITION)

This injection-moulded kit contains 37 parts and one clear part (cockpit canopy). A comprehensive instruction leaflet and a decal sheet are included.

The Gloster Gladiator was a British-built biplane fighter developed from the Gauntlet and its prototype, designated the SS.37, flew in September 1934. The first production model was the Mk.I, which became operational in January 1937. An improved Mk.II version followed in 1938 and eventually 270 aircraft of this Mark were built.

The Gladiator was a single-seat biplane of metal construction with mixed metal and fabric covering. It was fitted with a fixed undercarriage and powered by a Mercury radial engine turning two-blade wooden or three-blade metal propeller. Its armament consisted of four guns, of which two were mounted in the fuselage and two under the lower wings.

The Gladiator was the RAF's last biplane fighter aircraft and the first with an enclosed cockpit. Although rendered obsolete by newer monoplane designs, it proved good in initial combats and saw action in almost all theatres during the WWII.

Gladiators (both the Mk.I and Mk.II versions) were successfully exported to many countries and saw service with more than 15 air arms, including those of Belgium, China, Egypt, Finland, Free France, Greece, Iraq, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania and Norway. They also equipped RAAF and SAAF squadrons in the Middle East and North Africa and flew in secondary roles such as Meteorological Flights.

RAF's No.80 Sq. Gladiators saw action during Italian Campaign in Greece in 1940/41, while the very first two Hellenic Air Force aircraft were donated by the Greek expatriate Stylianos Sarpakis in 1938. The Royal Iraqi Air Force took delivery of 30 Gladiators between 1937 and 1944, plus eight supplied as spares.

Colour schemes included in the kit:

1) Gloster Gladiator Mk.I, K7903, No.80 Sq., RAF, Ismailia airfield, Egypt, late 1938

2) Gloster Gladiator Mk.II, N5832, No.80 Sq., RAF, Larissa airfield, Greece, December 1940

3) Gloster Gladiator Mk.I, s/n DS1 'Stylianos Sarpakis? and DS2 'Santorini Thira?,

Royal Hellenic Air Force (Elliniki Vasiliki Aeroporia), Eleusis airfield, Greece, 1938-39

1/144 Hawker Tempest F.6 'Middle East Operations' - Mark I

1/144 Hawker Tempest F.6 'Middle East Operations' - Mark I

The Hawker Tempest Mk.VI was the RAF's piston-engined fighter, which evolved as a Mk.V development with a more powerful Sabre V engine. Its prototype first flew in May 1944, while the first aircraft were available in July & August 1945.

As with other Tempests, Mk.VI orders were reduced when the war ended, of 300 plus aircraft only 142 were actually built. They were delivered to five RAF squadrons in the Middle East in 1946/47 to   Nos.247 and 6 Squadrons being the first, followed by Nos. 213, 8 and 39.

The Tempest Mk.VI was a single-seat monoplane aircraft, of all metal construction, powered by a Napier Sabre V or VA engine. DH or Rotol four-bladed propellers were used. It featured a bubble canopy and a retractable undercarriage. Compared to the Mk.V it had carburettor air intakes repositioned to the wing roots, oil cooler placed behind the the coolant radiator and additional oil coolant radiator installed in the starboard wing. It was fitted with four 20mm Hispano cannons in the wings and it could carry 45-gal or 90-gal drop tanks. The Tempest could also perform as a fighter-bomber, carrying a wide variety of bombs up to 1000 lbs.

The Tempest Mk.VIs (re-designated F Mk.6 in mid-1947) were involved in such delicate actions in the ME region, such as Canal Zone defence, the British Palestine handover, Israeli-Egyptian hostilities and unrests in Iraq and Eritrea. By March 1950 all the units gave up their Tempests.

Colour schemes included in the kit:

1) Hawker Tempest F Mk.6, NX129, Sky JV-D, No.6 Sq., Royal Air Force, RAF Station Khartoum, Sudan, spring 1948

2) Hawker Tempest F Mk.6, NX143, Red GN-H, No.249 'Gold Coast' Sq., Royal Air Force, Habbaniya Air Base, Iraq, 1947

3) Hawker Tempest F Mk.6, NX151, White E, No.213 'Ceylon' Sq., Royal Air Force, RAF Station Deversoir (Abu Sultan), Egypt, 1949

4) Hawker Tempest F Mk.6, NX135, Black V, No.6 Sq., Royal Air Force, detachment at RAF Station Nicosia, Cyprus, early 1949

This injection-moulded kit (one model is included) containing

  • 37 plastic injected parts,
  • 3 resin parts (the wing, the radiator and a Pitot tube)
  •  one clear part (the cockpit canopy).
  • A comprehensive decal sheet is included.

1/144 Percival PROVOST T.1 / T.53 British trainer - Miniwings

1/144 Percival PROVOST T.1 / T.53  British trainer - Miniwings

A nice little injected plastic key of a classic british trainer, up to the usual sminiwings standards. You will note some of the fine details on this release - of particular note is the quality of the canopy and how thin the glazing is for such a small piece in this scale!

Two kits are provided in this boxed edition

During the 1950s, the Provost was developed for the Royal Air Force (RAF) as a replacement for the Percival Prentice. The Provost was an all-metal, single-engined, two-seat monoplane, featuring fixed conventional landing gear with a fully-castering tailwheel. It was developed to provide training that was better-suited to the increasingly-complicated operational aircraft that were then being brought into service. The main two seats in the cockpit were positioned in a side-by-side configuration, enabling the instructor to sit directly alongside the student, easing training by allowing for mutual close observation and for flight procedures to be more readily demonstrated; a third seat had been originally specified for use by an observer, but this position was later omitted following little use.[6] The cockpit was considered to be relatively bulky amongst its contemporary rivals, a feature that did not heavily impinge upon the aircraft's overall performance.[3] The type was designed to be easy to maintain; various components were intentionally interchangeable where possible and there was a generous provision of access hatches in the fuselage.
