1/144 Geschutzwagen IVb in ABS-L - Kampfflieger by CGD

1/144 Geschutzwagen IVb in ABS-L - Kampfflieger by CGD
Towards the end of September 1939, Krupp designed the "first real self-propelled artillery piece", the Sonderkraftfahrzeug 165/1 (Special Purpose Vehicle 165/1, abbreviated Sd.Kfz. 165/1). After a series of tests, the Sd.Kfz. 165/1 was accepted by the Wehrmacht in early January 1940. In 1941, Krupp built prototype vehicles armed with the 105 mm leichte Feldhaubitze 18/1 L/28 (light field howitzer 18/1 L/28, abbreviated leFH 18/1 L/28) cannon based on a modified Panzer IV chassis. The prototypes were fitted with a smaller six-cylinder Maybach HL66P engine, which had a power capacity of 188 hp (140 kW). Although 200 vehicles were ordered, Krupp completed only 10 prototypes in the final four months of 1942. These saw service on the Eastern Front.

Designed by Kampfflieger, here produced in a special edition by CGS in ABS-L

1/144 Gotha P.60a - Kampfflieger

1/144 Gotha P.60a - Kampfflieger
Kampflieger is adding to his stable of Luft'46 Designs, with this Gotha P.60a with its under and over twin engined configuration and tricycle undercarriage (on a mini sprue for placement if your wondering why it looks a little odd above). Its low profile is due to its "prone" pilot position employed in some of the earlier Horton Trials and even the later Meteor F8 Prone Flight Tests.

Available now.

1/144 Curtiss P-55J Jet Ascender - Kampflieger

1/144 Curtiss P-55J Jet Ascender - Kampflieger
Another issue from Kampfflieger that has piqued my interest. This time an US experimental item that looks like it would be equally at home in Crimson Skies, or a Flash Gordon movie as on a USAF'46 flightline roster!

Clearly, its based upon the experimental Curtis P-55 Ascender developed in 1943, which is a fun little aircraft in its own right. Only now taken further this little "What If" project coudl quite easily have made it into the skies over Europe to do battle with the staffels of Luft'46 project (or even the iconic Me-262), of the J7W2 Shinden-Kai over the Japanese Home Islands?

Available directly from Kampffliegers Shapeways Store in two formats:
1/144 Curtiss P-55J Jet Ascender "Wheels Up",
1/144 Curtiss P-55J Jet Ascender "Wheelss Down"

Be sure also to support other Shapeways Producers of  1/144 and  144th , as orders can be combined.

1/144 Bristol Beaufort - Peters Planes

1/144 Bristol Beaufort -  Peters Planes
Featuring more of the Peters Planes range of model kits this week we have a couple more familiar marks and and unique items!

The Bristol Beaufort is the on one on 1/144 I can recall in either injection or resin garage kits, its yet another area that both the big companies and the gashapon makers have over looked to date.

The Bristol Beaufort is design that builds on the earlier Bristol Blenheim, the Beaufort was designed as a Torpedo bomber and was used extensively in the early war period in the Mediterranean Theatre of Operation and in general by RAF Coastal Command. It also had a significant role in the Pacific Theatre where it operated by the RAAF (Royal Australian Air force) and where interesting most of where also built under license there (like this kit!).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol_Beaufort

There are two Marks to choose from when ordering, a Mk.II or a Mk.VIII (see pictures). Also there is a choice of either vacform windows for all the glazing or solid resin plugs. The solid resin glazing  will require painting and the vacform glazing will require cutting and trimming and glueing (along with detailing these areas as desired). The kit also comes with two White metal props.

The Mk.VIII has fully enclosed undercarriage wheels when retracted as compared to the partially exposed ones on the Mk.II and so has different engine nacelles and undercarriage doors. The tail of the Mk.VIII is also enlarged

NEW price for a basic plane for wargaming purposes. Comes with solid resin glazing (NO vacform canopies), NO undercarriage (doors in closed position),  NO props but does still come with your choice of decals for A$15. (The versions shown here is the "Gold Kit"**)

See the Peters Planes website (Home) for details, and also the Peters Planes Beaufort (Page) for more info and contact details. (**please note: the YAGI Radio aerials are not included in this kit)

1/144 Supermarine Spitfire MK.VIII (New Tooling) - Peters Planes

1/144 Supermarine Spitfire MK.VIII - Peters Planes
Also produced is a Supermarine Spitfire MK.VIII with the the option also of a "Wargamer" option, the 'Gold kit' has been discontinued due to the forthcoming Eduard Series kit. Although  the  "Wargamers" option is the more basic kit with solid resin glazing (NO vacform canopies), NO prop blades (spinner only), NO undercarriage (doors in closed/flying position only), it does have a new refined master retooled by Kampflieger for Peters Planes! I think you will find this much more apealing fromt an the astetic and production perspective.

http://www.petersplanes.com/avions/Spitfire/Mk%20XIVe/XIVe.htm

Also,  do not forgot about the the Spitfire Mk.XIVe  also produced by Peters Planes as it is one of the best 1/144 kits and rivals not only any other 1/144 Spitfire, but also a great many kits besides produced  in resin or plastic. ( see previous KG144 review of the Peters Plane Spitfire XIVe - ( Here Painted)  and (Here Master) .

1/144 Dornier Do-17z Kits by Petersplanes

1/144 Dornier Do-17z Kits by Petersplanes

Peter has been busily beavering away on his excellent line of 1/144 aircraft originally seeking out opportunity for under represented seaplanes, the range has also been extended to cover aircraft flown by the RAF and in particular RAAF (Royal Australian Air force) and with the Do-17z marks a move into other under represented aircraft with one of the 'elephants in the room' being a lack of a Do-17 Kit.

Peters Planes can supply this model to you in two formats:

1) "WarGamer" - this is the simplest option available cast for those who require their models to be either robust or similar to build in this case a mere 9 pieces and to be shown stand mounted.

2) "Gold Series" - this is for those who prefer more of a challenge or wish to put the time and effort into a more complex build, often with a choice of marks or variants available with which to complete your kit. The Gold series as seen also come with other value added parts such as white metal props and the option of solid canopies (or, do be used for heat basing vac canopies) and two sets of vac form canopies (in case of trimming 'issues')

Both kits have been mastered using 3D CAD Software and a master produced to then undertake a more tradition casting process, a vacuum pump is used remove the trapped air from the mold to ensure that no bubbles are present in the final cast. I think that you can tell that this provides a nice degree of detailing on both formats of the kit as can bee seen from the photos above, and collective both options produce a very fine looking aircraft.

Peterplanes recommend 'Gator Glue' or similar PVA glue for the vac-form pieces with your favoured glue for the resin cast items (CA etc)

A set of decals are provided also.

The Peters Planes Homepage can be found [ here ], with the link to the Dornier Do-17z below:

1/144 TsAGI A-12 autogyro

1/144 TsAGI A-12 autogyro
Another busy issuer of aircraft is the  Kampfflieger, who when not producing a fleet of WWI aircraft takes some time out to issue some of the more interesting and unusual designs. This time an autogiro, a mode of transport that once was the poster boy of the the 1930s modernist dream and science fiction icon for a modern transport system of the future. It featured in films of the era such as 'Metropolis' and 'Things to Come' and countless printed images.

Initially having a passing resemblance to the Ceirva C.30 this Russian design is an unrelated design that would look great next to your Anigrand Autogiros, or on your pulp gaming table!

1/144 New WWII era fighters and Projects - Kampfflieger

1/144 1/144 New WWII Era fighters and Projects - Kampfflieger
The Kampffliger brand continues to add new aircraft to its range almost daily it seems. Subjects are covering period of both World Wars and the interim period. he we have mix of production items, protoypes and design concepts. While I am clearly focusing on 1/144 those who dabble in other gaming scales may also find some interest in KFs other scale ranges.

http://www.historyofwar.org/articles/weapons_polikarpov_I-152.html
An interesting development of the I-5/I-15, although not seen as particularly successful in soviet eyes there were sold in significant numbers overseas to Chinese Central Government, Spanish Republicans and laterly on the Eastern Front by heavily outmatch VVS forces.

Most have heard of the Bolton Paul Defiant, not many have heard of this unusual Bristol Turret fighter! This is the Bristol companies response to a different Air Ministry specification 11/37 for a Twin-engine two-seat day & night fighter/ground support. It did not enter production.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miles_M.20
The Miles M.20 was a Second World War fighter developed by Miles Aircraft in 1940. Designed as a simple and quick-to-build 'emergency fighter' alternative to the Royal Air Force's Spitfires and Hurricanes should their production get disrupted by bombing. In the event, due to dispersal of manufacturing, the Luftwaffe's bombing of the Spitfire and Hurricane factories did not seriously affect production, and so the M.20 proved unnecessary and was cancelled.

I think that Kampfflieger is going to a dangerous place, he will surely have to produce a version of the iconic and under represented Martin Baker M.B.5 'possibly the greatest piston engined fighter developed during WWII' :-)

* For anyone interested in more details on these and other British project I can highly recommend the following book: British Secret Projects - Fighters and Bombers 1935 - 1950, By Tony Butler.

1/144 Westland Whirlwind & Martin Maryland

1/144 Westland Whirlwind &  Martin Maryland - Kampflieger
While Kampflieger is known for his prodigious range of 1/144 WWI aircraft, and a few Luft 46 aircraft, he has taken to producing a number of more unusual WWII models (They look like scaled up versions of his 1/200 gaming pieces, in which case a rescaled Bristol F.11/37 could be fun!)

Westland Whirlwind ( A wheels down  props version would be nice) an interesting fighter sidelined by its more sucessful singe engined counterparts. (available here )

Martin Maryland (interesting and unique in 1/144), an curious service history designed for the US, sold to the French and used by the British and SAF in North Africa and Middle East.(available here)

I recommend anyone with an interest in new 1/144 items being produced via the Shapeways tool to visit: Sort by New - 1/144 List

1/144 Petroczy-Karman-Zurovec PKZ 2 - Kampfflieger

1/144 Petroczy-Karman-Zurovec PKZ 2 - Kampfflieger

The Petroczy-Karman-Zurovec PKZ 2 helicopter, despite its name, was invented by Wilhelm Zurovec for which he alone received German patent No. 347,578, dated 12 February 1918. The 1400 kg PKZ 2, primarily developed by Ensign Wilhelm Zurovec. The triangular structure used three 100hp Gnome rotary engines powering two counter-rotating propellers. The engines were soon replaced with 120hp Le Rhone engines and flight tests resumed that May. The vehicle was flown over 30 times, eventually with a second observer, and reportedly achieved a tethered height of 50m and an endurance of 30 minutes

A interesting, but short run and short lived aircraft largely seeing service with the RNAS (Royal Naval Air Service) in 1917, approx 147 were built (compated to the 5,400 Sopwith Camels produced), A note of merit would be the Canadian pilot Raymond Collishaw, scoring 34 of his eventual 60 victories in this aircraft, making him the top Triplane ace.

1/144 Junkers D.I - By Kampfflieger

1/144 Junkers D.I WWI fighter - By Kampfflieger

Although some what ungainly and withan all metal full cantilevered wing, it was actually many years ahead of its time from in its aeronautical construction. Destined to become a naval fighter the end of the war cut short its service career. Needless to say this aircraft is the forerunner of so many interwar junkers seaplanes and transport aircraft culminating in the Ju-52/3m
