Neighbor's Barn

6x9 watercolor on 140 lb Grumbacher cold press paper done yesterday from one of my many barn photos; some were taken before the structures were torn down or fell down from age and neglect. Foreground is a mix of weeds with purple flowers with one repeated wet colored wash after the other. COPYRIGHT 2024 Kay Smith

December Deserted Barn

5x7 watercolor using Winsor Newton travel kit on Fabriano 140 lb cold press paper done early this week in our Vegas hotel room. This old barn is not in use and is another in my series of those once necessary farm buildings. A limited palette of burnt sienna, ultramarine blue, raw sienna was used along with a few marks with a Derwent colored pencil for grass details. COPYRIGHT 2022 Kay Smith

Gardener's Bike

9x6.5 watercolor, a daily painting, of an old garden shed and the worker's bike and basket.  Photo ref courtesy WetCanvas/Susan.  I edited lots of the photo out such as foreground, middle ground, items on the bike and clutter around the shed's entrance, and top right I added blue sky.  In the foreground I added multicolored poppies.

Barnwood

9x12 watercolor on Fluid 140 lb cold press paper done over the weekend of an old decaying and dilapidated barn that was once some farm's pride and joy.  Barns as a subject are the icons of farm life and can tell so many stories if only they could talk.

Backcountry Barn

12x9 watercolor on Fluid 140 lb cold press paper sketched this morning then painted this afternoon, an imaginary country scene of a rundown old barn.  The rocky landscape foreground was fun to paint wet in wet in layers as was the middle ground.  The fence is still up so suppose someone is running cattle.  Storm clouds are building up overhead. When dry, splattering was done for texture.

Abandoned Barn

9x12 watercolor on Canson 140 lb cold press paper/Daniel Smith paints done this weekend from one of stack of old barn photos collected over the years.  It was painted while in the New Mexico mountains yesterday.  The day before our skies looked stormy as shown.

Homestead Carriage and Barn

9x4.25 watercolor completed over the weekend for a drawing event on WetCanvas hosted by Kate Scott in Canada.  In this landscape, a carriage sits in mid-foreground on a narrow gravel road while old wooden barn flanks the vehicle.  When dry I splattered various neutral colors for tiny rocks and rusty oranges for leaves.  A challenge was to include both orange and black as it was Halloween weekend.

Spooky Old Barn

10x14 watercolor painted on 140 lb cold press paper of an abandoned barn, falling down bit by bit as the years encroach upon its once proud facade.  This was done around Halloween in 2009 so you can see by pigment choices the time of season; a solitary existence of this old structure setting a somber mood.  Also it was a timed exercise in under 2 hours.

Utah Barn

15x11 watercolor on Canson 140 lb cold press paper drawn and painted yesterday for a weekend drawing event; photo courtesy WetCanvas! host Patrice.  This old useless ramshackle barn is falling down along with the old wooden fences and corrals of bygone ranching days.  I used a b&w print and ignoring local color, made up my own, with foreboding dark skies, distant hills, middle and foreground weeds and foliage.

Barn Cat

6x6 watercolor over ink pen sketch using Pigma Micron 01 by Sakura. This is done from a 1970s photo and was really fun painting all the texture from the barn cat’s soft fur to the roughened and weathered barnwood planks.
