ROCK THE PAINT -- DVD Review by Porfle

Originally posted on 7/2/08

Described as a "racially-charged fish-out-of-water basketball movie", director Phil Bertelsen's ROCK THE PAINT is about a couple of Jewish white boys from rural Indiana who endure the usual culture shock when their widowed father gets a teaching job in Newark, New Jersey. The older teen, Josh (Douglas Smith) wants to play basketball, while his nine-year-old brother Tim (Sam Stone) suffers from the delusion that he's an aspiring rapper. As you might guess, both come into conflict with various urban black teens in their new 'hood, while Dad struggles to convince the black students in his class that he's qualified to teach about the civil rights movement in the 60s.

Less than five minutes into the movie, I was already starting to hate these kids. Josh and Tim steal a tractor from the farmer who allows them to live on his land and destroy much of his cornfield just for laughs. This gets the whole family evicted, yet the rebellious Josh is not only unrepentant, but also indignant that they're moving just so Dad can find gainful employment. When the script calls for it, Douglas Smith starts jerking around wildly and bellowing his head off to express intense emotions, but the rest of the time he's barely there.

As Tim, Sam Stone struts around like a pint-sized gangsta, grabbing his crotch and saying stuff like "F--- off, beeyotch!" in what I assume is intended to be comedy relief. In short, he's one of those obnoxious child actors who, instead of really acting, broadly mimics adult performances he's seen. Meanwhile, Christopher Innvar as Dad is about as charismatic as Stephen Lack in SCANNERS.

The black characters consist of the usual types you'd expect. There's Antwon (Kevin Phillips), who's initially hostile toward Josh but warms up to him when they end up on the same Catholic school basketball team. Jas Anderson plays T-Bone, the vile-o-lent tough guy who hates Josh and resents Antwon for betraying their friendship, eventually switching schools and joining the bad guy basketball team. Antwon's deaf sister Keisha (Joanna Hartshorne) provides a momentary bright spot in the story as she and Josh tentatively begin a romantic relationship, but this doesn't really go anywhere.

Most of the story is visually hustled along using montages full of hyperactive editing, spaz-cam, and a nonstop cacophony of songs to clue us in on how to feel each time the scene changes. We know Dad is falling in love with one of his students, a nice Asian lady named Sunny (Karen Tsen Lee), because every once in a while we're shown a few seconds of them holding hands in a cafe or cuddling next to some Chinese dragons. Abrupt transitions lead to scenes with woozy, streaky camera effects to reflect the characters' innermost feelings when they aren't barking awkward dialogue at each other.

Even the big climactic basketball game, presented as a slapdash music-based montage, is drained of any suspense the moment Josh takes the court and his annoying "go white boy" theme starts to play on an endless loop for the rest of the sequence. As expected, the dejected good guy team goes into the locker room down by a huge margin at the halfway point, only to make a miraculous comeback once Josh shows up. The fact that we never see the players and the cheering onlookers in the same shot gives it all a strangely dislocated feeling.

I have to hand it to writer Dallas Brennan for one thing, though--I certainly didn't expect him to end this sequence, and the movie, the way he did. Something totally out of left field happens, and then a couple of brief wrap-up scenes usher us to an unresolved fadeout before we have time to say "Huh?"

The DVD is 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen with 5.1 Dolby Digital sound. Extras include a behind-the-scenes featurette, deleted scenes, two trailers, and scenes from several festivals, including Tribeca, where the film appears to have been warmly received.

These film festival attendees and various online reviews that I've read express widely-differing reactions to ROCK THE PAINT than mine, so your mileage may vary. For me, though, it was less like rocking the paint and more like watching it dry.

Marc Maron and Jillian Bell in Lynn Shelton's "SWORD OF TRUST" -- Opens July 12th in NY; July 19th in LA

IFC Films Presents
A Film by Lynn Shelton

"SWORD OF TRUST"

Starring Marc Maron, Jillian Bell, Michaela Watkins and Jon Bass

"Lynn Shelton's loose, funny improv-based comedy feature [has an] excellent cast and something to say. One wishes more tightly scripted comedy screenplays had such savory dialogue, or inspired character conceptions . "
- Dennis Harvey, VARIETY

"Fun and funny, and we're never entirely sure where it's going. A sense of generosity and an emotional core in addition to its laughs."
- Kimber Myers, THE PLAYLIST

IFC Films will release SWORD OF TRUST on July 12th in New York (IFC Center and The Landmark at 57 West) and July 19th in Los Angeles (Landmark's Nuart Theatre)

**World Premiere: SXSW 2019**
**Opening Night: 2019 SEATTLE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL**

Synopsis:
This riotously funny, improv-based eighth feature from acclaimed director Lynn Shelton (Outside In, Your Sister's Sister, Humpday) is filled with her trademark insight and humanism while slyly exploring our increasingly divided culture of conspiracy theories and revisionist history.

When Cynthia (Jillian Bell, 22 Jump Street) and Mary (Michaela Watkins, "Casual") show up to collect Cynthia’s inheritance from her deceased grandfather, the only item she’s received is an antique sword that he believed to be proof that the South won the Civil War.

The two attempt to unload the object to a curmudgeonly pawnshop owner Mel (Marc Maron, "GLOW") and his man-child sidekick Nathaniel (Jon Bass, Molly's Game). When Mel and Nathaniel discover there’s a black market for the relic, the two pairs reluctantly join forces to sell this rarefied ‘prover item’ to the highest bidder.

The adventure that ensues takes the four of them on a wild journey into the depths of conspiracy theory and Southern disillusionment. Anchored by a hilarious and emotionally raw performance from Maron (who also wrote and performed the music), Sword of Trust is a sharp, unexpected ensemble comedy with Shelton's authentic take on the complexities of interpersonal relationships on full display.

Exploring the Legacy and Cult of "SHOWGIRLS" -- Tribeca '19: Documentary "YOU DON'T NOMI"

"YOU  DON'T  NOMI"

Directed by  Jeffrey McHale

2019 Tribeca Film Festival

Synopsis: When Showgirls was released in 1995, Paul Verhoeven’s salacious NC-17 look at Vegas dancers was met by critics and audiences with near universal derision. But in the intervening decades, the film has inspired an ever-growing fan community and impassioned debate over its quality, artistic intent and messages about sex and gender.

Guided by a chorus of film critics, scholars, and fervent devotees, Jeffrey McHale's documentary explores the legacy and broader implications of Showgirls, while diving into its cultural inspirations as well as its place in Verhoeven’s filmography.

In tracing Showgirls' journey from notorious flop to cult classic and unlikely artistic resurrection, YOU DON’T NOMI takes a thought-provoking and entertaining look at an unforgettable piece of American popular culture and the surprising ways we connect with film and each other.

"Caesar and Otto" Comedy-Horror Double Feature at the Long Island Film Festival

Summer Camp Massacre will be making its EAST COAST premiere at this year's Long Island Film Festival in Glen Cove, Friday October 9th at 7:15PM.

Directly following "Summer Camp" will be the world premiere of it's 10 minute sequel, "Caesar and Otto in the House of Dracula." The film picks up directly after the cliffhanger ending of "Summer Camp" and stars Ed Dennehy, brother of Brian, as Steve Dracula, Dracula's lesser-known younger brother. Shot entirely against green screen, the short film is a black and white throwback to the Universal horror movies of yesterday.

"Summer Camp" premiered earlier this month at Kentucky's "Fright Night Film Festival", where it received an honorable mention.

Fangoria magazine called John "The Leonard Maltin of Horror." John will not only meet with fans and interview our Guests of Honor on stage, but will bask in the glory of his new book, "I Was a TV Horror Host" -- a historic overview of the Horror Host phenomenon, with his experience on "Creature Features" being the centerpiece.

But that’s not all, there will be a rare midnight screening of “Killer Klowns from Outer Space” (1988), while fans of ‘70s Blaxploitation horror will scream their heads off at the double feature of “Blacula” (1972) and “Sugar Hill” (1974). Also featured this year will be Roman Polanski’s sinister tale of Satanism, “Rosemary’s Baby” (1968). Plus, more films to be announced – twelve terrifying titles in all!

Besides the movies themselves, the upstairs mezzanine of the Castro Theatre will be packed with vendors, eager to sell their horrific wares, goods, t-shirts, memorabilia, posters, DVDs, models, and all things spooky and kooky.

Exhumed Films 24 Hour Horror-thon FAQ

Q: Why are you guys doing this show?
A: For a few reasons:
1. It's our tenth anniversary and we want to do something special
2. Nothing like this has ever been done in the Philadelphia area
3. It's going to be lots of fun.and a test of endurance

Q: Is it really going to go on for 24 hours? Nonstop?
A: Yes. If all goes as planned, it should be nonstop movies, shorts, and
trailers for the full 24 hours.

Q: So how many full length films will you actually be screening?
A: Thirteen, most likely.

Q: Thirteen movies? Isn't that...y'know....kind of insane?
A: Yes. Completely

Q: When is it happening?
A: The show will start on Saturday October 27th at 12 noon. It will end on Sunday October 28th at approximately 12 noon. Tickets will be onsale at 11am on the 27th.

Q: Where is the show taking place?
A: The International House at University of Pennsylvania, 3701 Chestnut
Street, Philadelphia.

Q: How much does it cost to get into this show?
A: Tickets for the marathon are only $20. This is a very expensive program for us to put together, but as a "thank you" to our audience, we're keeping the ticket price as low as possible. That's less than $1 per hour of entertainment!

Q: Can I buy my tickets in advance?
A: As of right now, the only way to guarantee seating is to be at the
I-House when tickets go onsale at 11am on Oct. 27. But that might change; if we do sell advance tickets, we'll post it on the site.

Q: What if I plan to come late or only stay for a few movies-can I get in at a reduced rate?
A: Sorry, but tickets are still $20 whether you plan on staying for the
entire 24 hours or just a few hours.

Q: Can I watch a few films, leave, then come back later?
A: Yes. All audience members will receive a wristband and also a handstamp to verify that you have paid your $20. Just be sure to keep your wristband and your stamp visible so that if you go out for a while and come back later, you'll have proof that you have already paid & will be allowed re-entry to the theater.

Q: What if I wash my hands and accidentally wash off the handstamp?
A: Don't wash the top of your hand.

Q: Okay, here's the big question: what movies are you going to show?
A: It's a secret.

Q: Why aren't you announcing what movies are playing?
A: Again, for a few reasons:
1. It adds an element of surprise
2. It allows us to adjust our playlist of movies if we come across something unique shortly before the show

Q: Well, I'm not paying $20 for any show that doesn't tell me what movies I'll be watching.
A: That's not a question.

Q: Who are you, Alex Trebek? Fine, I'll rephrase it.why should I come to
this show if I don't know what's playing?
A: Because the movies we're showing are all really good. Really. You have to trust us.

Q: Why should I trust you?
A: If you look at the list of movies we've shown over the last ten years,
you'll see we've shown some of the greatest horror films of all time. You
know what we have access to. When we say we're showing really good films, we mean it. This is one of the coolest film combos we've ever done, and a great way to celebrate Halloween weekend. And at only $20, it's a bargain even if you only stay for a few movies!

Q: Can you give us any hints as to what's playing?
A: I can say this: the lineup will be a combination of films we've shown
before and other titles we've never screened. The majority of the titles
could be considered fan favorites, but we have some really exciting rarities
as well. The films are primarily from the 1970s & 1980s. You'll get a
little of everything: zombies, slashers, classic monsters, exploitation,
extreme gore and extreme campiness. Our primary rule in selecting the films for the lineup was that we wanted every single title to be gory or goofy action packed fun, and I think we've succeeded.

Q: Are you selling food at this show?
A: The I-House does not have a concession stand, per se, but there are
vending machines and a small café in the lobby, and there's a Wawa right
down the street. There are also a number of nearby restaurants if you want to sneak out for lunch, dinner, etc. or pick up a pizza to bring back to the show. You are welcome to bring in outside food as long as you do not make a mess and you clean up after yourself.

Q: Will there be other stuff to buy?
A: As always, Diabolik DVD will have a table set up throughout much of the
show. We should also have a new 10th anniversary commemorative t-shirt for sale.

Q: Besides money for tickets and DVDs and t-shirts, what else should I bring to the show?
A: If you're in for the long haul, a pillow and blanket or sleeping bag
might make for a cozier viewing experience at 3am. Also plan on bringing
lots of quarters to fill the parking meter periodically if you drive to the
show. Perhaps some caffeine pills or Red Bull would come in handy. And
Tylenol.

Q: This show sounds like a cool idea. Is there anything I can do to help
with the marathon?
A: Tell your friends. Most of the people who discover Exhumed Films do so
via word of mouth. This is obviously a very expensive undertaking for us,
so the more people who attend, the greater the likelihood of our breaking
even! You might also consider passing out some fliers in your area to help
spread the word.
