Wicked Witch Actress Margaret Hamilton Seriously Burned While Filming "The Wizard Of Oz" (1939) (video)

Margaret Hamilton was memorable as the Wicked Witch of the West.

But the iconic role proved a painful one in this scene.

During her disappearance through a trap door in the floor...

...a burst of flame was ignited too soon.

She received 2nd and 3rd degree burns on her face and hand.

Hamilton returned to work after recuperating for six weeks...

...but staunchly refused to do any more fire-related scenes.

James Bond's "Man With The Golden Gun" Corkscrew Car Jump With NO Slide Whistle! (video)

The Roger Moore "James Bond" era played fast and loose with 007's serious image...

...even during some of its best and most impressive stunts.

A key example is the infamous corkscrew car jump from "The Man With The Golden Gun", which, although thrilling on its own, is ruined by a cartoony slide-whistle sound effect.

But what if, instead of that silly whistle, we got to hear the fabulous James Bond theme in all of its glory?

As we can see and hear in this video, it makes quite a difference.

Painful-Looking Stunt in Vampire Classic "NEAR DARK" (1987) (video)

In Kathryn Bigelow's widely-revered cult classic...

...Caleb (Adrian Pasdar) is a novice vampire still discovering his new abilities.

Such as being able to knock a man across a barroom with one punch.

The stunt man gets yanked backward by a (visible) cable...

...and is supposed to land flat on a pool table.

Instead, his spine sharply strikes the edge of the table.

Which looks much more painful than planned.

Trigger Smashes Outlaw's Skull (GRAPHIC!) in Roy Rogers' "Under California Stars" (1948)(video)

Outlaws kidnap Roy Rogers' prized horse Trigger for ransom.

But Trigger proves to be quite a handful.

Especially for the "dummy" who gets a hoof right through his head!

He may need to lie down for awhile after that.

When she runs into some trouble getting on...

...it's Hoppy (William Boyd) to the rescue.

The result is an amazing and dangerous stunt.

3 Times When John Wayne Did His Own Stunts (Donovan's Reef/ The War Wagon/ Big Jake) (video)

One stunt often attributed to Duke that he DIDN'T do...

...was the four-rail-fence horse jump in TRUE GRIT (1969).

Halfway during the jump the scene cuts away to a stuntman with his face away from the camera.
Rest assured, if Duke had done that jump...we'd have seen his face the whole time.

That's why Quentin Tarantino hired stuntwoman Zoe Bell for DEATH PROOF...
...so that you could see her face during this entire stunt sequence.

But despite his failing health in the early 60s and beyond...
...John Wayne was known to sometimes handle a stunt himself.

1. Donovan's Reef (1963)
2. The War Wagon (1967)
3. Big Jake (1971)

Not bad for a "fat old man" (as he's described in True Grit)...with one lung!

In John Ford's cavalry epic "Fort Apache" (1948)…

...we see a horse roll over a hapless rider.

...and yet another harrowing rollover stunt.

Rogue cop Max (Mel Gibson) is hell-bent on revenge...

...against the cycle psychos who killed his family.

He finally drives their leader into a deadly head-on collision.

But the truck driver didn't want to damage his truck, so...

...a flat sheet of metal was attached to the front...

...with the headlights and grill painted on.

James Bond Car Stunt Blooper: "Diamonds Are Forever" (1971) (video)

Sean Connery's final official Bond film...

...contains a cool car chase in downtown Las Vegas...
...as Bond and Tiffany Case (Jill St. John) elude the local police.

In some shots you can see the crowds gathered on the sidewalks to watch the filming.

The scene's highlight is when Bond navigates a narrow alley on two wheels.
But it contains a blooper.

The stunt begins with Bond's side of the car in the air.
The car seems to level out.
But now, inexplicably, Tiffany's side is in the air.

But it's still a cool stunt...and a fun scene.

Awkward Stunt And Visual Effect In "El Dorado" (John Wayne, 1967) (video)

In the trailer for "El Dorado", we get to watch James Caan as "Mississippi"...

...impetuously hurl himself into the path of some outlaws' horses.

There's an obvious cut between Caan (or stunt man) and dummy.

(One horse even appears to step on him.)

And then...GIANT HORSES!

...which will end with the screen's very first air cannon car rollover.

Most Expensive Silent Film Shot Ever: Train Wreck From "The General" (Buster Keaton, 1926) (video)

Buster Keaton is a Confederate train engineer in this classic Civil War comedy.

Pursued by two Union trains, he crosses a bridge and then sets it on fire.

The Union officer orders his own train to cross anyway.

The result is the costliest, and perhaps most spectacular, shot in all of silent film.

Buster Keaton Breaks His Neck in "Sherlock, Jr." (1924) (video)

"Sherlock, Jr." contains several of Buster Keaton's best stunts.

But out of all the dangerous stunts he performed in his films...
...this one resulted in a broken neck...
...when the force of the water was greater than expected.

Buster simply ignored the pain and kept working until a callus grew over the fracture.

It was discovered by a doctor who X-rayed him over a decade later.
