GENTLEMEN BRONCOS -- DVD Review by Porfle

Originally posted on 3/8/10

I imagine that comedies about total nerds appeal to two seperate groups--the cool people who look down on the characters and laugh derisively at them, and the total nerds who can identify with them. Personally, I've always aspired to be part of a third category--the "cool nerd"--and thus able to enjoy GENTLEMEN BRONCOS (2009) from both perspectives. (Yeah, I know--all nerds think they're cool.) Either way, it's an exceedingly funny and inventive film that anyone can appreciate in one way or another.

Benjamin Purvis (Michael Angarano) is a high school nerd who lives with his widowed mother Judith (Jennifer Coolidge), a really bad clothing designer. Benjamin loves cheesy sci-fi/fantasy novels and has just finished his own epic entitled "Yeast Lords: The Bronco Years." During his stay at a writers' camp known as Cletus Fest, he submits his story in an amateur writers' contest which will be judged by legendary author Dr. Ronald Chevalier (Jemaine Clement) of the famed "Cyborg Harpies" trilogy. The stuffy and conceited Chevalier, who has run out of ideas and is about to get the boot from his publisher, goes ga-ga over Benjamin's manuscript and submits it as his own work, whereupon it becomes a huge bestseller.

Angarano wisely underplays the role of the introspective, world-weary but guardedly optimistic Benjamin, serving as the outwardly calm center for the storm of goofball characters swirling around him. Clement's bad-sci-fi author Ronald Chevalier is the quintessential full-of-himself minor celebrity who is as pretentious and self-important as he is achingly banal. Two fellow nerds whom Benjy meets on the bus to writers' camp are Halley Feiffer as the friendly but manipulative Tabatha and Héctor Jiménez as overtly eccentric amateur filmmaker Lonnie Donaho (Jiménez pulls the most awesomely extreme fish-face in every shot) who end up making a hideously awful videotape version of "Yeast Lords" with Lonnie playing the female lead.

Fans of Sam Rockwell (GALAXY QUEST, THE GREEN MILE) should have a ball watching him play two wildly different characters here: first, he's Benjy's mental image of the "Yeast Lords" hero Bronco, a bearded, long-haired wild man (based on Benjy's late, lamented father whom he barely knew) whose potent gonads are sought after by bad-guy Daysius as cloning stock; and second, as Chevalier's altered version of the character (renamed "Brutus") as a mincing, platinum-blonde transsexual who looks like a cross between Captain Kangaroo and one of the Nelson twins. Scenes from both versions of Benjy's sprawling saga supply some of the most outrageously funny moments in the film.

Best of all is the great Jennifer Coolidge (AMERICAN PIE, BEST IN SHOW) as Benjy's equally nerdy mom, Judith. Her dream is to be a clothing designer specializing in nightgowns--when she proudly displays her sketches, they're deliciously awful. She also makes horrible matching outfits for Benjy and herself, which, to his credit, Benjy wears without protest because his eternally supportive mom is also his best friend. Coolidge plays the role with utter sincerity which makes her that much funnier, and she's a joy to watch. (The outtakes reel features some of her hilarious ad-libs breaking up the cast and crew.)

The blissfully spaced-out Dusty (Mike White), a member of the "Guardian Angel" program at Judith's church whom she has enlisted to be a friend to Benjy, teaches him how to use a homemade blowgun, and when Benjy accidentally fires a dart into Judith's left boob, her screaming reaction is priceless. Later, Judith is molested by a rich buyer who has expressed interest in her designs, and when Benjy leaps to her defense, the guy starts shooting at them from the balcony of his mansion as they cower behind their car.

Another highlight occurs as we see Lonnie's dreadful screen adaptation of "Yeast Lords" get its grand premiere at a local movie theater, with Dusty starring as Bronco. This prompts Chevalier to threaten Lonnie with a lawsuit for plagiarising his new novel (which he stole from Benjy), setting up the final confrontation between Chevalier and an increasingly-indignant Benjy.

Some of the humor in this movie is so painfully deadpan that it almost dares us not to laugh. At other times, the unbridled absurdity abounds in waves of pure delight as we're treated to sights that might make you wonder what filmmakers Jared and Jerusha Hess (of NAPOLEON DYNAMITE and NACHO LIBRE fame) have been smoking. Much of the funny stuff is the kind that can be appreciated in an intellectually-stimulated silence, but now and then there are instances (usually involving Jennifer Coolidge) that provoke the kind of cathartic belly-laughs that make good comedy such a joy to experience.

The DVD from 20-Century Fox is in 1.85:1 widescreen with English Dolby 5.1 and Spanish and French Dolby Surround. Subtitles are in English and Spanish. Extras include outtakes, deleted scenes, a behind-the-scenes featurette, and a fun commentary track with Jared and Jerusha Hess and DP Munn Howell. (The Blu-Ray edition contains additional featurettes not found on the DVD--well, isn't that special?)

The opening titles feature a collection of wonderfully cheesy sci-fi paperback covers, one of which I actually remember seeing on the rack back in the late 60s or early 70s--something called "Gender Genocide", I think. My consumption of such literature at the time was mainly confined to "Star Trek" and the occasional Andre Norton novel, but it's still fun to see all of this old paperback cover art. The accompanying main title song is the soul-deadeningly horrible "In the Year 2525" by Zager and Evans, one of the most horrendously godawful songs ever written and thus exquisitely appropriate in this context.

I had a great time watching GENTLEMEN BRONCOS and, admittedly, identifying with a lot of it. Heck, it's fun to be a nerd sometimes, which Jared and Jerusha Hess seem to know quite well, and when Benjy finally, really smiles for the first time during the triumphant last scene, their obvious love for this oft-maligned class of people is infectious.

ADJUST YOUR TRACKING: THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE VHS COLLECTOR -- DVD Review by Porfle

(Originally posted on 6/27/14)

First of all--just as most pre-recorded VHS tapes begin with an "FBI Warning", I feel as though I should start my review of ADJUST YOUR TRACKING: THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE VHS COLLECTOR (2013) with an "FYI Warning." In short...if you're a "normal" person who doesn't understand the obsessive nature of fandom and/or collecting, chances are this documentary about rabid VHS tape collectors will not only be uninteresting to you, but puzzling and even off-putting as well.

If, however, you share even a fraction of these guys' nostalgia for the glory days of VCRs and video stores, and can empathize with their enthusiasm due to some collecting obsession of your own, then you'll probably find this gushing fanboy love letter to VHS of more than passing interest.

As for me, I bought my first clunky top-loading Magnavox VCR in 1981, as soon as my first real job afforded me the means to do so (about $600), because for me it was the realization of a lifelong dream--the ability to actually record my favorite movies and TV shows, and to put whatever I wanted to on my TV whenever I wanted to watch it.

There were no video stores in town yet, but the appliance store where I bought my VCR had a tiny bookshelf of rental tapes. I got two free ones with my purchase and chose THE GRADUATE and WHERE'S POPPA? After setting up my new VCR at home, my excitement over pushing that big "play" button and seeing the "Magnetic Video" logo pop onto my TV screen at my own bidding was something I'll never forget. That night, I used one of my two free RCA blank tapes to record ALIEN from HBO, marveling at the fact that I could then rewind the tape and watch it again and again.

My tape collection grew quicky as those $25 RCA blank tapes (which were so solidly made that they still play well to this day) gave way to ten-dollar bundles of cheap blank tapes from Wal-Mart, and pre-recorded movies came down in price from $70-100 apiece (priced to sell mostly to video rental stores) to around $20 when a mass market for them was discovered. And the spread of the mom 'n' pop "hole in the wall" video store gave me plenty of tapes to make copies of as soon as I was able to buy a second VCR in '84.

As Troma's Lloyd Kaufman states (other commentators include Fangoria's Tony Timpone, Keith "The Bloody Ape" Crocker, Wild Eye's Rob Hauschild, and our own 42nd St. Pete, along with various authors and video store owners), video stores in those days were "like bookstores." Each one had its own individual ambience and unique selection of movies. But when big, impersonal Blockbuster came along and started driving the little guys out of business, they started selling off their stock at reduced prices. Like many others, I began buying up a lot of these tapes while they lasted.

Because of all this, I can relate to the stories told by the tape collectors in ADJUST YOUR TRACKING and easily share in their nostalgia for the medium of VHS. These guys, however, take it to a whole different, overtly obsessive level that will amuse and amaze.

Many of them, in fact, have recreated the video store experience in their own homes with massive collections displayed on shelves that take up several rooms. One guy has even created his own video store dubbed "Bradco Video" in his basement, including actual store shelves and a checkout counter. Others chatter at length about their methods of categorizing, alphabetizing, and obtaining rare titles, sometimes for hundreds of dollars (a rare piece-of-crap horror flick called TALES FROM THE QUADEAD ZONE went for almost $700 on eBay).

The collectors bask in the physical attributes of VHS, especially the mostly cheapo-looking covers which they often value more than their contents. They talk excitedly about the different distribution companies such as Vestron, Magnetic, and the popular favorite, Wizard (I still have a few of those myself). They trade stories about rare finds at flea markets, conventions, and going-out-of-business sales, and the physical sensation derived from such "lowbrow archeology" ("It feels like getting your first boner").

While the drive to collect and preserve the medium of VHS may seem merely obsessive to many, the fact remains that many films are still available solely on tape and not on DVD and are in danger of becoming lost.

Only time will tell if these torch-carriers' efforts are in vain, or if VHS will resume its place in pop culture the way the vinyl record album has (but in which the 8-track tape has not).

As for me, I resisted the encroachment of the DVD in the late 90s until I was finally won over by the medium and allowed my once-avid interest in videotape to wane. But for the hardcore enthusiasts of ADJUST YOUR TRACKING: THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE VHS COLLECTOR, there is only the delirious pleasure of taking a slab of plastic out of a crudely-decorated box and inserting it into a clunky machine, and watching something which, like life itself, is full of crackles, drop-outs, and other imperfections, and for which adjusting the tracking periodically is simply part of the fun.

(NOTE: I reviewed a screener without the extras. The 2-disc set should include a co-directors' commentary, a producers' commentary, extended interviews, a behind-the-scenes documentary, three short films by the directors, deleted scenes, festival Q & A footage, trailers, and Easter eggs. )

DeskPop Entertainment Label Launches with First Film "13 FANBOY"

DeskPop Entertainment Label Launches with First Film

"13 FANBOY"

Featuring Legendary Scream Queens & Horror Icons from Friday the 13th Films and Other Classics

DeskPop Entertainment has launched as a new independent film distribution label, and kicks off its debut with the October 22 release of the horror-thriller, 13 Fanboy.  The film will have a day and date release in theaters, as well as premium video on demand.

13 Fanboy is about an obsessed fan, unable to distinguish fiction from reality, who stalks his favorite actors from the Friday the 13th films and beyond, terrorizing and killing them one by one like his idol, Jason Voorhees.  The story follows Kelsie Voorhees, who as a child witnesses the murder of her grandmother, Friday the 13th actress Deborah Voorhees, at the hands of this crazed fanboy. As an adult, Kelsie discovers her grandmother isn’t the only victim, and the killer is still hunting his favorite cast members, as he can’t seem to separate the characters in the movies from their real-life personas.

“Horror fans are the best,” says director Deborah Voorhees, star of Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning, who also stars in the film as herself,  “but every once in a while you get someone who feels scary.”  When Voorhees met with veteran producer Joel Paul Reisig, the idea of a fan turning into a stalker frightened her. “There is that tiny unspoken fear inside that something like this could actually happen,” she says.  “After several sleepless nights I realized that if it scared me this much, it would scare others too.”

Together Voorhees and Reisig wrote the script, then gathered up some of the most popular actors from the original Friday the 13th movies and other horror greats. The cast features actors and actresses from the Friday the 13th films, along with iconic scream queens playing fictionalized versions of themselves. The star lineup features Dee Wallace (E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Cujo), Cory Feldman (Lost Boys, Goonies, Stand by Me), Kane Hodder & C.J. Graham (Friday the 13th Series), and Judi Aronson (Weird Science, Friday the 13th).

DeskPop Entertainment was created to offer a dynamic scope of original content ranging from light-hearted genre entertainment to thought provoking, mission-driven cinema designed to stir up engaging conversation. Content will be offered worldwide.

“We are beyond thrilled to formally launch DeskPop Entertainment by providing unique and entertaining content that caters to movie fans of all generations. Personalizing the films that our audience demands is our top priority, and we look forward to showcasing our vigorous slate of new releases later this year,” said Mat Levy, Vice President.

DeskPop Entertainment corporate offices are currently located near Phoenix, AZ with additional offices in New York City.

Collection Complete Offers A Fascinating Look At the Incredible Art of Sculpting 1:6 Figures

Gemr, the leading app for fans to discover, discuss and display, takes us on another fascinating journey with its docu-series Collection Complete with One Customs Figures founder Montwain Gonzales.  Driven by his love for the horror genre and inspired by Rick Baker's work in John Landis' groundbreaking 1982 video "Thriller", Montwain shares his artistic journey into sculpting 1:6 scale figures.

Early on, he used any materials he could land -- silly putty, glue, clay, wax and even toilet paper -- to make his screen heros come to life.  Today, he is living his passion spending hours and even days, creating the perfect scale figure of Jason or Freddy.  And although he has ventured into the world of Sci-Fi and comics as well, horror remains his favorite.

A talented artist with his work highly sought after, Montwain remains humble about the power of art and what it does for him. He launched his own boutique company Ones Customs Figures which creates one-of-a-kind, 1:6 scale, high-end reinterpretations of some of the genre's most beloved icons.  "You could take my hands and I'd learn how to sculpt with my feet," said Montwain.

The series’ fifteenth episode offers fans a different perspective of the world of collecting and is destined to appeal to anyone fascinated by art.  Past episodes of Collection Complete have covered the personal collections of filmmakers Mike Mendez of Tales of Halloween fame and The Hills Run Red producer Robert Meyer Burnett.  Upcoming episodes include collections of designer, artist and model Micheline Pitt and Horror's Hallowed Grounds' Sean Clark among others.

Over the next four weeks, those who create a free account at Gemr's horror club will have a chance to win a one-of-a-kind Ones Customs Figures reimagined interpretation of Jason Voorhees from 1988's Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, valued at $1,000.

Official Trailer for BEHIND THE MASK

PROGRAM SYNOPSIS
Director and writer Eric Dow (Honor in the Valley of Tears) goes behind the scenes of the most notorious fan-fiction short film of all time with BEHIND THE MASK: THE BATMAN: DEAD END STORY.

In the winter of 2003, commercial director Sandy Collora and some of his friends set out to make a low-budget short film for his demo reel.  What they wound up doing, however, was making one of the most elaborate, most watched, most talked about and most controversial short fan-directed films ever made: "Batman: Dead End."

The film launched a nationwide craze when all eight minutes were unveiled at Comic Con in 2003.  Director Kevin Smith called it "an amazing piece of work.  Possibly the truest, best Batman ever made".  In a Hollywood system where Batman movies are huge-budget, mega-merchandised projects, this low-budget short shattered all expectations, garnering an incredible amount of buzz outside of the Hollywood system. With appearances from The Joker, Alien, and Predator, the film was a hit with die-hard comic fans and modern action film lovers alike.

Considering the amount of buzz surrounding the film, Collora was expected to be propelled into the Hollywood stratosphere.  Instead, his career sputtered.  Now, BEHIND THE MASK gives audiences an insider's behind-the-scenes look at the buzz-worthy short and the people who help create it including Collora, comic book legend Neal Adams, and convention all-stars Sean Clark, Shawn Reeves and Jordu Schell.

An incisive look at the making of the short film, BEHIND THE MASK, called "a fascinating look at an eccentric man who was geekdom's king for a day (Chud.com)"  truly uncovers what it takes to make it as a Hollywood A-lister.
