January Is The Door To The Year

I am not a big fan of this month, not normally, but it has been spectacular so far! Sun almost every day, temperatures in the 40s, and there is so much to do that I haven't even had that warm weather withdrawal that I normally get at this time of year. Hmm, weird. I hope I didn't just jinx myself since I usually get so sun deprived that I just want to crawl up inside a Tool video and die. Not this year, oh no!

So, we went out and about yesterday, first to a brunch of Dim Sum (not a huge fan, everything was too doughy) and then a trip to the Asian market. I cannot recommend these places enough. Their produce is dirt cheap, as is their tea. You can walk out with two heavy grocery bags for under $30, so needless to say, I'm a big fan. I am also a big fan of this beauty which is the first thing you see when you walk into the store-

Samarai is almost as big as his horse, yikes! Oh, well. When he breaks the back of his steed, he can always fly off on those wings of his. (??????) I know. I just ignore the silliness and concentrate on the fact that their cilantro is 50 freaking cents. Oh, and if you don't have a strong stomach, stay away from the fresh fish area. A tank full of angry looking frogs is not the nicest thing to start your day looking at. It made me keep imagining this:

From there, it was off to the Botanical Garden, which is a wonderful oasis of warmth and beauty in this grey, though sunny landscape.

Each To His Own Inspiration

If you are like most people with a garden, you started in March and continue to plant, weed, prune, hack and tweak well into Fall. I'm in the 'hurry up and grow' phase of arranging planters in addition to looking for inspiration for the fringe areas of the yard. Then, I remembered: I took a ton of pictures at the Home & Garden Show last February! Inspiration reinstated!

The picture above is from the Holden Arboretum 'Alice In Wonderland' display that took 1st Prize. More after the jump.

Shaggy Androgyny

This is Freja Beha Erichson, Danish model on the cusp of super. I found her over at Jezebel and my first response was, "Oh, they're putting pretty boys on the cover of fashion magazines, yay!" You can never have too many pretty boys around. Then, I took another look and realized it was a 'she.' A she that looks like a gorgeous version of Robert Mapplethorpe's muse, Patti Smith. Do you love the hairstyle? It's straight out of Dazed and Confused, which is fine with me. I am loving the 90s revival this year, even if part of it involves a proxy 70s revivel. Everything old is new again, and I'm totally rocking tights and pleated skirts this Fall. I don't care what anyone says.

The Mirror

Wow. This past week has had some depressing moments. At least I don't live in a town like one depicted below. At least I don't live where the sun doesn't shine for three months of the year. Oh wait, I do! Yay Rust Belt!

Katie Is A Better Woman Than Me

She dated an asshole who sexually assaulted her and when she broke it off (he was lucky she didn't call the police!), he sent one of his friends to throw sulfuric acid in her face. Nice. I don't think that I could sit where she is, with an acid scarred face, and not want to kill my attacker. Things like this make me so mad I could spit bullets.

Oh Shit, I Didn't Know The Kid In Front Of Me Had A Camera!

Fuck!
In my own defense, I'm in an interpretive dance group and I was practising my moves. Don't judge! It's for the big holiday extravaganza!

Caaraaazzyyyyyy!!
Courtney Love's got competition.

Watch the Milky Way Go By

Oops. I meant to post this over a week ago when my baby sent it to me and I forgot. It's gorgeous and it almost makes me wish that I didn't live in a big city where it's impossible to see more than a few dozen stars at any given time. I guess that's the trade off for living in Nowheresville, Texas where this was filmed.

Scent Opera

Thierry Mugler is combining 23 scents with 6 second musical accompaniments at the Peter B. Lewis Theater at the Guggenheim starting May 31st. A scent organ designed by Flakt Woods will release dry perfume through little microphones that are attatched to each chair. I think that it's freaking sold out but if any of you get a chance to go, please email me.

I Wish You Could Buy Italian Vogue Here

But I'm not sure where I'd have to go to find it. Plus, it costs like a hundred bucks and I simply cannot justify spending that amount of money on paper. There are some gorgeous pictures of this Finnish model, Suvi in the latest issue. That's her, above. Fabulous.

This Week's Drag Race

It was an emotional one for me and most viewers as well. The big challenge was for MAC cosmetics' Viva Glam campaign and the winner had a big surprise for everybody. We have all had friends affected by HIV, watched people die and felt powerless to help. I cried but I'm going to buy a tube of that lipstick. It's the least I can do. Here is the link to my latest recap.

Tobie Giddio Interview

Tobie is an amazing artist that has been a close friend of mine since I first met her in NYC in the 80s. She has evolved from doing those iconic Bergdorf ads to a gorgeous and totally original abstract sensibility in her fashion illustration today. Diane Pernet has posted her interview with Walter Cessna and here's the link: http://dianepernet.typepad.com/diane/2009/02/tobie-giddio-interview.html

There are a lot more illustrations there for you to check out and drool over. I need to get mine framed. Love you, Tobie!
