Neca Ultimates - ELVIRA!

NECA Ultimates - Elvira Mistress of the Dark 40th Ann - NECA Toys 2022

I need a neverending supply of Elvira merchandise in my life. I grew up after the time of Vampira, the Munsters, and even the Addams Family (before they all came back in my teens) so my first exposure to a vampy female character was the Mistress of the Dark herself, Elvira. The interesting thing is, I can't even remember how I first saw her. I grew up with four staticky television channels, and I can't imagine any of them playing horror shows or her movie. Yet somehow I was very aware of her. I credit her with getting me over my squeamishness of all this dark and creepy. She was bubbly, and funny, and was a great gateway into a genre that I likely would have avoided otherwise. Until a few years ago, I only had a single Elvira figure in my collection, but Funko and NECA have really stepped up and suddenly I have seven. Now she has proper representation in my collection alongside Bride of Frankenstein and Lily Munster. This Ultimates Elvira is pretty great, but I still want more. (I looking at you, Super7).

Toony Terrors - ELVIRA!

Toony Terrors Series 6 - Elvira: Mistress of the Dark - Neca Toys 2021

I made a disturbing discovery lately. None of the younger generation of my family know who Elvira is. Nine Nieces and Nephews ranging from 5 to 19 have had no exposure. After appropriately shaming my siblings for this educational neglect, I immediately set to correcting the problem. And I think I successfully created a small legion of fans. Elvira was an absolute staple of my childhood. She made me realize the campy nature of spooky movies at an age when I would have run away in fear. As I became an adult toy collector, I have always had a portion of my collection dedicated to vampy women. This can span from Disney witches to Vampirella and everyone in-between. Needless to say, Elvira has always has a place of prominence among the group, and I'm always super excited to add a new representation of her. This Toony Terrors figure is amazing. I think she will quickly be overshadowed by the upcoming Neca figure, but she really looks great and deserves a purchase. Let's check out Elvira below!

Funko Rock Candy - ELVIRA!

Rock Candy Vinyl Collectible - Elvira Mistress of the Dark - Funko 2017

Happy Halloween everyone! I love this holiday so much but the past couple years I've been too swamped to really celebrate. Or maybe I'm just maturing out of it, who knows. But regardless of my costume status, every year I still get very much in the Halloween mood. I get obsessed with vampy toys, I re-read my favorite creepy comics (like Courtney Crumrin and newcomer Girl from the Other Side), and I watch my classic favorites like Creature from the Black Lagoon or Nightmare Before Christmas. A few years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Elvira at a big Halloween Ball she was hosting in my city. I rarely talk to celebrities because I'm no good at gushing platitudes and prefer to just observe. So yeah, I was the creepy Dracula lurking nearby as she greeted fans and solidified my notions of her being a badass super-talented rockstar. She's just so cool. I'm so happy Funko has jumped on board and produced so many Elvira items recently. Now we just need a Dorbz! Let's check out her Rock Candy below!

Funko POP and Mystery Mini - ELVIRA!

Funko POP! Televison #375 & Sci-Fi Mystery Minis Series 3 - Elvira - Funko 2016

Of all the traits I admire in people, talent and creativity really take the top spots. That's why when it comes to actors and comedians, I find myself most drawn to those who can create and embody a character persona that takes on a life of its own. It doesn't happen that often. In the US, I can only really think of a handful; Pee-Wee Herman, RuPaul, and Elvira. (Plus Mr. Bean in the UK and Dame Edna in Australia). Fun fact: I was listening to a podcast a few weeks ago where RuPaul was interviewing Cassandra Peterson (Elvira) and they were talking about Pee-Wee and how Paul Reubens and Cassandra were in the Groundlings together in the late 70s when they developed their characters. I love when I realize things I adore are connected. There hasn't been a huge amount of Elvira merchandise in the past, but recently Funko got into the game with a Pop and a Mystery Mini - hopefully to be followed by many other products (Rock Candy! Dorbz!). Let's check out the first Funko Elviras below!

Women of Halloween Part 1 - ELVIRA!

The Mistress of the Dark Exclusive from Amok Time

I love Halloween, I love action figures, and I love vampy women.  This month, in honor of all three, I will attempt to review a fantastic wicked lady every day.   The first figure for the month is the Amok Time Exclusive Monstars Elvira figure.  She came in two variations; Plain-face and Winking-face.  In my opinion, the plain face is the superior version.  The wink version is an admirable attempt to capture the mischievous flirt that is Elvira, but it is nearly impossible to capture a quirky expression in plastic and have it look right.  There are a lot of different Elvira figures out there; mostly statues, garage kits, and a few action figures, but I personally find this version of the Amok Time figure to be the best.
