Kitty Pryde seems to be a character that is continually reimagined and designed in the comics. My first exposure to her was in her Sprite and Ariel phases in the Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends show. She was a regular feature in my older brother's Classic X-Men issues. And then she was the focal character of the Pryde of the X-Men animated pilot (which seemed to always be on TV). But I think her most prominent and iconic phase was her Excalibur years as Shadowcat. She presented as noticeably older in this era with a two-tone blue outfit, big hair, and even bigger sleeves. It wasn't my favorite look at the time, but it has stood the test of time moreso than any of her other looks. (Writing this is reminding me to catch up on my Marauders reading - where she is a central character and seemingly being reimagined all over again). I've been hearing requests for this Excalibur iteration in Legends form for years. I like the final result, but I realize her hair and sleeves fall short of (80's) expectations.

Age of Apocalypse - SHADOWCAT!
Kitty Pryde is one of those characters who has had a million different looks over the years. She is also one of those characters who plays crucial roles in many of the most iconic X-Men storylines. That means there a ton of different versions of Kitty and not one single iconic look to expect in toy form. I think the most iconic would probably be her Excalibur look (which we should all have in Legends form soon!), but for the most part, every Kitty figure we get will probably just be representing one of her many flash-in-the-pan iterations. I had never seen this Age of Apocalypse Shadowcat design before this figure. I was on an extended hiatus from superhero comics during most of the 90's and never backtracked. This version is very different from other versions we've seen. She appears significantly older, has short light-colored hair, and she has a ferocity that is a stark contrast from her typically gentle nature. Her claws and gritted teeth only add to the distinction and I think she looks great. Let's her out below!

Toy Biz - SHADOWCAT!
With the exciting rumors of a possible Excalibur Marvel Legends box set coming this year from Amazon, I thought I would revisit the only real action figure of an Excalibur character that I own. In the late 90's, exclusive mail-away action figures were a real thing. It sounds like a bizarre concept now, but between Wizard and ToyFare magazines and various comic and videogame offerings, there were always exciting little exclusives to be had. These were mostly simple repaints, but were often surprisingly significant characters - like Feral, Firestar, and of course Shadowcat. Kitty Pryde has always suffered a bit of an identity crisis in the costume department, but I think her blue, puffy-sleeved look is the most iconic. And ironically it's the costume where she looks most like a mature adult woman, rather than the youthful energetic X-Man she is typically portrayed as. But still it's my favorite and I really can't wait to get her in legends form (along with Meggan and Rachel of course!). Let's check out Kitty below!

X-Men Legends - KITTY PRYDE!
Kitty Pryde really created a niche role in the X-Men. When she first appeared in 1980, there had never been a young female character in the roster. It seems like a natural balance to all the grim and often violent male characters now, but before her introduction there really wasn't a youthful voice on the team. Since then, there seems to be a "little sister" character more often than not. Kitty, Boom Boom, Jubilee, Pixie, etc have all filled the same role of innocent novice with a wild side. I also find Kitty interesting because she's never had a codename that stuck (mostly because her real name is better). Ariel, Sprite, Shadowcat, and even Starlord - none of them have the same pizzazz as "Kitty Pryde." Her pet dragon Lockheed makes her pretty unique as well. Lockheed is actually an intelligent dragon-like alien that Kitty met on a Brood-infested world during the Brood Saga storyline. They formed a psychic bond and have been practically inseparable ever since. Let's check out her action figure in detail below!
