From 1999-2001, Fox Kids Network and Saban Entertainment cashed in on the exploding popularity of NASCAR and created the animated series NASCAR Racers featuring two rival racing teams in a futuristic setting. The show was popular and lasted two seasons but fell victim to the sale of Saban to Disney before season 3 went into production. But before that cancellation, the show spawned books, a video game, and of course toys. Most of the toys are simple cars in various scales. And eBay is inundated with Kellogg's promotional toys and Wendy's Kids Meal cars. But hidden in the mix is this great line of "Figure & Rescue Racer" toys featuring nine of the most popular characters in action figure form along with their signature vehicles. Megan Fassler is the token female from Team Fastex (who later assembled a separate team of female drivers). She is the only female who got an action figure. Which is sad, but also a blessing because these are super hard to track down. Let's check out Megan below!

Marvel Legends - BLACK WIDOW & MOTORCYCLE!
I have a preference for my comic characters to have bright costumes and super powers. But despite this it's kind of hard to ignore Black Widow when in a few short years she has become the most merchandised Marvel lady out there. Her constant exposure has made me want a really good comic-style figure of Natasha in Legends scale. This deluxe motorcycle set is probably the best we've seen so far, but I must admit I am not thrilled with the production quality of this figure. Considering that all the Marvel Legends females released in the past few years have been pretty much perfect, it's a surprise that this one somehow has completely dull facial expression(s) and hair that seems well sculpted, but poorly manufactured. The funny thing it that the solicits for this figure looked great, but in person she looks like a rush job. Granted, if this exact figure came out 5 years ago I would be over the moon, but Hasbro has raised their own bar pretty high, and this one unfortunately falls short. Let's check her out below!

Speed Racer the Movie - TRIXIE!
I actually enjoyed the live action 2008 Speed Racer movie. It generally got bad reviews and didn't make a lot of money at the box office, but I thought it was a fun trippy nostalgic spectacle. The cast was full of my favorites too. I always love Emile Hirsch. Matthew Fox was in the middle of his Lost fame (I was so addicted to that show). And John Goodman, Susan Sarandon, and Christina Ricci are always good for a supporting role (plus it was directed by the fan-favorite Wachowskis). Ricci played Speed's eye-in-the-sky girlfriend, Trixie. (Fun fact, a young Ariel Winter played Trixie in the flashback scenes). I discovered this toy line relatively recently - years after they disappeared from clearance bins - and it took forever to hunt her down at a decent price. I thought she would be a 2.5" figure, but in reality she is a pretty unique scale of 3" high. While not a terrific movie line by any means, these toys seem like a throwback to the kind of movie product on the toy shelves in the early 90s. I like it. Let's check her out below!

DC Collectibles Icons - BATGIRL OF BURNSIDE!
I wasn't sure if I would like the DC Collectibles Icons series when they were first announced back in 2015. I was very worn out on the DC Universe Classics style from Mattel and this new line was touted as a continuation of that scale. It didn't help that the first two female offerings were only so-so. The Harley Quinn is a very nice figure, but the face is more sinister than I like for my Harleys and the Atomica figure was gorgeous, but not a character I obsess over. This Batgirl is the first time I'm realizing the potential of this series. The Burnside Batgirl redesign is right up there with Spider-Gwen as one of the coolest superhero costumes of the past few years. It embodies all of the classic elements that you expect, but makes it very functional and utilitarian (like the Darwyn Cooke Catwoman design). I know there is an upcoming Mattel version of this same figure which will offer some competition, but for the next few months at least, this Icons Batgirl is the ultimate Babs action figure. DC SuperHero Girls - WONDER WOMAN & CYCLE!
Finally here is the last of the recent DC Super Hero Girls releases, Wonder Woman with her Motorcycle. I have a feeling this line will be full of re-releases with subtle variants (we've seen several already), but this Wonder Woman really intrigued me. There is an interesting precedent for Diana wearing a motorcycle helmet. There were several outfits worn by Lynda Carter in the 1977 Wonder Woman series that utilized helmets. And the overall outfit reminds me of the Cathy Lee Crosby Wonder Woman from 1974. I doubt any of these considerations were planned, but I will gladly pretend they were intentional homages. Once they release a Catwoman I guess we'll see if they dip into her plethora of historical costume designs for inspiration. I have high hopes for this line and I'm especially excited now that we've seen some well-designed variants. I can't wait to see what the future holds. I'll be keeping my eyes peeled. Imaginext - Streets of Gotham CATWOMAN!
Fisher-Price pulled one of their classic moves and released a series of DC Super Friends Imaginext redecos with no preamble whatsoever. I personally love this. Knowing about upcoming action figures a year in advance is nice. It lets you budget your purchases, it lets the anticipation and excitement build before the release date, and it lets you know that the toy companies are hearing your suggestions. I prefer this route for the majority of my collecting interests. But the fact that you usually don't hear about new Imaginext until they are on the shelves is thrilling in its own way. I can't tell you how many times I ran off in a spur-of-the-moment hunting tizzy because some random new figure showed up on eBay in Iowa or something. Before all the internet toy news sites really got into the groove, these hunting blitzes were a regular occurrence for me. So essentially Imaginext hits me on two nostalgic notes, toys of my youth and toy hunting in the nineties. I love these guys. Let's check out Catwoman below!

DC Super Friends Imaginext BATGIRL!
Since the DC Super Friends Imaginext figures started coming out (back in 2012?), I think that Batgirl has been one of the most requested characters, She seemed like a given considering the demand for female characters and the clear Batman-family branding. But year after year she was missing from the lineup. Then right before Toy Fair this year, pictures of this figure showed up on Kmart.com and sent all Imaginext collectors into a tizzy. The hunt was on. In my area, the department store Kohls has been the first to start carrying her, but I'm sure she'll show up everywhere eventually. This Batgirl is featured in her most current "Batgirl of Burnside" costume with an awesome Batcycle accessory. Although I love this figure, I'm a little surprised they didn't go with a classic costume like the previous DC ladies have. I'm sure we'll see some reapints eventually (especially considering the new DC Super Friends blind bag series), but for now, let's check out Batgirl and her Cycle below!

Batman & Robin - ICESTRIKE CYCLE BATGIRL!
Normally the 1990's trend of creating completely random variants of staple characters annoys the crap out of me. I've seen enough neon camouflage Batmen to last a lifetime (not to mention the current Iron Man and Spider-Man lines keeping up the tradition). But every once in a while a variant comes out of left field and actually looks cool (I'm thinking of Ice Armor He-Man and Mandarin Spawn in particular). While this IceStrike Cycle Batgirl isn't as grand as those two, it certainly is a pretty great variant. The color palette is muted and the armor seems like something that could have appeared in the film. Plus the entire figure has been redecoed with great little sculptural details. All in all she's a fantastic alternate to the original figure. It would not have been unheard of for Kenner to simply repackage the first figure with her motorcycle and call it a day, but luckily we got this really fun figure out of the deal. I unfortunately don't have the IceStrike Cycle itself, but the figure is more than enough to keep me happy.
