I love Stephen King. I've read over 60 of his books and there has only been a couple I didn't like. The Shining is a classic. The funny thing is that I didn't read the book for a long time because I wasn't a fan of the 1980 Kubrick movie. His writing has a sort of creepy nuance that I didn't get from the movie at all. It seemed like a series punctuated shock scenes connected by the barest thread of a story. When I eventually read the book I was amazed at how good the movie could have been with minimal changes. Even still, I watch the movie every few years since I get more open-minded as I get older. It's still a pale comparison to the book, but I can say that about most adaptations. In the book, the Grady girls (not twins) are only briefly mentioned as victims of their father's murderous rage (a previous caretaker of the Overlook Hotel ten years prior). But in the movie, they have an iconic presence that still resonates today. They are by far my favorite part of the film. Let's check out the Grady twins below!

Funko Bat-Family DC BOMBSHELLS!
The amount of DC Bombshells merchandise that has come out over the past year has been a little overwhelming. The majority of these products have been from Funko. They have released tons of products from their Pop, Dorbz, and Rock Candy lines (Plus the first Vynl figures have been solicited and I'm sure Mystery Minis and Pint Size Heroes will come eventually). With all that glorious product hitting the shelves, I defaulted to my standard cost-saving methods and limited myself to only Bat-Family characters. But as you'll see in this post, that still left me with a ton of characters to collect. When the Bombshells designs first appeared five years ago I wasn't instantly sold (I have hangups over the historical objectification of pinup girls vs their cool modern reinvention). But after about three years I caved and bought my first DC Bombshells item (a Harley keychain from Elephant Gun). Well then the dam broke and I have almost 30 pieces (with more on the way). Funko Rock Candy - EVIL-LYN!
I never would have predicted that in 2018 we would be getting a deluge of Evil-Lyn product. As one of the most iconic bad girls of the 80s, we know she will always be around in one form or another. But I am still surprised that in the past eight months my Evil-Lyn collection has doubled. Funko gave us three pretty awesome figures since December and I picked up the Super7 ReAction figure at FYE just yesterday. Something I'm really impressed by is how amazing the Funko Pop and Rock Candy look. The Rock Candy is easily the best looking sculpt in the line. And I'm 90% confident that the Pop is one of the best as well... and that's saying a lot. The Funko Specialty Series is only available to small retailers. I see them at comic shops and mom & pop toy stores. This Evil-Lyn is the first Rock Candy included in the Specialty Series, but I hope she's not the last. My life will be incomplete until I get a Jem and Cheetara (Not to mention Teela and Sorceress which you know are coming).. Let's check out Evil-Lyn below!

Suicide Squad Rock Candy - HARLEY QUINN!
One thing I've always said about Funko is that they consistently deliver. It may take several years, but the product you wish for almost always gets released eventually. (My favorite example is the Yvonne Craig Batgirl which came out four years after the first Batman '66 Pop wave). When the Rock Candy line launched two years ago and we got two Harleys almost immediately, I just assumed we would get a Suicide Squad version before Christmas. Then my assumptions were further bolstered when the GameStop Exclusive Enchantress Rock Candy dropped on Black Friday. I was literally saving space for the new Harley that was certainly coming. And she did come of course, but two long years later. But I wasn't upset because I never doubted that she was coming. And honestly she looks perfect so she was well worth the wait. It makes me excited for all the other fun Rock Candies coming out this Summer. Let's check out the long-overdue Suicide Squad Harley Quinn below!

Rock Candy - JESSICA RABBIT!
Jessica Rabbit is one of the most iconic women from 1980's pop culture. When she first stepped on screen in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? I think the whole world took notice. Her look was created to epitomize the ultimate screen siren: Veronica Lake's hair, Lauren Bacall's gaze, Rita Hayworth's face, and Red Hot Riding Hood's general presence. Despite this calculated formula, she's had very little merchandise produced in the 30 years since her introduction. This is kind of understandable since her animated body is so exaggerated and seems to morph with every step, so pinning down a single iconic look for representation in 3-D would be a difficult task. I've only seen two really well-done sculpts: one is an expensive PVC statue from Medicom, and the other is a simple Hallmark ornament from a few year ago. This Rock Candy is the only Jessica Rabbit figure I own but I'm very pleased with it. They really captured her essence while staying within the Rock Candy style. Let's check her out below!

Funko Rock Candy - ELVIRA!
Happy Halloween everyone! I love this holiday so much but the past couple years I've been too swamped to really celebrate. Or maybe I'm just maturing out of it, who knows. But regardless of my costume status, every year I still get very much in the Halloween mood. I get obsessed with vampy toys, I re-read my favorite creepy comics (like Courtney Crumrin and newcomer Girl from the Other Side), and I watch my classic favorites like Creature from the Black Lagoon or Nightmare Before Christmas. A few years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Elvira at a big Halloween Ball she was hosting in my city. I rarely talk to celebrities because I'm no good at gushing platitudes and prefer to just observe. So yeah, I was the creepy Dracula lurking nearby as she greeted fans and solidified my notions of her being a badass super-talented rockstar. She's just so cool. I'm so happy Funko has jumped on board and produced so many Elvira items recently. Now we just need a Dorbz! Let's check out her Rock Candy below!

Funko Rock Candy - SHE-RA!
Every convention lately seems to have one exclusive item that I can't live without. Last year I went crazy over the NYCC Dark Crystal Kira and Garthim box set. It was limited to 500 and seemed impossible to get. But I somehow lucked out and snagged a set at the show. This years must-have item for me was the She-Ra Rock Candy vinyl figure from Funko. She was frustratingly limited to 1250 pieces and wasn't offered as a shared exclusive anywhere. I ended up paying a pretty penny for her, but I don't regret it for a second. When the Rock Candy line first started coming out, I had a vision that they would release a She-Ra, Cheetara, and Jem. I would love that lineup and we're already a third of the way there! Of course I wouldn't complain about some more She-Ra characters either. Glimmer and Frosta would be awesome. Plus I realized when taking photos of all my Funko She-Ra product that a MOTU Mystery Mini set seems like a given (if the Loyal Subjects license isn't prohibiting that). But I have hopes!

Rock Candy - WONDER WOMAN & DIANA!
I tried to go back to the movies to see Wonder Woman for a second time this past weekend but the showtimes just didn't work out for my schedule. I'm still reeling over the fact that there was a really great DC movie. And that is was a female-led movie is just icing on the cake. I don't want to count my chicks before they're hatched, but I'm super excited for the Gotham City Sirens and Batgirl movies now. They could be equally great if given the same creative respect as this film had. After I left the theatre opening weekend, I really had to limit myself with Wonder Woman movie collectibles. It's my collecting impulse to horde plastic representations of all things I love. But I really restrained myself and limited my purchases to the Mattel Multiverse and these Rock Candy figures. I think I'm going to be a completist with DC and Marvel Rock Candy. I'll skip necessary repaints, but original sculpts are too tempting for me to pass up. These two figures are gorgeous and do not disappoint. Let's check them out below!

Rock Candy - WOMEN OF MARVEL!
I've had this group of Marvel Rock Candy figures forever but have been delaying posting them out of sheer laziness. I'm really impressed with this line overall and I'm so glad to see it growing in leaps and bounds. It seems like every few weeks there's a new announcement, and I'm already finding myself being very selective with my purchases. If I manage to find the exclusive Gwenpool and Red She-Hulk Rock Candys in the next few weeks I'll want to post on them right away and I didn't want to be caught too far behind with this first Marvel wave. The Rock Candy line started a little over a year ago with a DC Wave and was followed up several months later with this first batch of Marvel figures. I was a little bummed when I realized that, yet again, the Marvel figures must be bobble-heads. But I found that by jamming some tissue up in the head you can make it stay still in a normal position and overall I'm very happy with this group. (I'm still shocked there wasn't a Masked Captain Marvel variant though). Let's check them out!

Funko Guardians of the Galaxy MANTIS Collection!
One of the things I'm most excited about with the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 movie is to get to know the character Mantis better. I've always noticed her in the comics, but her character's origins and powers always confused me. Although her look has changed pretty drastically over the years, her signature antennae and Asian features have remained constant. But as far as her powers and origins go, I've always been kind of lost. She can communicate with plants and certain alien races, she is empathic, she's a martial arts master, and she has bizarre control over her body (like heartbeat and bleeding). And now in her most recent incarnations she's also a telepathic precog. Her background is equally muddy. With depowerings, mindwipes, time travel, and celestial prophecies, it's kind of hard to keep straight. That's why I'm looking forward to the movie version. I'm assuming they'll take the best parts of the character and make it as cohesive as possible. Plus her look is very cool update of the comic design.

Rock Candy - HARLEY QUINN (New 52)!
When DC launched the New 52 back in 2011, I was left with a lot of conflicting emotions. On the positive side, some of my favorites like Barbara Gordon Batgirl, Amethyst, and Hawk & Dove were all making comebacks. But on the negative side were some really unfortunate costume changes. Some, like Poison Ivy's, really grew on me after a while, but this red and blue ill-fitting corset with clown collar and thigh-high socks is just about the most ridiculous outfit I've even seen on Harley. (Yet somehow it looks pretty cute on a Rock Candy). She only wore this in the 2011 Suicide Squad series which lasted about 30 issues and for the first few issues of New Suicide Squad in 2014 before it got phased out in favor of her Rollergirl costume. Funko made some good choices with their Summer Exclusives this year. Neither this costume nor the Purple Catwoman are iconic enough to be absolute must-haves for collectors, but they are really fun if you have the resources to hunt them down. Rock Candy - CATWOMAN (Purple Suit)!
I've never been a huge fan of the 1990's Purple-suited Jim Balent Catwoman. I didn't like much about superhero comics at all in the 90s and even a favorite character of mine like Selina wasn't an exception. I felt that her constantly gritted teeth, oversized chest, and impractical mane of hair was just silly. The gray catsuit that preceded it and the Darwyn Cooke version that succeeded it were two of my favorites, but the purple one always made me wince. That said, I think this SDCC/Hot Topic exclusive is too cute for words. I'm now a big fan of these Rock Candy figures. They don't really fit in with my collection, but that's never stopped me before - although I'm strictly limiting myself to Bat-family characters for real estate reasons. I expected these SDCC/Summer Exclusives to be impossible to find. But I was able to preorder one for myself easily, and then this afternoon I went into my Hot Topic and they had 5 or 6 of her. Hopefully all my future hunts go so smoothly. Let's check out Catwoman below!

Rock Candy - HARLEY QUINN!
With all the hype we are already starting to hear about Harley Quinn in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie, I really hope there will still be a presence of the Classic Harley in the merchandising world. I think there will be. Between this Rock Candy figure and the recent 12" Mattel Harley, I think the popularity of Dr. Quinzel is already creating many ripples throughout the collectible world. This Harley Quinn Rock Candy figure is pretty adorable. I'm really digging the style of these figures and I'm really hoping we get more. A movie version of Harley is probably a given, but I also think Poison Ivy and a couple versions of Catwoman are highly likely. Who knows, even less popular Bat-ladies like Huntress and Batwoman could enter the mix. I'd buy them all honestly. I've seen these figures at the variety of prices, but they're usually just under the ten dollar mark. Funko definitely has a knack for producing inexpensive but high quality products. Rock Candy - BATGIRL (CLASSIC)!
Batgirl's classic look is one of the most nostalgic costumes for me in all of comicdom. In the late eighties I lived in a small town with three thriving comic shops and even a baseball card shop with a few long boxes of back issues in the corner. In all my hours spent flipping through backissues, my biggest treasures were always old copies of Batman Family. These comics were about 50 pages each (a major bargain in dollar bins!) and included original stories as well as reprinted silver age stories. As the name Family in the title suggests, these stories all seemed to feature the secondary characters in the Batman universe. This version of Batgirl was a major presence in these issues and I was smitten over her. Of course, in the present-day comics on the the same time, Batgirl was being crippled by the Joker, so my discovery of her coexisted with my first bouts of nerd rage. Still, my memories are mostly fond ones, and this Rock Candy vinyl figure brings all those nostalgic feelings racing back. Thanks Funko!

Rock Candy - BATGIRL (BURNSIDE)!
Vinyl Sugar has a lot of interesting product lines in the Funko arsenal. Up until now, the only ones I have been buying are Dorbz, but the Vinyl Vixens were always very tempting to me, basically because the character lineup seems specifically tailored to me. All my favorite Bat-family characters in one female-centric collector line. However, the design of those figures is very off-putting to me. The scale and proportions reminded me of Bratz a little too much. Not to mention the eyes with their creepy sexy gazes (imo). I would always stop and look at these figures in stores but would walk away wishing they were smaller, had more proportionate heads, and looked cuter. I honestly never expected such a product to exist, but then a year later here we have Rock Candy, the smaller, cuter Vinyl Vixens. While this is still not my ideal collectible, I am really excited about this line. I'm especially impressed that the first wave has two distinct Batgirls.
