I have a great appreciation for the 1990's Marvel action figures from ToyBiz. I remember seeing ads in comics as a kid and thinking that I should buy them all, but I just never did. In fact the first one I bought was near the end of the era, a Magik I found in a Kay-Bee clearance bin for a dollar circa 1999. But as an adult, I've become pretty obsessed with them for their character variety, classic costumes, and creative re-use of molds. I also have a strong compulsion to collect every piece of merchandise for certain characters (especially when there is a new Marvel Legends released to motivate me), so backtracking to pick up these old figures on eBay is a common occurance for me. The new Marvel Legends Medusa inspired me to dig out this old Medusa ToyBiz figure that I've had forever, but sadly never really celebrated. She's a prime example of what I love about the 90's ToyBiz figures: and unexpected character in a classic design (and easy to pick up cheap, even 30 years later. Let's check out Medusa below!

Marvel Legends - MEDUSA (v2)!
As much as I appreciate the effort put into the two Marvel Legends Medusa figures we've seen so far, I must admit that neither of them really capture the essence of the character to me. When I think of Medusa, I either think of the classic Jack Kirby design with a broad face, a mature body, and large unruly hair or a more modern look with a regal almost goddess-like demeanor, a somewhat angry detached expression, and dynamic, intimidating hair. Both seem admittedly difficult to represent in plastic. But that doesn't stop me from having high expectations. This recent Walgreens Medusa (which is a retooled 2014 SDCC Medusa) has a nondescript face, a rather thin body, and hair that looks long and dynamic, but not necessarily powerful or prehensile. Don't get me wrong, these figures are pretty terrific, but I still think we're in need of a definitive Medusa. I'm thinking she would make a fantastic Marvel Select figure. Hopefully the Inhumans show has lasting power to give her potential merchandise more momentum.

Marvel Legends SDCC Exclusive MEDUSA!
Convention Exclusives are getting harder and harder to come by in recent years. I remember even a just a few years ago lazily logging onto Hasbrotoyshop a month or so after ComicCon and casually deciding whether or not to pick up some of the exclusives. This was the case with Sunfire, Ka-Zar and Shanna, and the Pink Prime Arcee at least. But lately it's become a ruthless sport of screen refreshing and speed typing. I'm horrible at that game. Luckily I have made a few real-life toy friends who totally help me out (thanks again, Carl!). Medusa is the Queen of the Inhumans, a prehistoric race that lives on the moon. I've read my fair share of comics starring the Inhumans and I always view Medusa as having a cold, detached, royal demeanor.. only to contradict herself by being fiercely protective and maternal. This action figure was a long time coming. I see Medusa as an underused A-list Marvel heroine with criminally few representations in plastic. At least we got this beauty. Let's check her out below!

Marvel Universe MEDUSA!
I get the feeling that we're never going to get another single-carded female in the Marvel Universe line. Sure, they say we're getting Elektra and Dagger, but until I see them on the shelves I'll hold on to my doubts. I actually don't mind buying the team packs and comic sets though, because I have a pretty quick turnaround time unloading my unwanted figures on eBay. But at the same time, I'm not going to keep buying extra characters forever. This is fair warning Hasbro: Stop hiding the good heroines in multi-packs! Okay rant over. Medusa is a pretty interesting character. I feel like every story I've read with her portrays her differently. Sometimes she's regal, sometimes snotty, sometimes flirty, and more recently, kind of devious. She's currently a replacement member of the Fantastic Four in FF and I have a gut feeling I'm not going to like her character very much in the coming months. This figure is a massive improvement over the recently released (and reviewed) Mockingbird. Medusa is better proportioned and articulated, and that makes a world of difference.
