Once again the Marvel Unlimited exclusive figure has given us a fun variant we might have never seen in plastic otherwise. In June 2024, there was a variant cover of Spider-Woman #7 by artist Peach Momoko featuring Jessica Drew in a black spider suit with some face markings that implied this was a symbiote. This was a one-off image that did not correlate to the story (very similar to 2020's Kamala Khan as Spider-Girl, which was also from a single cover illustration). But it makes for a perfect exclusive figure. Meaning: this is not a crucial, nor even canonical, figure to own; but she's awesome for super-fans; and she is made from some simple repurposed parts (The 2019 Polaris head was a surprising choice, but it works well). I'm already so curious what obscure figure will be revealed for next year's subscription. I have a ton of ideas. But I will personally get most excited for any new Spider-Lady figure to my collection (so I knew this Momoko design was an instant must-have). Let's check out Spider-Woman below!

Be@rbricks - SPIDER-WOMEN!
Be@rbricks are a 2001 spin-off of Medicom Toy's popular Kubrick line. The standard Be@rbrick figures are 7cm tall and feature a generic anthropomorphic bear sculpt with a potbelly and ears in a block-figure style. I find the combination of this default sculpt overlayed with recognizable character designs to be fun and quirky. The concept has been duplicated often, notably with Disney's 2008 Vinylmation line, but I find the original Be@rbricks to be the most appealing. Twenty-five years into the line, and the character selection is predictably daunting. Luckily I always narrow my focus my to superheroes which makes the hunt a lot more reasonable. Recently I discovered that a Spider-Man wave was released in 2022 with a variety of Spider-Ladies. They were pretty easy and inexpensive to pick up on eBay, but now I'm inspired to pick up others like DC and MCU. I suspect I will have a large assortment of these odd little bears by this time next year. But in the meantime, let's check out the Spider-Ladies below!

Marvel Legends 3.75" Retro - SPIDER-WOMAN!
I've been delaying making a post about this figure because I find it so depressing that this was the final release in the amazing Marvel Legends Retro line. It was a short-lived line from 2021-2023 but managed to give up nine awesome female figures, all in a nostalgic "Secret-Wars-esque" style with costume and character choices specific to the late-70s-to-early-80s era. In my mind, Dazzler, She-Hulk, and Mystique would have been among the obvious next releases. But even if we would be destined to only get repaints, Julia Carpenter, White Elektra, and Mary Jane Watson (from Black Widow?) would have been welcome additions. I just saw so much potential in this line and was so sad to see it unceremoniously come to an early end (or "pause"). But luckily the final two figures, Firestar and this Jessica Drew Spider-Woman, were my most wanted figures, and they are pretty perfect. Few characters embody the Marvel gender revolution of this era like Spider-Woman. Let's check out Jessica below!

Marvel Legends Vintage - SPIDER-WOMAN!
In the 2013-2015 timeframe, Hasbro's Marvel Legends line made some major advancements in the quality of their female figures. Prior to this, the females were all rather unfortunate-looking. They had spindly limbs and waists, with oversized heads and hands, and had an overall spider-like appearance. But then the Moonstone (2013) figure unveiled a new female sculpt and the awkward phase was over. One of the best early uses of the buck was a classic Jessica Drew Spider-Woman. So flash forward 8 years and I'm excited to see this modern redeco of the same wonderful sculpt and it brings back lots of great memories. Jessica Drew began wearing this costume in the 2020 reboot of Spider-Woman (technically volume 7), and wore it for about ten issues before reverting to her classic red. It was a brief blip in the grand scheme of things, but is easily my favorite Jessica variation and was definitely deserving of a figure (and a fun chance to see this sculpt again). Marvel Legends - SPIDER-WOMAN!
When we got the first modern Julia Carpenter Spider-Woman Marvel Legends figure back in 2019, I was very happy. I thought it was the best Spider-Lady figure in the line so far. But at the same time I had a hunch we would see another release of her before too long. My prediction was only partially right because I assumed we would see a purple repaint from the 1994 Iron Man animated series. But I should have guessed that a "first appearance" design was an even more likely option. The Julia Carpenter version of Spider-Woman first appeared in Secret Wars #7 (1984) wearing stark black and white spider outfit that was instantly iconic (and soon plagiarized by Peter Parker himself). By the early 90s she had joined The West Coast Avengers and become a staple character. Her popularity may boom next year due to her role in the upcoming Madame Web (2024) film played by Sydney Sweeney, so I guess an updated Julia figure was inevitable. She looks great. Marvel Legends - JESSICA DREW!
I saw a Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse on its final day of IMAX last Wednesday. This movie season has been tight with a new blockbuster every week keeping the IMAX schedule short. Anyway, a friend offered me a last minute ticket and I jumped at the chance. I liked everything about it, but one of my favorite things was the reimagining of Jessica Drew. I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to my female super-heroes, so I'm surprised I liked her so much. Not much is different from the 2015-2016 comic Jessica Drew aside from her race and personality. That version of Jessica was pregnant, wore a utilitarian suit with yellow googles, and rode a motorcycle. So the distinguishing characteristic in the movie version was mainly her race. I may be the only person with this idea, but my first thought was that she was a subtle nod to Valerie from the Electric Company Super Spidey Stories. Of course my second thought was that I would never think that if there was more diversity in the Spider world.

POP Funko - SPIDER-WOMAN!
Mattie Franklin has a very interesting history. She was introduced in the Spider-Man comics just a few months after Mayday Parker debuted in 1998. But it wasn't until May of 1999 when she donned a costume and was introduced as (the third) Spider-Woman. Her powers came about via ritualistic magic, and origins like that never seem to turn out well. It's almost as if there is karmic retribution for achieving powers unnaturally. Mattie's stories took some pretty macabre turns later on, but for the majority of her 18-issue solo series she was a fun character who constantly had new costumes and shifting power sets. The Funko Pop costume is one of her later looks from issue #12 onward. It was at this point when she absorbed the powers of Charlotte Witter and was able to grow organic spider legs from her back. She has has an understated presence in the Marvel Universe since her series ended. And aside from two HeroClix figures, this is her first time in plastic. Let's check out Mattie below!

Marvel Mini-Mates - SPIDER-WOMAN!
I generally like the trend of superheroes donning utilitarian versions of their costumes. Burnside Batgirl, Darwyn Cooke Catwoman, and most of the Marvel Ultimate Universe are all amazing. But the pendulum almost always swings back and the bright spandex makes a glorious return. Jessica Drew's Spider-Woman had a remarkably unchanged costume from her debut in 1978 all the way until 2015 when she donned this modern utilitarian getup consisting of a form-fitting (leather?) jacket and yellow glasses. She wore it for roughly two years in her solo titles, then was out of the limelight until her new 2020 title featuring a black variation of her classic costume. I was hesitant about this jacketed version at first, but it grew on me and I'm glad we got some merchandise to commemorate this phase in her evolution. And of course Marvel Mini-Mates would have to include her. No other toy line has shown more dedication to the pantheon of Spider-Ladies than them. Let's check her out below!

Marvel Vinylmation - SPIDER-LADIES!
It's hard to deny the popularity of vinyl collectibles. These days, when you visit a collectible toy store, chances are it will be largely dedicated to vinyls (which can be unfortunate). While the Funko Pop line is the current industry leader, they weren't the first, and they won't be the last. But about a decade ago, it seemed like every single company took a shot on the fad. One of the more prominent lines was Vinylmation from Disney. They started in 2008 as Disney park exclusives, but soon they were in every Disney Store and all over the secondary market. Vinylmation used the successful blind box formula of a standard quirky mold with unique paint designs. Bearbricks, Dunny, and Labbit had laid the groundwork, and Disney had a guaranteed hit with an iconic Mickey Mouse body and an endless supply of popular licenses to tap into. Of course, even successful toy lines rarely last forever, and by 2017 these were all but extinct. The Spider-Ladies were my obvious favorite. Let's check them out below!

Marvel Legends - SPIDER-WOMAN (JULIA!)
This Julia Carpenter Spider-Woman figure is one of my most-wished-for Marvel Legends. I've honestly never even read a Julia story that I enjoyed. Her real prominence was in the 1990s, and I always find that decade to be defined by dubious storytelling and art (at least where superheroes were concerned). But to me she will always be a super iconic Marvel heroine. Her costume is so cool that it even inspired Spider-Man's black suit. Marvel Legends has given us an insane amount of Spiders in the last five years, and Julia was glaringly absent (especially considering she's the second most noteworthy Spider-Lady). But the wait was worth it because this figure is perfection. She's a perfect blend of classic and modern (well, her hair is modern... thankfully). Now I need to re-assess my Spider-Man Legends wishlist... Mania, Agony, Lady Spider, Mattie Franklin, etc. I would love them all. But all the super important ones are now in my collection and i'm extremely happy about that. Let's check out Julia Carpenter below!

Marvel POP! Vinyl - SPIDER-WOMAN!
I told myself a while ago that I was going to stop doing full photo reviews for Funko Pops. They're just so abundant (and stationary) that they don't make for exciting reviews. Instead, I now just post a few simple shots on instagram and leave the full photo sets for action figures. But then this NYCC 2018 Spider-Woman POP was announced and I knew I would backtrack and give her the full treatment. I love the bright iconic costume of the classic Jessica Drew Spider-Woman and I always thought she was a glaring omission from the Marvel POP lineup. Unfortunately she was a NYCC exclusive (shared with Entertainment Earth) so she wasn't super easy to come by. It was actually very hard for me to obtain one with a decent paint job (this particular lady was my third purchase). But I think she's my favorite Pop in years so she was worth it. I'm really hoping we somehow get a Rock Candy of her. The Pop, Pint-Size Hero and Mystery Mini need a taller companion. (C'mon subscription boxes!) Let's check out Spider-Woman below!

Pin-Mates SPIDER-LADIES and BAT-LADIES!
I'm kind of obsessed with these Pin-Mate figures from Bif Bang Pow! Throughout my childhood my home was littered with Fisher-Price Little People. My siblings and I had a ton. We had really old wooden ones and more modern plastic ones. But they were all in the simple peg-style of the time (not like the chubby vinyl things the line has morphed into now). And when we wanted to add more characters to our playsets, we would decorate one-piece wooden clothespins with markers and crayons to add to our ranks. When I first saw these PinMates, I half loved them and half hated them. But after I picked up a few and they continued to roll out cool characters, I'm definitely a fan. I have a handful of Bat-Ladies and Spider-Ladies, and now I want more. I've skipped a few cool movie-based characters (like Gamora, Nebula, Mantis, Hela, and Suicide Squad Harley Quinn) because I dig the retro and comic styles a lot more. But now I want Silk, Anya Corazon, Huntress, Poison Ivy, and a ton of others. Let's check them out below!

Marvel Legends - SPIDER-WOMAN (Modern)!
Action figures have this funny way of making me appreciate character designs that I really don't care for on the comic page. My reaction to this costume was very interesting. Batgirl's popular Burnside costume was unveiled in December '14 and I loved the fun utilitarian look. It made sense with the non-powered Gotham characters and their gritty environment. But then five months later in April '15, Spider-Woman got a similar redeco and I was not so happy. I just don't expect characters with legit powers to don stylized street clothes over spandex. Jessica Drew's new costume also marked a big shift in the artistic style for the series. Similar to a lot of titles at the time (coincidentally like Batgirl), the new art direction was much more Indy, which is a style I love in Indy comics, but I always prefer a more traditional style with my superhero books. So overall I haven't really been impressed with this makeover, but then this Legends figure comes out and I suddenly love it. Go figure. Let's check her out below!

Marvel Select - SPIDER-GWEN!
It's amazing how quickly Spider-Gwen has become an A-list hero. I've already decided not to be a completist with her merchandise because it's coming out at a very rapid pace. Considering that her first toy, a TRU exclusive Minimate came out only two years ago, that's a very impressive rise - especially considering she hasn't been in a film, or even had a significant role in a cartoon yet. The Marvel Select line from DST has been blowing my mind recently. Back in the day, I felt that these figures were awkwardly pre-posed and had awkward articulation and diorama pieces (I remember being very disappointed in She-Hulk). But between this Spider-Gwen and the recent Lady Deadpool, I am now super impressed with the line. The sculpt, articulation, and scale is just great all-around. The only thing that keeps me from being a die-hard fan is the very slow release schedule. Lines like Marvel Legends are much more satisfying purely due to the speedy production. I'm thinking we will eventually get a (movie) Gamora and an apology She-Hulk, but any figures with this level of quality will easily find a spot in my collection.

Marvel's Spider-Man - Animated SPIDER-GWEN!
I was very excited back in June when several news sites lit up with images of a mysterious set of Spider-Man figures showing up in China. These figures are based off an upcoming animated Disney XD show called Marvel's Spider-Man (August 19th premiere). When these images came out, not much was known about this show and these figures are probably the first real glimpse into the cast. The big question though is if these are licensed figures or straight-up bootlegs. The company name is pretty generic. It translates as "Action Toys" or "Moving Toys," their feet are embossed with "ZD Toys", and an accepted online colloquial title is Amitoys (but I can't figure out where that name came from). Last year this same company released a mysterious Marvel-Legends-like set of Avengers toys and currently they also have a few Guardians of the Galaxy figures trickling out. The figures are nicely made, inexpensive, accurate to the properties, and have original sculpts (and scales). These are very fascinating toys.

Marvel Chess Collection - THE SPIDER-LADIES!
I hope Eaglemoss never stops making comic figurines. They started with the Classic Marvel Figurine Collection in 2007 and soon launched their DC Comics equivalent the year after. When both series ran their course, they began making Chess Pieces of the characters and the series continued. I count about 600 unique figures between DC and Marvel, and they're still coming. I thought I was showing great restraint with this line by only buying my favorite-of-favorites. But I just counted and I somehow acquired 37 over the years (including a purchase this afternoon - Hela). One of my greatest Eaglemoss joys came last year when there was a Spider-Man themed Chess series and they released four awesome modern Spider-Woman: Spider-Gwen, Spider-Girl (Anya), Silk, and a modern Jessica Drew Spider-Woman (which I think is the only representation of this look in plastic so far.. not even a Heroclix or Minimate). Eaglemoss has a knack for reading my mind when it comes to character selection. Let's check them out!

Marvel Tsum Tsum - WOMEN OF POWER!
I can't say I really understand the Tsum Tsum trend. They started in Japan (of course) as a cute stackable line of plush Disney character collectibles. I always thought they were supposed to be gerbils or something, but apparently they are shaped this way just to be stackable. Either way, between the fact that they were plush, large (7-11"), over-stlyistic (in my opinion), and centered on characters I wasn't interested in collecting, they were just completely off my radar. Then the Marvel characters started and I began to pay attention. But I still wasn't tempted because of the plush thing. Then along comes Jakks with a license to produce small vinyl versions. I honestly wasn't planning to get any until I came across this 9-figure Women of POWer set at Walmart. Getting an instant collection like that was quite an incentive. I actually think I will try to get all the ladies in the collection now that I'm only missing a few. They're pretty cute little additions to my collections. Let's check out the Women of Power below!

Gentle Giant SPIDER-WOMAN Bust!
I really like the mini-bust format. I avoided it for the longest time, but when I realized that it can truly be some of the best representations of my favorite characters, I opened my wallet and caved. I've assembled quite a collection of my A-list heroines over the years, but I've always been really disappointed by my options with the classic Jessica Drew Spider-Woman. There are a handful of high end collectibles out there, but none of them ever had that instant "wow" factor I need to make a purchase over 50 bucks. But then this lovely bust was introduced (way back in 2012) and I had a feeling this would be the one for me. I was really lazy about tracking her down because I have found so many bargains over the years by being patient, and luckily she was no exception. In person she looks great and really becomes a focal point of Spider-Woman collection. (She also happens to be one of the largest busts I own at 7.5" tall -- which makes quite an impact). Funko POP Marvel Heroes SPIDER-GWEN(S)!
Funko is just killing it lately. In the past month the presence of Funko products in my personal collection has practically doubled. Not only have they been producing all my favorite characters in rapid succession, but they've been surprising us with last-minute exclusives. Just when I thought I was done hunting down all the Suicide Squad Harleys, I was on the prowl for all the Spider-Gwens. Luckily it didn't take me long at all. I need to save some energy to hunt down the Golden Girls, Dark Crystal and Labyrinth POPs in the next few months. Not to mention all the SDCC exclusives that I have no clue how I will get (if anyone is going to SDCC and planning on standing in line for exclusives - and would love to do me a favor - please drop me a line ;)). Spider-Gwen has only been around for two short years but has already had a decent amount of merchandise. And in the next year we're getting a ton more from Monogram, Kotobukiya, etc. It's going to be an exciting year. Let's check out the three newest Gwens below!

Marvel Mini-Mates - SPIDER-GWEN!
Spider-Gwen is my favorite new character design of the past few years. I remember being on vacation in the Summer of 2014 and seeing her in an advertisement for the Edge of Spider-Verse series without any indication of who she was. I wouldn't discover her name for another month, and by that time the whole world had taken notice. A year later I sold her first appearance (variant cover) for almost $400 on eBay. Her Marvel Legends figure was unveiled only 8 months after her first appearance. Toy nerds will know that's an almost unheard-of turnaround time. This mini-mate figure though is the first toy on the market. I have been insanely hunting her for about a month now (I'm still scarred over missing out on the Angel & Warpath TRU 2-Pack years ago). I finally found her on New Year's Eve to my great relief. We have a bunch of great Spider-Lady Mini-mates already, so Gwen is a fantastic addition to the crew. (Now we need a Silk pronto!)
