This West Coast Avengers boxset has been providing me more joy than I would have expected. I was never a huge fan of this team. I have picked up a few random issues here and there, but they never stuck. But since those days I have developed an immense appreciation for several of the team members on an individual basis. When I think of a team-based boxset, this is exactly the composition I would expect: a majority of female characters (because the figures regularly left unproduced for a team roster are almost always female), simple retools of a existing characters as a cost-saver, and an overall unlikely assortment (from a retail-demand perspective at least). This set was very unexpected but easily gave me my top three favorite female Legends for the year (so far). The Julia Carpenter redeco is wonderful. Same for Tigra in muted colors and a new head. But the standout of the whole set is Mockingbird in her classic domino mask and puffy sleeves. She's perfect. Let's check out Mockingbird below!

Marvel Legends - MOCKINGBIRD!
Hasbro has been doing an awesome job of making first-time Marvel Legends figures of deserving characters lately. Mockingbird has been around for over 40 years but has received very little merchandising. The recent Valkyrie, Medusa, Hela, Gamora, and Hellcat figures are just a few similar characters who are highly recognizable in the Marvel Universe (and who have been around for decades), but always seemed unlikely for Marvel Legends treatment. This is actually kind of bad because now I think that anyone is possible. Maybe a classic Polaris or Firestar will be unveiled next week at Toy Fair. At this rate we're bound to see them eventually. Of course, Mockingbird, Hellcat, and Gamora all have media tie-ins to TV shows and movies now, which is a sure-fire way to get the green light for a Legends figure. Perhaps I need to start bribing TV writers to incorporate my favorite characters into the shows. I need to start scheming. Let's check out the long-awaited Mockingbird below!

Marvel Universe MOCKINGBIRD!
Mockingbird is one of those characters that I love but I'm not really sure why. I first took notice of her back in her Avengers West Coast days. She doesn't have any discernible powers (although she apparently does have a trace of Captain America's Super Soldier Serum in her). She's essentially just a good fighter and a perpetual love interest for Hawkeye (and occasionally Ka-Zar). I think the appeal lies in her classic costume and weaponry. Mockingbird usually carries a pair of escrima sticks (like Nightwing) that can be attached together into a bo staff. She died near the end of the Avengers West Coast series when she sacrificed herself to save Hawkeye from Mephisto. That was in the early 1990s and she was basically a forgotten character until she was very cleverly brought back during 2008's Secret Invasion storyline. Since then she's been all over the place, appearing in a variety of Marvel comics, most recently in the revamped Secret Avengers. She has very very few products made of her.
