This 7" Pixar line from Mattel is unexpectedly awesome. I say unexpectedly because I don't typically buy figures from genres that aren't superhero or sci-fi. Sure, I've seen and enjoyed every Pixar movie so far, but I can honestly say I've never finished a film saying "oh man I need action figures of these characters." But when this line started hitting the shelves last year I was really intrigued at the quality and scale of the figures. Especially at the price point of roughly 10 dollars per figure (so 20 for this 2-pack). The first one I bought was Merida from Brave, followed by a few Incredibles. Then I realized they paired well with my Toy Story 4 Bo Peep figure. I didn't know how many others I would buy, but then I saw this amazing Celia figure from Monsters, Inc. I love odd characters with alien-like features, and her cyclops eye, medusa hair, and octopus legs always thrilled me. Even in this Pixar-specific line, she is not a character I ever expected to see, but I'm ecstatic that she was. Let's check out Celia below!

PJ Masks - OCTOBELLA!
The properties being taken over by Hasbro aren't contained to popular collector lines like Fortnite and Power Rangers. Long-lasting preschool lines like PJ Masks have also changed production. Just Play Toys had been making these toys for years and I had acquired a small collection. But when toylines like this (that I only sporadically collect) start over, I get a bit fatigued and rarely continue buying them. But a big exception occurs when they start off with inclusion of an amazing new character. And this Octobella is a prime example of that. I love aquatic characters, and tentacled ladies are especially intriguing to me. Octobella is a villain introduced in Season 3 but not fully featured until Season 4. She is specifically an antagonist to Gekko and I'm obsessed with her design. Her unexpected inclusion makes me hopeful for a Batarina (the purple bat hero) and Orticia (the punky plant villain). Spidey and His Amazing Friends - DOC OCK!
In recent years I've become obsessed with female characters in the Spider-Man Universe. It started with Ultimate Spider-Woman back in 2006 and has branched out since then. It's amazing that I thought Jessica Drew was boring for her first 30 years, but now I'm a superfan. Most of these female characters are spider-based heroes, but equally intriguing are the gender-swapped members of the Sinister Six. Besides a few Heroclix and Mini-mates, this Doc Ock from the preschool Spidey and His Amazing Friends line is the first true action figure of any of them. I think a Francine Frye Electro or Tiana Toomes Starling would make amazing Marvel Legends figures, and with the frequency of Spider-Man waves released I think there is actually a decent potential for them. I don't know if this animated version of Doc Ock has a civilian name in the cartoon or not, but she seems like a unique incarnation of the character to me. I'm really excited to see what this line gives us next. Let's check out Doc Ock below!

Transformers - SCYLLA!
The Seacons were a group of aquatic-themed antagonists in 1988's Super-God Masterforce. They shared a pink and teal color palette and could combine to form Piranacon. The team was impactful but didn't stay around too long. In 1997, their designs were re-introduced in Beast Warriors II as the Space Pirate Seacons in a white and gold palette. They were technically all new characters with new names and personalities, but the designs were identical... except for Scylla who replaced the deceased Tentakil. From all the episodes I've seen, Scylla is largely present for comic relief in the form of unwanted flirtation, and of course to form a leg of God Neptune. The vintage Scylla figure was just a repaint of the male Tentakil, but in this newest TakaraTomy release she gets a massive retooling using a mashup of Moonracer and Tentakil parts (plus a brand new torso and head). The God Neptune set was a Pulse Exclusive for preorder in 2020, but just released a few months ago. Let's check out Scylla below.

I Am Elemental - ELEMENTS OF WISDOM!
Sometimes I buy a lot of action figures all at once and then get overwhelmed at the thought of opening, photographing, and displaying them. That is literally the only drawback to maintaining this website; I no longer get to experience the frantic tearing open of my toys as soon as I get them home. But on the plus side, the photography process has created a new unboxing ritual that is very enjoyable in its own way... when I eventually get around to it. That brings us to one of my favorite toy lines in recent memory: I Am Elemental. I've had this second series unopened on a storage shelf for 4 years, which is a shame because this is an amazing line that I'm excited to display. The colorfully costumed heroines, the crayola spectrum of skintones, and the trademark domino masks create a unique product that is unlike anything else out there. And this Wisdom series stepped it up a notch with even brighter colors and wilder accessories. I can't believe I sat on them so long. Let's check them out below!

Splatoon's INKLING GIRL!
It takes a lot to get me interested in modern Video Games these days. I've been over first person shooter games since Doom. I don't have the hand coordination for all the new buttons. And all the new legacy games like Mario, Zelda, and Final Fantasy pale in comparison to the originals (imo). So my fascination with Splatoon is pretty special indeed. Splatoon is a 2015 3rd person shooter team game featuring these cool Inkling characters. They're little elf-like creatures that can morph into squids and blast each other with colorful ink (paintball-style). The Inklings have a variety of different appearances, but they all have domino masks, punky clothes, and cool hair. I especially love when their hair has squid tentacles like this Inkling Girl figure. Another cool aspect of the game are the teams. I'm always a sucker for monochromatic themes so seeing a group of blue, green, pink, or oranged-hued characters all together satisfies some deep aesthetic impulse within me. I love it all. The Women of THE OUTER SPACE MEN!
I love the retro toy trend of the past few years. It seems like every few months I hear about another company taking the plunge into retro styled toys. BifBangPow, Funko ReAction, and Fresh Monkey Fiction are all taking part. But the Four Horsemen's Outer Space Men line seems special. They've taken a somewhat forgotten toy line from the 1960s and breathed new life into it with modern Glyos technology and creative use of transparent plastics. And the absolute best part (in my humble opinion) is that the original creator, Mel Birnkrant, has created additional female characters for all the various extra-terrestrial species. So far, three have been produced (with a fourth Astrodite figure being shown at the 2013 Extra-Toyrrestrial event, but as of yet unreleased). The final three designs (Poseida, Moltina, and Dezdemona) will hopefully be produced someday, because the designs are awesome and these initial three figures are amazing. Kamen Rider's Sinister Seawitch MEZOOL!
Hot on the heels of the Octavia review earlier this week, comes another aquatic-themed lady with a killer design. (Get it? ..killer?) Kamen Rider OOO is the 21st installment of Japan's famed Kamen Rider Series. Kamen Rider had a brief run in the US as the translated series Masked Rider, but it didn't have the staying power of other Toei properties like Power Rangers. I don't necessarily watch any of these series, but I am a huge fan of the costume and character design and I have a ton of figures to commemorate my obsession. Mezool is one of my newer acquisitions but definitely one of my favorites. Who would have ever thought that having a freakin' Orca Whale on your head could make you look sinister?? I've seen hats at SeaWorld that are very similar to this, but somehow they don't have the same effect when I wear them. This figure is in the style of the Kamen Hero and Sentai Hero Series. They are 7" scale lightweight hollow vinyl figures with limited articulation (2-3 points), great sculpts, and a low price point. I'm a big fan of this style and I wish we had something similar here in the US. Let's check her out below!

The Horde's Aquatican Warrior OCTAVIA!
Octavia has my favorite design of all the Horde characters in She-Ra. I've mentioned in these reviews before that I have a penchant for characters with unnatural skin tones. Octavia definitely fits the bill in this case. I also have a great love for anthropomorphic characters and this hybrid fish/octopus design is amazing. I may love Octavia's design, but her presence in the cartoon was unfortunately marred by a horrendous voice. A lot of the She-Ra characters had crazy voices, but Octavia sounded like Catra gagging on phlegm with a mouthful of marbles. It was pretty ridiculous. Octavia only appeared in two episodes of the show but still managed to make quite an impression on me as a kid. An action figure of her wasn't even something I had thought possible. Between the initial restriction against Filmation characters and her blink-and-you-miss-her cartoon presence, I figured she was a pipe dream. This figure though, wow, this is definitely not one of those "well, I'm just glad we got her" appreciative reviews. She is truly stunning. Possibly the coolest and most dynamic girl in my MOTUC collection. Let's check her out below!

Women of Halloween Part 3 - FUNKO POP! WITCHES
The POP! Vinyl Line From Funko Shows Us How Adorable Dark Side Can Be
Welcome to the third installment in my month-long Halloween celebration of the wickedest plastic women on the market. I have been dying to find an justification to collect more Funko POP figures. I have being buying their female super-heroes but they are released in a painfully slow trickle. I had been wanting to assemble a collection of classic movie villainesses for years, but scale and quality inconsistencies kept me from taking the plunge. Then one day earlier this year I made a fateful step into a Disney store where I saw their collection of Disney POPs. A few google searches later and I was hooked and a few months later I had a nice little collection going. I hope this line continues forever. There is so much potential for more fantastic characters and my fingers are crossed that we'll see them.
