In the second episode of G.I.Joe, The M.A.S.S. Device Part II, Slave of the Cobra Master (September 1983). Scarlett, Snake-Eyes, and Snowjob (and others) head deep into the Arctic to seek a red radioactive crystal (one of the three elements needed for the M.A.S.S. Device). The scene is relative brief, but memorable - especially because it is so early in the vast G.I.Joe canon. Super7 seems to love G.I.Joe The Movie and The M.A.S.S. Device. The number of ReAction figures they've made based on these two storylines is pretty amazing. A figure of Scarlett in an arctic parka was not on my bingo card at all, and if pressed I could come up with a handful of never-before-made characters I would have taken in place of her, but now that she's in my collection I'm pretty happy to have her. The exciting is that their character choices are getting so obscure that I have no idea what might be coming next. (I'm always hoping for Oktober Guard and more Cobra-La though!) Super7 ReAction - GLENDA!
As a longtime collector of G.I.Joe, there comes a time when the only exciting thing left is rather obscure rarities. Most avid fans will know that the early G.I.Joe molds were sometimes used by other countries. Occasionally this produced a fun variant with an abnormal color swap. But in other cases, it created a whole new character. The most notorious one of these new characters (in my female-centric opinion) was a blonde release of Scarlett wearing Silver and Blue under the name Glenda in the Argentinean Plastirima line. One of my first big collecting "wins" was nabbing an original Glenda at a decent price. Granted my version has a broken crotchpiece, a fused shoulder, and lots of paint rubs, but she's still a treasure of my collection. This Super7 Glenda was a surprise drop this past Summer that thrilled me. There have seen some half-baked homages to Glenda over the years (usually with red hair oddly), but this was the first true attempt to release her in the US. Let's check out Glenda below!

Super7 ReAction - SCARLETT (DIC)!
Shanna Scarlett O'Hara was a big deal in the original Sunbow-produced run of G.I.Joe. She was in a ton of episodes, was an implied love interest for the two main male heroes (Duke and Snake-Eyes) at different points, and she even garnered some backstory (which very few characters got). She was the main female hero of the series (with Lady Jaye being a close second). But when the series was rebooted by DIC Enterprises after a two year hiatus, she really seemed to lose her status. She didn't appear until episode 22 (of 44), and that was in a nonspeaking cameo. And only made 6 brief appearances after that before the series ended. In most of those episodes she appeared in a saturated redeco of her classic look, with purple arms and legs in place of gray/green. This ReAction figure was a surprise Super7 store exclusive a couple weeks ago in conjunction with the recent Target exclusive Baroness and Lady Jaye in their similar redeco'd looks. Super7 ReAction - TIGER FORCE SCARLETT!
Once again the Super7 ReAction line gives me vindication. I was a big fan of G.I.Joe in the eighties. Almost every kid was a fan, but for those of us that were obsessive and stuck with it as we grew up, we were rewarded with thematic factions like Python Patrol, Iron Grenadiers, Night Force, and Tiger Force. These were great because they almost always featured the classic characters in cool redecos. The problem for me was that they were always devoid of females. With the sole exception of Ninja Force Scarlett, the new factions were a total boys club. When the line rebooted in the early 2000s, Hasbro gave us a very cool Night Force Lady Jaye and a Tiger Force Jinx, but the initial exclusion still stung. This Tiger Force Scarlett feels like a figure we should have gotten back in '88 (albeit in 5poa), right down to the awkward stripes like Lifeline and Frostbite had. I hope they eventually make a ReAction Jinx so we can get her green Tiger Force repaint to pair with Scarlett. Here's hoping. Let's check out Scarlett!

G.I.Joe Classified - SCARLETT!
This Scarlett figure is the one I have wanted since the G.I.Joe Classified line launched four years ago. The first Scarlett, and even her repaint, just looked a bit off. The recipe of a red ponytail, crossbow, and some yellow-ish costume elements were all present, but somehow it just didn't look like Scarlett. The movie figure in 2021 looked a lot better, but of course she was in a dark cinematic costume. But then this surprise retro-carded figure was announced and finally gave us the iconic Scarlett design, seemingly with an all-new sculpt. This might be setting a good precedent for apology figures and/or massive retoolings in the retro line. Plus the cardback on this figure is super thick and durable like the Marvel Legends Vintage line (unlike the flimsy packaging of the first few releases). I admit I've been more excited by the Super7 Ultimates figures because I prefer classic animation aesthetics, but this figure has me very excited for the future of the Classified line. Fury Force - THE ROSE!
I don't usually dabble in 3rd Party art figures. But sometimes they are so well-made and fun that they are impossible to resist. And recently I tempted fate by going to a toy show that specialized in the genre of toy artistry. My favorite item of the show was this homage to G.I.Joe's Scarlett (aka The Rose) from the Fury Force line by Pop Prolific and Hammer of the Gods Toys. In my opinion, there has never been a really great licensed Scarlett figure until the very recent Super7 ReAction figure. But this Rose figure filled a void I didn't know existed: a classic looking Scarlett in the aesthetic of a vintage Masters of the Universe sculpt. I somehow never even considered these characters in a 5" scale. For so long, G.I.Joes were so locked in the 3.75" world that my brain still has trouble accepting the 6-7" Classified and Ultimates lines. But when I saw this figure, something clicked I just had to have her. And now I can't wait to see what future art toys I find. Jem would be insanely cool. Let's check out this beauty below!

Super7 ReAction - SCARLETT!
In 1987, G.I.Joe: The Movie was released and the classic era of G.I.Joe came to a close. New cartoon production ceased, the comics petered out, and the new toys had no real context anymore. (Batman was all the rage). But then in 1989 there was a new faction in the Cobra toyline that snatched my attention back: Python Patrol. These toys seemed classic, but refreshed and exciting. I didn't even watch the cartoons explaining the redecos until this Summer. (The new cartoons resumed in 1989 produced by DiC). The toys are very nostalgic to me since they mark by last childhood fascination with the property. This Summer, Super7 revealed the SDCC Exclusive Glow Patrol faction in their G.I.Joe ReAction line. While these are fantastic original decos on their own merit, my gut reaction was "OMG it looks like a Python Patrol Scarlett!" Python Patrol was all male Cobra characters, so this thought was nonsensical. But it's still what I think every time I see her. Let's check out Glow Patrol Scarlett below!

Super7 ReAction - SCARLETT!
Shanna "Scarlett" O'Hara is quite possibly the most difficult of the Eighties Ladies to represent visually in toy form. She was a regularly featured character in the G.I.Joe cartoons, so we all have a strong feeling for how she should look. But something about the final toys never looks quite right. The color blocking of her outfit is very crucial, but even moreso is the bizarre shape of her hair. In the cartoon it looked like an unformed mound of clay that changed shape from angle to angle, but simplistic designs like that are often the hardest to represent in plastic. Until this ReAction figure from Super7 I have never seen it done well. Sure, there have been decent Scarlett toys, but I always end up making a statement like "well, it's definitely a ponytailed redhead with a crossbow, but it doesn't seem like Scarlett." But now I know it can be done properly. Super7 was able to figure it out after 40 years of near-misses. And now I'm super stoked for her Ultimates figure. Let's check out ReAction Scarlett below!

Snake-Eyes Movie - SCARLETT!
I haven't watched Snake-Eyes: G.I.Joe Origins yet, but my biggest incentive to do so is to see Scarlett on screen again. It's hard to believe it's been twelve years since 2009's G.I.Joe: The Rise of Cobra was released starring Rachel Nichols as Scarlett. I like Rachel, and it was fun to get an actress so familiar to the geek genre (Alias, Star Trek, Conan, Titans, etc) in the role. But that movie was forgettable and the characters were written oddly. This time Scarlett is played by Samara Weaving (The Babysitter movies), and I'm excited to see her portrayal. But in the meantime, we can enjoy this great action figure. Hasbro's face scanning and sculpting technology gets better and better every year. While this face doesn't perfectly capture Samara's unique features, it still looks like a great real-life version of Scarlett. I was very happy to stumble across this figure in Target well in advance of her original release date. I think she's stunning. Let's check out Snake-Eyes Scarlett below!

Funko Pop - SCARLETT!
The Funko Pop Retro Toys theme is just awesome. This G.I.Joe Scarlett figure is my fourth purchase from the line (after She-Ra, Evil-Lyn, and Baroness) and I'm beyond thrilled with all of them. I was very close to ceasing my Funko collecting for various reasons, but this theme with all its perfect nostalgia has rejuvenated me. While my ideal version of every 80's character would be their animated designs, the vintage toy stylings represented here offer a different angle of childhood lore. Not bad, just different. Sure, She-Ra has a weird golden sword, Evil-Lyn is capeless and jaundiced, and this Scarlett is missing her signature ponytail. But these designs have just as much of a place in retro 80's mythos as anything else. In fact, I personally know a ton of collectors who much prefer toy designs to animation, so I'm glad Funko is catering to both audiences because I am on board for both. G.I.Joe Classified - SCARLETT (v2)!
This new wave of repainted G.I.Joe Classified figures was going to be an easy pass for me. I'm not a big fan of redecos in general, especially when it's such a minimal change. But then I randomly stopped in Walgreens for a drink when I saw this Scarlett and couldn't resist. There's something subtle about the paint apps that looks good. Her hair and skin are a touch darker, her gray parts are now black, and copper parts are brown. While not a particularly exciting change, it's noticeable. Plus I eventually want super cartoon versions, so I can rationalize that supporting these repaints will get me closer to that reality. Scarlett is pretty special to me because she was one of the first female military characters I was ever exposed to (after Hot Lips Houlihan). My father was in the military and I spent many Summers on Army bases. And from my perspective the military was a total boy's club. Seeing Scarlett kick Cobra's butt and challenge her teammates was powerful. Let's check out Scarlett v2 below!

G.I.Joe Classified - SCARLETT!
G.I.Joe plays a very integral role in my collecting hobby. A few years post-college I was overdosing on nostalgia big-time. DVDs were a relatively new advancement back then and I blew one of my first adult paychecks on a $250 Aiwa and immediately started buying old cartoons. My love of G.I. Joe was rekindled like we had never been apart. And it wasn't long until I was inspired to eBay some revenge on my gradeschool bully, Jeff. Well, I guess he wasn't so much a bully as he was a spoiled rich kid who had the Wolverine and Cover Girl and made me jealous. So, yeah, almost 20 years later I finally got myself a Cover Girl (suck on that, Jeff) and I was off to the races. Years later I have thousands of action figures and some serious compulsion problems. Yet somehow over time I had grown completely disenchanted with the G.I. Joe property and all their exclusive products. So this rebooted 6" series is is very exciting for me. Like starting fresh after a long breakup.. and my excitement is palpable. Let's check out Scarlett below!

Kre-O Blind Bag Collection G.I.JOE!
It seems like every company is trying to jump on the Lego bandwagon these days. At this point, almost all my favorite properties can be found in block-figure form (still waiting on He-Man though...). For the most part, I'm loving this trend. They don't take up much space, they're relatively cheap, they're quirky, and they come out on a more regular basis than larger-scale figures. This G.I.Joe Kre-O line is still in its infancy and hopefully we'll see some improvements as time goes on. Something about these Kreons just doesn't have the same personality as Legos, Mini-mates, Kubricks, or even MegaBloks. The tapered cheeks are an interesting departure from the typical cylinder-shaped head, but I think the final result is that the heads end up looking too small for the bodies - which kind of goes against the classic winning formula of oversized noggins on block figures. With the entire library of Hasbro properties as potential figures, the Kre-O line could be a major hit, and I certainly hope it does. Let's check out these first two figure below.

G.I.Joe Renegades SCARLETT!
G.I.Joe 30th Anniversary Wave 2011.3 - Renegades Scarlett - from Hasbro
The leading lady of the Joe's returns with her NINETEENTH(!) figure since her humble/awkward toy beginnings in 1982... and honestly she hasn't aged a day. [Check out all her previous incarnations at the go-to place for G.I.Joe info, www.yojoe.com] In case you're not aware, G.I.Joe Renegades is the newest Joe cartoon; currently being aired on The Hub. I haven't watched it yet myself, but I loved the last show (G.I.Joe Resolute), and it looks like Renegades is cut from that same cloth. While this character doesn't fully embrace an animated style, it's definitely a slight departure from the typical 30th Anniversary look. Of course, this could just be the packaging swaying my opinion, because sitting here looking at the thumbnail I just posted, she looks less stylized/cartoonish than many of her recent 30th Anniversary predecessors.
