Adore a Monster FM24v2 The Silent Shambler returns at half price

Alternative Armies is working away. From Flintloque to The Ion Age to Erin and many other ranges and scales there are new creations a plenty from our wee team. Among these projects is one ongoing which is close to our hearts; the restoration of Asgard Miniatures. A titan of the 1980’s miniatures landscape its models are one by one, range by range; returning on our website. New molding means new life from legendary masters such as Nick Bibby, Jes Goodwin, John Blanche and others.

While Asgard restoration has slowed down after Jes Goodwin’s Dwarfs and the epic undertaking of his entire massive Orc Range and we have been tending to our own 1990’s codes (see the DH Dwarven Hosts Range) there is still Asgard work going on. The first of the 2025 restored codes is ready and is here with a great Valentines Weekend Offer.  We invite you to Adore a Monster with 50% off regular price until 18th February on The Silent Shambler!

FM24v2 The Silent Shambler:  A one piece metal miniature which is 37mm tall to the top of the figure. Long arms ending in claws and a mouth full of teeth this creature never makes a sound.  Sculpted by Nick Bibby and our one painted by Studio Maxi to perfection.  It will function in 28mm scale but also 15mm and even 6mm as a monster.

Above you can see an Alternate Stars 28mm Sci-fi miniature facing off with the Silent Shambler perhaps in an alien hunt scenario?  A Dwarven Shield Maiden as well as a 15mm Elf Lancer on Horse show you its size in the fray with fantasy opponents.

The D5 Spike Tailed Dragon Lizard is 75mm long and 25mm in height and in two piece metal. Sculpted by Nick Bibby.  This was last years Love the Monster fun for Valentines Day and its 20% off too.  See all of Nick Bibby’s other restored work on the website in its own collection.

FM27v2 Half Troll Chieftain painted by The Work of Shaitan

Alternative Armies has been working steadily to restored the mighty and well remembered early 1980’s figures of the legendary British company Asgard Miniatures.  While we still have a ways to go we have returned nearly two hundred poses by Nick Bibby, Jes Goodwin, Tony Ackland, Stan Pochron as well as John Blanche and Mark Weston among others.  These are split across several ranges on the website but today we are in the Fantasy Monsters (FM) Range with a treat!

One of the most eagerly anticipated restorations (aside from the NB2 Nick Bibby Dragon) was FM27v2 Half Troll Chieftain and while Studio Maxi tackled it beautifully on our website there was another take which garnered quite a bit of attention.  We are proud to present to you the paint work of Ned Gladdis otherwise known as TheWorkOfShaitan on Instagram. Our thanks to him for this.

The brushwork on this miniature is so fine it almost looks alive with armour which would ‘ping’ if you struck it with an arrow!

Ned is in progress of completing ranks of Broo for Runequest and his FM27v2 has taken its place as its Beastlord.  Superb!

Thanks for your Time.

FM27v2 Half Troll Chieftain by Nick Bibby restored

Our last classic Asgard restored code for 2024 is one which has been asked for since we began this process five years ago. A miniature which featured in many books and had fantastic paint jobs by artists of its era. With a face only a mother could love we present the Half Orc Chieftain sculpted by Nick Bibby. Painted by Studio Maxi Costales.

FM27v2 Half Troll Chieftain:  This code contains a single metal one piece creature in armour and armed with an Axe.  it stands 35mm to the top of the head.

Added to the dedicated page of Nick Bibby Asgard Miniatures where all of his work is collected alongside two dozen others such as Trolls, monsters and more.

See also Nick Bibby’s superb Dragon Lizards as well for some really unique foes on the table.

We will continue to restore more Asgard in 2025 with the remaining FM codes and then a beginning on the remaining Collector Sets as we have already completed the 28mm Science Fiction as well as Space Marines and the (warning graphic content) adult themed Torture Chamber Range too. A huge undertaking in which it has been very heartening to continue to receive messages of good will and enjoyment from those who wanted to add to their 80’s collection or who were too young first time around.

FM65 Flying Reptile with Wraith by Nick Bibby restored

Now returned to the world into the classic 1980’s Asgard Fantasy Monsters Range a requested code to lead your Undead Army.

FM65 Flying Reptile with Wraith:  This is a metal kit containing a Creature and a Rider.  The beast is in three pieces being body and two wings while the rider is one piece.  28mm scale and when assembled this model is 50mm tall and 80mm long.  You can choose from the pack (kit) or the beast only or the rider only on the page.  Many different Human sized riders will fit the beast. Sculpted by Nick Bibby now remastered.

Studio Maxi Costales has done a fantastic job painting the entire range of Jes Goodwin’s Orcs and the thus far restored Dungeon Adventurers Range too.  He has painted the FM47 Wraith above which is back as well as the FM65 Flying Reptile.  Excellent!

Thanks for your Time.

FM74v2 Water Elemental remastered 1980s release from Asgard Miniatures

"The undines are troublesome things from the smallest who froth the ale in your tankard to the greatest which can overturn a hundred oar galley with ease. Mages claim control of them but I am not so sure. Things so strange to us of flesh and bone; who knows how their briny minds work. As it is many of my men have salt worked into their armour from encounters. Water Elementals...drown them all!"

Now remastered and added to the now nearly complete Fantasy Monsters (FM) Range by Asgard Miniatures is the second version of the FM74 Water Elemental which joins all manner of creatures, undead, animals and oddities of some 60 poses.

This any scale metal one piece creature stands 45mm tall to the top of its head. Decorated with coral, rope and seaweed it wields a spear and a net. Our example painted by talented Studio Maxi with a sculpted sea base (40mm square). Supplied unpainted and without a base. Shown with a 28mm scale Jes Goodwin Orc and a 15mm knight from the Tabletop 15mm Fantasy Range

We like to give our customers a treat so there is always something free in every package shipped out by us here in Scotland. Until July 8th it is part one of our Devilish Imps; four any scale miniatures. Read about this in the ARTICLE. No catch..totally free in orders.

Elves Pt1 by Nick Bibby in 1980s Asgard range restore Dungeon Adventurers

The reviving of Asgard and Tabletop Miniatures ranges is ongoing and with the recent start of the Dungeon Adventurers Range being re-released (a dozen Dwarfs by Nick Bibby, Jes Goodwin and Steve Trickett already) we now have part one of the Elves. Part two of the Elves will follow in a few weeks time (not quite ready yet) but for now five metal 28mm miniatures.

First created and sold in the early 1980’s, sculpted by legends of the time these miniatures are the natural foes of the Fantasy Monster Range and allies or enemies of the Creatures of Chaos or Jes Goodwin Orcs

This very large range contained some ninety poses all in and it is our intent to bring these back to you in groups across time. We are now up to seventeen poses. All the miniatures were painted by the talented Studio Maxi and while shown here in a group they are all as singles on the website. Here are the codes:

DA11 Elf Magic-user
DA12 Elf in Plate-mail
DA14 Half Elf
DA15 Wood Elf Adventurer
DA16 Wood Elf Adventuress

Sometimes the small touches make a miniature or a diorama base and you may have noticed FM67 Large Frog (by Nick Bibby) among the Elves above. This is a delightful miniature ideal for fantasy.

Fantasy Warlord. Restored high fantasy range from the 1990’s now with new pictures of 21000 Elven Hero. Painted by Studio Maxi. All Fantasy Warlord Characters come with separate weapons. There are infantry packs, weapon sprues and more in the range.

Thank you for reading and for your continued support is keeping the golden age of British Wargaming alive and the metal flowing as it should.

We like to give our customers a treat so there is always something free in every package shipped out by us here in Scotland.  Until July 8th it is part one of our Devilish Imps; four any scale miniatures.  Read about this on our BLOG.  No catch..totally free in orders.

Dungeon Adventurers 1980’s range restore begins with Dwarfs by Bibby and Goodwin

Those who have been following Alternative Armies for the last seven years or so will know that we are intent on reviving as much of the classic Asgard and Tabletop ranges that we can.  First created and sold in the early 1980’s and sculpted by legends such as Nick Bibby and Jes Goodwin the time has come for the start of the Dungeon Adventurers Range to be restored into production. The natural foes of the Fantasy Monster Range and allies or enemies of the Creatures of Chaos or the Jes Goodwin Asgard Orcs this range covers Dwarfs, Gnomes, Elves, Halflings, Humans and much more.

This very large range contains some ninety poses all in and it is our intent to bring these to you in groups across time.  We begin now.  All the miniatures were painted by the talented Studio Maxi and while shown here in a group they are all as singles on the website.  Here are the codes:

DA1 Dwarf Thief

DA1a Dwarf Fighter

DA2 Dwarf in Platemail

DA3 Dwarf Lord

DA4 Dwarf Cleric

(by Nick Bibby)

DA5 Dwarf Shieldbearer

DA6 Dwarf Crossbowman

DA7v1 Dwarf King

DA8 Dwarf Adventurer

DA9 Dwarf Adventuress

DA10 Dwarf Trader

(by Jes Goodwin)

                                                                   DA7v2 Dwarf King

                                                                   (by Steve Trickett)

Above you can see a couple of these Dungeon Adventurers range Dwarfs alongside the Jes Goodwin 1985 Dwarfs and they work well together.  Codes DA1 to DA4 are larger and DA5 to DA10 are a bit smaller.

Until 10th June 2024 the classic Asgard F6 Large Rat is free automatically in all shipped packages (see it above alongside FM77 Medium Rat which is half price in our Deals and Offers page).  Tunnel fighting beckons!

There is a direct tie in between the Dungeon Adventurers Range in 28mm scale and the Tabletop Games 15mm Fantasy Range with many of the characters mirrored in the smaller scale.

Thank you for reading and for your continued support is keeping the golden age of British Wargaming alive some forty years later.

NB1 Barbarian by Nick Bibby returns 54mm scale masterpiece..with free new weapons

What is good in life...to collect and paint miniatures and to see them arrayed before you. Tis true! This then is the most fitting thing to be Alternative Armies final release of 2023 and the final release of the Winter Mega Event’s 80 new and restored codes.  Now in the Asgard 1980’s array is a one off 54mm scale Barbarian figurine by Nick Bibby.  A really special piece on a bigger scale.

In addition to the restored Barbarian we have four new weapons in that scale sculpted this year by Sam Croes our lead designer which we are putting in with the Barbarian for free.  You can get them on their own as a pack or singles if you desire too.

NB1 The Barbarian:  A metal 54mm scale figurine supplied in four pieces (barbarian, base, sword, scabbard) supplied unpainted and unassembled. Dating from 1982 and not in production for many years we are delighted to see it return.  Supplied with NB1W a set of four new weapons for free giving you options for arming and outfitting your barbarian.

NB1W Barbarian Weapons Set:  Newly created in 2023 in 54mm scale four metal weapons suitable for NB1 The Barbarian (or any large 28mm scale creature or giant).  The four are a dagger, a Great Axe, a Scimitar and a Mace.  Choose from the set or singles.

We have no other 54mm scale codes and it is not likely we will get any more but we have a number of BIG models in our ranges which would look grand on your gaming table.  There is Jigoku the Giant Oni in the Kitton Range, the GNATS giant mecha in the HOF 15mm Sci-fi Range, the Wyvern Kildane in our Monsters Range and of course Durzum the Giant Troll in the Orc and Goblin Range.  All of these are 100mm or more tall.

Creatures of Chaos range returns Asgard 80’s Fantasy by Bibby, Blanche and Goodwin

Not often is it possible to return to the world something wonderful in its complete form but this is such a day. In 1982 Asgard Miniatures released the Creatures of Chaos Range sculpted by Nick Bibby, Jez Goodwin and John Blanche.  It is now on its own page of the restored Asgard drop down menu of the website.  Our set was painted by the talented Studio Maxi Costales bringing them to life.

Nine different...very different...miniatures as singles or as a value set of all nine of them with a saving.

CC0 Creatures of Chaos Set (9 Miniatures with a Saving)

CC1 Running Hornhead  (35mm total height)

CC2 Many Armed Skulker (30mm total height)

CC3 Hawk Footed Stabber (40mm total height)

CC4 Hoofer Bladesman (30mm total height)

CC5 Crabclaw (40mm total height)

CC6 Trunkhand Tuskoid  (40mm total height)

CC7 Four Fang (35mm height, 45mm long)

CC8 Hideous Octopoid (28mm total height)

CC9 Crested Weremonkey (23mm total height comes with separate wings)

Sculpted by Nick Bibby except for CC6 by John Blanche and CC7 by Jez Goodwin he of The Barbarians Range.

A majestic (and also the largest single piece metal miniature we produce) often listed alongside the Creatures of Chaos figures is the D6 Dragon Lizard Juggernaut by Nick Bibby.  A real centre piece for an army it is 110mm long.

A source of real price for Alternative Armies was the restoration of NB2 Dragon which was issued initially as a 200 only limited run of boxed metal models (over half a kilo of metal).  We have a couple of these limited kits on site.  This famous Dragon is now a resin kit at a much lower price and an easier build...plus a lot, lot lighter.

15mm Human Adventurers classic 1980s by Tabletop Miniatures renewed

Alongside historical month at Alternative Armies this September we also undertook a remolding of the classic Humans in the Tabletop Fantasy Range. These popular figures get you into 15mm skirmishing or dungeon crawl or anything else with singles (within the packs), packs and a value skirmish set of all of them.

These true scale 15mm (they match up perfectly with Laserburn and with our Dark Age and Medieval ranges) miniatures are 1.5cm to top of head for an average person in miniature.

You can see these adventurers in combat with the FM76 Dragon Newt by Nick Bibby which works in any scale. Wizard, Mage, Paladin, Cleric, Thief, Assassin, Bard, Fighters and female versions of some of those too.

These Humans sit atop of steadily returning Tabletop Fantasy Range of codes which include various monsters and beasts as well as really unusual miniatures such as F34 Winged Fiend which is a great foe.
