Another Cold Dawn a Free Flintloque Scenario

Part two of the World of Valon articles to enjoy.  Following the recent release of the 55524 Skeletov Cossacks we present a full size free Flintloque scenario which sees them face off against Elf Dragoons in a snowy cavalry action. See and download here or head for the Free Downloads page for everything there is to have.  You will need the free Uniformation article for the Skeletov Cossacks for this scenario.

Weak rays.  Always weak.  The sun here took the seemingly endless ink of night away in this accursed land but it never made it truly day. Not the day of Armorica where the grass was lush and green.  Where the maidens danced with flowers in their hair and smiled at dashing young officers about to make a name for themselves fighting the savage races.

“Captain.  I think we are about to have some company. Riders a league off.”

Captain Pierre Sanson of the 22nd Line Dragoons was dragged from his memories and pleasures once known back into the now.  The now which had his beard coated in frost and the metal of his helmet able to remove the skin from unprotected hands. Reaching down to pat the neck of his horse he felt the animal shivering despite its thick blankets and saddle fittings. He cooed it and soothed it. This campaign had been the worst any Elf had ever seen; worse than the sands of Aegpyt.

He knew it was the enemy before he gazed into the distance and it was.  It was no mortal cavalry.  The horses were nothing but bones animated by some Wylde Magicke unknown in civilised Urop and their riders the same. Leering skulls with bright blue sashes and caps. Wicked swords raised in silent challenge....

Selene and Hypnus Portable Weapons of the Khanate

Taken from Academy Auto Trainer Series 66 produced on New Glastonbury in 4337IC in the aftermath of the Return of the Khanate.

The first encounters with infantry support grade weapon platforms came with the initial break out from the Belkus Depression by those Shia Khan forces which had followed the digging machines.  Though a watch was kept on the edges of the crater, which has once been the famed passages of the labyrinth, by planetary defence platoons they were rapidly overwhelmed by the aliens which poured out into the sunlight.  The digging machines had no more than cleared their drive sections of the soft dirt and Legionaries as well as accursed Maligs followed them.  Being some distance off due to the background radiation left over by the detonation of the fusion core the defence troopers had time to made transmissions back to Pelacan city to inform and then call for reinforcements.  What was not expected from vids and audio from the gateway chamber was the immediate reach the enemy had.  It was the first encounter with code name Selene and code name Hypnus portable weapon platforms.

Floating forwards at a steady pace with two alien operators running alongside each of them the Selene platforms opened fire first upon elements of the 3rd Pelacan Regiment at a range beyond their ability to strike back.  A barrage of 20mm cannon shells and laser beams were followed by the shrieking rage of 12.7mm rounds by the thousand and it killed many of the troopers who were unable to find thick enough cover.  It was however once the aliens drew closer and the troopers loosed off anvil rounds and bursts of grenades from their Moth type 12's that the other Khanate platforms entered the fray.  The Hypnus have a single operator who seems to be bonded to the weapon platform by a chair behind a thick gun shield.  The weapons carried by the Hypnus are dangerous in their own right giving off in many cases a degree of radiation or gene potential damage.  Atomic Destabilisers and Triple Plasma mounts tore through Aketon armour and the hulls of a half dozen Steornede Battlesuits at close range with ease.  This led to the loss of the craters edge and marked the start of the remorseless advance of the aliens.  Portable weapon platforms have proven tough to deal with without armoured support and the Khanate makes great use of them especially in urban areas to hold taken junctions and structures.

There are six primary kinds of Portable Weapon used by the Shia Khan Empire in support of its Legions. The Selene is more plentiful and has been observed with Legionary Gunners as well as Maligs and even Betrayers.

“During the ancient Ban of Prejudice the Espaten was a powerful tool for support in the street fights which raged in underground cities across the Precinct.  In recent years the original gun has been present in all campaigns and it has been broadened as well.  To deal with Battlesuits and larger infantry formations as well as indirect fire missions there are now six variants.  These are  the same weapon systems as used by the new Havelock Type 57 being rolled out to Muster Regiments right now.”  Academy Auto-Trainer Series 07, New Glastonbury, 4325IC

The Prydian Army as well as the Marcher Barons and Condot Companies have an array of Portable Weapons to support their troops.

The Demon Drink a Barrel of Booze in Flintloque and Slaughterloo

As requested by fans of the World of Valon a playtest rules article containing rules for using 59547 Barrel of Bottles from our 28mm Terrain Range in your games of Flintloque and Slaughterlo.

These rules can be used in play with all players agreement.  Enjoy and we welcome any questions to sales@alternative-armies.com and we are happy to help.

(54050 Valon Civilians protecting the drinks...)

Keeping the discipline of an army on the march is a hard task indeed, and few aspects of keeping discipline are as challenging as the lure of alcohol. Soldiers of all kinds love to drink, the ‘demon drinke’ as the Joccian’s call it (and they imbibe more than most!) and ensuring that these soldiers arrive for a fight sober is not easy. The constant threat of death, injury and receiving pay that is often worse than that given to an Otharmann galley slave makes the attraction of booze all the stronger.

For Flintloque the following game mechanics:

‘Woz that? I smell’s juniyper!’

You can place the barrel of bottles into any scenario you wish in any setting from the Witchlands to Catalucia to the streets of Londinium.  You may place more than one barrel if you want but ensure no barrel is within 30cm of any other.  Place the first barrel on a road as if it has fallen from a cart or at the wall of an inn or somewhere that makes sense; even in the woods as it might be a secret stash!

During play any mortal character who comes within 5cm of the Barrel of Bottles can choose to drink something from it.  This is in the case of characters who are Elite or Regular or higher experience level.  Raw characters and Civilian characters will automatically choose to drink.  Othari characters will not take a drink.  The Undead will not but Vampyres may if they near.

The effects of a random bottle are not always for the bad.  They could be good or they could be useful.  It takes one action to try a bottle and then make a D10 roll for its contents and effect.

0 – It is pure firewater!  The character spits it out but the bottle can be used as a Fyre Grenade in play.

1-2 It is cordial water.  The character drinks and it tastes just fine but does nothing else.

3-6 It is the Demon Drink.  The character rolls a D10 on an odd result they drink deep, on evens they do not.

7-9 It is Good Stuff.  A fortifying remedy.  The character is refreshed.

If it is Firewater then it cannot be drunk but can be lit and thrown which is very useful in the Witchlands.  See the game books for Grenade rules.  Cordial Water is safe to drink but does nothing at all though if you choose it might be valuable in a hot climate.  The Demon Drink on a result of drinking deep means the character is enfeebled by booze for rest of the scenario.  They lose 20% of their movement rates and suffer a -3 to Melee Combat and -20% accuracy on all shooting and they may not aim.  The Good Stuff is a tonic possibly slightly Magicke in its making.  The character chooses one of the following boons which lasts for the rest of the scenario.  +10% Accuracy on all shooting or +10% to Movement Rates or +1 to Discipline.

A character may spend as many actions on drinking bottles as they wish BUT.  They may not pass a bottle to another and they may not take any bonus more than once and if they get a Demon Drink enfeeblement result TWICE they are then rendered unconscious for the rest of the scenario and fall where they stand.

(Todoroni of Nepolise are fine diners and use their servants to eat well even on campaign)

For Slaughterloo the barrel of bottles is more of a temptation or a treat for a lucky or unlucky unit on the battlefield.  The barrel is placed on the battlefield in a suitable place as with Flintloque on a road or near a building or where it makes sense to the player.  It is recommended only one barrel per game but you can have several if players agree.

The following game mechanics do not apply to Undead units or Othari units.  All other units which are on foot and not artillery (not cavalry) will act upon the barrel if their movement action takes their edge within 10cm of the barrel.  When this happens the barrel is moved into the ranks of that unit and a D6 roll is made upon the unit’s activation for the next three turns.

1 to 3 – Demon Drink!  The unit loses its free (no form roll) action for this activation.

4 It’s Bloody Water! No effect on the unit.

5-6 – Joyous Tonic!  The unit gains one additional free (no form roll) action for this activation.

‘Only a Drop, sir, honest...hic!’

You can use any model to represent the barrel of bottles on your table such as 59531 Beer Barrel Barricade or 59523 Abandoned Beer Wagon for instance.

Lastly for a wee bit of fun.  What are the favourite tipples of the Races of Valon?

Real Ale: Orcs, Bog Orc, Hob-Goblin, Ogre, Trolka.

Lager / Beer: Dwarves, Dog, Gnome, Goblin, Rats, Trollkin.

Cider: Orcs, Ogres, Rats, Hob-Goblin, Bog Orc, Mountain Elf, Wild Elf.

Cheap Wines: Dark Elf, Goblin, Rabbits, Todoroni, Werewolf.

Expensive Wines: Everyone. Especially Ferach Elves.

Spirits: Ferach Elf, Dark Elf, Centaurs, Orcs, Rats, Dwarves, Todoroni, Dog, Trolka.

KEFALOS TRADE GUILD

When humanity first left Earth, guilds had been around for four millennia. By then they had fallen out of favour, but as humanity started to spread through the galaxy, guilds became popular once more. By banding together in guilds, resources could be pooled, more could be achieved, and members could find sources of co-operation and connections in systems far from home.

Some guilds are singular, like the Star Charters' Guild, while others can be found in multiple iterations, like the Trade Guilds. The older Trade Guilds mainly focus on logistics and brokering multilateral deals, seeing to it that the flow of goods never breaks down. Their fees are low, but with the enormous amount of deals being handled, they will still amount to massive gains.

While many Trade Guilds are peaceful, some are quite ruthless. They are constantly looking for newly colonized systems where they can force bad deals on colonists in need. In return they get the rights to natural resources, indentured servants, or the right to plunder any ancient ruins on the colony world. They do not care if their resource extraction creates environmental catastrophes, and if quotas are not met, they come to get it in force... The Kefalos Trade Guild is one of the most ruthless guilds, which has driven their business to the absolute fringe of the galaxy. They have recently been spotted on Golgotha Prime, and rumour has it that they are involved in some shady business...

MISSION BRIEFING

"Do not point that thing on me!"

"Hey, do not point that thing on me squidface!"

"Easy now, easy now... Would you please both lower your weapons?", Vorpal Dink asked. "I think that these aquatic fellows need our help to get something back which is theirs".

"Lower your weapon, Hruk. Mister Dink and his associates are to help us bring back the Seer stones that Kefalos Trade Guild stole from us. We have found out that they are to deliver them to a secret site here on Golgotha Prime."

"We have mapped their previous flight routes to the facility. It's always good to know what the Kefalos are up to", Captain Biro interjected. "Anyway, they are quite predictable in their movements. There is a specific point where we can station one of us with an EMP missile launcher. It should bring the craft down without damaging the cargo."

"The EMP blast ought to disable the craft's tracking signal, which should give us time enough to get the stones and get out", Dink added.

"It ought to", Hruk replied. "But let's be prepared if it doesn't."

"Yes, let's be prepared", Captain Biro agreed.

BATTLE OVER THE SEER STONES

"You said you had a plan. You said you could bring down their craft softly. You said we could get our Seer stones!"

"The EMP blast did bring it down softly."

"But we haven't found the craft yet! How do you know that the Trade Guild hasn't tracked it down?"

"Because we have ears listening in on Guild communications, and the chatter on the comms tell us that they are still searching. Now, look what we have here!"

"The craft! And inside ...the Seer stones!"

"Excellent, let's get out of here before ...what's that sound?"

The jungle had fallen silent, except for a rhythmic thudding and the whirr of servos. Suddenly an automated voice boomed.

"SCAVENGERS, STEP AWAY FROM THE CRAFT! KEFALOS TRADE GUILD IS HERE TO BRING THE CONTENT TO ITS RIGHTFUL OWNERS!"

"Thank you, but the stones are with their rightful owners now."

"NEGATIVE! YOU ARE NOT NEODYNE SECRET RESEARCH FACILITY! RETURN THE STOLEN GOODS OR FACE OUR WRATH! YOU HAVE TEN SECONDS TO COMPLY!"

Captain Biro sighed and unholstered his beam pistol.  "Here we go..."

K0NG Mech Suit

Originally created to haul heavy goods in hostile environments, the K0NG Mech Suit has seen a lot of use on the galactic frontier. Most of the newer models have forgone the use of mech pilots, opting for an onboard AI instead, but the option to use it as a mech suit is still there.

With its enormous strength and durability, the Kefalos Trade Guild prefer to bring K0NG Mech Suits when they are to collect outstanding debt or unfilled quotas. The K0NGs are intimidating and able to forcefully haul away whatever cargo the guild deems appropriate to take as compensation.

Should anyone still pick a fight with the Trade Guild, the K0NGs massive strength, heavy armour (and the retrofitted, shoulder-mounted Hyper Blaster) will tip the odds in the Trade Guild's favour...

Trade Master Ko-In Zedel and M1-K Bot

Known for his utter ruthlessness and the trail of destruction that he and his retinue has left along the colonies on the galactic fringe, Trade Master Ko-In Zedel has piqued the interest of many parties with his arrival on Golgotha Prime. Ostensibly Zedel has come to establish a Kefalos Trade Guild outpost, but vile rumours about more nefarious motives follow him...

Something else follows him as well: his M1-K Bot. Modelled after a terrestrial simian, the M1-K scampers around its master, fetching things, acting like a pet. The M1-K's AI seems severely limited, often failing with even the simplest tasks in front of whomever Zedel is meeting. But this is all a ruse. Under the official AI, there is another, much more potent hiding.

When invited as a guest, Ko-In Zedel always bring the M1-K. When they are alone, the bot is sent out to map the facility, spy on its inhabitants, slice computer systems and bring the data back to Zedel. The bot is extremely quick and nimble, able to move through vents, dodge security systems and guards. Should it be discovered, it can deploy the energy weapon hidden in its tail, which can either fire deadly bolts of energy, or be used to stun the enemies in close combat.

Should a target need to be eliminated, a toxin pack can be installed in the M1-K's tail. Sneaking up on the unsuspecting victim, the M1-K can deliver untraceable and delayable toxins, which make the death seem natural. But as potent as the M1-K is, Zedel is using it sparingly, so it doesn't get discovered for what it actually is...

(Post Apoc Warriors from the HOF Range)

SCAVENGERS AND A FAILED COLONY

Sometimes the worst things happen. The colony fails. The experimental reactor explodes spectacularly. The world gets invaded by hostile forces.

The tech archaeologists release unspeakable horrors from forgotten vaults.

But humans exhibit an extreme survival instinct, and as long as a smaller group survives even a 'lost world' can harbour human life perpetually.

Sometimes the survivors can reclaim most of what was lost, other times the world regresses to a lower level of technology which can be sustained on its own.

Sometimes, there is nothing to reclaim, the former colony is wiped out, or the hostile invaders drive the survivors into the wild.

That's when humans usually return to their origins. In ancient times, humans were hunters and gatherers.

In the ruins, they tend to turn into raiders or scavengers, either fighting and stealing to survive, or sifting through wreckage and ruins for usable things.

Bands of scavengers and raiders have been sighted in the Badlands of Golgotha Prime.

While some kind of cataclysmic event wiped out everyone from the first colonization millennia ago, rumours speak of the loss of an enormous colony ship during the first modern colonization attempt of Golgotha Prime.

Supposedly the remains of that ship can be found in the Badlands, but its exact position is only known by a group of raiders calling themselves "Children of Thunder".

As a rite of passage, anyone joining the Children of Thunder must travel to the wreckage of the colonization ship, traverse the labyrinthine corridors and reach the reactor, where they shall submerge their heads in coolant.

The stories say that they gain mystic powers after this, but the only thing that has ever been confirmed is that they all gain electric blue hair...

---

For those interested the game system used in the scenarios here was Five Parsecs from Home by Ivan Sorensen of Nordic Weasel Games.

There will be another article from @golgothaprime about his love of 15mm gaming and his table and this will come in the new year of 2024!

UMS04 Diamyo Dodging cyberpunk starter set released

New release!  The fourth complete little USEME starter set of booklet, sheets, miniatures, bases, dice with a saving baked in.  Joining UMS01 Danger on Outpost 32 (Grey Aliens vs Humans), UMS02 Ziggurat of Clem IV (Octopods vs Zidhe) and UMS03 Compound Interest (Cultists vs Post Apoc Warriors) we have a cyberpunk entry which sees Corporate Ashigaru facing up against the militarised police of Security Force Alpha.  See the new and these plus all sixteen of the USEME titles in print and digital download on the WEBSITE.

“The Wandsworth Zone is a part of Neo-London where few go willingly and fewer still survive any length of time there. During the uprising of ‘39 several biophage and radsick weapons were deployed and the zone is now a low toxic rubble strewn mess. In other words a perfect place to hide out and to hide things in. This was the case for Akaro Tamahachi Cyber Diamyo of the Lotus Free Lance ronin corporation.

During an aggressive take over what was left of the Lotus Free Lance fled the Tokyo Yokahama Combine for new lands. Opportunity abounds in Neo-London but there is a problem which Tamahatchi must deal with. His past. Due to the efforts of Cyber Assassin ‘Kitty’ Nagamo who very nearly managed to kill the Diamyo the authorities are now on the trail of the Lotus Free Lance. While Kitty has not travelled around the world to join the Police effort to deal with the new criminals she has revealed his past into the net and now its a race to see who gets to it first. The Lotus Free have installed themselves in the Wandsworth Zone and know that the militarised Metropolitan Police are on their way.

There is a hard point data terminal which contains Tamahatchi’s past wrong doings to which access must be blocked. The lair newly set up by the Lotus Free might be found and an escape carried out. Lastly one of the few still operating trains in the Zone will be highjacked before crashing and a final showdown undertaken. All under a sky riddled with data corruption and endless fog and rain. Now is the time for action!"
