F23 Wyvern 15mm Tabletop monster restored

A lesser Dragon the Wyvern has no arms and seldom breathes fire.  It is a flying snake with a bite of death.  This monster is common on Fantasy Battlefields and we are delighted to present back to the world a classic.  The 1980’s 15mm scale Tabletop Miniatures F23 Wyvern model. Now on the website.

F23 Wyvern:  A three piece metal miniature.  Body with separate wings.  It is 90mm total length and has an 80mm wing span when assembled.  Shown below alongside 501 Human Wizard and F24 Seven Headed Hydra to demonstrate its size.

This creature joins all of the other restored monsters and beasts in the Tabletop Miniatures 15mm Fantasy Range including Dragons and Arch Demon.

If you like fantasy skirmish in 15mm scale this range has several super value packs of Human and Dwarf adventurers with many poses (they are as singles in their pack codes too).

Have you seen VNT33 Wyvern Kildane in our 28mm Monsters Range?  This much larger take on a Wyvern comes with a free Human Knight and has a 200mm wing span!

Every miniature in the Tabletop Miniatures Fantasy Range is either a single or a pack (within which you can select singles) or a value saver set. There are many monsters such as the Stone Giant and Rhinosaurs which go well with the Dwarves, Lizardmen and Undead in the range.

F22 Black Dragon: This metal 15mm scale monster is made up of three parts (body and wings) and when built is 70mm in total length and 80mm wide to tips of wings. Supplied without a base (shown on a HOTT Base for Dragons) and unassembled.

Giant Slugs! With posable eye stalks and great for any scale of gaming the 549 Giant Slug can be had as a single, a pack or a twenty strong value set. Slimy and super generic foes for your dungeon crawls and forest encounters.

F24 Seven Headed Hydra 15mm Tabletop monster restored

Since about 700BC renderings in stone, clay, wood and other mediums have been made of the Hydra of Lerna as defeated by Hercules.  This monster is part of popular culture and thus there are many visions of it in miniature too.  We are delighted to present back to the world the classic 1980’s 15mm scale Tabletop Miniatures metal Hydra.  Now on the website.

F24 Seven Headed Hydra:  An Eight piece metal miniature.  The body plus seven heads with necks to mount upon it.  You can pose the necks as you wish.  Stands 25mm tall as well as 80mm long when assembled.  Shown next to a 15mm miniature for scale only.

Have you seen our HOT35 Giant Hydra in the HOT 15mm Fantasy Range?  A very different and larger take on this mythical monster.

F21 Red Dragon 15mm Tabletop restored

Following up on the restored Dragons last week we have just one more this month to make three and its a cracking 1980’s remaster of a long gone but now back model in the 15mm Tabletop Fantasy Range

Makes us think of brave Wales with the Red Dragon. There are other 15mm monsters in this range currently being restored alongside a dozen monsters already placed there such as the Rhinosaur, Balrog and Fire Giant.

In metal and three pieces it is a fine addition to your fire breathers. F21 Red Dragon was a tricky restoration but it has been done well and has been asked for by several long term collectors. It is 80mm in length and 80mm wide plus 40mm tall.

Stood next to the Dwarf King from HOT1 Dwarf Command in 15mm scale and alongside FM62R Giant Tick which is FREE in every order shipped out automatically until 5th March 2024

We recently remolded the excellent Asgard and Tabletop Human Adventurers as packs, singles and value skirmish sets with a saving. Great for dungeon crawl and many other uses and including Wizards, Warriors, Barbarians, Pack Mule and more.

This is our last 15mm scale Fantasy release of the month. Thank you for your time.

15mm Human Adventurers classic 1980s by Tabletop Miniatures renewed

Alongside historical month at Alternative Armies this September we also undertook a remolding of the classic Humans in the Tabletop Fantasy Range. These popular figures get you into 15mm skirmishing or dungeon crawl or anything else with singles (within the packs), packs and a value skirmish set of all of them.

These true scale 15mm (they match up perfectly with Laserburn and with our Dark Age and Medieval ranges) miniatures are 1.5cm to top of head for an average person in miniature.

You can see these adventurers in combat with the FM76 Dragon Newt by Nick Bibby which works in any scale. Wizard, Mage, Paladin, Cleric, Thief, Assassin, Bard, Fighters and female versions of some of those too.

These Humans sit atop of steadily returning Tabletop Fantasy Range of codes which include various monsters and beasts as well as really unusual miniatures such as F34 Winged Fiend which is a great foe.

D6 Dragon Lizard Juggernaut by Nick Bibby restored and released

Sometimes you get the chance to restore a piece of wargame miniature history and the first of two this spring has now arrived.  One of the finest and largest single piece castings of the 1980's has returned.  The D6 Dragon Lizard Juggernaut and we have even restored the sword which it can hold in its claw!  Find it along with the other Fantasy Asgard miniatures on the website and in the new Nick Bibby Asgard Miniatures page where is work is collected.

At 110mm long and 50mm tall this model is imposing and works well in any scale which you can see in the 15mm and 28mm next to picture.  Shown is BP1 Sternbow one of Jez Goodwin's Barbarians and also MDA38 Illusionist from the Tabletop 15mm Fantasy Range.

The level of detail on this miniature is simply superb.  Here is the Juggernaut from all angles.  It is tough to get it all in one picture!

Cast in high quality metal it looks as good as it first did upon release in 1982.  It joins the now over eighty restored miniatures from Asgard.

We will have news on the other promised even mightier legendary Asgard restoration end of this month.  Keep an eye out and watch the skies.

Asgard FM Fantasy Range 1980s returns fourth round pt1

We are catching up with the end of the Summer Mega Event and thus while we are we wanted to give you some 'new' things to look at.  A large group of Asgard dawn of the 1980's models have been restored and are coming out in September.  They are all from the Fantasy Monster (FM) range and take us up beyond the fortieth miniature.  All of this big group of restored, remastered releases for the month are on the site now but we will release the pictures and news in three parts; this being the first. We have worked hard to allow tabletop gamers, collectors and Asgard fans the chance to have these miniatures once more.

In this news we show to you five monsters mixed of snakes and trolls.  Each miniature is shown in a series of pictures and angles with a total height listed to help you know their size. Total height is from sole of foot to top of highest part of the figure. In the case of long creatures a total length is given the same way.

FM25 Giant Snake (50mm long)

FM30 V2 Half Troll with Sword (27mm tall)

FM35 Hill Troll (35mm tall)

FM36 Were Snake (30mm tall)

FM41 Mountain Troll (50mm tall)

Great for any game system and some really novel looking ideas for creatures.

The Guild Room range is where we have put all of the thus far restored 1980's Tabletop and Asgard scenic miniatures and characters.  For example above is the great WW1 Wizard on Throne Set which can be had as a pack or parts from it on its page.  This goes along with magic mirrors, potion bottles, skull candle holders and much more.

Thanks for your Time.

Asgard FM Fantasy Range 1980s returns second round

Alternative Armies is delighted to restore to the world a range which inspired so many which followed it. At the dawn of the 1980's Asgard Miniatures began their Fantasy Monsters (FM) range. We have worked hard to allow tabletop gamers, collectors and Asgard fans the chance to have these miniatures once more.

The second round of releases is here. Consisting of ten codes from FM10 to FM20 which are fantasy monsters with some version 1 and version 2 as well as the Sacrificial Tree and first Undead of the range. These join the first dozen codes on the Tabletop Games and Asgard Fantasy Range page.

FM10 Giant Bat

FM11 Salamander V1
FM11 Salamander V2

FM12 Cockatrice V1
FM14 Spectre

FM15 Minotaur V1
FM15 Minotaur V2

FM16 Unicorn
FM17 Basilisk
FM18 Skeleton Warrior

FM20 Sacrificial Tree
FM20a Victim for Sacrificial Tree

Each miniature is shown in a series of pictures and angles with a total height listed to help you know their size. Total height is from sole of foot to top of highest part of the figure. In the case of long creatures a total length is given the same way.

The Sacrificial Tree with or without Victim is a code we were asked a lot about. Part of the FM range we have also placed it in the Torture Chamber Range as its nature suits that too. A great piece for your table.

The Barbarians of the Wilds some of the finest character miniatures of the 1980's as singles and a value set. Sculpted by Jez Goodwin.

Alongside the other collections we have restored there is the Tabletop Games and Asgard Miniatures Science Fiction Range which contains many aliens, robots, creatures as well as the mighty TSF01 Szithk War Bird pictured. Great in any game system and collectors.

We hope you enjoy our efforts to keep such wonderful classics in production and we are continuing with this project and each time we get further codes online we will let you know.

Thanks for your Time.

Dark Elf 15mm custom Army for HOTT by Brendon Burnett

An enduring and favoured set of miniature tabletop gaming rules comes in the form of HOTT 2nd edition.  'Hordes of the Things' is generic and allows you to construct an army of 'points' from a list of troop 'types' with different sizes of 40mm frontage element bases.  Taken from our own HOT 15mm Fantasy Range and from the Tabletop Games 15mm Fantasy Range we have an array of ready made HOTT 2nd Edition 24AP Armies which include free bases.  Brendon Burnett over in Australia has kindly given us permission to show off his custom Dark Elf expanded Army made up from our miniatures as well as its composition list.  Over to you sir!

This dark host is composed of Dark Elves, lesser demons, the living dead, and all manner of slithering, swooping, creeping, crawling things.

Dark Elves of the Doomwood HOTT (30pts)

• Tree of Pain (Stronghold)

• Witch on Fell Beast (Aerial Hero)

• Ensorcelled Revenants (Skeleton Hordes)

• Doomknights (Knight)

• Executioners (Blades)

• Splintershards (Shooters)

• Thief (Sneaker)

• Naga (Beasts)

• Gargoyles (Flyer)

• Spiderlings (Lurkers)

• Spider Queen (Behemoth)

Ever since I was young, I really enjoyed hobby miniatures. My Dad, my two older brothers and I would spend hours putting figurines together and playing games. Now, almost twenty years later, we’re all still bond over miniatures.

My favourite genre of hobby miniatures is high fantasy. I took an interest in 15mm figures by rediscovering Hordes of the Things (2nd ed) (HOTT) tabletop battle game. For this, I am really impressed by the quality and detail of figurines in Alternative Armies HOTT 2nd. Ed. Armies, especially the army pack deals or HOT Fantasy Range under the 15mm Fantasy ranges tab on the left-hand side. All of the figures you see – except the tree Stronghold in the background – are from the Alternative Armies range. HOTT can be played in a range of scales. But I reckon 15mm lets you to build whole armies quickly at a fast pace but with beautiful detail.

I personally always liked the concept of Dark Elves: once proud and noble creatures that have become bitter and twisted by miserable histories and fell sorceries. Living in shadowy forests, or on lifeless mountains peaks, they depend on all manner of dark pacts and uneasy alliances to survive their bitter existence.

Two regiments of crossbows (HOTT Shooter elements). Alternative Armies sells generic Elves like these HOT69 Elf Crossbows. But by choosing an overall skin tone, colour scheme, and basing strategy, these elves take on a dark look. Brighter, “nicer” colours might make them look more friendly. I wanted them to look pale, serious, and vicious.

I organised this army around a number of themes: a small number of elves, bolstered by dark forest creatures, minor demons, serpentine servants, and the living dead.

The Dark Elf Witch rides upon her fell beast, flanked by minor demonic knights. And somewhere behind her…… a spider queen is lurking hungrily.

The combination of unwelcoming elves flanked by all sorts of creatures of the night provided an opportunity for the imagination to run wild. That’s one of the most satisfying parts of the hobby: imagination. Being able to create your own story and represent it using miniatures is an incredible amount of creativity and fun. Furthermore, the catalogue at Alternative Armies has so much to choose from that I was literally spoiled for choice in this project with respect to providing the miniatures I needed to make this project as reality.

The Naga – a HOTT ‘Beasts’ element from HOT96 and HOT97

These Elf Swords (HOT72) form a solid line of Dark Elven ‘Executioners’ (HOTT Blades).

The ensorcelled undead (HOT14,40, 41,99) shamble up the line while slinking spiderlings strike from trees and holes in the ground. A rust effect is achieved on metal swords by using Citadel technical paints over Game Colour silver.

When deciding on what sort of army I am going to paint, I like to think of a theme. For this theme, it was Dark Elves, evil creatures and minor demons probably in a forest-like landscape (hence the basing). But perhaps you have other themes you would like to try, such as Human Paladins and knights or Dwarf Engineers and machines. The beauty of HOTT is the freedom to make whatever sort of list you want, so long as it is in the scale requirements for base size and model count.

The centre piece of my army is undoubtedly the Spider Queen, or Behemoth, element. Her majestic, pulsating, bulbous body and realistic gleaming eyes make her an object of terrifying beauty. Her body was painted with many thin layers of white paint with clear medium. Being inspired by internet research of white spiders, I painted her legs’ detail with green, sepia and black washes. Finally, the eyes of the beast were achieved simple a combination of black paint on the eye, two white dots on opposite sides of the eye, painting a ring of black wash around the outside of those eyes, and finishing off with a dab of gloss varnish on each eight eyes.

As for the playability of my army, it’s going to be a lot of fun with surprises. The Spider Queen behemoth can strike right into the centre of the board, flanked by strong Blades and the Aerial Hero. Shooters harass enemy elements into a position where my Knights can charge them down in the open. Hopefully, the Beasts quickly flank the enemy while the Sneaker goes through their ranks, causing chaos and confusion. Meanwhile the Skeleton Hordes are an expendable and resurrected distraction, while gargoyle Flyers may yet out maneuver the enemy lines.

Gargoyles (548 Tabletop Range) behind the Naga and the Witch on Fell Beast (HOT8 and HOT74A)

In conclusion, the main thing I can recommend about hobbying is exercising your imagination, not to mention building problem solving skills, social skills, and kinaesthetic skills. Think of your own list and themes and create the things that you like. It may just inspire a lifetime of creativity and fun.

Thank you for your time and we hope you enjoyed the read!

A treat today with the return of four more classic science fiction miniatures by Asgard to our website.  The only such releases in the scale of 25mm/ 28mm in March 2022.

Two Robots and two Trimotes join the Warbirds, Gorgory, Froog, Szithks, Centalons, Thulgs, Glax, Vroom Beasts and others in the combined Asgard and Tabletop part of the website.  1980's cool which Alternative Armies is happy to say is available once more.

The codes are:

X2 Three Armed robot

X3 Hover Robot

S4 Trimote in Power Armour

Great for any setting and indeed robots are excellent as ship crews or simply to hand in urban centres during a skirmish.

T3 Trimote with Axe (uses generic spears or SF3 Weapons Set in its free hands)

We have a great deal of science fiction to choose from.

Have you checked out the 28mm Ion Age Range (including the recently remastered IA152 Betrayer Alpha Female above), Alternate Stars or the Space Marines and Adventurers?

MFM17 Flying Reptile with Wraith Rider returns

It is our great delight to reveal the first release of 2022 this January and its the first of a great many returned classics.  Added to the Tabletop Miniatures 15mm Range (which contains both Tabletop Games and Asgard 1980's miniatures) the Flying Reptile with Wraith Rider.  There are now some sixty five miniatures returned in this range which covers Dungeon Adventurers, Dwarves, Undead, Monsters, Creatures and more.  There are also some great value saver skirmish packs.

MFM17 Flying Reptile with Wraith Rider: A denizen of pure evil rides upon a creature that feasts upon the flesh of the dead and living alike.  This code contains one 15mm scale model in three pieces these being the body of the reptile, the wings of the reptile and the sitting wraith in robes.  The assembled model is 60mm long and 40mm wide at longest and widest points.  You can choose from the pack or you can select the creature on its own or the rider on its own.

Supplied unpainted and unassembled.  Sculpted in the early 1980's and an original Asgard code.

The mummified wizard on throne now re-mastered into resin with a lower price is a great 15mm scale piece for your collection.  See it in the Tabletop 15mm Fantasy range.

This is our sole 15mm fantasy release for the month at Alternative Armies.

Szithk Commandos and Froog Power Armour classic Tabletop return

We are delighted to return three more classic 1980's science fiction miniatures to the combined Tabletop Games and Asgard Miniatures page of the website.  Our thanks to Mark Stevenson in this and joining the mighty Thulgs, the many legged Centalons and the feline Mrurz are two Szithk and a Froog.  Go HERE for all that we have brought back to the world.

The 'new' codes are:

TSF3 Szithk Commando Leader on Foot

TSF5 Szithk firing Projector

TSF13 Froog in Power Armour

These are great for any game system classically or more recent.  They are larger versions of the 15mm Laserburn range codes 'FR' and 'SZ'.

One of the finest models (in our opinion) from 1980's science fiction is the Szithk War Bird which last year we brought back to the world giving a smile to many.  The rider upon TSF1Male Warbird with Wings is the same reptilian soldier as the new returned TSF3 so you can represent that character mounted or on foot.

The TSF60 Gorgory is a fine ally to the Szithk as both are lizard or reptile type aliens.  See the whole range HERE.
