SVT Play actually streams Kalle Anka live in real time on Christmas Eve.

Only, because of the time difference, it is on at 7am Mountain Time in the US so you will have to watch it with your rice pudding and coffee breakfast rather than in the afternoon.

Här är "Luciamorgon" på SVT Play. Jag hade helst tittat på det till frukost med ett ljus tänt och ett par pepparkakor men var tvungen att åka till jobbet kl. 6 imorse eftersom dom schemalagt tentan för min stora kurs till kl. 7.30 imorse.

Så jag får titta nu - samtidigt som jag undviker att rätta tentorna! - istället.

Nobel Prize Award and Dinner

A very big TV event in Sweden today, Saturday December 10. You can watch it live over STV Play. The point is mainly commenting on the gowns, particularly those worn by the royal family, and the food that's being served at the dinner.


The dinner takes place in Stadshuset in Stockholm. The room is called Blå hallen but is not blue at all. The architect Ragnar Östberg originally intended for the room to have blue walls but changed his mind and instead allowed the red brick in the foundation to remain uncovered.

Personally, I'm still celebrating that Tranströmer got the prize. Here's an interview from 1989 with him, before the stroke, where he reads one of his poems, "Näktergalen i Badelunda."

Näktergalen i Badelunda

I den gröna midnatten vid näktergalens nordgräns. Tunga löv hänger i trance, de döva bilarna rusar mot neonlinjen. Näktergalens röst stiger inte åt sidan, den är lika genomträngande som en tupps galande, men skön och utan fåfänga. Jag var i fängelse och den besökte mig. Jag var sjuk och den besökte mig. Jag märkte den inte då, men nu. Tiden strömmar ned från solen och månen och in i alla tick tack tick tacksamma klockor. Men just här finns ingen tid. Bara näktergalens röst, de råa klingande tonerna som slipar natthimlens ljusa lie.

Eftersom jag firar Norges självständighetsdag (jag måste pga. den höga procenten medlemmar från "Sons of Norway" i min svenskakurs) så tänkte jag att jag skulle slå ett slag för nordiskt brödraskap (syskonskap?) och fira Finland också.

Julpyssel - alternativ julkalender

This post will be in English though the link is in Swedish. The Swedish Church has created an alternative "advents- kalender" with little DIY-projects ("julpyssel" in Swedish) which are mostly recycling common day things you have around the house.

The calendar is intended to get us away from the holiday consumer craze, and to encourage a different kind of Christmas celebration where we instead get to be creative with small means. And I think it works. The projects are adorable, they would be great for some family quality time or for taking a short break (from grading finals if you are me...) during early December. In addition, you get to practice your Swedish and maybe learn a few new words...

So what are you waiting for! Turn off the TV, go find your scissors, some paper, glue and your old watercolors and get to it! Here is the link:
