ONE FELL SWOOP - Crab Medicine

Ed, Joel ,and Chipmonk were joined by guitarist Billy Drake ,the pefect match to spar with Chipmonk's guitar wizardry.And spar they do! Some fine songs are enhanced by Billy's guest appearance ,harkening back to the glory days of the Cat Machine!There is a blow-out Stooges cover (Not Right) ,and it ends with a 12 second hardcore blast ,"Epcot Police State" In between all that though ,you have ace alt-rock ,indie -punk songs ,that the band was always known for. "Minturn ,We Hardly Knew Ye" ,pokes joking fun at Minty ,an older guy musician we knew ,who was arrested for some crap. Maybe a carry-over from Cat Machine's ,"I Hate Vacuums" , the song ,"Ukeleles Suck" is a one-minute blistering blast of anger at the stringed instrument. A few that Joel sings on ,"Lips Of Gods" and "Move Up" ,are true underground alt-pop gems."Born Again Maniac" ,has a tune that will stick in your brain sideways ,like a rotting fish lodged in a dead bear's craw,and will stay with you for days. WHORESHACK - Whoreshack 2 , But Not Too Whoreshack

This is the second recording from the instrumental trio. Although on this round ,from tracks 5 onwards , has special guest guitarist ,Steve Reed ! Kinda like the Ventures , if they were raised on punk and metal music. The only vocals here are imitations of Arnold Horshack , plus 3 covers of , Flipper , The Stooges , and Fear ! And a bunch of idle chit-chat at the last track. And an acapella rendering of the theme song from the Welcome Back Kotter TV show. Recorded live at the Bakery , 3/16/1993. The next post of this band ,will be their first album ,since we worked backwards in succesion. Then after that ,there will be a special posting of their appearance at the coffee house ,with Big Bong Theory ,and Conveyor.

CAT MACHINE - Tony Wakes Up

There's only one more studio tape,and one rehearsal tape after this masterpiece of underground,cult-band madness! This recording had Ed,Joel,Tony,Chipmonk,and Billy on it from 6/23/1991. As with most of these 4-track recordings,all the songs here are top-notch! With a Ventures/Stooges mash-up ,before there ever was that sort of thing,plus each member gets to play a second or two of the guitar solo! The mug shot of Tony ,represents where he was for the previous few tapes,and the title also tells the tale!Here's the track list!

CAT MACHINE -Brave The Green Channel

CAT MACHINE - Yo-Yo Or Pineapple?

The title comes from one of my dad's expressions,he would ask me of my friends."What is that guy?.A yo-yo or a pineapple? And here it referred to Don,a hanger-on who sang ,"Fartsucker" on an earlier Cat Machine tape.There is a song here,"You're Innate (Don)",which speaks directly to him,in a impression of his voice.This is Ed,Joel,Tony,and Chipmonk,no guests.The stand-outs for me here are : "Puddles,Git In Da Goddamn Haus" , "Wayne"(about Wayne Murphy,of The Elephants),"Depths Of Squalor" ,"The Objects Pursued By Fools", "All My Old Bad Dreams (Are Coming True)" ,amongst others.Lubricated Goat is covered acapella on ,"Frotting With Ennio",and The Stooges are given an update on 1969 ,with the topical,"1991".Must've been fighting with Vance during this time period,as there is an unflattering song on here about him.The tape ends with a group instrumental titled,"Disintegrated Dog".Great stuff from the underground,outsider,cult-band ,from Ft.Myers,Florida.

THE GRUNGY DUNGAREES -Working At The Black Label Brewery

The lost tape has been found! A former member of a band called,"Restaurant Sinks",from the 80's,in WA.,sent in the original tape,with a ton of great photos of Grungy Dungarees.The title comes ,apparently,from some of the band members working at the Black Label Brewery,in WA(also some photos of this place). The term ,"grunge",was appropriated from their name ,to designate the new scene.Altho' this was recorded in 1989,just before any grunge bands made it big.The band,members of which later went onto big fame,once again use fake monikers,totally different from the second album.This is a historical piece,and I wish to extend my deepest gratitude to Andy Sordid,for sending this treasure of a relic!Without him,no one would ever have heard this tape,as only a few copies were duped by band members,for close friends,with the stipulation,that it would not make it to the ears of the public.Internet searches turn up nothing on this band.Truly groundbreaking sounds,as Joe Walsh and The Stooges,are covered,along with swell originals.Culled from several recording sessions,at Jack Joe's Studio,in WA.
