The Fog Hats - Too Punk For You!

well, these guys use the word Fog Hat to describe the limp wristed types,to avoid confrontation and having to dispose of trash. They are from the small town of Smithville, OK,and these okies ain't no joke!! They are would be Bums & Losers members, who opted to go full punk, although some of their metal/hard rock aspects show thru.Lyrics are, funny, nostalgic, and sing-a-long punk rock, that all punkers will enjoy.Twinges of grunge and tardcore seep thru as well,Bringing the old punk sound into today's world of shittier and shittier bands/artists.....this is the shit! and the best thing is,there are demos of almost all these songs (all but the last track) ,that have slightly different sound and music, and even vocal style, and will probably be released at some point!

VERTEBRAE - My New Home b/w One Cigarette

Albany ,NY is where this grungy rock band was from . The bassist ,Surgeon General ,was in a NYHC band in 1983 ,"Capitle". Side a is pure grunge ,with almost Gibby-like vocals. Side b is harder edged, bridging hard core to grunge. Not bad for 1991 ,their second release ,on Erl Records. From the 99 cent bin!

FACEPULLER - Pull This 7"

North Vancouver ,BC Canada is where these boys lay their heads. They've been compared to Big Black's noisepunk attack ,but I don't hear that kind of ferocity here. Known as the loudest band in their town ,this was their very first 7" single from 1991 on their own True North Records label. Now out of print ,they were on several compilations ,had music on skateboard and snowboard videos ,and put out a few full-lengths. Classified as a cross-over punk/noise/metal band ,it's all grunge to me.

GRISLY FICTION - Electrolytes b/w Dear Meat

Grunge stylee from Philly,PA ,1991 .Kinda have their own sound ,though derivative of metal and alt-rock of the times. Weird breakdowns that sound warped. Vocals are out of key ,yet fit the strange melodies just fine. 99 cent bin special!

HARDVARK - Dress-Smear On The Race b/w Speed Limit

Champaign ,IL is home to these alt-rock grungers ,who were around in 1991-1995. With art and graphics resembling an Am-Rep release ,the songs are noise-pop ,leaning towards Sonic Youth /Neil Young territory. From 1993 on Mud Records

THROTTLE - New Freaks On The Block 7"

Heat Blast Records ,outta NJ ,put this out in 1991. Featuring the original Oderus Urungus of Gwar, on vocals ,tho' this sounds like a Rollins Band/Soundgarden hybrid ,in the days between post-punk and grunge. A 45 that plays at 33. Joey Slutman (nee Annaruma ,vocals) is now in the Philly based band,Man Is Doomed. Not much to be found on the web about this here slab.

THE EARL'S FAMILY BOMBERS - Winchester 73 - Worth b/w Drag - Love Your Reptile/How's Your School Been

From Arizona ,but immersed in the grunge scene of Seattle in the 90's ,the closest sound I can pinpoint on these guys ,is mid-era Supersuckers.Rockin' and alternative ,and the last track sounds as if it would be a medley of 2 songs ,but instead you get about a minute or so of feedback and noise! Not bad, from the $2.99 bin! Not much info on this group anywhere.1993 Empty Records

BIG SATAN INC. - Tap And Die b/w Scarey Feet

From the Seattle grunge scene of 1987 -1992 ,this is from '92. Metal-soaked grunge riffs ,that will pound your head in! This is on Meat Records ,and the band is now kaput ,I suppose? The kind of shit Billy and Shane would be onto ,if they had heard it back then (or ,maybe now ,who knows?)

SKOLLIWOLL - Free Machines/Ruined b/w Hating Sun

While Skolliwoll is slang for "school" ,in some corners of the world ,these boys brains have boiled inside their skulls over in Arizona! From 1993 ,almost grunge ,I guess ,what would you call it? 3 songs on this 7" single from Third World Underground Records ,back cover graphics make this look like an Amphetamine Reptile release ,and the music is not too far removed from that idea.No info to be found anywhere on this band. From the $2.99 bin! Drink beer and mosh!

ONE FELL SWOOP - Total Odgena

A concept album about a kid,(pictured above), from Anywhere U.S.A., traveling to Seattle ,to become a grunge star ,after seeing Nirvana's ,"Smells Like Teen Spirit" ,on MTV. Much like Husker Du's conceptual double LP ,"Zen Arcade" , each song takes you thru a different part of the kid's journey. I'll give you the play-by-play ,because this story is so cool!
1.A Good Question - the album starts off with this instrumental ,the kid asking himself if fleeing to Seattle is a good idea.
2.The Incorrect Time - the perils of traveling into another time zone ,east to west.
3.Egypt Silt Went Goo - the crappy ,rainy conditions in Seattle ,do nothing to preserve valuables
4.Ask Northwest Dio - the kid comes upon a street dweller ,a homeless Dio-looking character ,who he asks about the local music scene.
5.Missing Women - the kid learns of The Green River Killer's exploits.
6.Socially Correct? - The kid questions if the grunge scene is too PC for his tastes.
7.If 6 Was 9 (Jimi Hendrix) - the evironment has changed his mind-set,and the kid writes an original song ,starts a little band, and plays out live.
8.Today Your Love,Tomorrow The World (Ramones) - the kid and his band , Total Odgena ,become overnight stars
9.Teenage Head (The Flamin' Groovies) - The basic autobiography of the kid ,up till now.
10.Chirping Psycho-Babble - the kid meets and dates a crazy grunge groupie, and has to listen to her bitching ,whining ,moaning, and complaining.
11.American Woman (The Guess Who) - The kid meets some canadians ,who have crossed the border ,also to find fame ,but find the scene and the annoying grunge girls ,too much for them to deal with , and they persuade the kid into dumping his squawky big bird girlfriend.
12.Smells Like Beans Near It - the kid becomes quickly disillusioned with the scene ,after a review of his song ,and the whole grunge scene ,is scathingly reviewed in a local music rag.
13.Fresca Chase - the kid gathers up his few belongings ,and with his last few dollars ,buys a cheap bottle of booze ,to drown his memories.
14.Colombus Was A Nazi - "America is facist"! ,thinks the kid to himself ,wondering why he can't get accepted into the social norms.
15.The World For Ransom - grunge music takes over the pop and metal charts ,leaving people scratching their heads in disbelief.
16.La Comparsa - the kid compares his life before and after grunge music ,in this re-hash of the Candy Butcher's tune ,"Crummy Turkey"
17.Sweater Heads - people the world over are blinded by the hype of grunge ,every band thinks they will move to Seattle and be stars.
18.Forget Stride - the kid realizes that this music scene ,really has no leg to stand on ,as more bands are signed to major labels ,and many videos are put into heavy rotation on the video networks.
19.A Good Answer - closing out with another instrumental ,and the reality of heading back to where he came from , and how lame an idea it was to even come out here ,to become a junkie/rock star ,like his idols.

Total Odgena means "bad heartburn" ,by the way . Pass the TUMS! This is kinda based on the true story of friends of ours from Ft. Myers ,who fled to Seattle to try and be scenesters ,and launch their bands. They all came back home ,eventually. Which is the basic message of this album , you'll always end up back where you first started. One of the best and most cohesive OFS albums up till this point ,with great tunes ,awesome lyrics and vocals ,weird samples in between some songs ,and the whole conceptual story line. Our live set list sometimes included the Hendrix and Groovies songs. Recorded 20 years ago today! 11/5/1991

THE GRUNGY DUNGAREES -Working At The Black Label Brewery

The lost tape has been found! A former member of a band called,"Restaurant Sinks",from the 80's,in WA.,sent in the original tape, with a ton of great photos of Grungy Dungarees. The title comes ,apparently, from some of the band members working at the Black Label Brewery,in WA(also some photos of this place). The term ,"grunge",was appropriated from their name ,to designate the new scene.Altho' this was recorded in 1989,just before any grunge bands made it big.The band, members of which later went onto big fame, once again use fake monikers, totally different from the second album. This is a historical piece, and I wish to extend my deepest gratitude to Andy Sordid, for sending this treasure of a relic!Without him,no one would ever have heard this tape,as only a few copies were duped by band members, for close friends, with the stipulation, that it would not make it to the ears of the public.Internet searches turn up nothing on this band.Truly groundbreaking sounds,as Joe Walsh and The Stooges, are covered, along with swell originals.Culled from several recording sessions,at Jack Joe's Studio,in WA.

CAT MACHINE - 2-eaten alive by wild dogs

On this second tape,Oct. 2nd,1990, we kinda jam like the first tape, there is the original version of "Queen Turd Of Shit Hill",which sounds nothing like what it ended up to be.There is also a second version of Queen Turd here, which does sound like an embroyonic version of what became a live staple. We cover the Stooges, then I went to pick up our special guest for this tape,Chuck Connell. While I was gone,Joel & Tony tore off a really cool, spooky little refrain titled,"One Creepy Little Town",about life in the FTM.It is the mellowest song here,as well as the quietest.Yes there is much feedback noise,of the grunge variety, like Jesus Lizard,or somethin'.When Chuck joined in on this tape,(he's here for half the tape),things, suddenly picked up,into an almost different band.We all take turns singing, even Chuck. Some highlights are,"The Mighty Cat Machine" , You're So Contrary,Chees'd Psychic Ya" , and one of our many shining moments,"Come Hang With Me".Chuck plays the bass, like a son-of-a-gun,he is the bassmaster! The next 4 tapes in this year long series, are not dated, but in exact position in the masters vault,as the day they were recorded,so they are in order.I'll post one per each Friday in October, which is probably about right, as the next dated tape is 11/10/90 .Anyway, get this, give Chuck praise in the comments(he plays bass on tracks 12 thru 22),and don't forget, the Cat Machine tribute comp, which I think I may wait till next year, when this series runs out,and all the tapes are posted, and you'll be able to learn any one of our hundreds of songs, and send it in for the tribute post!! Enjoy this. Chuck is moving back to the FLA !!! living just 30-40 minutes from me,we will be working on lots of music together!

THE GRUNGY DUNGAREES-the collective spasms of.....

This is a virtually unknown, unreleased band from the grunge days of the early 90's.Recorded in two days in may of '90,in a smelly house. They do these freaky instrumentals,as well as some singing. They also cover a strange cross section of bands:Stooges(2 times),Misfits,Pink Floyd,Link Wray,Sexboy,Sockeye, and,The Blood Red Oscars. This is an essential document of music from the transition into grunge music. They may even have coined the phrase,"grunge",as it relates to music, and their band was such named before the term was being used,at all.Probably the most important band of it's time, inspiring bands like the ones in the Seattle grunge scene.May even include members who later went on to fame in bands that made lots of money later, but here they use made-up names, and there is no info at all, anywhere about these guys.Almost like the Memphis Goons of the grunge scene. There may be a lost tape out there,as well.

ANTI-SOBER SOCIETY-substance abuse

A.S.S. is jamie and mason, with a tribute to asseater, tho' it sounds nothing like that band.no titles, but there is a song called,"stairway to heaven"(not the zep song),that's dedicated to me.first coupla tunes are feedback laden amphetemine-reptile style noise/grunge.then things get decidedly lo-fi,more-so than usual.you need to crank it to hear some fine little ditties, sounds like they're wasted!

SUBVERSIVES-luz

this trio, produced here by sean burch,is rodney rivadeneira on drums, mike skold on guitars, and tom lawson on bass and vocals.kind of a grunge/alt./slacker sound, lazy vocals, and poor production.it would have benefitted with a straight mix.instead sean pans the sound back and forth, channel to channel, almost to the point of distraction, but is saved by samples of the movie "the trip"with bruce dern, peter fonda, and dennis hopper, written by jack nicholson.these guys were after our reign,i know they played live,i never saw them ,and i don't think i know any of them.i have a second tape,"amphora",by them, if they contact me with more info,or someone requests it.till then here they are, subversives.

HEADLAUNCHERS

this little combo sprang up from joel, and i believe(joel correct me if i'm wrong)frank t.,tall ray, mike mezaros(mcschwuggles),someone else i can't recall, and later ,chipmunk.kinda alternative /psych/grunge/schwag ,with keys, guitar, bass, drums, and some vocals, where i think everyone gets a turn or two in some cases.really introspective, real life situationists, who could jam a carrot or a hat box,if no actual instruments were readily available.a cover of "wipe out" is included, kinda velvet/sonic/butts sound goin' down,i'm sure joel could add some commentary in the comments box below.check that for more info!for now, just slip this on and relax!
