THE JACKIE EARLE HALEYS - The Unreleased Tapes

Dug up some stuff from the vault.I was supposed to release this last year at this time,as there was a song to be pulled from this session,(our last full recording, recorded, mixed ,mastered and put to cassette ,all in one night!),that was slated for the 100 band compilation ,"Big Tit Hoagie" ,which has still not got it's shit together ,and gotten released yet, sheesh! Myself was on vocals, lyrics, and drums, mostly, maybe a little guitar as well.Billy Drake, did all lead guitars, and was/is the greatest guitarist I've ever known.Even though this band was based on 70's bands like T.Rex,Sweet,Kiss,Slade, and other rock and hard rock bands,Billy was as knowlegeable at  70's rock as he was at psych, folk, flamenco, grunge, and any other style you may want to mention. As well as being a multi-instrumentalist,as most all of us were in the close-knit Ft. Myers scene.Vance Burdge ,my best pal,is on bass, and some guitars as well.He did the recordings thru an analog 4-track cassette recorder, the same kind of old machinery that I still use til this day.Vance also mixed this stuff ,I believe,It may have been me,we both would do those duties, sometimes both of us would do our own mix,so there would be different versions /mixes ,of the songs.Vance is one of the most talented musicians I know of,multi-instrumental,plus studio ,mix, master, recording know-how.Anyway,back to these recordings,10 tracks of 70's styled rock, although we were getting a little bit too far away from home here, straying off into ballads,blues,funk,southern-rock,a cover of a Supersuckers tune, and a handful of tunes that both musically and lyrically, hearken back to our beginnings. When the band started it was just me and Vance.Billy joined ,eventually ,because he was usually hanging out while Vance and I were writing songs. At one point ,we had a full -line-up adding Mike Smith on drums, and recorded 3 practice sessions,2 of which I have, and need to upload. The first Haleys release was cobbled together from almost every tape session we recorded. There were many songs left off,and there will be a new compilation posted here, soon,as well as those live sessions. We were practicing so we could play gigs, but our drummer didn't really like the "rock and roll" sound of the band and left soon after. We never played live, but Vance and I did acoustic versions of a couple Haleys tracks at an open mic night at The Draft House in downtown Ft. Myers, back when it was a shit hole, and not all glitzy and glamorous like today. We did record one more song after this session, our last tune is called ,"(I Wanna Be A) Busboy",and is on the first compilation ,found elsewhere on this blog,if you want to hear the sound of a band making it happen, even in the face of breaking up.There's more to come, don't be sad. This isn't our best work, but it still ranks up there .

REDD KROSS -Neurotica

1987,Redd Kross's LP ,Neurotica was released.I bought it on vinyl when it came out, still have it,this rip is from my LP.All the crackles are intact for that warm analog feel. They always had,and still have, that groovy 70's vibe, like a modern-day Partridge Family.Their look, sound, and attitude is total 70's worship, which ,like, somebody has to carry on,right? No one does it better than these guys.I also tacked on several tracks they did on the "Lovedoll Superstar" soundtrack, some with the Lovedolls, one by themselves, and one under a different name, where they are nearly unrecognizable. My friend Jeff "Fred" McDonald, passed away last year, and he coincidentally had the same name ,(and he looked identical, nearly, bottom right corner dude, yep, that's him!), as one of the brothers on this LP,so this goes out to him,and I posted this as a request from Vance Burdge,my good friend, who could not find this masterpiece online,(I have since tracked it down on youtube).Good times for all,I cannot disagree! On a side note, the masks pictured on the front (and back) cover ,were previously used in one of the many 60's surf movies,Frankie and Annette,I believe the masks were in a haunted house ,maybe at a carnival or amusement park? I can't remember the name of the flick, but I have it on vhs,and have watched it,and all those goofy surf movies, multiple times.Fun fact. Also Ihave lots more Redd Kross stuff on this blog,including,out-takes and demos from this here LP,also Red Cross demos ,first album,as well as other sundries and surprises.

REDD KROSS - Teen Babes From Monsanto

Yup,Them McDonald boys whipped up this collection of some of their favorite covers back in 1984.I mean Kiss,The Stones,Bowie,The Stooges,The Shangri-La's,a Boyce and Hart tune I saw Serena (Samantha's cousin) sing on Bewitched once, and a cover of themselves.I also tacked on bonus cuts from various compilations they appeared on,some are covers,The Go-Go's and The Beatles may be covered ,as well,in keeping with the tradition established here. They have always been a covers type band ,but usually pick rarely heard songs, and make them their own.Or well-known tunes that they can tear the roof off of. A direct rip from my vinyl LP. Dedicated to the memory of Jeff "Fred" McDonald, and to my pal Vance Burdge.

WHORESHACK - LIVE! AT THE MAIN STREET COFFEE HOUSE ,FT. MYERS ,FLORIDA

The first and last ever ,live gig by Whoreshack. We were third choice openers since the band Deadbone ,who was originally scheduled to open ,had their drummer die on them ,the second choice opening band ,Turd Thermos ,were all school kids ,who could'nt play because they got caught skipping school ,and most of the band was grounded. So we opened for Conveyor and Big Bong Theory ,thoroughly trashing the audience with our huge cocks! We were a hard act to follow ,baiting the audience with an almost Fear-like venom!A few covers ,mixed in with all original improv instrumentals ,and the hit song ,"Not Come Down". There was fun in the air ,as it was Labor Day Weekend 1993 ,and the boys were crankin' out this slop ,to an undeserving audience.Fuck them! Now you can experience the madness ,without actually having to stand in a room full of slackers, losers, and smelly crust punks and dead heads! This is the shit! Vance played drums ,since original drummer,Mike Smith, was home sleeping!

WHORESHACK - s/t debut

In light of the recent passing of Ron Palillo ,a/k/a Horshack ,I am posting the last few Whoreshack releases. This is the debut tape ,recorded live at The Bakery ,March 13,1993. Ed handles guitar and vocals,Billy on guitar, and Mike on drums.Mostly experimental instrumentals ,Whoreshack was the local version of the Ventures (if they were raised on punk rock ,and started their group in the 1990's)I've posted all the tapes ,backwards to forwards ,from the 6th release ,to this first one here. The post above this ,is actually the final recording ,of their first ever ,and last ever ,live gig ,recorded after the 6th release (The Zipper) ,and with Vance on drums ,in lieu of Mike. But more on that later. This is an amazing start ,to a short -lived band ,which never really got their due,in the time of their existence. I can't really say too much more ,except , let the music do the talking!

ONE FELL SWOOP - Live! at the Corkscrew Ranch ,Ft. Myers ,Florida ,3/21/1992

This is the second to last show by these guys (the next day was our final gig at Serena's ,a rock/metal club in Cape Coral ,but more on that later!) We were first to play in a line-up of over 10 bands ,our first time with a bass player ,Vance Burdge ,helping us out. The music sounds top-notch ,but we were out doors ,and the P.A. system was not loud enough to catch most of the vocals.Pictured above is beautiful, royal palm-lined McGregor Blvd. ,a side-road off of which led to the ranch.A very receptive crowd of everyone in the scene was in attendance ,and it was one of our finest moments. As previously mentioned ,the next day was our last show at Serena's ,and we had a flyer which stated it was a benefit for some dead girl ,who was not actually dead ,at the time ,and her parents were awfully pissed off ,when they learned of our advertisement. There were hair-bands and metal-heads galore ,we were the only alt-rock college music band playing ,and they sent us off to the upstairs stage ,while they ruled the main stage on the lower floor. Since we had drawn a crowd upstairs ,these fucking heshers followed us up ,as to eject us from the stage.A classic line was thrown at me and Chipmonk by one of them ,"Hey ,did you teach him to play guitar ,or did he teach you?" My reply was ,"We taught each other!" They did not like that,to say the least. Sadly the gig was not recorded,so this Corkscrew Ranch gig ,is our final recorded legacy. There is still one missing studio track ,with the core trio ,and Eric "Trig" Triglet ,on vocals (produced by Vance at his Kitty Grind Studios ,in the Cape). When I locate that ,I will surely post it ,as well as some remixes from various live offerings. Enjoy it ,and wish yourself back to the salad days of the FTM. Recorded 20 years ago, today!!!!!

CAT MACHINE - Pathetic Jonesing

Yes ,that's Sluggisha the Cat,in his Elvis get-up,in downtown Ft. Myers ,because this is when Cat Machine ,"left the building" ,so to speak. This is the 50th recording made by this under-appreciated,underground,outsider,cult-band,and it was to be their last ,at least of this era. 9 perfect studio recordings from Ed,Joel,Tony,Chipmonk, and Billy.Recorded July 13,1991 ,20 years ago, yesterday. There is a rehearal tape from Sept 2,1991 (which I will post on that date!) ,for a gig at the old rock club ,"Norma's" ,at which an A & R person, was coming to observe us,both of which never materialized, which spelled the end of Cat Machine.Ed ,Tony, and Joel ,reformed later as the "Projek Pimps" for one tape, and there is also ,"Litterbox" ,the greatest hits comp, and "The Last Newest One " ,where Vance replaces Chipmonk, and also the phenomenal 10 disc cross-section of every tape posted ,"The Mystery,The History,And Shit" ,all of which can be found on this here blog ,as well as,(now), the whole catalog of their year-long journey into indie-band cassette-label territory!

Since this is the end of this series, and because of the importance of this band to the Ft. Myers,FL underground scene ,I am compiling covers of Cat Machine songs,as played by other artists! Please ,if you are in a band, you know someone in a band, you are a band, download some Cat Machine, record a cover version, and send it in to me! When I get enough submissions,I will put together a compilation, and may even have it for sale ,before it is posted on this or any other blog! So please ,if you need help with lyrics, let me know,I have every word ever written ,stored away in the vault! You can contact me thru the comments box,I will get in touch with you!

WGOD #44 -GODCAST 1992 -Live Remote From Joel's

Touted at the time as the most diverse W.G.O.D. tape yet,Joel's influence on this podcast is far-reaching. Joel,Phil,Vance and I ,pick the songs, and you listen intently.I, as your DJ, let you know what's playing! In 2 parts,as the whole thing would not fit on a disc(if that's your intention).A really good set of great music, all of which is timeless. If you want more of WGOD ,please leave me comments, and I'll try to post more. There are literally hundreds of tapes like this one in the vault. If I had an I-Pod ,WGOD would be on that thing all day, every day!

CAT MACHINE - Yo-Yo Or Pineapple?

The title comes from one of my dad's expressions,he would ask me of my friends."What is that guy?.A yo-yo or a pineapple? And here it referred to Don,a hanger-on who sang ,"Fartsucker" on an earlier Cat Machine tape. There is a song here,"You're Innate (Don)",which speaks directly to him,in a impression of his voice. This is Ed,Joel,Tony, and Chipmonk,no guests. The stand-outs for me here are : "Puddles,Git In Da Goddamn Haus" , "Wayne"(about Wayne Murphy,of The Elephants),"Depths Of Squalor" ,"The Objects Pursued By Fools", "All My Old Bad Dreams (Are Coming True)" ,amongst others.Lubricated Goat is covered acapella on ,"Frotting With Ennio",and The Stooges are given an update on 1969 ,with the topical,"1991".Must've been fighting with Vance during this time period,as there is an unflattering song on here about him.The tape ends with a group instrumental titled,"Disintegrated Dog".Great stuff from the underground,outsider,cult-band ,from Ft.Myers,Florida.

CAT MACHINE -Felching Pat Harrington Jr.

Just try to come up with a more disgusting thought, than the title of this album.I included 2 different cover arts, cuz I could'nt decide on one. This tape ,from January 15th,1991,features special guests ,Chuck Connell,Vance Burdge,Chris Nicholson (R.I.P.),and Pizza Breath,in addition to the core trio of Ed,Tony, and Joel.Chuck has his own little section here, with ,"Chuck's Corner",and Chris sing/talks on ,"Shrimp Circus" , and "Fizz Fazz(Sausage)".A few spoken pieces, with all of us talking, and some rap/hip-hop on ,"Battle Of The Rock Lords",and the debut of "Cat Machine Is In The Haus".Covers of Ramones and Jefferson Bullshit,at end.,I would'nt download it tho',because this underground,outsider,unknown,cult-band,is one of the worst bands that ever played. And I mean best when I say worst.Recorded straight to boombox,in FT.Myers,FL,at Cat Machine House.

CAT MACHINE - 1/2 Live- 1/2 P.I.S.T.(Pretty Industrial Studio Thing)

Another masterpiece from the boys,Ed,Tony, and Joel, with special guest Vance (rhythm) ,on tracks 17,18,and 19.The first 14 tracks are live in Joel's room, with a special interruption visit, from Gramps. And there's a song about Kelly Clark, which only insiders may understand. The second half is ,as the title describes,"industrial",as in loud, metallic beats, and noise, and "studio",as in 4-track recording.A couple of lengthy songs(one titled,"The Black Swan"),the first version of ,"Bonk Fever",(which shows up in it's best version ,on the very next tape),And a bizzare number,"Snake Crane Secret",which is then remixed, screwed and chopped, for the last track.A wild ride, for sure,as is the case with all of the Cat Machine's recordings!Stay tuned here, for the rest of everything this underground, outsider ,cult band, ever recorded ,will be posted!!

CAT MACHINE -Tribe Of The Moon

We now return to you the Cat Machine masters series! On this, their 8th foray into oblivion,Cat Machine was,Ed,Joel,& Tony, with special guests,Vance Burdge, and a sampler.Weird recording techniques,lo-fi and over modulation, the sampler on a seemingly retardo-bot trail of oddness. There is a track named,"Mortville",which is about the magical land in John Water's film,"Desperate Living",and features hilarious samples of Edith Massey as Queen Carlotta."Filth Makin' Filth" is here as well as the always gutbusting,"Turtleduck Tears",written about a bleach blond buzzcut, jewish ,nazi ,skinhead girl we knew. Some of the weirdest moments are in the last few tracks,"Octopus Diaper","Frankenstein Biker",and "Millenium's End",where the sampling just goes berserk on overload!Recorded 11/28/1990,in Joel's room at Cat Machine house.Cover model is Kim Falcon, who usually poses for retro-rockabilly bands,in the 50's style of cheesecake photos, get the full 90 minute meltdown.Really cool sound!

CAT MACHINE-Kroonchy Stars All-Loser Jam (We Suck, We Know It,And We Don't Care !)

The third tape from the "mighty" Cat Machine,is the core group of Tony & Joel Rizzo,Ed Wood (me) and special guests for the full duration of this outing are Chuck Connell,Billy Drake, and Vance Burdge.A lot of noise is kicked up,some real speaker shredding tunes, these are. There are a few early versions of songs that show up a few tapes later, sounding more song-like,specifically,"Plastic Jesus","Shit On A Stick","I'll Brain Ya !",and,"Whiskey For Lunch". Then a few more tapes after that, you have different versions of these songs : "Gov. Bob","Who The Hell Is Me Again?","Shit Lipstick", "36 Cents","Her Husband Was There",and "Lon Chaney Jr.'s Dead". Another few songs from this release appear on later tapes,in tweaked forms.Chuck holds down a lot of the jams, with his bass expertise, and Billy tears off a few good riffs.I noticed i did most of the vocals, but i think some of the other guys do some too. This is a great live document, recorded as most of the "Machine's" tapes were, direct to boombox. We did a lot of 4 -track recording,as well, but more sporadically than the live tapes, which averaged 1-2 ,90 minute tapes a week !Some of this may be harmful to pets and other living things, beware!!!
This was recorded on October 8th,1990.   https://sluggishatapes.bandcamp.com/album/cat-machine-kroonchy-stars-all-loser-jam-we-suck-we-know-it-and-we-dont-care

TANKOTA 3 - bacon cavern

The band of guitarists, who broke away from the Apocalyptic Centurions,to become their own entity. This time round,Vance and I are joined by Joel ,and on rudimentary percussion,(a first for Tankota) is Kathy of the world renowned band ,Wigbarn. The feelings on this are mostly ambient noise, bacon sizzling, pots and pans being jostled, feedback frenzy. There is a 5 section Overture to be found here,as well. This band could change your life,or their strings.

TANKOTA 2-sheeps and goats

We're not talking sheeps and goats literally here, but we might as well be.4 guitar instrumentals,by the duo of me and Vance.Lost the track list,it's somewhere around the vault,so i can't pinpoint an actual date, but this is the 2nd release from Tankota. One track is extra long, very ambient, with interruptions of grating noise.enjoy whilst waiting for the next one.

EPHEDRINE SYMPHONY-live at the draft house tavern,1/13/93

Hey,it's these guys 4th gig ever, before delving into the full-fledged Fall worship, tho' a Fall song is covered here,at least lyrically. Also ,"The Draft House Theme",the last track here,is based on a Tim Buckley number, and is great!Kinda free-jazz,beat-poet,beatnik punk, that you can really wrap your head around.Check it out,we play at midnite!.Get the other 2 live sets ,previously posted, where we really get down and dirty with a bunch of The Fall tunes(and a Burl Ives song!).This is really cool,I think you shall dig!Me on keys,Joel (as Mark E. Smith)on vocals,Vance bass,Philbert Ze Chocolat Clown on sax,Sean Burch percussion.

WHORESHACK-four-track

this is the 4th release from WHORESHACK!.recorded live in the bakery, this time on a four track recorder, and with special guest,on bass, vance burdge.me billy, and mike,do our thing, and vance adds another dimension to the proceedings.there should be four songs on here so it could be titled thusly:"WHORESHACK FOUR TRACK FOUR-TRACK",but alas, only 3 tracks here, but indeed recorded on a 4-track machine.instrumentals touching on some key people and places in the kotter series.3-27-93 is the date, and i can smell the stale bread from here! the picture is ,"whoreshack four-track rorschach",ha,ha.
