ONE FELL SWOOP - First Gig Practice Tape

This is a re-post of the practice for the first One Fell Swoop gig!(originally posted May 7,2010).
Recorded live, 1/23/1992,(20 years ago ,today!), at Gramps, the Cat Machine house, and the typewriter case, pizza pan drum rim, hammer and pliers drumset is in full-effect.The first half is originals, the second half we cover: the Flamin' Groovies(twice), the Fall, Hendrix(2 hits), and Kiss. The between song banter is good for a few guffaws, and we were still re-learning these songs, picked from several sessions. Good for what it is. The song," I Need Cash",swipes a Kike riff! The first gig led to a residency as the "house" band of the Draft House, (for a few months), we actually cracked downtown wide open ,bringing in opening acts ,and making a place for kids to hang out ,and see and hear local and out-of-area bands. Before that ,there wasn't really any venues for punk/alternative bands to play. Art by Eric J. This has been posted for nearly 2 years ,and only 10 downloads? Well ,now that I've fit it into the sequence of tapes ,posted in order of their recording dates ,maybe more of you will get to hear this!

ONE FELL SWOOP - Prepare My Dome

With a Chipmonk lookalike on the cover, and more of the downtrodden ,blues sound ,that they were playing at the time, this is another winner! One from the set-list is here ,Chipmonks
's moment ,"Out The Way" ,kind of has a Sonic Youthy feel to it. "Ringing Water" starts it off and some of my favorite tunes follow ,(tho this thing is not to be missed),"Gun And You" ,and "Tired Of Self". The most surreal and "One of these things just don't belong" moments on here ,is the last track ,"Dirt Throwing Crowd Screaming Nazi" ,a joyous sing-a-long ,that you will be singing along to ,whether you want to or not ,as it will become imbedded in your brain-meat.Also an appearance by Gramps on , "Do They Sell Dirty Blankets At The Store?" ,for comic relief. Recorded 11/16/1991.

ONE FELL SWOOP - The Lungs Have Eyes

The 14th (!) release from this unheard,underground,outsider,cult-band ,who picked up where Cat Machine left off! This is one of my personal favorites from OFS ,with really good songs ,and a cover of "Night Of The Living Baseheads" ,by Public Enemy! A dog named,"Catfish" ,(the song has a weird breakdown in the middle ,with mechanical sounds and some sort of horn),"Mall Music", and "A Metal Thing" ,in which Gramps arrives at the end of the tune ,to talk/inquire about, "a metal thing". I mean this thing is great from start to finish,I really do enjoy it,and so should you. A good starting point ,for those not yet in the know! The album title relates to weed ,in some way! Recorded 10/22/1991, 20 years ago today!

CAT MACHINE - Dude! ,That's Penis! a/k/a Live At Gramps's -May 1991

A short rehearsal of 4 tunes,(each member sings one) , opening for Myopia ,on this tape,(Myopia's set is here: http://sluggisha.blogspot.com/2008/11/m-y-o-p-i.html ),as well as live. One of the few tapes with a real drum set,as we usually resorted to drum machines, and other more primitive percussion. I don't know if I ever went into the meaning of the title, so,here goes: Ashey moved between Massachussetts and Florida a few times.Once ,upon his return,he was using the phrase ,"Dude! ,that's penis!" ,which he said meant ,"cool" ,up in MA. We just rolled about, and laughed, and used it for a tape title, which was the usual progression of a catchphrase,at least in Cat Machine's world.

CAT MACHINE -Brave The Green Channel

Titled after the pool at Cat Machine House, which was always green with algae.Lots of cryptic titles, and bizarre music. There are the obligatory covers of ,The Fall and The Stooges. If you've been riding this train since the beginning of this year-long series, you know what to expect. If you're new to this underground,outsider,cult-band,I'd suggest you start anywhere, and be sure to get all their great releases!Ed,Tony,Joel,Chipmonk and Billy 3/16/1991,live to boombox,at Gramps'(who appears on the track,"Buncha Bikes").

CAT MACHINE - Frankie Goes To Horrible

Thankfully,no Frankie Goes To Hollywood songs are covered!Ed,Tony,Joel,Chipmonk, and Billy, give us some fine songs to savor ,tho'."Charlie & Gramps" , "Floppy Gopher" , "Sy Spurlin's Sperm Count" , "Leif Garrett's Prostate Gland" ,"Crumbcake Rescue" , and ,"Groggy Hotrod",are just some of the great tunes you'll be hearing,on this ,their 29th release! One of the most stupendous moments comes mid-way thru the song ,"Today We Live",when brothers ,Tony and Joel ,start arguing! In the middle of the song! We just keep going, and Joel kicks back in with some angry drumbeats! From 2/29/1991,recorded staight to boombox,at the Cat Machine House.

CAT MACHINE -Tooth Breath Spewdom Not Sneeze

Don't know about that title, but the music is fine!Ed,Joel,Tony,Chipmonk, and special guests,Shane Carwile, and Billy Drake,on 2/16/1991,in the FTM.Really good tunes here include: "Song For Billy To Sing", "Song For Billy To Sing Again",(Billy never actually sings,or utters a word for that matter,on either of these tracks) ,"Gettin' The Gumption" ,"Suicidal Ballerina Blues" , "The Strangled Penguin's Chrome Glider Dream" , "Accidental Toaster","90 Cups Of Coffee An Hour",and "Cowering Spastics".The whole thing is great altogether,I'm just pointing out some highlights,or lowlights,as the case may be.The 26th release from this obtuse,outsider,unknown,undiscovered,cult-band,from Ft.Myers,Florida,80's thru 90's.Keep following their path to eventual destruction,in the rest of this year-long series, more coming soon!

CAT MAC HINE - Keep Out Period

Title comes from,I think a sign on Gramp's door.2/12/1991 .Ed,Joel,Tony,Chipmonk with special guests ,Shane Carwile and Mason.Once again,Chipmonk steals the spot light ,especially on 3 in a row hits ,"Mortgage Balloon", Choppin' Block" ,and "Molotov Chain Cow".He also has a few more great moments like ,"Chisel Face Polio Nun".Cover of the Kinks,"You Really Got Me".Topical tale about Tony,on ,"Stimey Can't Party No Mo",funny story on ,"He Wore A Tie To Woodshop".

CAT MACHINE - Brilliant Grimace

Just the core trio of Ed,Joel,Tony and special guest Philbert Ze Chocolat Clown, who sings most awesomely on a totally tubular number called ,"Nub Rock".Chipmonk was not here this day.Jerry Lee makes a brief appearance,Mr. Rogers is here ,too, for a few seconds.Gramps makes a few guest appearances, and you get good songs in between, like "Align Period Showcase" ,"Space Case" ,"Unsuitable Job" ,"Tree House" , and Tony crooning like Frankie Sinatra on "I Don't Like It Like This" ,accompanied by suitably loungy music.Lots of funny moments on here, recorded February 5th,1991, 20 years ago ,today! And how about the Satan Grimace ,looking down on the biology model Grimace!Stay tuned for the continuation of this year-long series!

CAT MACHINE -Ironic Tutu

The boys 22nd release, recorded on 2/2/1991,hence the title. Some of Chipmonk's best numbers are here, including,"Mall Cop", "Hell On Toast", "Tuff Luck Charlie",and "My Job Lifting Mops".Special guest was Don,who sings in his normal mongoloidal voice on ,"Fart Sucker".Other highlights are a few visits from Gramps,Christy and Zolon, and a few little short humorous pieces, scattered throughout.Chipmonk's guitar work here is astounding, even college-rock on songs like,"Come Live In Theory",and "We Hold These Truths".Tony goes wild on,"Time Loses From Earth/Fuck Head Dad" as does Joel on ,"Not No God".And Ed J. sings funny stuff like,"Under Ogle The Rafters", and "Stinky Bike Sacrifice".James Brown is even idolized on,"Dustin' With J.B.",about his troubles with the law,PCP,and car chases.A really good session, don't miss it!!

CAT MACHINE - 21st Century Spastic Soggy Big Gulp

Cryptic song titles, lead to cryptic lyrics, lead to cryptic music, which sounds nothing at all like Cryptic Slaughter! This is a weird one, like these guys were on a different drug on this day,1/29/1991.Ed,Joel,Tony and Chipmonk, with special guest Philbert Ze Chocolat Clown, lead you down the cryptic path of cryptosity, with this collection of out-there tunes. Some highlights are:"She's Bonkin' It",the follow-up to their hit,"Bonk Fever","That Kind Of Woman","Balls Over Choo Choo","Bike In The Fuckin' Haus",which is a Gramps appearance, and an impromptu acapella version of,"Reminiscing",by some 70's light pop group whose name I can't recall at the moment.Very weird stuff here, you may need to imbibe heavily for this 'un!

CAT MACHINE - 1/2 Live- 1/2 P.I.S.T.(Pretty Industrial Studio Thing)

Another masterpiece from the boys,Ed,Tony, and Joel, with special guest Vance (rhythm) ,on tracks 17,18,and 19.The first 14 tracks are live in Joel's room, with a special interruption visit, from Gramps. And there's a song about Kelly Clark, which only insiders may understand. The second half is ,as the title describes,"industrial",as in loud, metallic beats, and noise, and "studio",as in 4-track recording.A couple of lengthy songs(one titled,"The Black Swan"),the first version of ,"Bonk Fever",(which shows up in it's best version ,on the very next tape),And a bizzare number,"Snake Crane Secret",which is then remixed, screwed and chopped, for the last track.A wild ride, for sure,as is the case with all of the Cat Machine's recordings!Stay tuned here, for the rest of everything this underground, outsider ,cult band, ever recorded ,will be posted!!

CAT MACHINE-live at the hair ball/3 dead mice e.p.

Today is the 20th anniversary of Cat Machine. The first tape, presented here in it's entirety, for the first time ever, was recorded on 9/25/1990,in the living room of what later became known as,"Cat Machine" house,it belonged to Gramps,Tony and Joel Rizzo's grandfather. The first eight songs comprise the "live" part of this tape, and consist mostly of instrumental jams, but there are some vocals on several songs. We were mainly just getting to know each others styles on this one,and it started as it remained for the complete tenure of the "Machine",a 1-2-3-go! style, where one guy would come up with a riff, and everyone else would follow. All the songs on the live segment, were spontaneous, and improvisational, with no overdubs or edits. There's a song on here,to try and cash in on the dance craze (of the early 60's),"Do The Scab".It never really caught on.The last track,"3 Dead Mice",is Tony,Joel, and I,all reading from different books, out loud,at the same time.

The e.p. titled,"3 Dead Mice",has 4-track recordings, done on the same day."Throw It To The Dogs",starts out with a mean dog growling, evilly, till the music and Tony's vocals kick in.One of our biggest hits, and a staple of our live sets, the second track,"Crazy Mary",is about this old cat lady that lived in one of the rooms in Cat Machine house. She had tons of cats, and was indeed, crazy.Kind of a weird, surrealistic view,of what she probably was thinking. Some of the lines, are things she actually said."86 Tony",is a take-off on one of the boy's earlier bands who did a tune called,"86 Whitey".And the final track is the one from whence we got our name."Cat Machine",is what the title says.We took a bunch of Crazy Mary's cats, put several in each of three pillow cases, and put the microphone by the sacks full of kitties. No harm was done, the cats sound angry, cuz they were all together in a pillowcase, like humans crammed into an elevator.Later, when we were thinking of a name for the band,I suggested it,because before we put the cats in the bags,I said,"Hey let's build a cat machine"!.Ifigured we could record it for the e.p.,didn't think it would end up being our name. The art above is the earliest logo and poster(dated 10-3-90) available, and was later used on a flyer for a live show. The tapes never really had art,so i will be adding some kind of picture to each release. This is the beginning of a year long series ,where i will post each tape on the date it was recorded,20 years ago.The second tape will be posted on ,October 2nd,2010.For more info, check out the lengthy post"Cat Machine-The Mystery,The History, and Shit",with a career-spanning 10 disc cross-section of their work. Also see our greatest hits compilation, wherein songs that were on our set list, are compiled,"Litterbox".Pleas leave comments, and wish Cat Machine ,a happy anniversary.!!!

Also for anyone out there in a band,or working solo,I am currently working on a tribute to Cat Machine, and would like you or your band's renditions of our songs.Contact me thru the comments box below!!Thanks, G O D

HACKENSACK KILLERS

Nov.9,1991,live at Gramps' house of Cat Machine in the Joelsters room,is the date and location.Band is Me,Joel,Chipmunk, and Ron Bohn.Great songs of murder, killings,Ohio(tequila, sorta),VH,Dio,voodoo, and Cannibal Dope Fiends.I'm from new jersey, and always thought all killers should live in "hack and sack"!Joel takes a shower on tracks 8 and 9,but is back for track 10,the aforementioned,"Cannibal Dope Fiends".Sounds like a fantastic name for a new up and coming punk band!Very much fun here, like nachos and beer, goes down smooth, comes out pasty!
addition to art(and concept execution)by me(funny,huh?)

BOOGIE WOOGIE BRAINWASH

Jan. 18.1992,live in Joel's room at Cat Machine house, this was recorded.Me,Joel,Chipmunk,Billy,Shane, and Francis"Ron"Bohn, were the band.Just a quick little tape to pass time while waiting for anything.Fair to middlin' guitarin' in the grungy punk style ,familiarized by the Ft. Myers contingent. If you doubt anything you hear on this tape, remember, you were there!Has nothing remotely to do with boogie, woogie,or brainwashing!Scientologists are fucking stupid!Kill one every day!

MAGIC NOSE GOBLINS 1

we loved ren and stimpy,so we formed 2 bands called,"magic nose goblins",and distinguish them by calling them 1 or 2.

both are duos, this one is me and joel,in his room,at gramps's(cat machine house).we were supposed to be recording the 4th one fell swoop tape, but the night before chipmunk stole his mom's car,and wrecked it,all highed up. we went downtown, the next morning, where he worked for his mom,and he said,"my life is over",which of course wasn't true.so me and joel went back home and recorded this semi tribute to our fallen bandmate.the last track is funny as we give him a stern talking to.good lyrics, rockin' music, joel sings a few,i sing the rest, and it all turns out like crap, with a cherry on top!forget about the other bands using this name,we were the originals back in 1991.click here for the real magic nose goblins 1:http://www.mediafire.com/file/h4m1ynwkmzf/magic nose goblins 1.zip
