Madrugada: 2011 - 2022

Starting out in the small town of Stokmarknes in the north of Norway, they began under the name

Abbey's Adoption in 1993, and decided to move to Oslo in 1995 to concentrate on their music. Their breakthrough came with the New Depression EP in the spring of 1999. It reached the upper end of the singles charts and gained heavy rotation on Norwegian radio.

Madrugada is a Norwegian alternative rock band formed in the town of Stokmarknes in 1993. Its key

members have included Sivert Høyem (vocals), Robert Burås (guitar), and Frode Jacobsen (bass). After Burås' death on 12 July 2007, Høyem and Jacobsen decided to finish recording what was to be their final album in the original lineup. On 21 January 2008, the band released Madrugada and announced that they would split after one last tour.

Their debut album, Industrial Silence, was released in the fall of 1999. It became a success, selling more and more records as their fan base continued to grow as a result of their relentless touring. Never

limiting themselves to only touring in Norway and Scandinavia, they became a live attraction throughout Europe, playing popular clubs in such cities as Berlin, Paris and Athens. This made them the Norwegian band with the strongest following outside of Norway for years. In June 2018, it was announced that Høyem, Jacobsen, and Lauvland Pettersen had reformed the band for a series of shows in 2019.

MADRUGADA - THE NIGHTLY DISEASE 2001 (DELUXE EDITION) 2011

This album was very eagerly anticipated in Norway, and, of course, in Germany and in Greece, where a large amount of record buyers went crazy for Madrugada after hearing their debut album and

mesmerizing concerts. The most reasonable thing to do would, of course, be to continue with the relatively safe sound of debut Industrial Silence. This is a much better and more consistent album than their debut. For starters, yes, it may well be depression caught on tape, but it sounds real and convincing, unlike much of the material on their debut. The lyrics are more poetic, the songs are much more diverse, and the production is wonderfully dirty, giving the record a rather dangerous aura.

MADRUGADA - GRIT 2002

Grit is the third album by Norwegian band Madrugada. The album saw the band once again taking a

vastly different approach to their previous release featuring a much rawer and at times more experimental sound with Krautrock and garage rock influences taking precedence. The album also featured one of the band's most well known songs in the softly atmospheric ballad "Majesty".

MADRUGADA - MADRUGADA 2008

Madrugada is the fifth studio album by the Norwegian band Madrugada. It was released by the band's own label, Malabar Recording Company (distributed by EMI records), on 21 January 2008. The album was produced by Madrugada and John Agnello who also produced the band's 2001 release The Nightly

Disease as well as My Midnight Creeps' second album Histamin. The album was largely recorded during May 2007 at Water Music Studios, Hoboken, New Jersey and the Magic Shop in New York City. Despite the sudden death of guitarist Robert Burås during the recording of the album, Sivert Høyem and Frode Jacobsen soon decided to continue with the completion of the release. The majority of Burås' guitar parts had been recorded when he died, and the rest of Madrugada stated that finishing the album was like therapy for them.

ROBERT BURAS

On 12 July 2007, Burås was found dead in his apartment by a friend, with his guitar in his hand.

MADRUGADA - CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT 2022

Τhe opening track is a romantic yet melancholic song in which the writer balances between passionate and desperate erruptions, and quieter, yet reassuring confessions of love. The vocals and the melody are

great and the piece is very romantic and heartwarming, in a sense, even though it is quite depressing at the same time. Running From The Love Of Your Life is much darker, the sadness is definitely clearer, and also a great song, taking the powerful lead-in track #1 created. Help Yourself To Me is my personal favourite track in this album. It talks about desperate and true and non-negotiable love.

Stabat Mater surprises the listener with a beautiful voice chorus and a strong refrain. The following tracks do not disappoint, however I think they could have been better. It is also interesting to point out

that the rest of the pieces seem to be moving Madrugada away from the shadows, as Silvert himself pointed out. They also lead them closer to lighter, pop music, which is not bad at all. Dreams at Midnight has a sweet piano intro, two nice guitar solos as well. Empire Blues and The World Could Be Falling Down seem to return to the dark, and they are also excellent Madrugada specimens. Ecstasy, though not that ecstatic, serves as a sweet and peaceful farewell.

All in all, it is a nice and worthwhile listen that I will and already do return to. Some of these tracks

have already entered my Madrugada best of list, which I find incredible. Sure, it is not the old Madrugada, and no one should expect it to be- but it is always nice to see that good music is still being produced, and that we can await for more.

Madrugada: Industrial Silence (1999) (Deluxe Edition 2 CD 2010) + The Deep End (Limited Edition) 2005

Madrugada is a Norwegian alternative rock band formed in the town of Stokmarknes in 1993. The key band members included Sivert Høyem (vocals), Robert Burås (guitar) and Frode Jacobsen (bass).

The group of musicians that would go on to become Madrugada formed in the town of Stokmarknes in 1993 under the name 'Abbeys Adoption'. The band members at this time included Jon Lauvland

Pettersen (drums), Frode Jacobsen (bass), Sivert Høyem (vocals), and Marius 'Wah Wah' Johansen (guitar). In 1995 the band were joined by guitarist Robert Burås and made the decision to move to Oslo where Johansen soon after decided to depart. By 1998 the band had been signed to a six-album deal by Virgin Music Norway and after a chance meeting with Norwegian author and poet Øystein Wingaard Wolf in an Oslo bar, changed their name to Madrugada.

Their debut album Industrial Silence was released on 30 August 1999 to critical acclaim and was followed by the much darker The Nightly Disease in 2001. Both albums were toured extensively around Europe and the band built a dedicated cult following in their native Norway, Germany and especially Greece.

After personal relations became fraught, Lauvland Pettersen left the band in early 2002 and was replaced with Simen Vangen. Soon afterwards, work began on the recording of their third album Grit

which saw the band move towards a more raw and experimental sound. Despite this the album featured perhaps the band's most well known song in the haunting and atmospheric, 'Majesty'. The band followed the album with yet more extensive touring and a largely unsuccessful attempt to break into the UK music scene.

Madrugada finished recording their fourth album The Deep End in late 2004.

After Burås' death on 12 July 2007, Høyem and Jacobsen decided to finish recording what was to be their final album. On 21 January 2008, the band released Madrugada and announced that they would split after one last tour.
They performed their final concert on 15 November 2008.
In June 2018 it was announced that Høyem, Jacobsen and Lauvland Pettersen had reformed the band for a series of shows in 2019.

According to Anders Kaasen of Allmusic, the band was noted for "its bareboned blues-inspired alt-rock" at the end of the 1990s.

INDUSTRIAL SILENCE  1999 (DELUXE EDITION 2010)

Industrial Silence is the debut album by Norwegian alternative Rock band Madrugada. The album contains the singles "Electric", "Higher" and "Beautyproof".

The album kicks off with the majestic "Vocal", with its dense and thick guitar sound and singer Sivert Høyem's distinctive crooning on top of it all. What's really impressive on this album, besides the quality of the songs, is guitarist Robert Burås' creative and versatile playing. He plays everything from country-like slide guitar leads to fierce punk rock power chords, gentle acoustic strumming, and something not unlike flamenco on the apocalyptical "Salt".

Madrugada, although having successful singles and EPs on the Norwegian charts, are most definitely not a singles band. Their strength is not catchy three-minute pop songs; it is their epic, melancholic ballads like "Electric" and "Shine," and intense rockers like "Higher," that make Madrugada stand out.

THE DEEP END  (LIMITED EDITION)  2005

The Deep End is the fourth album by Norwegian rock band Madrugada. Recorded at Sound City studios in Los Angeles and produced by George Drakoulias, It was released on EMI Records in February 2005. Featuring some of their most accessible songs to date, the album cemented the bands' place as one of Norway's most successful of all time.

[AllMusic Review by Anders Kaasen

The Deep End is majestic beast of a record, even by Madrugada's not-too-humble standards. This

album, their fourth since their 1999 debut, managed to establish them as an award-winning, platinum-selling thinking man's arena rock band in their native Norway. Think a rockier, darker version of R.E.M. circa 1992. The first track is the instant classic "The Kids Are on High Street," a slow but grand epic where Sivert Høyem sings in a slightly higher pitch than his usually bassy croon, giving the vocals newfound intensity and urgency. Its huge guitar leads are of the epic Western movie variety, producing an almost cinematic feel. There are also several great soulful ballads here, using Høyem's compelling voice to great effect. The el-piano and slide guitar-driven "Sail Away" is a good example of this; even better is the aptly titled "The Lost Gospel," a slow-burner whose sound is dominated by a beautifully played Hammond organ and tremolo guitar, making it possibly one of Madrugada's finest recorded moments to date.

Unlike its predecessor, 2002's Grit, there are few in-your-face Stooges-style rock tunes on The Deep End, and all for the better, really. The sound is definitely bigger here than on any of their previous albums, with many of the songs featuring Hammond organ, Wurlitzer piano, and pedal steel guitars plus

plenty of guitar tracks by the ever-solid guitar twanger Robert Burås. This is a fine record, a return to form of some sorts, and it could be viewed as a more accessible sibling of 2001's great The Nightly Disease or a successful update of their debut. It's hard to say, but it is definitely a great mix of Madrugada's finest qualities as a band: the darkly epic songs, the tastefully twangy guitar playing, and the commanding vocals of Sivert Høyem. It may well be their crowning moment.]
