Stiff Little Fingers: Original Album Series 2014 Box Set

 

Stiff Little Fingers are a Northern Irish punk rock band from Belfast, Northern Ireland. They formed in 1977 at the height of the Troubles, which informed much of their songwriting. They started out as a

schoolboy band called Highway Star (named after the Deep Purple song), doing rock covers, until they discovered punk. They were the first punk band in Belfast to release a record – the "Suspect Device" single came out on their own independent label, Rigid Digits. Their album Inflammable Material, released in partnership with Rough Trade, became the first independent LP to enter the UK top 20.
               

           
During the first wave of U.K. punk rock, plenty of bands sang about a world full of violence and chaos,

but Stiff Little Fingers didn't have to imagine a dystopian world -- living in Belfast, Northern Ireland at the height of "The Troubles," police brutality and terrorist violence were simply a part of daily life, and the band's music was a powerful response to what they saw, raw-boned rock & roll that balanced rage at a world gone mad against hope for a better day.
                     

     
Stiff Little Fingers were formed in 1977 by singer and guitarist Jake Burns, guitarist Henry Cluney,

bassist Ali McMordie, and drummer Brian Faloon. Burns, Cluney, and Faloon had previously been in a cover band called Highway Star, but when Cluney became a convert to punk rock, Burns and Faloon followed suit, and after recruiting McMordie, they took the name Stiff Little Fingers from a song by the Vibrators.
                

Stiff Little Fingers, especially the lead singer and main songwriter Jake Burns, were heavily influenced

by The Clash. "What the Clash's first album did more than anything else was give me the confidence, through its lyrical subject matter, to realise it was OK to write about my own life and experiences" (Jake Burns).[5] The group started to write songs about growing up in the Troubles in late 1970s Northern Ireland. Among the first Stiff Little Fingers songs were "State of Emergency" and "Breakout".
                

             
After six years and four albums, they split up. They re-formed five years later, in 1987. Despite major

personnel changes, they are still touring and recording. In 2014, the band released their tenth studio album and a world tour followed its release. Jake Burns, the lead singer, is the only member to have been with the band during all its incarnations, but in March 2006, original bass guitarist Ali McMordie rejoined them following the departure of bass player Bruce Foxton after fifteen years.
                  

In 2013, Stiff Little Fingers eagerly began work on a new album, financed by their fans through a

crowdfunding campaign, and in 2014, No Going Back was released. In 2017, Stiff Little Fingers offered evidence of their continued strength as a live act with Best Served Loud, recorded during a 2016 St. Patrick's Day show at the Barrowlands in Glasgow, Scotland.

Inflammable Material is the debut album by the Northern Irish punk band Stiff Little Fingers. Released

in 1979, at the height of The Troubles, most of the album's tracks detail the grim reality of life in Northern Ireland in times of polarisation and conflict, with songs containing themes such as teenage boredom, deprivation, sectarian violence and police brutality.

Nobody's Heroes is the second album by Irish punk rock band Stiff Little Fingers, released in 1980.

3. HANX! 1980    

                  

Hanx! is a live punk album by the band Stiff Little Fingers, released in 1980. Originally intended for

the American market, in order to introduce the band before they toured there, it was subsequently released at a budget price in the UK, for the band were concerned that a lot of their fans would insist on buying the album on import anyway for a higher price. Jake Burns remarks on the sleeve notes for the CD reissue that only "Johnny Was" came from the Rainbow Theatre show, with the remainder recorded at the Aylesbury gig.

4. GO FOR IT 1981

                  

Go for It is the third album by Stiff Little Fingers, released in 1981."Just Fade Away" was released as a

single. Trouser Press wrote that Jake Burns's "voice is smoother and less anguished; the music, while no less energetic or committed, is more diverse and sophisticated."

5. NOW THEN... 1982

             

Now Then... is the fourth album by the Northern Irish band Stiff Little Fingers, released in 1982.[1][2] It was produced by Nick Tauber.[3] Some songs employed a horn section.[4] The band broke up after

the release of the album. Trouser Press wrote that the album "continues the exploration of more accessible musical turf and is full of solid rock songs that pair energy and melody with clever guitar play."
AllMusic called the album an attempt "to become a full-fledged mainstream rock band," writing that "leader Jake Burns had always professed a high regard for Bruce Springsteen and Little Feat as much as his punk elders, and his lyrics here changed in tone rather than theme."

Originally released in 1979, Stiff Little Fingers were Ireland's answer to both the Clash and the Sex Pistols. They had the personal and political stance of the former, and the noisy, pissed off, slash-and-burn musical aesthetic as the latter. Fronted by guitarist and songwriter Jake Burns (he collaborated with journalist Gordon Ogilvie), SLF took off with their two singles "Alternative Ulster," and, for that time, the utterly out of control screaming that was "Suspect Device." These two singles make the purchase price of the album a priority. They represent barely contained youthful anger at social and political mores as righteous, utterly devoid of posturing or falsity and raging to break out. "Alternative Ulster" decries the Irish political sides in the Northern Ireland controversy -- the Royal Ulster Constabulary and the Irish Republican Army -- holding them both accountable for bloodshed and social and economic stasis furthering nothing but their own interests. "Suspect Device" which opens the set, screams at the heart of the conflict, that neither side can be believed as both reduce freedom to a buzzword while wielding guns. Both tracks are calls to arms, but of a different sort -- the arms of dialogue and intelligence in the midst of idiocy and murder. Punk rock never sounded so brutal or positive in one band. There are other fine cuts here as well, such as the Bob Marley cover "Johnny Was," reinvented for the times in Northern Ireland; "Wasted Life," another paean to drop out of a society that breeds death and acquiescence for its own sake, and the scathing indictment of the record company that released the album, "Rough Trade."

Πολιτικό και κοινωνικό, με θέματα πού θίγουν όλες τις πλευρές τής σύγχρονης ζωής, είναι το περιεχόμενο των τραγουδιών των Stiff Little Fingers. "Έχοντας υιοθετήσει το σκληρό, καυστικό και ειρωνικό ύφος των Sex Pistols, οι Fingers εξαπολύουν μια χωρίς προηγούμενο επίθεση, σε κάθε τι άδικο και στραβό της σημερινής κοινωνίας: Την αδικία του Νόμου και τής Τάξης, την κατάσταση στην Ιρλανδία, τα διάφορα πολιτικά συστήματα πού εξαπατούν τον κόσμο:
«Στο όνομα τής ελευθερίας,
μας στερούν την ελευθερία μας
Γιατί δεν φεύγουν όλοι τους
Μάς κάνουν να αισθανόμαστε υποχρεωμένοι
επειδή δήθεν μας έσωσαν απ’ την κόλαση
κι αμέσως μετά μάς βάζαν μέσα εκεί

Φυσικά δεν θα μπορούσαν να γλυτώσουν απ' αυτή την επίθεση και οι μουσικές βιομηχανίες:
«Το αφεντικό μάς είπε ότι θα γινόμασταν αστέρες, ότι θα πηγαίναμε κατ' ευθείαν στο No 1.
Μάς μιλούσε για επιτυχίες, περιοδείες και πολλά χρήματα
Πίστευα κάθε λέξη του
Δεν καταλάβαινα τότε ότι εξαπατηθήκαμε
από τα ψέματα αυτού του αδυσώπητου εμπορίου.
Αφήσαμε τις δουλειές μας γιατί μας
υποσχέθηκαν ότι θα ανεβαίναμε ψηλά
Ανακαλύψαμε όμως ότι είναι ένα πολύ σκληρό εμπόριο»

Λόγια πού μιλάνε μόνα τους. Ρεαλιστικοί και ιδιαίτερα καυστικοί στίχοι αποκαλύπτουν την τύχη ή ατυχία αν θέλετε, πολλών συγκροτημάτων και την ωμή πραγματικότητα πού κρύβεται με επιμέλεια κάτω από το γκλάμορ και τα φανταχτερά πάρτυς των μουσικών αστέρων. Και το επιμύθιο:
«Ή μουσική είναι λεφτά, το κοινό είναι χαζό και δεν έχει καμιά σημασία 

Μας εμπορευόσαστε και υστέρα μας εξαπατάτε»

Όπως οι Sex Pistols και οι Clash καυτηρίασαν πολλές κοινωνικές - πολιτικές καταστάσεις οι Stiff Little Fingers επισημαίνουν την αδικία πού είναι σύμφυτη με το Νόμο:

«Βρισκόμαστε στο κέντρο τής πόλης   
Δεν κάνουμε τίποτα κακό, απλώς σουλατσάρουμε
Ξαφνικά σε στήνουν στον τοίχο
και λεν δυνατά αστεία για να σε ταπεινώσουν
Κοροϊδεύουν την εμφάνιση σου και τα ρούχα πού φοράς
Δεν είναι σωστό να το λες αυτό δικαιοσύνη
Δεν υπάρχει δικαιοσύνη στο Νόμο και στην Τάξη
. . . . .
Είχα ένα φίλο πού τον τσίμπησε ό Νόμος
Τον έριξαν στο πάτωμα και τον μεταχειρίστηκαν
σαν να ήταν τίποτα
Τον κλωτσούσαν στο κεφάλι και γελούσαν όταν έφτυνε αίμα
Χτυπούσαν το πρόσωπο του και τραβούσαν τα μαλλιά του
Δεν είναι σωστό να το λες αυτό Δικαιοσύνη»

Σχηματίστηκαν «για πλάκα» προς το τέλος της δεκαετίας του ' 70 στο Μπέλφαστ, γιατί σύμφωνα με τα λεγόμενα τους... «δεν είχαν τίποτα άλλο να κάνουν». Ακολούθησαν διάφορα γράμματα από μουσικές εταιρείες πού τούς απέρριπταν, ένα αποτυχημένο συμβόλαιο με την Island και μετά ήρθε το άλμπουμ που τους καθιέρωσε, το «Inflammable Material». Τότε άρχισε ουσιαστικά ή καριέρα τους. Το άλμπουμ αυτό γράφτηκε στην Ιρλανδία και το συγκρότημα ήταν τότε βαθιά επηρεασμένο από τον εκεί τρόπο ζωής.
«Ποτέ δεν μάς ρωτούν αν θέλουμε πόλεμο Ποτέ δεν μάς έδωσαν το δικαίωμα να πούμε όχι. Δεν θέλουμε πια πόλεμο. Μη κατηγορείτε αυτόν πού τραβάει τη σκανδάλη. Παίζει μόνο το θανατηφόρο παιγνίδι τους. Ξέρει ότι δεν μπορεί να κάνει αλλιώς γιατί τότε κάποιος άλλος θα τραβήξει την σκανδάλη πάνω του».

Τα τραγούδια τους είναι εμποτισμένα με το παράλογο χιούμορ του πολέμου. Είναι χαρακτηριστικοί οι παρακάτω στίχοι:
«Σε συνάντησα στη χώρα του πουθενά Πιαστήκαμε χέρι-χέρι μέσα από το σύρμα
Ήταν αγάπη μέσα από τις Βόμβες
Αυτό πού μου έδωσες ήταν έρωτας μέσα  απ' τα ηλεκτροφόρα σύρματα».

«Μ' αρέσουν ακόμα αυτά τα τραγούδια» λέει ο φρόντμαν τού συγκροτήματος Jake Burns. «Νιώθω ακόμα το ίδιο πάθος πού είχα όταν τα πρωτογράψαμε, εξακολουθούμε δε να τα παίζουμε στα κονσέρτα. Θα ήταν όμως υποκριτικό να συνεχίσουμε να γράφουμε τέτοια κομμάτια τη στιγμή πού δεν ζούμε πια εκεί (στο Μπέλφαστ)». «Τραγουδούσαμε μόνο για τη ζωή μας, όταν όμως τυχαίνει να ζεις στη Βόρειο ' Ιρλανδία, τότε θεωρείσαι αμέσως πολιτικό πρόσωπο. ' Ο κόσμος φοβάται να βγει έξω τη νύχτα. Δεν υπάρχει χειρότερο πράγμα από τον πόλεμο των νεύρων γιατί εάν, και όταν συμβεί κάτι, γίνεται εντελώς απροσδόκητα. Επειδή όμως είναι απροσδόκητο είναι και πιο τρομακτικό».

«Μια φορά, καθώς περπατούσα σ' ένα κεντρικό δρόμο τού Μπέλφαστ» συνεχίζει ό Burns, «είδα να καίγεται ένα κτίριο κι αμέσως σκέφτηκα «"Ω! μια βόμβα!». Μετά σταμάτησα και ξανασκέφτηκα: «Για στάσου, εδώ καίγεται ένα κτίριο κι αυτό μόνο σκέφτεσαι;».
Αυτός λοιπόν ήταν ο λόγος που έφυγαν απ' την Ιρλανδία; «Ναι» άπαντα  ο μπασίστας Ali McMordie, «σε συνδυασμό με το γεγονός ότι το κάθε τι στην Ιρλανδία σε κρατά εκεί πέρα για πάντα, δηλαδή μεγαλώνεις, παντρεύεσαι, ζεις κοντά στους δικούς σου! Εμείς δεν θέλαμε να κάνουμε μια τέτοια ζωή...».
Ίσως όμως γι' αυτό ό κιθαρίστας Henry Cluney εξακολουθεί να μένει στο Μπέλφαστ. Πολλοί ισχυρίζονται ότι οι Fingers εξακολουθούν να είναι κατά μεγάλο ποσοστό, οι μαριονέττες του δημοσιογράφου της Daily Express, Gordon Ogilvie. του οποίου ή τάση να δίνει στους στίχους μια πολιτική χροιά, άνοιξε το δρόμο στους Undertones για να γίνουν τα τελευταία ταλέντα τής Β. Ιρλανδίας. Στο δεύτερο τους LP όμως, «Νοbody's Heroes», ή πολιτική παίζει ένα περισσότερο δευτερεύοντα ρόλο.
Ο Burns μένει στο Earl's Court μαζί με τον μάνατζερ τους, συνθέτη και προσωπικότητα δημοσιογραφική Gordon Ogilvie πού ή συνεργασία του στην αρχή δεν ήταν και πολύ πετυχημένη. Λέει ό Bums:
«Στην αρχή είμαστε επιφυλακτικοί, κάπως καχύποπτοι, γιατί νομίζαμε ότι θα χρησιμοποιούσε στα τραγούδια φράσεις πολιτικές πού γράφονται στις εφημερίδες - δεν είμαστε πολιτικοί!».
Απαλλαγμένοι πια από το περιβάλλον του Ulster, την πολεμική ατμόσφαιρα και τα ηλεκτροφόρα σύρματα, οι Stiff Littie Fingers του «Nobody's Heroes» είναι περισσότερο «καθαροί», νοικοκυρεμένοι, αποκρυσταλλωμένοι και προσωπικοί.
«Τα τελευταία τραγούδια γράφτηκαν για πράγματα πού είναι πολύ κοντά σε μας», συνεχίζει ό Jake, όπως το «Wail And See» πού αναφέρεται στον τελευταίο μας ντράμερ και περιέχει ορισμένες παρατηρήσεις του πατέρα μου πάνω στο θέμα αυτό. Επίσης αναφέρεται στη μουσική κατάσταση της Βόρειας  Ιρλανδίας, όπου για να πετύχεις, πρέπει τουλάχιστον στην αρχή, να παίζεις country and western τραγούδια ή τα κομμάτια του top-30. «Το αστείο είναι, ότι κάπου στη Βόρειο Ιρλανδία υπάρχει ένα γκρουπ που παίζει το κομμάτι μας «At The Edge» κι ότι ο τύπος πού δεν μας άφηνε να εμφανιστούμε στο κέντρο του πριν δύο χρόνια, τώρα τούς πληρώνει εκατό λίρες τη βραδιά για να παίζουν αυτό το τραγούδι».
Δεν υπάρχει περίπτωση να πέσουν οι S.L.F. στην παγίδα να γράφουν τραγούδια με τα οποία δεν θα έχουν καμιά σχέση. Δίνουν μεγάλη έμφαση στην «πείρα» σαν το βασικό στοιχείο της δημιουργικής δραστηριότητας. Οι Fingers δεν μπορούν να λειτουργήσουν διαφορετικά. Ο Jake Burns μιλά για το κομμάτι «Tin Soldier»: «Γράφτηκε για ένα φίλο μας, τον Alan, πού υπηρετεί στο στρατό. Οτιδήποτε λέγεται μέσα στο τραγούδι είναι πέρα για πέρα αληθινό. Καθίσαμε μαζί ως τις τρεις το πρωί σ’ ένα ξενοδοχείο και μου τα είπε όλα. Για το πώς κατατάχτηκε.( Σ.Σ.: Ή στράτευση στη Μ. Βρετανία δεν είναι υποχρεωτική), τι πράγματα έκανε για να φύγει - μέχρι ασημόχαρτο κατάπιε - για να φανεί σκιά στον πνεύμονα του. Προσποιήθηκε ότι είναι ομοφυλόφιλος και πολλά άλλα».

«Τενεκεδένιε στρατιώτη
Παραιτήθηκες απ' τ' όνομά σου
Τενεκεδένιε στρατιώτη
Δεν έχεις ευκαιρίες για χρήματα ή για δόξα
Τενεκεδένιε στρατιώτη Τώρα ξέρεις την αλήθεια
Τενεκεδένιε στρατιώτη Ξέγραψες τα νιάτα σου...»
Εξ αίτιας του περιεχομένου των τραγουδιών τους, οι Stiff Little Fingers θα μπορούσαν εύκολα να θεωρηθούν σαν πολιτικοκοινωνικοί σταυροφόροι, χάρη στα ακραία ξεσπάσματα τους.
Burns: «Στην πραγματικότητα ποτέ δεν κάναμε σταυροφορία για τίποτα. Αυτό πού κάναμε ήταν απλώς να δείχνουμε στον κόσμο το τι συμβαίνει γύρω του. Δεν έχουμε επηρεάσει ή αλλάξει τίποτα».
«Είμαστε ύποπτα μηχανήματα αν κάνουμε αυτό πού μάς έχουν πει

Ένα όμως ύποπτο μηχάνημα μπορεί να πετύχει κάτι μόνο του
Είμαι ένα ύποπτο μηχάνημα πού ό Στρατός
δεν μπορεί να αφοπλίσει
Θα τιναχτούμε όλοι στα μούτρα τους...»

Stiff Little Fingers : Wasted Life : Live 2007

A taut, explosive Belfast-based punk band, Stiff Little Fingers (named after a Vibrators song) had the dubious distinction of being referred to as "The Irish Clash".


What must have seemed like a compliment at the time did little to help their career, only because it made comparisons between the two bands inevitable. Granted, there were many similarities: both bands debuted playing revved-up late-'70s punk rock, were politically inclined, featured pissed-off lead singers, had a love for reggae, and possessed a near-palpable sense of isolation and desperation.

But as we all know, the Clash offered complexity, panache, and a consistently breathtaking body of work. Stiff Little Fingers, on the other hand, were simply a very good punk rock band. With sandpaper-throated frontman Jake Burns leading the way, SLF did release an auspicious, if badly produced, debut album, Inflammable Material, that featured the band's two best songs, "Alternative Ulster" and "Suspect Device." Both were passionate, ferocious songs dealing with the harsh, deadly realities of growing up in the middle of two decades of Northern Ireland's violence.

These songs thrust SLF into the limelight and got them loads of enthusiastic press, which led to a contract with the decidedly anti-punk Chrysalis label in 1980. After that, SLF released a handful of pretty good records (including a terrific live album, Hanx), but their unregenerate fast and loud punk style started to sound stale.

In 1982, the band released their most non-punk record (Now Then...), which was greeted by general apathy. In a musical rut, dogged by the facile Clash comparisons, and with punk rock running out of steam, Burns pulled the plug on SLF.
