Social Distortion: Mommy's Little Monster 1983 + Prison Bound 1988 + Sex, Love And Rock 'n' Roll 2004

Over the past 30 years, the punk godfathers in the band have all but trademarked their sound, a brand of

hard rockabilly/punk that’s cut with the melodic, road-tested lyrics of frontman Mike Ness. Their searing guitars and a locomotive rhythm section sound as alive today as they did in ’82, as do Ness’ hard-luck tales of love, loss and lessons learned. “The most common thing I hear is, ‘Man, your music got me through some hard times,'” Ness says. “And I just say, ‘Me too.'”

Now in their fourth decade, Ness and Social Distortion have officially done one of the most non-punk things possible: They’ve failed to burn out. Mixing Springsteen’s factory-overalls ethic with Southern

California punk energy and black leather, Social Distortion formed with Ness and high school buddy, the late Dennis Danell, in the late 1970s; the group broke in 1983 with the thrashing plate of punk and displeasure “Mommy’s Little Monster.” Their 1988 follow-up, “Prison Bound,” hinted at a sonic change to come, and by the band’s self-titled 1990 record and 1992’s “Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell,” their sound had solidified into the instantly recognizable brand of rock n’ roll that’s defined them since.

Social Distortion is a mix of potent power, appeal across all age brackets and a genuine satisfaction at

reaching as many people as they have. “I write songs for myself, and I hope that other people will like them too,” Ness says. “I think every record you make is showing people what you’ve learned over the past few years. It’s showing people, ‘This is what I know.'” The band has consistently used as their logo a skeleton holding a cigarette and a martini glass. It was designed by Mackie Osborne, wife of Melvins frontman Buzz Osborne, as part of an invitation to a New Year's Eve party.

Dennis Danell died on February 29, 2000, in his Newport Beach home after apparently suffering a brain aneurysm, leaving Ness as the only remaining original member of the band. There have been

some rumors claiming that the band broke up again, following his death. He was replaced by former U.S. Bombs, Cadillac Tramps and L.A.'s Youth Brigade guitarist Jonny Wickersham, who had previously been Danell's guitar technician. Biscuits also left during that time, and was replaced by Charlie Quintana. After Danell's death, the band continued touring semi-frequently, playing sold-out shows in the Los Angeles area around the New Year for three straight years.

Social Distortion's musical style began as decidedly hardcore punk when the band formed in the late

1970s. They are thought to be one of the pioneering bands of the original Southern California punk rock movement out of Orange County, California, and their style closely associated with the Adolescents, Agent Orange, the Germs, and other bands from that place and time. In the mid-'80s there was a notable change in their style of music – taking more from country music and rock and roll.

Mike Ness admits in the DVD commentary from Another State of Mind that he may have even tried too hard on the Prison Bound album. They did eventually find their niche, and the majority of their albums

from the mid-80s on to the early '90s featured a melodic punk sound that is distinctly – and distinctively – their own. On June 7, 2023, Mike Ness announced that he was diagnosed with stage one tonsil cancer and is expected to make a full recovery from surgery. The band's upcoming tour was postponed as was work on their upcoming studio album. Ness said of the album's delay: "While it will take a little longer, I promise you that it will be delivered and it will exceed your expectations".

SOCIAL DISTORTION - MOMMY'S LITTLE MONSTER 1983

Seminal Orange County punk band Social Distortion's first full-length album Mommy's Little Monster

is the epitome of early-'80s suburban California punk and provided inspiration for many future Californians, including the Offspring and Rancid. Mommy's Little Monster finds the band supplying plenty of attitude and aggression as they rip through nine tracks worth of hard, fast, power chord-filled tracks loaded with snarling anti-establishment lyrics and themes.

I'll be vigilant, I'll be silent
Yes, no one will know
You want something for nothing
A toast on your grave
I just wanna give you the creeps
The creeps
The creeps
The creeps

Run and hide
When I'm on the streets
Your fears and your tears
Will taunt you in your sleep
I just wanna give you the creeps

SOCIAL DISTORTION - PRISON BOUND 1988

After the long layoff that followed their groundbreaking debut, Mommy's Little Monster, Mike Ness

and Social Distortion dropped another seminal punk offering, Prison Bound, in 1988. Slower and more song-driven than their previous disc, this sophomore outing is an absolute triumph. The epic stories of hard living and regret that became Social Distortion's trademark fill Prison Bound's track list. Right off the top, the band adds Ghost Riders-like surf/country guitar riffs to "It's the Law," proclaiming a commitment to their rootsy punk direction.

SOCIAL DISTORTION - SEX, LOVE AND ROCK 'N' ROLL 2004

Eight years separated the release of Social Distortion's  White Light, White Heat, White Trash and their

next studio album, 2004's Sex, Love and Rock 'n' Roll, and a fair amount happened to the band in that time. Most notably, Dennis Danell, who had been the only constant in the band's lineup besides leader Mike Ness, died in 2001 at the age of 39, and on a pair of solo albums Ness began digging deeper into the roots music that had long informed his style. After confronting the grief of losing one of his best friends and exploring the less muscular side of his musical personality, Sex, Love and Rock 'n' Roll

makes it clear Ness and his bandmates were ready to turn up the amps and make some noise, but while musically this is firmly in the So-Cal punk mode of their best work, lyrically this music reflects the mind of a more mature and thoughtful Mike Ness. Sex, Love and Rock 'n' Roll shows that Social Distortion have held onto what made them great while growing and changing in the best ways, and the result is one of the best albums this band has made to date.

Social Ditortion : Somewhere Between Heaven And Hell 1992

Social Distortion is an American punk rock band formed in 1978 in Fullerton, California. The band currently consists of Mike Ness (lead vocals, lead guitar), Jonny Wickersham (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Brent Harding (bass, backing vocals), David Hidalgo, Jr. (drums), and David Kalish (keys).

Social Distortion went on a temporary hiatus in the mid-1980s, due to frontman Ness' drug addiction and troubles with the law which resulted in extended stints in various rehabilitation centers that lasted for two years. Since its inception, the band lineup has been a virtual revolving-door of talent with many members coming and going – Ness has been the only constant member. After 37 years of performing, Social Distortion continues to tour and record music.

To date, Social Distortion has released seven full-length studio albums, two compilations, one live album, and two DVDs.
Many of their later albums, including their second gold record "Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell" (1992), were also well received. They are considered one of the best-selling punk rock bands, with more than three million albums sold worldwide.

The fourth album, Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell, was released in 1992. The album included two hit singles—"Bad Luck", and "When She Begins". Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell surpassed all their previous albums in popularity.

Social Distortion : Social Distortion 1990

Social Distortion is the eponymous third studio album by the American punk rock band Social Distortion, released on March 27, 1990 through Epic Records, their first recording on that label. The album furthered the rockabilly, blues and country music experimentation of their previous album with songs like "Drug Train" and the radio hit "Ball and Chain".

The focus on the alternative rock scene helped bring attention to Social Distortion. The singles "Story of My Life" and "Ball and Chain" were able to find an audience on alternative rock radio and on MTV. Social Distortion was one of the band's most successful albums to date, and their first to enter the Billboard 200; the release peaked at number 128.

The album has been certified gold by the RIAA in the United States. By 1996, Social Distortion had sold at least 250,000 copies, becoming the band's second best-selling album in the United States (their next album Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell sold 296,000 copies).

With Prison Bound, Social Distortion began to metamorphasize from a rather ordinary L.A. hardcore band into a roots rock band willing to make with more than their share of the attitude, and this process continued on their self-titled third album (which was also their major-label debut).

Musically, Mike Ness and company had learned to split the difference between rockabilly and Ramones-style punk, not unlike fellow L.A. vets X, and if Ness couldn't sing or write with the skill or the resonance of John Doe, "Story of My Life" and "It Coulda Been Me" sound a lot more personal and deeply felt than anything on Mommy's Little Monster, and "Ball and Chain" and "So Far Away" prove he could crank out a respectable honky tonk number if he put his mind to it.
Thanks to Epic's sponsorship, the group had more time and money at their disposal for Social Distortion than on their previous albums, and producer Dave Jerden made the most of it; Mike Ness and Dennis Danell's guitars sound lean, sharp, and powerful;

Ness's vocals are better controlled than ever before; and Christopher Reece's drums have a tight snap that suits both the thrashier numbers as well as the slower, blusier tunes.

BALL  AND  CHAIN   Lyrics

Well it's been ten years and a thousand tears
And look at the mess I'm in
A broken nose and a broken heart,
An empty bottle of gin
Well I sit and I pray
In my broken down Chevrolet
While I'm singin' to myself
There's got to be another way

(Chorus:)
Take away, take away
Take away this ball and chain
Well I'm lonely and I'm tired
And I can't take any more pain
Take away, take away
Never to return again
Take away, take away
Take away
Take away this ball and chain

Well I've searched and I've searched
To find the perfect life
A brand new car and a brand new suit
I even got me a little wife
But wherever I have gone
I was sure to find myself there
You can run all your life
But not go anywhere

(Chorus:)
Take away, take away
Take away this ball and chain

Well I'll pass the bar on the way
To my dingy hotel room
I spent all my money
I've been drinkin' since half past noon
Well I'll wake there in the mornin'
Or maybe in the county jail
Times are hard getting harder
I'm born to lose and destined to fail

(Chorus:)
Take away, take away
Take away this ball and chain

DRUG  TRAIN  Lyrics

It'll take you as high as the heavens
It'll take you to the depths of hell
It'll make you friends, it'll take your friends
Who will never live to tell

(Chorus:)
Drug train, drug train

The train's first stop is pleasure,
The scond stop is fun
But in a jail cell baby or a hospital bed
You'll need hope 'cuz you ain't got none

(Chorus:)
Drug train, drug train

The train passes through the graveyard
May the loved ones rest in peace
For the last stop baby is a violent crash
And hard times they never cease

(Chorus:)
Drug train, drug train

DOWN ON THE WORLD AGAIN  Lyrics

This ain't the way it's supposed to be
There's a dark cloud following me,
I'm disillusioned I'm down on the world again

There's movies going on in my head
And all I can see is the color red.
I'm relentless I'm down on the world again

Give me tomorrow's broken dreams now
I'm feeling like a loaded gun

There's a world of guilt written on my face
I'm feeling ashamed for the human race,
I've been forsaken I'm down on the world again

Well , I feel so alone in this crowd
Thoughts of despair are getting loud
I'm disrespected I'm down on the world again

Love and tolerance have abandoned me
And I feel the gloom hovering over me,
I'm resentful I'm down on the world again

Give me tomorrow's broken dreams now
I'm feeling like a loaded gun

Give me tomorrow's holy schemes now so hopeless
When there's no place else to run.

Well I tried to play for the higher stakes
You wont let me forget my mistakes
I'm unforgiven and I'm down on the world again

This ain't the way its supposed to be, there's a dark cloud following me
I'm distorted
And I'm down on the world again

Του χρόνου που θα φέρουν καινούργια φορτία θα ξαναπάω πάλι .

DOWN HERE WITH THE REST OF US
You work hard now
To put the food on the table
You're working for the men
Who don't even know your name
That's the way that it goes
When you're down here with the rest of us
You might lose now
Your beautiful children
Your happy home, yeah
And your beautiful wife
That's the way that it goes
When you're down here with the rest of us

You'll suffer hard now
As you bury
Your loved ones
You'll suffer hard now
When you lose your best friend
That's the way that it goes
When you're down here with the rest of us
That's the way that it goes
And I know how you feel

No ones immune now
To a world of problems
No ones exempt now
From a world of pain
That's the way that it goes
When you're down here with the rest of us

I try hard now
To do the right thing
Yet I wonder
Why I still do what's wrong
That's the way that it goes
When you're down here with the rest of us
That's the way that it goes
And I know how you feel
