Cockney Rebel : The Human Menagerie 1973

Fronted by ex-journalist Steve Harley (born Steven Nice), Cockney Rebel first stirred in mid-1973 with the release of the epochal single "Sebastian." With a lineup selected as much for its classical versatility as its rock punch, but with little care for the orchestral conceits which marred other bands of that ilk, Cockney Rebel debuted with one of the most widely acclaimed albums of the year.

The Human Menagerie succeeded in appearing both epic and concise at the same time and, while neither album nor single charted, both paved the way for what even cynics knew was an imminent breakthrough.

Reading the group's press, it was often difficult to determine where Harley's ambition ended and the journalist's praise began, but that, too, added to the buzz which surrounded them.

So much fevered activity finally paid off in spring 1974 with the release of "Judy Teen," the group's second single and an immediate Top Ten hit. Cockney Rebel followed through with landmark album, The Psychomodo, a gallant and extraordinarily adventurous album which promptly proved another massive success.

SEBASTIAN

SEBASTIAN  LYRICS

Radiate simply, the candle is burning, so low for me
Generate me limply, can't seem to place your name, cherie
To rearrange all these thoughts in a moment is suicide
Come to a strange place, we'll talk over old times we never smile

Somebody called me Sebastian
Somebody called me Sebastian
Work out a rhyme, toss me the time, lay me, you're mine
And we all know, oh yeah!

Your Persian eyes sparkle; your lips, ruby blue, never speak a sound
And you, oh so gay, with Parisian demands, you can run-around
And your view of society screws up my mind like you'll never know
Lead me away, come inside, see my mind in kaleidoscope

Somebody called me Sebastian
Somebody called me Sebastian
Mangle my mind, love me sublime, do it in style,
So we all know, oh yeah!

You're not gonna run, babe, we only just begun, babe, to compromise
Slagged in a Bowery saloon, love's a story we'll serialize

Pale angel face; green eye-shadow, the glitter is outasight
No courtesan could begin to decipher your beam of light

Somebody called me Sebastian
Somebody called me Sebastian
Dance on my heart, laugh, swoop and dart, la-di-di-da,
Now we all know you, yeah!

Steve Harley & The Cockney Rebel : Love's a Prima Donna 1976 FLAC & mp3

Love's a Prima Donna is an album by Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, released in October 1976. It was recorded at Abbey Road Studios between June and September 1976. The album reached #28 in the UK Albums Chart in November 1976.

Allmusic journalist, Donald A. Guarisco notes, "Although he created a decadent glam rocker image through early albums like "The Human Menagerie" and "The Psychomodo", Harley soon revealed a romantic heart beating beneath all the artsy sleaze on singles like "Judy Teen" and "Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)".

This 1976 album, the last studio outing Harley would record under the Cockney Rebel banner, allowed him to give full vent to his romantic thoughts via "(I Believe) Love's a Prima Donna" and "(Love) Compared With You", a delicately orchestrated love ballad that manages to be touching and heartfelt without lapsing into sappy sentimentality.

(Love) Compared With You

I been trying to write this line
But the years've gone by in no time
And you know that it's not easy for a boy in love
But I had to find a clue
And it could only come from you
Like a waterfall you tingle me with your love

Chorus:

And you know that since you loved me I have everything
And you know that since you loved me it's been easy

All the things that I been through
Don't mean a thing compared with you
You can give me life forever in a moment
You carry me like a child and you're a goddess when I'm wild
When I'm desperate in black you are golden

And I confess... since you loved me I had everything
I confess that since you loved me it's been easy

And you know that since you loved me I have everything
And you know that since you loved me it's been easy

I Love you . I Love you .
I'm in love with you .
I Love you . I Love you .
I'm in love with you .

Cockney Rebel : The Psychomodo 1974

Steve Harley (born Stephen Malcolm Ronald Nice, Deptford, London, 27 February 1951) , grew up in London's New Cross area and attended the school Haberdashers' Aske's Hatcham College . His musical career began in the late 1960s when he was busking (with John Crocker) and performing his own songs , some of which were later recorded by him and the band . The original Cockney Rebel was formed when Harley hooked up with his former folk music partner , John Crocker (fiddle / mandolin / guitar) in 1972 . They auditioned drummer Stuart Elliott , bassist Paul Jeffreys , and keyboardist Milton Reame-James . They were signed to EMI after playing just five gigs . Their first single "Sebastian", a soaring rock epic ballad , was an immediate success in Europe , though failed to score in the UK Singles Chart . Their debut album , The Human Menagerie , was released in 1973 to critical acclaim , and is still felt by many fans to be their best .

Harley managed to irritate a significant segment of the music press with his self-aggrandisement , even as the music itself was getting rave reviews and gaining a wide audience . It was becoming clear that Harley regarded the band as little more than accompaniment to his own agenda , and already there were signs that things would not last , despite having a big hit with their second single , "Judy Teen" . There then followed the album The Psychomodo , an adventurous and ambitious production which showed that there was real talent in the group . A second single from the album , "Mr. Soft" , was also a big hit .

CAVALIERS

Cavalier was the name used by Parliamentarians for a Royalist supporter of King Charles I during the English Civil War (1642–1651) . Prince Rupert , commander of much of Charles I's cavalry , is often considered an archetypical Cavalier .

( These are the lyrics , sung by Steve Harley . The lyrics in the inside album or the Internet are not complete the same sometimes )

Make mine old time , or i’il spit in your eye
It’s better than lying , anytime . . .
I’m horrified to step outside , I’m trying
very hard to keep up my guard
Everything’s becoming drag , we’d best be off
escape this bad- could be very sad
Misery coming over me , I’m thinking about
going blind and don’t want to see .

Shift around this one-song town
like a sparrow with a broken wing -feeling blue!!!
Terrified to step outside , it’s so easy
to make a suicide come true
Masturbation-getting off ; you can scoff your ideals offer nothing new !
I’m getting ready to run and hide ,
looking for a suitable bitch to crucify .

We’re all beginqing to
testify , testify-it’s getting fierce
We’re all beginning to testify ,
Testify , to be cavaliers
How do you feel now you’ve testified?

Love to have God next to me with his
hands around my throat in harmony
Take away the silver tray , fetch me water
God , give me strength , I’m in pain
Seeing, blow-job blues and boogaloos
Ten little niggers hooked on absinthe and daffodils
Telling tales of white gardinia ,
Honky-tonking all the love that’s in ya!

We’re all beginqing to
Testify , testify-it’s getting fierce
We’re all beginning to testify ,
Testify , to be cavaliers
How does it feel now you’ve testified?

Long-tailed coat , a silly joke ; they drink
like men then see them choke on coca-cola
Morgue-like lips and waitress tips and you
shuffle around on your sabrina hips
Oh ! Make mine old time or I’ll spit in your eye
It’s better than lying-anytime
I'm horrified to step outside , trying very
hard to keep up my guard .

We’re all beginqing to
Testify , testify-it’s getting fierce
We’re all beginning to testify ,
Testify , to be cavaliers
How does it feel now you’ve testified ?
