Holly Golightly: 7 Albums 1995 - 2003

Holly Golightly, started her musical career as a founder member of all girl garage band Thee Headcoatees, a Billy Childish / Thee Headcoats splinter group in 1991. After four years as a

Headcoatee she also found time to release a debut solo record, The Good Things, in 1995. Where the Headcoatees sound was a blend of girl group sounds and three-chord garage-rock with all the original songs coming from the pen of Billy Childish, Holly’s solo sound is more a blend of pre-rock electric blues, folk rock, and less frantic rock & roll. In addition to Holly’s original songs, she’s also covered a wide range of artists including Willie Dixon, Ike Turner, Lee Hazelwood, Wreckless Eric, and Bill Withers.

She is one of the most interesting and diverse artists to come out of the Billy Childish school and is

certainly one of the better singer/songwriters of the post-grunge era who seems to get better with every album.
Since her debut in 1995, Holly has been very prolific, releasing twelve solo albums, one with Billy Childish (In Blood), one with Dan Melchior (Desperate Little Town), and eight albums alongside The Brokeoffs plus loads of singles for a wide variety of labels. She has toured the world many times, the US being a particular favourite as well as Australia & Europe.

Holly’s sound has remained remarkably consistent throughout, but each record has a quality that sets it apart from the others. In 1999 she released an album, In Blood, with her friend Billy Childish, on which

the two sound like a scuffed-up British version of Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood. Over the years Holly has been guest vocalist on various other band projects, including live with Mudhoney, on a couple of Greenhornes releases, and on a couple of Rocket From The Crypt tracks including their hit single ‘Lipstick’. She’s been busy living and working at her home in the US with her animals as well as heading back to Europe for a few tours in the 2020s and finally got back in the studio while in London at the end of 2024 to record ten new original songs for her brand-new album Look Like Trouble.

01. HOLLY GOLIGHTLY - THE GOOD THINGS 1995

Holly Golightly's solo debut is quite a departure from her usual gig as a member of the garage-rocking,

Billy Childish-sponsored group Thee Headcoatees. But for a couple of tracks, Golightly and Thee Headcoatees drummer Bruce Brand create a low-key and introspective musical mood. The overall sound is still raw and live, but the tempos and performances are relaxed. Good Things is a strong debut that definitely points the way to good things to come from Holly Golightly.

02. HOLLY GOLIGHTLY - THE MAIN ATTRACTION 1996

By the time of her second solo release -- issued the same year Holly Golightly hung up her Thee

Headcoatees go-go boots -- she had already established a separate identity from that lively garage rock combo. Sure, you'll still recognize that unmistakably cool, acerbic voice, but like her debut, The Good Things, Main Attraction falls into another genre altogether. It's eclectic, to be sure, but slick or boring -- never. Main Attraction was reissued by the U.K.'s Damaged Goods in 2001.

03. HOLLY GOLIGHTLY - LAUGH IT UP! 1996

With the help of a circle of like-minded U.K. roots rockers and the recording facilities of the legendary

Toerag Studios in London, Golightly whipped up a great collection of covers for Laugh It All Up! Hitting on everything from blues and country traditionals to newer folks like Ray Davies and Van McCoy, Golightly and company strike the right balance between reverence and playful reinterpretation, never letting down the side.

04. HOLLY GOLIGHTLY - PAINTED ON 1997

Golightly's 1997 album happily kept her own playful vibe going just as it should, combining home and Toerag Studio recordings into another stew of bluesy garage rock and R&B sass. Handling production and

keeping everything sounding just the way she wants, Golightly comes up with some fun and atmospheric touches, like her self-duet on "Indeed You Do," switching between direct mic singing and from-one-room-over compression. Individual kudos: Brand's swinging drums on the romantic warning sign "A Length of Pipe," Melchoir's own songwriting contribution to the album, Mat Radford's "whistlin'" on the agreeably twangy "One Kiss," and the group instrumental "Snake Eyed," with fine slide guitar from Ed Deegan.

05. HOLLY GOLIGHTLY - SERIAL GIRLFRIEND 1998

Recorded while still a member of Thee Headcoatees (she would leave the following year), Holly Golightly's sixth solo release is another winner from start to finish. If the production is a little rougher and

more garagey than on subsequent efforts, her earthy charm, sardonic -- sometimes feisty -- attitude, and sure way with a catchy chorus are in full effect. For anyone who's ever wondered what the early Beatles or Rolling Stones might have sounded like with a female front person, Serial Girlfriend -- in which drummer Bruce Brand channels Charlie Watts (circa "Get off of My Cloud") for "Down Down Down" -- is the highly enjoyable answer.

06. HOLLY GOLIGHTLY - GOD DON'T LIKE IT 2000

Don’t get me wrong — it isn’t Motown-style sweetness and harmony that this former member of garage-

gal outfit Thee Headcoatees is dishing out. Rather, her sound is closer to the tough-chick ’tude and reverb-soaked pop of classic distaff combos such as The Shangri-Las or Ronettes. That is, when Holly isn’t wandering around in the trailer park, lazily crooning trashy countrybilly ballads in a voice that switches between the world-weary snot of a modern-day punkette and the fiery sass of Wanda Jackson. God may not dig it, but you gotta figure the devil is grooving to it right now.

07. HOLLY GOLIGHTLY - TRULY SHE IS NONE OTHER 2003

Holly Golightly's Truly She Is None Other is another fine slice of low-key bluesy garage pop from the

former Headcoatee and current White Stripes crony. Unlike that band, however, Golightly doesn't have much truck for noise and clatter; she is more apt to use honey and guile to capture her listeners. Truly She Is None Other is one of Golightly's best albums; packed with great songs and performances, it re-establishes Golightly as a beacon of grace and restraint in a world sadly bereft of both.

The Vietnam Veterans: 4 Albums 1983 - 2009

Garage / Psychedelic Rock band from Burgundy, France. The group was founded in 1982 with its first lineup including Mark Enbatta (vocals, guitar), Lucas Trouble (keyboard), Greg Jones (guitar),

Angelo Jupp (bass), Steve Palermo (drums) and D.D Richardson (harmonica).
The name that was they chose for the band referred to men who given a lot and got nothing in return.  Enbatta grew up in France's Basque region and started playing guitar in the late '60's, mostly doing R&B (Otis Redding, James Brown) and the usual British invasion stuff. In one of his bands, he met Jones, who played in a band with his own brother. In the late '70's, Enbatta started writing his own material (some of which appeared on the first Veterans LP) and played mostly on the street and at political demonstrations but also with some other groups.

Lucas Trouble was also playing in several bands throughout the '70's, the last of which was Tango Lüger. All of his bands played dark stuff, in the style of Joy Division. Jupp played with a band called the Snipers,

who by then had some records out and was crossing paths with other future Vet members at clubs. The first-ever Vet recording was a cassette with a few songs, but it didn't make much of any impact. Their first real album, On The Right Track Now (1983), was recorded in a small expiremental studio called "a l'ouest de la Grosne" where the progressive rock band Gong was also recording. Three different drummers each played on the album and were also at the live shows that followed it but when they found Martin Joyce, he became their permanent skins man.

The record itself was recorded and mixed in only three days. That gave the album a pretty low sound quality (like hearing a radio show made by the neighbor's ten year old twins on a double-cassette recorder

from 1972) but that doesn't changes the fact that this is one of the best albums ever recorded from the post-psychedelic garage scene of the 80's, especially in Europe. Their second album, Crawfish For The Notary (1984), was recorded in the same studio as On The Right Track now, but it was done in three weeks so it had a much better sound quality to it. It also contains some of the bands' best songs: "Children Eyes," "What Are You Hiding," "I Give You My Life" and more.

Peas (and the next two albums) was released by a Dutch friend of Mark named Hans Kesteloo. He also purchased the rights for their first two albums after their first label (Lolita) stole some of their royalties in

order to compensate for the label losing money on another band which Mark brought to them (the Inmates). During this time, the band got quite a reputation on the European scene and because of their growing fame, they almost never played in small places- at a Frankfurt show, they had audience of about 2000 people. In 1986, the band released Ancient Times, a well-produced album which contained one of the band's more stirring masterpieces- "Curanderos," among other brilliant songs such as "Tower Of Babel","Wrinkle Drawer" and "Crooked Dealers" (the first three also appeared on the Green Peas).

Catfish Eyes And Tales was released in 1987 and provide to be the last Vets album. It's a special album which contains a piece that, in the absence of better name, I'll have to describe as "progressive rock"

though it's not what you think of as prog rock. The piece, "Medley," was built out of three connected songs: "Distant Drums," "Sea Horse" and a cover of the late David McWilliams's song "The Days Of Pearly Spencer." After the album was released though, things were not going so well for the group. They decided to disbanded but the real reason was because it was something the members agreed to early on- initially, they had decided to only record a few albums. Since they are still good friends today, it probably was a good decision. The band's last gig was in Bochum, Germany- people came from everywhere (England, Holland, France), knowing it was their last show.

01. THE VIETNAM VETERANS - ON THE RIGHT TRACK NOW 1983 + CRAWFISH FOR THE NOTARY 1984

On The Right Track Now / Crawfish For The Notary
is a 2008 compilation album by the French psychedelic garage band The Vietnam Veterans, reissuing their first two landmark 1980s albums. It showcases their 60s-influenced garage sound and is considered a staple of European psychedelic punk, blending raw energy with poetic, anarchist themes.

(The Further Adventures Of The Vietnam Veterans)

After releasing their compilation album The Days of Pearly Spencer in 1988, they broke up, and some members moved on to other projects. In 2005 The Vietnam Veterans released a single called "I Give You My Life / Children Eyes", and in 2009 a full-length album called Strange Girl (As The Gitanes). The band The Gitanes was one of the projects a few of the former Vets had, and the name is now added to The Vietnam Veterans name, calling it "The Vietnam Veterans (a.k.a. The Gitanes)". Mark Enbatta died 9. 9. 2021.
