Wayne Kramer (April 30, 1948 – February 2, 2024) was an American guitarist, singer, songwriter, producer, and film and television composer.
                

Kramer came to prominence as a teenager in 1967 as a co-founder of the Detroit rock group MC5, a

group known for their powerful live performances and radical left-wing political stand. The MC5 broke up amid government harassment, poverty, and drug abuse. For Kramer, this led to several fallow years as he battled drug addiction before returning to an active recording and performing schedule in the 1990s.
                    

A member of the legendary MC5, guitarist and proto-punk icon Wayne Kramer returned to prominence

during the 1990s as a solo performer. Born April 30, 1948 in Detroit, he co-founded the MC5 in 1965, teaming with the great Fred "Sonic" Smith to create the band's incendiary twin-guitar attack. Their first album, 1969's Kick Out the Jams, remains one of the most influential records of the era, its raw, visceral sound laying the groundwork for the rise of punk a decade later.
             

Alongside their Detroit-area brethren the Stooges, MC5 essentially laid the foundations for the

emergence of punk; deafeningly loud and uncompromisingly intense, the group's politics were ultimately as crucial as their music, their revolutionary sloganeering and anti-establishment outrage crystallizing the counterculture movement at its most volatile and threatening.
                  

Under the guidance of Svengali John Sinclair (the infamous founder of the radical White Panther

Party), MC5 celebrated the holy trinity of sex, drugs, and rock & roll, their incendiary live sets offering a defiantly bacchanalian counterpoint to the peace-and-love reveries of their hippie contemporaries.
                  

In 1967, the MC5 were designated “House Band” at Detroit's famous Grande Ballroom and were

managed by John Sinclair, a radical left-wing writer and co-founder of the White Panther Party, until 1969 when Sinclair was sentenced to nine and a half years in the Michigan Department of Corrections for giving two joints to an undercover police woman. Sinclair became a mentor to then 20-year-old Kramer and introduced him to the world of free jazz, poetry, and progressive political awareness. They remained close friends.
                          

The MC5 recorded three major label albums including 1969’s Kick Out The Jams on Elektra records.

1971’s Back in the USA and 1972’s High Time both for Atlantic Records. The MC5 toured the USA extensively and ultimately faced insurmountable challenges both from being banned from the radio and government police agencies for their militant political stance. Unable to tour or sell records and after a last-ditch effort by Ronan O'Rahilly that included a move to London, England, by 1972, the original group disbanded.
                   

The band barreled furiously through a brief initial run before disintegrating in the early '70s, leaving

behind a legacy of controversy and three electrifying albums that would set the course for punk, hard rock, and all stripes of heavy music that followed.
                  

Kramer died of pancreatic cancer on February 2, 2024, at the age of 75. His death was announced by

the official social media accounts for the MC5, with a statement reading: "Wayne S. Kramer 'PEACE BE WITH YOU' April 30, 1948 – February 2, 2024."
                  

Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, who cited Kramer as a major influence, wrote: "His band

the MC5 basically invented punk rock music... Wayne came through personal trials of fire with drugs and jail time and emerged a transformed soul who went on to save countless lives through his tireless acts of service."  
                   

Rolling Stone ranked him among the "100 Greatest Guitarists of all Time".

Johnny Thunders : D.T.K. Live at the Speakeasy (D.T.K. stands for "down to kill") 1982

Recorded live at the Speakeasy in London on March 15, 1977, the imaginatively titled D.T.K. Live at the Speakeasy (D.T.K. stands for "down to kill") captures Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers at their raging, sneering best.

This is one of the performances that made the Heartbreakers such darlings in the U.K., and it's not hard to see why. Reprising most of the songs off their debut, L.A.M.F., Thunders and crew (guitarist Walter Lure, bassist Billy Rath, and drummer Jerry Nolan) tear into these songs with a snot-nosed abandon that made even the Sex Pistols stand up and take notice. Although the performances here are relatively straightforward readings of the album tracks, they bristle with a rabies-like intensity that the studio versions just can't match.

Tunes like "Can't Keep My Eyes on You," "Born to Lose," "Get Off the Phone," and "All by Myself" are played so viciously that it's almost a miracle that they come off sounding as melodic and rhythmic as they do. Much of the credit here has go to Rath and Nolan, who ground the grooves so defiantly that nothing can pry them loose.

What really puts Live at the Speakeasy over the top, though, is Thunders' between-song banter. Inciting the somewhat lackadaisical crowd with a barrage of drunken insults and tasteless asides, he adds a certain street thug joie de vivre to the proceedings.

Live at the Speakeasy is a jewel in a catalog jammed with poorly recorded, abysmal live performances, and is a wild reminder of just how formidable the Heartbreakers could be on a good night.

Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers : L . A . Mother Fuckers . The lost ' 77 Mixes

Johnny Thunders, born John Anthony Genzale, Jr. (July 15, 1952 - April 23, 1991), was an Italian American rock and roll/punk rock guitarist, singer and songwriter.

Though he disapproved of the term "punk rock", Thunders is widely recognized as a foundational influence on the genre, particularly for his penetrating guitar sound. IGN.com listed him as one of "Punk Rock's 10 Mightiest Guitar Gods".

He came to prominence in the early '70s as a member of the New York Dolls, and afterwards became a familiar figure in the New York punk scene, both with The Heartbreakers and as a solo artist.

Thunders struggled with drug and alcohol addiction and died under mysterious circumstances.
