The Cramps: Discography 1978 - 1990

The Cramps were an American rock band formed in 1976 and active until 2009. Their lineup rotated

frequently during their existence, with the husband-and-wife duo of singer Lux Interior and guitarist Poison Ivy the only ever-present members. The band is credited as progenitors of the psychobilly subgenre, fusing elements of punk rock with rockabilly. The addition of guitarist Bryan Gregory and drummer Pam Balam resulted in the first complete lineup in April 1976. They released their debut album Songs the Lord Taught Us in 1980. The band split after the death of lead singer Interior in 2009.

The Cramps are a truly American creation much in the manner of the Cadillac, the White Castle hamburger, the Fender Stratocaster, and Jayne Mansfield. Often imitated, but never with the same

psychic resonance as the original, the Cramps celebrate all that is dirty and gaudy with a perverse joy that draws in listeners with its fleshy decadence, not unlike an enchanted gingerbread house on the Las Vegas strip. The entire psychobilly scene would be unthinkable without them, and their prescient celebration of the echoey menace of first-generation rock & roll had a primal (if little acknowledged) influence on the rockabilly revival and the later roots rock movement.

The saga of the Cramps begins in 1972 in Sacramento, CA, when LSD enthusiast and Alice Cooper fan Lux Interior (Born Erick Lee Purkhiser) picked up a hitchhiker, a woman with a highly evolved

rock & roll fashion sense named Kristy Mariana Wallace (Poison Ivy).
The two quickly took note of one another, but major sparks didn't began to fly until a few weeks later, when they discovered they were both enrolled in a course on "Art and Shamanism" at Sacramento City College. These two lovebirds were soon sharing both an apartment and their collective enthusiasm for the stranger and more obscure sounds of rock's first era, as well as the more flamboyant music of the day.

Their passion for music led them to the conclusion that they should form a band, and Kristy picked up a guitar and adopted the stage name Poison Ivy Rorschach, while future vocalist Erick became Lux Interior, after short spells as Raven Beauty and Vip Vop. Ivy and Lux hit the road for Ohio.

They moved to Akron, Ohio, and then to New York in 1975, soon entering into CBGB's early punk scene with other emerging acts like Suicide, the Ramones, Patti Smith, Television, Blondie, Talking Heads, Mink DeVille, and fellow Ohio transplants Dead Boys. The lineup in 1976 was Poison Ivy Rorschach, Lux Interior, Bryan Gregory (guitar), and his sister Pam "Balam" (drums). In a short period of time, the Cramps changed drummers twice; Miriam Linna (later of Nervus Rex, the Zantees, and the A-Bones and co-owner of Norton Records) replaced Pam Balam, and Nick Knox (formerly with the Electric Eels) replaced Linna in September 1977.

In 1979, Miles Copeland signed the band to his fledgling new wave label I.R.S. Records, and their first 12" release was an EP featuring the material from their self-released singles, entitled Gravest Hits. That same year, the band traveled to Europe for the first time, playing as opening act for the Police and

stealing the show from the peroxide-addled pop stars many nights. The Cramps returned to Memphis with Chilton to record their first full-length album, 1980's masterful Songs the Lord Taught Us, but what should have been a triumphant U.S. tour following its release was scuttled when Gregory unceremoniously quit the band by leaving unannounced with a van full of their equipment. Lux, Ivy, and Nick opted to move the band to Hollywood, CA, and recruited Gun Club guitarist Kid Congo Powers to take over as second guitarist in time to record their second long-player, Psychedelic Jungle.

In 1983 they recorded Smell of Female live at New York's Peppermint Lounge; Kid Congo Powers subsequently departed. Mike Metoff of the Pagans (cousin of Nick Knox) was the final second guitarist – albeit only live – of the Cramps' pre-bass era. In 1985 the Cramps recorded a one-off track for

the horror movie The Return of the Living Dead called "Surfin' Dead", on which Ivy played bass as well as guitar. With the release of 1986's A Date With Elvis, the Cramps permanently added a bass guitar to the mix,
but had trouble finding a suitable player, so Ivy temporarily filled in as the band's bassist. Their popularity in the UK was at its peak as evidenced by the six nights at Hammersmith in London, three at the Odeon (as well as many other sell out dates throughout the UK) and then three at the Palais when they returned from the continent.

It was not until 1986 that the Cramps found a suitable permanent bass player: Candy del Mar (of Satan's Cheerleaders), who made her recorded debut on the raw live album

RockinnReelininAucklandNewZealandxxx.
This was followed by the studio album Stay Sick! in 1990, which spent one week at No. 62 in the UK Albums Chart in February of that year. Candy del Mar and Knox left the band in 1991. The Cramps went on to record more albums and singles through the 1990s, for various labels. Lux Interior died at 4:30 a.m. on February 4, 2009, at Glendale Memorial Hospital in California. The cause of death was aortic dissection.

The Cramps' music is played at varying tempos, with a minimal drumkit. An integral part of the early Cramps sound was dual guitars, without a bassist. The focus of their songs' lyrical content and

their image was camp humor, sexual double-entendre, and retro horror/sci-fi b-movie iconography. Their sound was heavily influenced by early rockabilly, such as Jerry Lott AKA The Phantom, whose 1958 single 'Love Me' they covered, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll like Link Wray and Hasil Adkins, 1960s surf music acts such as the Ventures and Dick Dale, 1960s garage rock artists like the Standells, the Trashmen, the Green Fuz and the Sonics.

01.  THE CRAMPS - SONGS THE LORD TAUGHT US 1980

Continuing the spooked-out and raging snarls of their Gravest Hits EP, the Cramps once again worked

with Alex Chilton on the group's full-album debut, Songs the Lord Taught Us.
The jacket reads "file under: sacred music," but only if one's definition includes the holy love of rockabilly sex-stomp, something which the Cramps fulfill in spades. Having spent Gravest Hits mostly doing revamps of older material, the foursome tackled a slew of originals like "The Mad Daddy" and "TV Set" this time around,

creating one of the few neo-rockabilly records worthy of the name. Years later Songs still drips with threat and desire both, testament to both the band's worth and Chilton's just-right production. "Garbageman" surfaced as a single in some areas, a wise choice given the at-once catchy roll of the song and downright frightening guitar snarls, especially on the solo.

Here, Kid Congo Powers and Ivy form just as fine a team as she and Gregory did on earlier releases, and if things aren't always as flat-out fried as on Gravest Hits and Songs, the same atmosphere of swampy, trashy, rockabilly-into-voodoo ramalama reigns supreme. The song titles alone

show the band hasn't really changed its sights any: the opening two cuts are covers, "Green Fuz" and "Goo Goo Muck," while originals include "Caveman," "Can't Find My Mind," and the brilliant "The Natives Are Restless." Then there's "Don't Eat Stuff Off the Sidewalk," which almost sounds worthy of a Frank Zappa freakout (at least lyrically). Other legendary tracks like "Primitive" and "Green Door" get the Cramps makeover this time out, with the proper mix of respect and hot-wired energy, while "The Crusher" sounds like Interior's on the verge of going completely insane, and Ivy is still one of the best guitarists around, her snarling reverb worth a thousand fret-shredders.

03.  THE CRAMPS - SMELL OF FEMALE 1983

One gets the feeling from the title and cover art alone that if the Cramps could have released this

live document in Glorious Smell-o-rama they would have jumped at the chance.
Even without it one can almost sense the whiffs of perspiration and energy the group was cooking up; recorded at New York's Peppermint Lounge with Powers on guitar, the quartet slams out a then mostly entirely new set of songs with, as expected, appropriate covers as needed. The wonderfully profane take on Hasil Adkins' "She Said" surfaces here, with Interior sounding like he's about to die more than once.

04.  THE CRAMPS - A DATE WITH ELVIS 1986

After Psychedelic Jungle, the Cramps experienced personnel and record label difficulties; they would not release another studio album until this one, four years later. Gone here are the tinny sound quality and

horror-flick-based lyrics of prior releases, replaced by clearer sonics and an often hilarious obsession with sex.
There are numerous sly references in the verses to high and low cultural icons, including "Shake it one time for me". Most of the songs here are in various rockabilly-derived styles featuring either garage rock fuzz or Duane Eddy twanging guitar from Poison Ivy. Vocalist Lux Interior is in excellent form here, exhibiting a fair bit of variety within his usual 1950s-derived approach. This rollicking and energetic platter in particular is the equal of any in their canon, and an essential listen.

05.  THE CRAMPS - ROCKINNREELININAUCKLANDNEWZEALANDXX 1987

From 1986 to 1990, the Cramps eschewed studio work in favor of extensive touring; this album

documents a live show from August 1986. The sound quality is crude at best, but the Cramps' music and attitude are just as crude, so the already wild performances are actually somewhat enhanced.
The repertoire relies heavily on A Date With Elvis and also features covers of "Heartbreak Hotel" and "Do the Clam."

06.  THE CRAMPS - STAY SICK! 1990

"I dig that god damn rock & roll/The kind of stuff that don't save souls." Less than three minutes

into 1990's Stay Sick!, the Cramps had summed up their entire aesthetic in a mere 16 words, and even if Lux Interior hadn't bothered to wail that deathless phrase, the buzzy, reverb-soaked report of Poison Ivy Rorschach's guitar and the primal earthquake stomp of Nick Knox's drums reminded us this band liked its music dirty, both sonically and thematically.
If 1986's A Date with Elvis was an impressive return to form after a long recording layoff, 1990's Stay Sick! was in some respects an even

more powerful example of the Cramps' singular oozing psychobilly madness; with Candy del Mar, they had their best fourth wheel since Bryan Gregory left the band, a bassist whose solid, ferocious low-end thump made more room for Ivy's feral guitar work, and the band rarely sounded tighter or more effective than it did here.

Various: Enjoy The Greeks ! 2004

Not much is known internationally when it comes to Greek rock music. Aphrodites Child had a UK/European hit in '68 with ballad "Rain And Tears" and released cult prog album "666" (Uncut's 15th weirdest album of all time). But there's also a burgeoning indie scene that's worth your attention as well as one of the best Garage/Psych scenes in the world.

Most of these bands didn't get the chance to record in a proper studio and put an album out, but in the next decade there were many releases from small Greek indie labels. Thessaloniki's On Stage Records was one of them, and with this compilation they make a great job of presenting some of the scene's top bands circa 2004.

THE BULLETS

The Bullets were formed in the eastern side of Thessaloniki in 1988. It was a time when rockabilly was very popular all over Europe. Although the rockabilly revival movement, which started in the 70s, lasted until the late 90s, the Bullets have managed to be active up until today. During all these years the band has performed live countless times, creating wild and memorable moments for their fans. The Bullets' music style is without any doubt… rock'n'roll. Obviously their major influences are the trash/desperate rockabilly of the 50s and the primitive surf sounds of the 60s. Other influences include doo-wop, garage and british teddy boy rock. Their philosophy is based on having fun, love for life and on being optimistic. Certainly these are the reasons why they will keep on being together for a very long time!

THE FRANTIC V

The Frantic Five were formed in 1994. They immediately became active and started performing. Imagine in the Kurt Kobain and techno era 5 guys in white shirts and black ties performing real unadulterated 60's garage and eurobeat!!! In 1995, Jens Lindberg came to visit and they recorded 2 tracks lost in oblivion and 10 tracks as a rehearsal. A superb gig followed supporting the Fuzztones and Mark Lindsay during the Greek Psychorama Festival. An invitation to Italy's Festival Beat rushed the boys over the Adriatic Sea establishing their sound abroad. In 2003, the boys gathered in the studio to record their first 12" of sonic pleasure! "A long play with the Frantic V" was what came out (ON STAGE RECORDS). Next year, they invaded Germany in late October for Germans to enjoy some frantic tracks in full volume, screams farfisa and fuzz. For the time being, the boys are recording their second long player. As for future plans, who knows ? The frantic gang might invade your town any moment now, so beware!

THE DUCKY BOYZ

The Ducky Boyz is a psychobilly , surf-punk band originated in Athens - Greece , which first played in 2002. After (too)many lives-parties and two demos , they released their first album "No Regrets" in 2005 with the precious help of the fully indipedent Greek label Blind Bastard Records . After the world had know them better and with some changes in the members (they changes their drummer) , they brought out earlier this year (2008) a 7" single with the name "Near Death Experience" again in Blind Bastard . This single was produced in Greece and in Germany by "Mad Dog Recordings" from Paul Fenech personally (yes , the all powerfull Meteors leader...).

THE TEARDROPS

Θανάσης Ξανθάκος
(Thanasis Xanthakos) Musician/composer from Greece.
Owner of "Plan 59" record store, based in Exarchia, Athens.

THE OVERTONES

It is rumoured that this mysterious surf outfit was formed in Mars! Possibly the cover artwork and the song titles led many to such a conclusion! As the back cover reveals, it is about "an official Frantic V conspiracy!" In fact, THE OVERTONES are 3 of the 5 members of the mighty garage group, The Frantic V, in disguise! Besides their devotion to garage beat, they deliver a couple of cool surfin' tunes. Their first long awaited release is a killer 7" single of spine-tingling instrumentals!

ALEXANDROS PERROS AND THE LONE STARS

Lone stars were created in 1987 with the original composition of Alexandros Perros, Costas Hasiotis and Giotis Bengalas on drums. Their name comes from the descriptive name of the state of Texas. The musical idiom they represent is garage rock n roll. In this compilation he offers us two 50's style surf/rockabilly sides.
Original line-up:
Αλέξανδρος Πέρρος / Alexandros Perros (Voice, Guitar)
Κώστας Χασιώτης / Kostas Hasiotis (Bass)
Γιώτης Μπάγκαλας / Yiotis Bagalas (Drums)

STRANGE BREW
The female-fronted Strange Brew offer us a garage 60's style.

THE HYDES

The Hydes create a pure Garage/Punk N'Roll band circa '92.In 1995 they release "Big City" for the "NOT SO PRETTY" compilation (a tribute to the PRETTY THINGS) on Corduroy Records (AUS) featuring CHESTERFIELD  KINGS, THANES, BREADMAKERS, HEADCOATEES.In 1997 they release the first 7" EP "HARD LOVIN" on SWALLOW IT ALL RECORDS (GR). The next year a 7" SINGLE (OUT TONITE) on CORDUROY again. They participate in a few compilations with covers of the ONLY ONES (Flaming Torch), MARTHA AND THE VANDELLAS (Heatwave),Q65 (Sour Wine), MASTER'S APPRENTICES (Wars Or Hands Of Time). Last Corduroy release comes with the tribute to the Rolling Stones "STANDING IN THE SHADOWS" in 2001.The Hydes play "Standing In The Shadow".
On Stage Cd Collection "Enjoy The Greeks!" [2004] includes "Hitwave" by The Hydes.

MARRY ME MARY
Marry Me Mary 60's-style garage pop.

THE TEDDY BOYS FROM THE CRYPT

Garage Rock band formed in December 1996 in Athens, Greece. In February 2005 they supported 'The Sound Explosion' at their reunion gig in Athens. They also performed along with 'The Psykicks', 'The Frantic V', 'The 700 Machines' & 'The Ducky Boyz'. In February 2005 they supported 'The Sound Explosion' at their reunion gig in Athens. They also performed along with 'The Psykicks', 'The Frantic V', 'The 700 Machines' & 'The Ducky Boyz'.
El Baron (vocals, bass), T.O.L.I.S. (guitar), Chris Organ Grinder (Farfisa organ, backing vocals), T-Ace Machine (drums, tambourine, backing vocals).

THE PSYKICKS

Their influences are mainly 70’s punk & 60’s garage, punk and surf (plus their 80’s –90’s revival). They have done many gigs in Athens and Thessaloniki along with other bands, such as 'The Frantic V', 'The Ducky Boyz', 'The Bullets', 'The 700 Machines', 'Yesterday's Thoughts', 'The Meanie Geanies', 'The Teardrops', 'The Teddy Boys From The Crypt', 'Screaming Fly' & 'Duck’n’Psycho'.
In October 2002 they supported 'The Flaming Stars' at their concert at Gagarin 205 (Athens). In spring 2003 they suported, together with 'The Ducky Boyz',the 'The Cynics' concert at Gagarin 205 (Athens). 5 STAR HOTEL

Greek brit-pop band (originally as 5*Hotel) based in Thessaloniki, Greece.
The band first met in the University of Birmingham in 2001. After they have witnessed numerous gigs, they decided to form a group and just after a while they started composing originals and recording demos in various studios. From their very first live appearances, although totally unknown to the most, they stirred the public with their fresh and exciting British pop sound. From then on, they managed to draw the attention of a noteworthy following that gradually was getting increased. They were opening acts for artists such as Six By Seven, Saint Etienne and Ladytron.
The band returned to Greece where they kept playing and rehearsing their own originals in a pop vein with guitars and synths. Their sound was characterized by the velvet and dreamy vocals, which are perfectly bond with the rest of the instrumentation. The band delivered a personal oriented sound with a few hints close to Pulp kind of brit-pop and the best period of The Smiths.
The lineup included:
George Begas - vocals
