The Knight, crestfallen, awakens in a dim, murky cell. Another day akin myriad more like it confined to this fetid pit with naught but the rats and insects as nourishment, and as company. It has been eons since he has heard the voice of another soul, smelled anything but the vile putrescence in the air, yet this would be the last day of its kind.
Gently slips The Knight from this life into oblivion.
A thousand lifetimes pass as The Knight floats down a river of endless darkness yet beneath the surface there glimmers the fractured hilt of The Knight’s once-noble sword, its blade impaled into the veil beneath. Plunging deep beneath the tumultuous waters The Knight reaches a trembling hand to seize the hilt, though as his gloved hand takes the sword into his hand he is violently thrust through the veil and back to the world of the living.
Though the world of the living may as well be another world of ceaseless death. The world The Knight once knew is no longer here, instead he stands upon a desolate wasteland, the land rent from eons of conflict, and the buildings reduced to nought but rubble.
The Knight wanders this forsaken land for days on end, whilst life has survived, it is naught but subsistence. There is no prospect for prosperity, no joy to be found. This is a wretched world condemned to misery.
There are those who would seek change, who would turn to the heretical arts, be it to exact vengeance, to sow chaos, to enforce order, or merely enact action. The Knight encountered one such person; A Swarmseer, a fanatic and zealot who seeks to usher in a new age of strength. This Swarmseer takes a keen interest in The Knight and implores him to meet where the Swarmseer and her ilk meet.
In the darkest hours The Knight is stolen away to the site of the ritual. The melody upon the breeze is beguiling, it holds sway over The Knight’s psyche and he is powerless to resist its fell charms. Embroiled in a profound trance, the Swarmseer and her adherents approach the culmination of their vile ceremony. As this zenith is attained, the Swarmseer’s spells twists The Knight’s form beyond recognition, shearing his skull, squeezing out his eyes, his flesh sundered, and his bones pulverised by an unseen malice.
With great violence The Knight experiences his second death.
From the fractured and tattered form of The Knight is born a new horror unto the world, the Broodmother of the Swarm, a towering deity to vermin and decay. With four colossal horns crowning her monstrous countenance, she emerges from this crucible of torment a vision of ghastly beauty.
Newly born to this world, the Broodmother seeks to carve a swath in carnage, a war upon the living, to extinguish every life in the realm.
