Toys of Times Lost to History

Doug: Today I am waxing nostalgic for all those great toys I had when I was a child. There's no timestamp on today's memories. Instead, I've just thrown together a ton of Internet image grabs of stuff I had when but a wee lad. Enjoy! And please -- share some of your own reminiscences.

Who's the Best... Action Figure Line?

Doug: Marvel Legends, GI Joe (both sizes), Captain Action, Major Matt Mason, Big Jim, Secret Wars, Megos, Super Powers -- we've talked about all or almost all of these individually. But, which line is your overall favorite for play or collectibility?

G.I. Joe: 12" fighting man or 4" American hero?

Karen: Today we look at an American classic, G.I Joe. But wait -which version rules? The original 12" moveable fighting man, or the 3 3/4" real American Hero?

Karen: As a child of the 60s and 70s, I have to give my respects to the original. Why, he's worth three of those puny, gaudy latecomers! The original Joe had all the coolest gear. And in the 70s, he figured out how to grow a beard! He was a bad mutha...

Karen: But I know some of you later Bronze Age babies love your tiny titans. And certainly that line from the 80s was colorful and varied. Of course, they also had their own cartoon.

Karen: So sound off: support your favorite plastic soldier!

What Was the Coolest Toy You Ever Got for Christmas?

Doug: When I was 6-years old, I was joyfully overwhelmed to find the GI Joe action playset "Secret of the Mummy's Tomb" that included a big yellow ATV, a helicopter with working rotary blades, and a mummy's sarcophagus. Not much better than that, my friends. I played and played and played some more with those toys -- of course, this was back in the days when GI Joe's were 12" tall, with that "real" hair. All was just perfect... until warmer weather came and I took that helicopter outside, pushed the rotary button as hard and fast as I could, and then let that bird fly! Straight into the ground. Broke part of the landing skids. Aw, crap. But it was still so cool!

Doug: How about you? What was your "best Christmas"?
