We're Back!

Doug: Welcome back to this space! It has been a looooonnnnggg time since we've been together and Karen and I are excited to shepherd our community through a week of new content. In the midst of our time together we will be honored to present our entry in the coming 2-part Super Blog Team-Up. Here's a preview of the week ahead -
  • Tuesday: Catching up with Karen
  • Wednesday: What's Doug been reading?
  • Thursday: Super Blog Team-Up! Former BAB staff writers Martinex1 and Redartz will also be participating over at their place, Back in the Bronze Age.
  • Friday: Sharing thoughts on the recent spate of Marvel Cinematic Universe flicks
After that we'll again be on hiatus until part two of this summer's SBTU event. Join us back here on July 19th!

Doug: Although the focus of this blog (and at times of the partnership between Karen and I) has largely shifted to the Twitterverse (we've added over 1700 followers since closing shop here), the spirit of the BAB remains across the interwebs. We regularly discuss Bronze Age/pop culture issues, tweet out cool artwork, and hopefully keep our work here alive by sharing links to material throughout our archive.

Karen: You've done a fantastic job on Twitter - I sort of see it as a metamorphosis! While you draw on the blog for some tweets, there's a lot of fresh material too. It all works to keep that community aspect of BAB alive, which was our original goal.

Doug: We hope you'll find this to be a reunion of sorts, with most of the old gang re-assembling for a little LCS-on-a-Wednesday conversation. I don't know how different I am from when I left you 19 months ago - I can report that our youngest son will be married two weeks from now, and in preparation for looking good as the mother and father of the groom my wife and I have each taken off some serious weight. Other than that, I think you'll find me the same guy you knew before!

Karen: That's impressive, but I don't think we'll have any problems recognizing you, pal. As for me, I feel like a lot of things in my orbit have changed, but for the most part, the basics of life remain the same. Although I have a new activity that I'll talk about on Tuesday that I hope all of you may also participate in. I won't say any more than that.

Doug: So enough about us (although more to follow in the next two days). What's everyone else been up to?

#MyFirstAvengersLineUp

https://graphicpolicy.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/image0012.jpg
Doug: Here's a fun drill for Marvelites of all ages. About a week and a half ago one of our Twitter friends was asking folks to mark time by events within the pages of Earth's Mightiest Heroes -- specifically, the Avengers line-up when you started reading the book. So many thanks to Greg A. (@garaujo1) for today's post idea.

Doug: For this guy, my entry to the Avengers on an ongoing basis was around #119-120: the adventure against the Collector in Rutland, Vermont and then on into the Zodiac arc. You can see from the cover below (Jazzy Johnny Romita had a hand in that one, ya think?) that our Avengers at the time were Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, the Black Panther, the Vision, the Scarlet Witch, and Mantis and the Swordsman. That's a great line-up, certainly one of the best in the history of the team.

Karen: That's a powerhouse line-up, and very similar to my first team of Assemblers, from way back in issue #92. Anyone who's been around here for more than a few months knows that I came aboard the Marvel train with the Kree-Skrull War and never shut up about how great it is. But my first exposure to the Avengers had a team divided: there was the active team composed of the later generations of Avengers, namely the Scarlet Witch, her brother Quicksilver, their comrade Clint Barton, once Hawkeye, now playing the role of Goliath, and the Vision. The Big Three -Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor -show up at the end of the issue to disband the team -although they were really Skrulls posing as those heroes. But by the next issue the real McCoys would be back, along with a brief visit from Ant-Man. So I always think of the Big Three, plus the Vision, and Wanda, as mainstays.

Martinex1: As I've mentioned before, at a young age my cousin gave me a box of various comics and my favorites amongst those were a smattering of Avengers books ranging intermittently from Avengers #45 to Avengers #91. So I received in that gift a pretty broad view of the team's assembled heroes. My favorite though was the team gathered in the battle with Grandmaster and Kang in issues #69 to #71. The final page of that arc had a marvelous Sal Buscema pin-up that defined the team for me; it included the big three plus Vision, Clint-Goliath, Yellowjacket, Wasp, Black Knight, and the Black Panther. When I purchased my first Avengers comic with my own money, it was at the start of the Nefaria Saga at issue #164. Amazingly the team had not changed much despite the big gap in issues. The main difference was that the Scarlet Witch and the Beast were in, but Clint and the Black Knight were absent. So those were essentially my Avengers! I do have to say though that I thoroughly enjoyed the second kooky quartet that Karen mentioned of Goliath, Vision, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver; their battle with Brainchild in issue #86 remains one of my guilty pleasures in following the team.

Redartz:
My introductory Avengers lineup is quite similar to Doug's, as we joined the Assemblers during the same era. Specifically, I began with issue # 127, the crossover with the Inhumans and the Fantastic Four. Actually, I bought the issue because of the Fantastic Four appearance, and was immediately hooked (and why not -- what a cast of characters, and Ultron to boot!). So that would be Thor, Iron Man, Wanda and the Vision, Mantis and the Swordsman. Honorable mention goes to the Beast, who joined shortly thereafter, and became my favorite Avenger.

#Inktober - Joe Kubert's Jungle Lord

Doug: We're now 60% through our celebration of #Inktober. So far we've featured a couple of the masters inking themselves in John Buscema and John Romita. Today we finish that trend with a look at Joe Kubert's DC Comics revival of Tarzan of the Apes. While you won't find a lot of the pencil lines that were featured in the previous two posts, I hope you'll still appreciate the natural beauty of Kubert's work. There's a reason he's considered among the best ever.

Next weekend we'll look at some Spider-Man pages penciled by Romita, Gil Kane, and Mike Zeck, all under the influence of various inkers. After that? I got nothin'... yet.

#Inktober -- Jazzy Johnny Romita

Doug: Welcome back to another weekend -- and who doesn't like that? This time around we're featuring the art of John Romita, Sr. as part of the Twitterverse's month-long celebration called #Inktober. Last weekend we presented some pencil and ink sketches by Big John Buscema, and if he's the Michelangelo of comics, then Romita is certainly some other Renaissance luminary. I am using John Romita's The Amazing Spider-Man Artist's Edition, Volume 2 from IDW for the pretty pictures. In all cases, the Jazzy one inked himself (albeit with Tony Mortellaro credited for an assist here and there). In some cases you'll note that these books are so big that I could not fit my entire selection on the scanner bed. Sit back and enjoy.

#Inktober -- Big John Buscema

Doug: As the new month dawned, I noticed lots of tweets and retweets with the hashtag #inktober. Artists displayed their wares, and enthusiasts posted inked pages or sketches. It's been fun to see the variety of work. So, ever the thief of ideas, I thought we'd spend our weekends this month admiring the work of some of our favorite artists. To kick it off, who better than the "Michelangelo of Comics" himself, Big John Buscema? Enjoy the master.
