Sebastian Bohren / Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra / Andrew Litton MENDELSSOHN - BRITTEN Violin Concertos
Sebastian Bohren constantly continues on his way – and does it well. He
carefully chooses his broad, varied repertoire and masterfully brings it
to sound. Whether solo, in a chamber ensemble or with a large
orchestra, whether musical rarities or established milestones: his
playing arouses the enthusiasm of audiences and critics alike!
On the new album, Sebastian Bohren now devotes himself to violin
concertos by two great composers: one of them is a repertoire piece par
excellence, whereas the other, despite the undoubted genius of its
creator, is rarely heard. Together with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic
Orchestra conducted by Andrew Litton, Sebastian Bohren has recorded
violin concertos by Felix Mendelssohn and Benjamin Britten;
Tchaikovsky’s graceful Sérénade mélancolique completes the program.

Isabelle van Keulen / NDR Radiophilharmonie SERGEI PROKOFIEV Violin Concerto No. 1 WILLIAM WALTON Viola Concerto RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS The Lark Ascending
Here is a disc whose contents seem odd as it couples the violin concerto
of a (still) Russian composer to the viola concerto of an English
one. Instead, the coupling is very clever since Prokofiev’s First Violin
Concerto, whose premiere was in 1923 (while the composer was still
living in France, a few years before his return to Soviet Union) served
as a much-admired model to Walton’s Viola Concerto, whose first
performance was played by Paul Hindemith in 1929. The similarities
between the two works go beyond the three-movements structure
slow-quick-slow and concern themes, accompaniments and the rondo form of
the virtuoso central Scherzo.
The smart idea of such unusual coupling came to one of the few great
living violinists who can really play the viola with equal skill:
Isabelle van Keulen. This glorious disc is crowned by the orchestrated
version of Vaughan Williams’ masterpiece The Lark Ascending.
One of German radio best orchestras, the NDR Radiophilharmonie, is conducted by Andrew Manze (Prokofiev), Keri-Lynn Wilson (Walton) and Andrew Litton (Vaughan Williams).

Tamsin Waley-Cohen / BBC Symphony Orchestra / Andrew Litton ROY HARRIS - JOHN ADAMS Violin Concertos
Tamsin Waley-Cohen has recorded a new disc of Roy Harris and John Adams
Violin Concertos with the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andrew
Litton. The recording will be released on Signum Records on CD and download on 30 September. This continues her series of
concerto recordings on Signum, with these two contrasting works by
American composers.
Already considered by many to be a modern classic, John Adams 1993
Violin Concerto was described by the composer as having a ‘hypermelody’,
in which the soloist plays longs phrases without stop for the duration
of the 35 minute piece. Although composed in 1949, the first performance
of Roy Harris’s Violin Concerto didn’t occur until 1984. Since then it
has been championed for its “luminous orchestration and exalted tone”.
“Roy Harris may be the most all-American composer you have never heard
of...Waley-Cohen handles [the Adams's] gruelling solo part with
athleticism and conviction, and both pieces benefit from the punchy
playing of the BBC Symphony Orchestra and insightful conducting of
Andrew Litton.” (The Guardian)
