Micro Modern British Battlegroup Complete

Wow... these were quick to paint!

I finished up the the last elements of my Modern British Combat Command box from GHQ models - the Warrior IFVs and AS-90 self-propelled artillery.

The latest: AS-90s and Warrior IFVs.

A battery of AS-90 155mm self-propelled guns.

Two reinforced companies of Warrior IFVs

This is the complete battlegroup (so far...). My plan it to use these with Cold War Commander. The battlegroup includes an armoured squadron of Challenger 2 tanks, two reinforced companies of mechanized infantry mounted in Warrior IFVs, and a battery of self-propelled artillery (each element represents roughly a platoon/troop-sized unit).

Currently I am thinking this will be organized as follows:

1x CO (the FV439 signals vehicle - Command Value 10) - 120 points
3x HQ (Two small foot elements and the FV436 with a Cymbeline mortar locating radar - Command Value 9) - @60 = 180 points
4x Tank Units (Challenger 2) @235 = 940
8x IFV Units (Warrior) @75 = 600
8x Infantry Unit (Regulars) @30 = 240
8x Infantry Upgrade (LAW-80) @ 50 = 400
3x Artillery Unit (155mm AS-90) @80 = 240

This comes in at 2720 points.

I might need to change a few things around when I re-read the rules - not totally sure if the FV436 with a Cymbeline mortar locating radar should be an HQ for the Artillery or an FAO...? Do I need both? At some point I'd like to add a few other elements - some FAOs and FACs (not sure if those should be in Land Rovers or Sultan CVR(T)s?) and some sort of recce elements (Scimitars?) and maybe some sort of air support for those FACs to call in (Harrier?).

Suggestions?

What else does this force need?

I picked up two potential opposing forces - a Soviet battlegroup armed with T-80s and BMP-2s and a Chinese PLA battle group armed with T-98 MBTs and Type 89 IFVs. I imagine using it against the former in a later Cold-War-Turns-Hot scenarios in Europe. Later because the Challenger didn't com into service until the later 90s. I guess we could assume the Soviet army cracked down a little harder in 89 and prevented German reunification and/or the 91 soup d'etat by soviet hardliners was more successful - which precipitated a further decline in east-west relations. Or maybe something along the line of what went down in the original Twilight: 2000 (although we'd have to assume that the Challenger 2s were rushed into production a little earlier to be online before the limited nuclear exchange that effectively ended civilization in that game).

Against the Chinese...? Well the T-98 wasn't ready until 1999 and never actually entered service with the Chinese PLA!? (Seems an odd choice to include in a Chinese PLA Combat Team box...?) A small number were made ready for trials in 96, so maybe we could say they were rushed into production a little early to forcibly take back Hong Kong when handover negotiations broke down and the British decided they were unwilling to give up their investment in the colony...? Or perhaps coming to the aid of another former colony/Commonwealth partner when the Chinese decided to invade...? I'm not sure who...? India...? Myanmar..? I don't know... it all seems like a bit of a stretch.

I also have a USMC task force I'm working on... could they be a potential opponent. Maybe the the British decide to Make America Great (Britain) Again...?! Or perhaps the US invades the island to stop them from taking all their jobs...? Maybe I'm getting a bit silly... but then, in today's political climate, nothing really seems THAT farfetched anymore!

If I were to do another British force I'd probably like to do a force for the early 80s with Chieftains and FV-432s and such - or perhaps an airmobile force (helicopters, lots of infantry). Or just a load of infantry with SLRs and stuff that could be used for the Falklands. This is what I probably would have preferred... but they didn't have these when I was at the Sentry Box a couple weeks ago... But now that I HAVE some micro armour, I might get inspired to expand possibilities...

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

I have both the USMC and Soviet battlegroups on the workbench and and tempted to hammer those out quickly - so I can get playing CWC again... but I'm also feeling like I should get back to other projects that have fallen by the wayside - the Terminators for Space Hulk, John's Orcs for Shadespire,   the Knight(s), the Tallarn (and Valhallans), other assorted 40K stuff for role-playing, etc...

It's also be nice to get in some miniatures games (and thus be posting game reports!) - I'd like to get in some more games of 40K, but also more of The Pikeman's Lament, and I've also had a hankering to get Dragon Rampant and Song of Blades and Heroes on the table again - as well as possibly FUTURE War Commander - to get some used out of all the Epic 40K stuff I've been working on over the last few years...

More Modern Micro British - Challenger 2 and HQ

Wow these paint up fast! I should have the Warrior IFVs done in no time - then it's on to the Soviets!

All miniatures are from GHQ models.

The latest - four Challenger 2 and a couple of signals vehicles for CO/HQ elements.

This is an FV436 with a Cymbeline mortar locating radar. It will serve as one of my HQs (or possibly the CO?).

This is an FV439 signals vehicle - also to see service as an HQ or CO element.

I guess the CO is supposed to look different from the HQ models... Perhaps I'll have to find something else.

The boxed set also included for TUMs (Truck Utility Medium?). Not sure what I'm going to do with those just yet. Maybe I'll base them individually as other regular elements and call them Transportation Units.

Finally the Challenger 2s. These represent the four troops of an armoured squadron.

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

I should probably finish up the the Warrior IFVs to ferry around the Infantry in the next day or two. Then I'll likely crank out the Soviet T-80s and BMP-2s so I can have a game with these...

Then it's back to other projects that have been on hold.

At some point I'm going to have to make some micro-scale terrain - preferably stuff that can be used both for modern games in Europe and the Far East as well as for 20-30000 years in the future with all my Epic stuff...

Modern Micro British

During the vacation over the last few weeks I had the opportunity to visit the Sentry Box in Calgary. Apart from two, out-or-print, individual 40K figures, a pack of Reaper Bones Familiars, and some GF9 "Snow" the bulk of my purchases were GHQ micro armour.

I picked up four battlegroup boxes (though one is for a friend) and a couple packs of individual infantry. While I have been planning to get back into Cold War gaming with micro armour for some time, this was a bit of an impulse purchase. I have LOADS of stuff to work on for this year. I was thinking I'd maybe pick some stuff up next year... but then I was there... and they had these... and... well... you know how it goes.

Also I was originally thinking I'd go with mid-80s Cold-War-Goes-Hot in Europe forces - soviets with T-72s and BMPs and an opposing force of Canadians with Leopard I and M113s... What I've ended up doing here is picking up a few forces for a slightly later conflict...

They DID have a box of Soviets with T-72s and BMP-1s, but as the opposing forces I had to chose from were a little more recent, I opted for the T-80/BMP-2 set.

I tried to pick up four battlegroups that could potentially all fight each other... well... Maybe not the British and USMC... but you never know...?

The British and USMC could fight the Soviets in a early 90s (Extended) Cold War Goes Hot scenario - where the Soviet state didn't collapse and the Berlin Wall didn't come down in 1989. The Soviets could fight the Chinese in a border conflict. The British could fight the Chinese over Hong Kong? The USMC could face the Chinese in Taiwan - or a number of other potential conflict zones in the Southwest Pacific region... Or maybe even in a Chinese invasion of Hawaii...?

I'd STILL like to put together forces of Canadians and Soviets circa 1985, but the will have to wait...

for now, I've started painting a few of the British. So far I've finished up the infantry (the vehicles are all primed and ready to go as well!)

Micro British infantry armed with SA-80 assault rifles.

A closer look. I did try to do a bit of camouflage colours to make it look like they were in Temperate DPM. I think the box set was really meant for use in Iraq or Afghanistan or other potential Middle East war zones... but I'm just not that interested in playing those...

Another close up look.

Cold War Commander, which I plan to use with these, is supposed to be scalable. Elements bases could represent either platoons/troops or squads and individual vehicles. I find it a bit abstract for representing individual vehicles. So these will most often be used as platoons - making this a force of approximately two companies.

The two smaller stands could be headquarters or artillery forward observers or forward air controllers.

It's been a while since I played, but it seems that combat is worked out between individual bases. But the tactic in the game, if I recall, was instead of each platoon firing at a single platoon opposite (as platoons opposing each other would) groups of platoons would concentrate their fire on ONE of the opposing platoons - to give a greater chance of eliminating it. So I tried to further abstract things, in my head, and think of the elements more as "strength steps" within the battalion or company, rather than individual platoons....

Here they are with a pair of 28mm British troops of the same era - for comparison.

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

Probably more painting updates, but I'm not sure what might come next...

I have a LOT of stuff on the painting desk - Modern Micro British tanks and IFVs... An assortment of Imperial Guard and Adeptus Ministorum priests... The Terminators for Space Hulk... the Knight(s)... and so much more...

If I had to guess, I'd say the Modern Micro British armour would probably come next - they're quick, they're easy and there is a limited number of them and finishing them will complete a playable force.

Also:

I did finish up three more of the "What I Did For My Summer Vacation" posts - they're over on the Bike Blog...

What I Did For My Summer Vacation (Part 2: Climbing - Not Cycling)

What I Did For My Summer Vacation (Part 3 - Canmore Nordic Centre)

Return to the Goat Creek Trail (Part 4)

I have one more post about the last day of riding... which I'll hopefully get to this week. I'm king of running out of steam on these...

Vietnam Guns – in 20mm!

Some fire support for my 20mm Vietnam era Americans…

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

These guns and crew are from RAFM.

Of course now I feel the urge to build a hilltop firebase for these guys to sit on (and for the Vietnamese to overrun!).

Coming soon on Tim’s Miniature Wargaming Blog:

Just finishing up an odd assortment of 28mm stuff – Ancient Greek Civilians, some RAF (or RCAF) fliers, an Ancient Egyptian priest, and a modern contractor/mercenary/etc…

After that I have a few more 20mm WW2 Soviets on the painting desk that I hope to finish up this week, then I think I’ll be back to some Greek Hoplites – I’d like to complete one army before the Egyptians show up and completely distract me!

Longer term…? Hmmmm… I have some Greek Mythology stuff on the way that I’d like to get painted up so I can run some Savage Worlds Greek Mythology adventures for the kids… I was thinking about a HOTT campaign in June… perhaps I should finish up some fantasy armies for that – or some fantasy elements for the already existing historical armies…

I’m not sure about doing Queenston heights in the fall… we’ll see where I’m at in the summer… Right now I feel more like spending the rest of the year working on hoplites so I can put together four or five Early Greek Hoplite armies for a little campaign…

We shall see what we shall see…

Lions Reinforced

The “Lions of Timshasa” are the elite of the Federal Army of the Republic of Timbogo (F.A.R.T.). I have been re-basing some modern stuff and in the process realized I’d need to paint up some extra troops to be able to field a couple of forces for AK-47 Republic. I have a few more to paint up to finsh on force. Some other moderns will likely be pressed into service as a “Colonial Power” or “Superpower–backed Client State”.

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

The new “Lions” – These are 1/72 plastic figures from a variety of manufacturers… mostly old Esci Nato and Warsaw pact forces.

The newer forces are in the darker fatigues (they’re fresh from the factory and haven’t faded… and perhaps they’re from a different dye-lot… I guess that’s what happens when you buy factory direct “seconds” from China…)

I also painted a couple new stands for the Regulars… well… the mortar stand in completely new and a couple odd figures on some of the other stands…

The Command stands aren’t for AK-47 Republic. They’re for when (if) I use these guys in Cold War Commander

Hopefully at some point this month I’ll be able to get them into the field…

I’ve been thinking up new faction names (in addition to The Federal Army of the Republic of Timbogo (F.A.R.T.) and the Peoples Revolutionary Army of Timbogo (P.R.A.T.) I’ve already used)…

Timbogan Union for Real Democracy (T.U.R.D.)
Jihad for an Independent Liberal Timbogo (J.I.L.T.)
Timbogan Workers Army of Terror (T.W.A.T.)
Congress of Unity for Northern Timbogo (taking it a bit too far…)

I’ve also been thinking about some neighboring countires; Nobongo, Kobongo, and Gobongo… and all the possibilities there…

Jihandic Union for Nobongo-Kobongo (J.U.N.K.)
Nobogan Army Reserve Division (N.A.R.D. – Which is part of the Nobongan Army Reserve Corp…)
Workers Alliance for Northern Gobongo (W.A.N.G.)
Workers Alliance for Northern Kobongo (W.A.N.K.)
Democratic Independence Crusade for Kobongo (D.I.C.K.) or maybe…
Democratic Independent Nationalists of Kobongo (D.I.N.K.) (Splitters!!)
Central Union of Nobongan Tribes (taking it a bit too far again…)

Coming soon on Tim’s Miniature Wargaming Blog:

Probably some more moderns (African or European?) hard to say… Probably a few more African Regulars…

I have a pile of 1/72 plastic modern Germans. I bought the packs for the Milan ATGW teams (which I used for my modern British forces...) and have no great desire to do modern Germans... I thought I might use them as Future War troops (for Future War Commander!) and just paint them up with some funky fun camo... something similar to the Timashek Legion... but maybe in blues and greens...?

Nuthin' Much

Not a whole lot to report here...

I am still alive. Haven't played any games over the last week or so and what little time I've had to devote to hobby stuff has been spent re-basing moderns to slowly bring them up to the new basing standard.

I've mostly been working on Modern Africans (and equipment that could potentially be used by Modern Africans) as a friend expressed an interest in trying out AK-47 Republic. Might also give Cold War Commander a go again.

Of course as the new basing scheme has more figures per base I'll have less elements than I began with so I may end up painting a few 20mm moderns before this is all through.

After the dust settles on all this re-basing nonsense, I think I'm going to finish up some British and French Seven Years War stuff.

Basing… Again…

Or RE-basing, I should say….

I’ve been thinking about re-basing my 20mm WW2, modern, and future war stuff for some time… the current impetus is my desire to try out Bruce McFarlane’s HOTT WW2 and Modern HOTT variants. More on that in a moment, though….

I’ve also been re-basing a bunch of 15mm WW2 stuff so they all have a common base frontage – mostly for the same reason. It hasn’t been so much work as only a few things that need rebasing. All the infantry and tanks were already on a 50mm frontage, some of the smaller guns and vehicles were on smaller bases and had to be redone.

There are a couple problems with the 50mm frontage… First is that it isn’t one of the suggested base sizes in DBA/HOTT, so will require some tinkering to figure out what “100 paces” and I’ll have to make new measuring sticks just for that lot. The other is that the deeper bases are all deeper than the base frontage (~63mm deep – I’m using the standard base sizes for Flames of War), which causes some funny business when units are flanked and have to turn to face…

I COULD have re-based the whole shebang to 60mm frontages and everything would have been just ducky. But that would have been a whole lot of WORK… (just to “try out” a game) and also from time to time I get thinking I’d like to sell or trade off the last of the 15mm stuff and I figure it would be easier to do so if it were left on a base size that would be most useful to other people (i.e. the FoW crowd)…

As for the 20mm stuff it’s, more or less, ALL going to have to be rebased. The question is what frontage to use…? I’m considering 60mm or 80mm.

Now, I’m not JUST doing this to play the HOTT variants. Whether they work out or I go back to playing Blitzkreig Commander, Cold War Commander, and Future War Commander. I’ve wanted to do this for a while - get everything on at least a similar frontage and, if possible, only a few different base depths – for maximum uniformity…

Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages I can potentially foresee:

If using 60mm it would be the same frontage as 28mm DBA/HOTT. I could therefore use the same measuring sticks, terrain and game boards. Also some of the Modern tanks and vehicles are currently on 2.5” bases and would only require shaving ~3mm off one side to make it 60mm (it’s not as difficult as it sounds - I’ve tried it). This would make for a bit less work and wastage of basing materials.

The downside of 60mm is that some of the big sci-fi tanks won’t really fit at all and some of the bigger WW2 and modern tanks and guns that do fit are still on proportionally much deeper bases.

80mm is double the “suggested” base widths as 15mm figures – so everything’s pretty easy to figure out. This frontage would require proportionally less deep bases – even for the big stuff. This is really one of the biggest issues for me. Having units on bases that are much deeper than they are wide just kind of looks funny to me and causes issues in the geometry of most games –especially in maneuvering and falling back and turning to face flanking enemy. The infantry would be on 40mm deep base so that the total depth of 2 stands in column is the same as one base width, which makes things loads easier in terms of the geometry of the game.

My primary concerns about the larger frontage is that they’d look freakin’ HUGE and I might need MORE storage bins!? The space required to play would be bigger but for a standard DBA HOTT game it would only need a 4’x4’ area – which is no problem at all for me… of course if I was going back to BKC/CWC/FWC I might be pushing it for table requirements. And if I ever suffered the kind of head trauma that would make me think that skirmishing with 20mm figures would be fun some of the vehicles would be on bases that are just way too huge… of course… if I suffered that kind of head trauma I probably wouldn’t mind re-basing the whole shebang all over again anyway…

I did a few samples of each size for comparison and just to see what they look like….

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

From left to right; 50mm frontage (current), 60mm frontage, 80mm frontage.

60mm Froantage with 4 (SS on the left) or 3 (paras on the right) figure. I think if I went with the 60mm base widths I'd stick with 3 figures per base...

French Somua tank on 80mm (left) and 60mm (right) frontages. A lot of the WW2 tanks would fit on a 80mm square base – much reducing the number of units on bases deeper than they are wide.

British 6pdr on 60mm (left) and 80mm (right) frontages. On the 60mm frontage the base is deeper than it is wide and I think the barrel STILL pokes out a bit. On the bigger base there is no barrel overhang – a consideration for storage stands that have overhanging barrels (or any overhanging parts) are harder to fit into storage together and more likely to be damaged… I suppose it’s also an issue on the tabletop when trying to line up stuff.

The down side of the 80mm frontage here is it looks HUGE – the small gun and tean seem a little lost in the base… now this could be rectified with a bit more clever modeling – making these bases into mini dioramas. Perhaps some ammo boxes and extra crew could be added (of course that would require buying or manufacturing said sundry items… but..

German Pak 43/41 AT gun and crew on a 60mm frontage (left) and the British 6 pdr on the 80mm frontage (right). Even on an 80mm base I think the Pak 43/41 would still have some barrel overhand… unless I went with a REALLY deep base.

Jadgpanthers on 80mm (left) and 60mm (right) frontages. I think this is the largest of the WW2 tanks that I have in my arsenal currently.

Same Jadgpanthers with others for comparison – on the left are Jagdpanther and Somua on 80mm frontages and on the right are a jadgpanther and a british 6pdr AT gun on 60mm frontages. The Jadgpanther on the 80mm frontage is on a base that’s only 1.5x base width deep, whereas the Jadgpanther on the 60mm wide base is over 2x the base width deep.

Tanks supporting infantry. The 80mm frontage units (on the left) end up being only 2x the base width total depth. The 60mm frontage units end up being almost 3x the base width.

On to the Moderns…

These are Cold War Canadians, form left to right; 50mm frontage (current), 60mm frontage, 80mm frontage.

It’s in the modern stuff that the difference in base sizes between infantry and vehicles is most pronounced – for me at least. In the above example neither looks terribly wonky, though I’m preferring the 80mm (on the right) – it just looks a little closer to the right amount of stuff to have de-bussed from the APC. Below however…

With bigger APCs/IFVs this difference is definitely more pronounced. When I was playing
I said stands of Infantry were HALF platoons. Where the vehicles represented FULL platoons… of course if you lit up one IFV and the two half platoons were knocked out with it... that was a sizable chunk of your unit lost in one shot...

Same issues with the Canadians mounted in Grizzlies.

These are the largest of the Cold War tanks I have to deal with Russian T-72 (left) and American M1 Abrams (right).. they are on their current bases which are actually 63mm frontages (2.5 inches) – again they seem really deep – even if I move up a scale in gaming (where stands are companies or battalions)

On the left are 80mm wide bases (with an M113 and a blank one), on the right are ~60mm wide bases. With the 60mm wide bases the tank unit takes up almost twice the area of the mechanized unit… Where as the tank unit on the 80mm wide base would take up only 1.5x the area of the mechanized unit mounted up – and would be the same size as the mechanized unit once the infantry debussed (should have taken a picture of THAT!)

For the Russians I think both BMPs and T-72s would end up on the same 80x120(?)mm bases…

Another consideration… the future war stuff… The super heavy grav-tanks would just not fit on a 60mm front base… I could do the future war stuff on a different sized bases than the other stuff – but then I wouldn’t be able to use them together… and I WOULD like to be able to use them together, because the modern (and even WW2) stuff could be used with Future war units as troops from planets with lower tech levels… I even mix up ww2 stuff with modern stuff in brushfire conflicts where one side might be using obsolete WW2 vintage surplus while another is supplied by the latest their super-power supplier has to offer…

More of the Future War stuff and modern stuff that has already been re-based to 80mm wide bases.

One last shot – an M577 command post on it’s current base (63mm wide) on top of a 80mm wide base – the extra room could give me space to add some officer looking types looking though binoculars to make for a slightly more interesting looking general/command stand for my army…

Well just in putting this post together I think I’ve pretty much convinced myself to go with the 80mm wide frontages… What I should have done is done a couple infantry stands with 4 and a couple with 5… that’s pretty much the only question remaining – how many infantry to put on the base…?

I know, I know... I wouldn't even have to worry about this if I only did micro armour... don't even suggest it I'm not going to switch to a different scale.... but not that I've mentioned it... I DO have some Future War microarmour (battle tech and GW Epic stuff, etc) that I'm going to have to reconsider the bases for - they are all sorts of different sizes... I even thought about doing bigger bases for them (perhaps 60mm fronts) and putting multiple vehicles on a base - at lest for the smaller vehicles...

Game Plan 2009 – Part Two

Woah…. Sorry about all that nattering yesterday… Did anyone read through it all!?

Anyway, looking back at my original Game Plan for 2009, I’d say I’ve pretty much stayed right on track. I have a number of 28mm Hordes of the Things Fantasy Armies and DBA Historical Armies ready to go and I’m still interested in building more. I’d still like to do some WW2 skirmish gaming and I’d like to get back into some modern gaming, on both a skirmish and battalion/brigade/divisional level - but I’m not still totally stuck on Cold War Commander. I’m not completely abandoning it or anything, but I’d like to give Modern HOTT a try. I’d also still like to resurrect something of my Quebec 1759 plan…. Now, how to do that all!?

PAINTING PRIORITIES

This Week
- Paint 6-9 British Cavalrymen for Great War HOTT
- Finish painting “Libby” Hero for Amanda’s “HOTT Chick” army

This Month
- Cavalry Unit for John
- Descent minis for Other John
- Magician and Riders (if they show up) for Amanda’s “HOTT Chick” army
- 6 Uruk-hai pikes (I just stumbled into 6 more of the orcs with their pikes upright – I can paint those up and rebase the me with the other upright ones and ditch the ones that are “at the ready”!)

Rest of the Year…?
I’ll have to work on sorting that out… But right now I think the priorities would be:
- Finish rest of cavalry units for John (haw many did I agree to paint? 4 or 5…?)
- Enough Seven Years War British to play a game of DBA 1500-1900
- Enough 1914 British to finish a Brigade
- Finish ALL the 28mm WW2 stuff that I have
- 6 stands of “regular” Dwarf warriors (Blade)

After that…?
- Finish MY Norman DBA Army
- Anglo-Danish DBA Army for CVT
- Pict DBA Army
- Middle Earth HOTT Armies – Rohan, Isengard, Mordor… (and some Heroes!)
- Other Dark Age DBA Armies – Scotts, Welsh, Irish…
- Other Ancient DBA Armies – 2x Romans, 2x Early Successors…
- A few more elements for the Seven Years War in North American – Indians, More French and British Line troops, French Militia and colonial Troops, British Rangers…
-Narnian DBA Armies

Other Stuff – some of this requires BUYING stuff. Others are dependant on whether people show any interest. Others still feend on how muchof the other stuff gets done and/or my particular mood in the moment.

- Build 2x Mi-8 and 1x MiL24 Hind helicopters. I have these kits and they’re 1/72 they’re WAY too big for use with my other “20mm” stuff – I use 1/100 to 1/144 for aircraft with those – and if you look close they might look a bit small for 28mm figures… but they’re going to be BIG models – and take up plenty enough room on the tabletop if they land, so I don’t think I’d really want anything BIGGER. Like something that actually matches the scale of the 28mm figures… Anyway, I have some 28mm modern skirmishing figures – including some Soviet VDV Air Assault troops… it would be fun to run a scenario where they fly in and do an actual Air assault complete with gunship support and everything!!!

- Highland Dwarves – I’d like to build a separate army/command of Highland Dwarves. I have enough for 6 stands of Blade (or warband…? Depending on my mood!). I’d like to pick up two packs of the Westwind Highland Dwarf Infantry – as that would make three more stands of foot (blade or warband) – and two packs of “Rammock’s Raiders” for some Riders…

- Other Dwarves – If I had another 18 metal Dwarf (either more Ghost Miniatures or West Wind) and could find some artillery piece made of metal to replace the GW plastic elements of my army I could have an entire army made of metal… I could then make a THIRD Dwarf Army made entirely of GW platstic figures….

- If there was interest I might try and crank out enough Seven Years War stuff to play out the battle at Quebec for the 250th Anniversary… again I’d have to look and see what I have and what I’d need to finish up.

-BERBERS!? What the….!? Bob gave me enough Berbers to make two stands…. And they’re kind of cool looking and would be totally easy to paint. Now, I don’t have any historical opponents… and I have no desire to BUILD any armies of their historical opponents… But I thought I could use them in HOTT as a generic Nomadic Desert Dwelling folk… they could fight my “Tomb King” undead army - if I ever got that finished.. anyway… just and idea – WAY down on the list of priorities…

- Modern 20mm – As I mentioned I’d like to try out Modern HOTT. If that went over well enough I might launch (yet another) massive Re-basing Project to get all of my 20mm stuff on bases with 60mm frontages. Most of the AFVs are already on a base that’s close (I think they’re 2.5” so they could probably just be shaved down a touch rather than totally rebased…)

I guess the Eldar and the Imperial Guard should be taken off the back burner and metaphorically be bagged up and put into the freezer for now. I just don’t think I’m going to get to that at all anytime soon…

BIG PROJECTS

Well with the success of the HOTT campaign I am already starting to think about what “Big Project” event or campaign to do next…

Obviously another HOTT Fantasy campaign would be really easy to do – I could just add additional armies and some new element options to the existing ones.

An Historical Dark Age DBA Campaign – I have the armies for Normans, Vikings, Anglo-Danish, Scotts, Irish, Welsh… In fact if Chris brought HIS Normans one could be the Normans, and another could be the other West Franks. I have enough for two Viking armies so one could be the Norweigans, and another could be Danes or Some other group of Norse…

In addition to this I was thinking about an event for possibly Mayday – or maybe just an invitational event here ‘toon – a three stage Big Battle 1066 mini-campaign. I should mention that I stole this idea from my friend Curt…) We would play the big three battles of 1066 – Fulford Gate, Stamford Bridge and Hastings. As I mentioned I have enough for at least two Viking armies (and Gary’s starting on one of his own…) and between CVT, Cory and Myself we have (or WILL have) three Anglo-Danish armies, and both CVT and I have Norman Armies… so the first battle could be two or three Viking commands against two Anglo-Danish. The winners of that battle (presumably the Vikings) will fight against Harold at Stamford Bridge with whatever they have left… so the first battle shouldn’t really be winnable for he Anglos – it’s just to whittle down the Vikings a bit… however Stamford Bridge should have the potential to be a bit more of a pitched battle – because the winner of that one will fight William the Bastard and his army at Hastings in round three! Wouldn’t it bee cool it if was Harald Hardrada instead of Godwinson defending England at Hastings…!? Anyway…just an idea…

Another possibility would be a HOTT or DBA campaign using the 1500-1900 rules and armies of the Tricorne/Horse and Musket era (somewhere between Marburian/War of the Spanish Succession and the Seven Years War). As John and I have made masters and can cast our own – it could be pretty easy to come up with 12 or so stands for a half dozen “Imagi-nations”…

Still another possibility would be a Great War Era “HITT” campaign with forces based on the armies of 1890-ish to 1910-ish. We could use a map of Europe or another completely fictional land of “imagi-nations”

Anybody out there have any particular preferences…?

Game Plan 2009

What to do for 2009!? Well any of you that have been paying attention this last month or so will know I’m already deep in the planning of a Fantasy campaign weekend and an extended PBEM campaign using Hordes of the Things.

Looking back at the original Game Plan for 2008. It seems the plan lasted until about March or April…. There are a few reasons why the project died. Partly it was because the dealine was so far off… Then I got interested in trying to get fit and started riding a lot which cut into my productivity. I think the big reason was that no one was really showing up to my regular weekly game nights or showing any interest in the project. Sure there was plenty of people online – followers of the blog – that were very interested (bless you all), but they aren’t the people I play games with…

What have I learned from this..?! Make plans with closer deadlines. The deadline for the big plan for the 2009 Wargames weekend was 14 months away…

Also make plans for things that other people might be interested in… people that might actually play games with me…

So, what I’m thinking about for this year.

Hordes of the Things Campaign(s) – 28mm Fantasy Armies

Well the Wargaming weekend is set for June so I have five months to finish up seven armies. Three are more or less complete – the Vikings, Saxons, and elves. Each could do with a couple more stands for options and I need to make strongholds for each. The other four armies need a bit of work, but if I did one army a month and used the remaining month to finish up any optional extras, Strongholds and other terrain.

I think for January and February I’d like to work on The Dwarves and Orcs.

Maybe for my Wargaming Birthday bash I’ll have a Big Battler HOTT game – Orcs and Vikings versus Elves and Dwarves and Saxons…?

That would leave March and April to work on the Undead and the Normans (if CVT ever sends them too me!?)

That leaves me a month to finish up any odds and extras and terrain and stuff…

While I’m working on the HOTT armies I’ll also work on some individually based fantasy heroes and villains and minions for some Savage Worlds skirmish gaming…

After I’m done the Weekend Campaign I’m going to organize a long-term play by email HOTT campaign. Well… the emailers won’t really be playing any HOTT… they’ll just be playing heads of state and moving their armies around on a campaign map and making strategic decisions for their country… I’ll be playing the HOTT games (hopefully with the help of a few locals…) to determine the outcome of any armies bumping into each other!

That’s pretty much going to keep me busy for the first half of the year… and I don’t want to make any guarantees about what I’m going to to for the second half… There’s a few other things I’d LIKE to work on and play… They might be the things I work on after I’ve finished my HOTT fantasy armies… or I may just try and slip them in here and there between HOTT armies just for a little change of pace....

Cold War Commander - 20mm Cold War armies

I would like to work at finishing up (and PLAYING WITH!) some of my 20mm Cold War Commander forces. Some need very little to complete (assembling and painting a few AFVs). Some need a bit more (assembling and painting a whole lot of AFVs!). For the most part There isn’t much I’d really NEED to buy to finish up any of them. (Sure, sure - there are a few things that would be NICE to pick up to make them really feel “complete”…)

Future War Commander – 20mm/Micro Sci-fi Armies

I’d like to play this a bit this year… and work on some forces for it… but right now I have very little that’s done. I don’t even really have two small forces that could play against each other unless I used some of the Cold War Commander forces… and really… if I’m doing that I might as well just be playing CWC…!?

DBA - 28mm Historical Ancient Armies

Well since I’m going to be working on armies for HOTT… I might as well crank out a few more historical DBA armies (as they can be used as Human armies in a HOTT Fantasy game…?) I have enough to do a couple of Successor armies as well as a couple Early Imperial Roman armies… Occasionally I get the idea that I should model myself a basic greek hoplite figure and make myself a couple of ancient greek armies… we shall see…

World War Two Skirmish – 28mm Savage Worlds

Maybe it’ll get CK and Gary out if I say I’m going to run some WW2 stuff… There is startlingly little to do to finish up the forces I have for WW2 in 28mm. I just got a couple of things in the mail to finish up a second platoon of Russians… well, two slightly understrenght platoons of Russians… without one of their DP LMGs… Actually If I picked up the Assault Group DP pack I’d have enough for an understrength COMPANY (with their full compliment of LMGs!)….!? How cool would that be!?

Modern Skirmish – 28mm Savage Worlds

In the latter half of 2008 I finished painting up all the 28mm Modern I had and picked up some more… I don’t have a LOT of it, and thus not a lot of scenario options… I might like to pick up a few new things and play some more…

Quebec 1759!?

Is there any chance I could, after doing all of the above stuff, pull this off for the fall? Not the originally planned weekend campaign, just the battle on the Plains of Abraham…? It IS the 250th Anniversary. Nice big round numbers like that don’t come along all that often…

Regular Gaming

I’ve been kind of back and forth the last couple days about whether I should really bother hosting a regular weekly game night as I have done in the past. I’m kind of really stoked about painting and modeling right now. I’ve got Savage Saturdays (my weekly Savage Worlds game night) and right now setting up a second wargame night each week… for guys that don’t necessarily even show up… seems like a lot of work for… well… not much in return…. I think I’d rather spend the time painting right now.

Painting Update

A few more things rolling off the painting production line…

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

I’ve been mostly working on terrain this week. I want to make a ruined cityscape for playing any number of skirmish possibilities; Mordhiem, Stalingrad (or any other battle in a ruined city in Europe during WW2…), etc…

The one that I have completed, however, is for my generic mud-brick village set (usable from Africa to Afghanistan, and beyond! I’ve also been working on some free-standing walls to place between buildings and offer some more options for that set… They should be done in the next day or two – then I’ll get some shots of the village with all the new bits…

The final Commando of my cold war Canadian Airborne Regiment (shown here with the other two commandos in the background). Now all I need to do is make a CO stand and some observers and support stuff…. Mortars… ground mount TOWs… Those will all take some modeling so I might get working on the rest of the mechanized infantry battalion next. Or work on something completely different….

A combination of painting that last batch of John’s Descent figures, stumbling across a blog with some HOTT armies, and a desre to clean up my basement wargames bunker (there has been a stack of assorted GW Fantasy plastic sprues I got in a trade floating around the room that really needed a permanent storage spot – I decided they would be easier to store if they were assembled and based!) got me thinking about my own fantasy stuff. I started pulling out the drawers of stuff and seeing what I needed to finish up HOTT armies and get a general sense of how many left-overs I’d have to base individually for skirmishing and dungeon crawls… There were a couple things I took notice of that I thought would be quick and easy to “get out of the way” and this was one:

These are Trolls from West Wind Productions Dwarf Wars line. I picked them up dirt cheap in Edmonton a couple years back (like 75% off!). I should have bought everything in the bin – I did buy three regiments of Elves, but left a couple regiments of Orcs… fie… Anyway, I’m not sure how to classify these in HOTT, They’re not exceptionally “large” so I’m not sure about classifying them as “Behemoths”, “beasts” maybe…? “Hordes?” It's been too damn long since I've seriously looked at the rules, let alone played a game... I have two others; they’re on separate bases. I need two more stands for a Warmaster unit of trolls. I thought I’d pick up two more trolls from the local game store to fill out the remaining two stands (they have a lot of Reaper Stuff).

Finally an Epic Marine Drop Pod for my Future War Commander “Marine Corps” Force… should I ever get it done…

I'm hoping to have a productive week next week as the following Monday, I learned yesterday, I am going in for surgery (which I am more than just a little freaked out about) and might be out of commission for a while. Hopefully I'll be back to my usual manic productive self by the new year, maybe even the holidays...?

The Big TO-DO List

Once again I’m not quite sure what direction to take. So much to do, so little time. I find if I just work a bit on this and that, here and there, I’m not nearly as productive as when I’m a little more focused.

Here’s a list I tried to compile of all the things I’ve been thinking about working on recently….

Repair hills
Make new hills

Make more coniferous trees!

Make urban rubble (20mm/28mm)
Make city buildings (European)
Make city buildings (modern North America)

Finish trenches and/or make new/better ones (28mm)

20mm Modern Canadians
Finish 3rd Para Commando
Make Para CO stand + Para observer stands
Paint Grizzly(x2), M113(x1)
Assemble and paint Grizzly(x3), M113(x2), Cougar(x3), Leopard(x5)
TO GET: Lynx Recce(x1-2), Iltis(x4-7), M109(x1-2)

20mm Modern VDV
Assemble and paint BMDs (3xBMD-1, 3xBMD-2, 1xBTR-D, 1xSP-Mtr)

20mm Modern Russians
Paint T-72 (x5)
Assemble and paint BTR-60 (x3), SP Artillery, BRDM-Sagger,
TO GET: UAZ-469(x6-8), BMP-1(x3),

20mm Modern Americans
Paint M1 Abrams(x3), Bradleys (x5), Humvees(x2), Infantry,

20mm Modern British…
FN – 7 infantry stands and 1 HQ stand finished off battalion (less mortars… need to make as I have a feeling FAA isn’t ever going to send the ones I ordered…)
SA-80 – Assemble and paint Warriors(x10), Challengers(x6), Land Rovers(x6)…
(have enough infantry for a second battalion of light infantry/paras/marines…)

20mm Modern Africans….
Loads of trucks (die-cast) to paint and militia…

20mm Modern Aricraft – Assemble, paint and mount of flgith stands assorted jets and helicopters.

28mm WW2 Russians
Assemble and paint GAZ jeep
Paint last of the infantrymen…

28mm Modern Russians
GET: Heavy Weapons for Motor Rifles (TAG), More VDV (Mongrel)

28mm Partisans – there so few of them to finish up then I never have to think about them again…

Other 28mm Modern – like to get a few more Cold War British (with FN - finish a platoon…?) maybe a couple more Americans…?

20mm Sci-fi – Timashek Legion
Finish assembling and paint:
F’ngen heavy Grav Tanks (x3)
Kra G-IFV (x8)
Grav Command Cars (x4)
Grav Command Centre
Heavy Grav SP Rocket Batteries (x3)
Aero-Space Ground Attack craft (x3)
Drop Pods…?

20mm Sci-fi – Opposing Force
Infantry – modified Modern Germans
Attack Walker – crazy Japanese walker robot thingy…
Transport Walker – AT-AT

28mm WW2 Desert Stuff…
Commando/LRDG/SAS – need trucks/Jeeps
D.A.K. – Couple infantry to finish… need vehicles…?

28mm Victorian Horror/Sci-fi…
28mm Zombies…
28mm Fantasy skirmish heroes and HOTT/WM armies…

Micro Sci-Fi – Eldar and Marine and Battletech forces – to be painted (or, in some cases, REpainted)

yeah... and this is just the things I've been thinking about lately... I don't even want to think about all the other unfinished projects... because... well.. then I'll start THINKING about them and be even MORE distracted...

Since starting this list I have very nearly finished off the 3rd Commando of Canadian Airborne and have some ruined buildings for both European and Middle East well under way… I’m thinking the Victorian SF is going o be shelved as are the zombies for the time being….

What to do first…. Well I’m well into a terrain building spree so I should see that through… but then what..?

The Russians and partisans would, once again, seem the sensible thing to do – as there are few of them and I’m not buying any more (I SWEAR!!!). I have 8 Russian infantry and an AT gun and crew on the table right now, but I kind of don’t want to get started as I’m expecting a couple more in the mail next week (I’m not actually BUYING these things... long story…).

For some reason I’m totally stoked about painting up some of my Fantasy stuff!?
I’d like to make enough to field some armies for Hordes of the Things (which will eventually be expanded so I can field them as Warmaster armies…) and also some individual heroes and characters and monsters for some old school dungeon crawls.... This had probably come about because I’ve been working on some more Descent figures for John. Maybe it will pass before I put and paint on any of my own figures… It’s kind of stupid because I don’t really have anyone that would be really interested in playing… well the Saturday Night Savages would probably be down with some dungeon crawls…

I do have at least one person totally stoked to play Future War Commander… but that feels like “starting something new”, when I’m really in the mood to “finish things up” before going on to something new… Of course, I HAVE all the things I need for the Future War forces, they just need to be assembled and painted, whereas a number of the Cold War armies I actually need to pick up a few things to “finish” up some forces.

...sigh...

What to do, what to do…

guess I’ll go prime that next batch of descent figures and work on the ruins… maybe by the time I’m done those things will be clearer…

Canuck Command

Finally I have a CO stand for my Cold War Commander Canucks. (now to get the rest of the infantry… and APCs… and tanks… etc… finished!)

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

the M577 is from S&S Models. I had a bit of a wait for this as when I ordered it Shaun told me the mould had just broken down and he’s have to remould it. I’m not sure he ever did, as there were an awful lot of bubbles and amorphous blobs bulging from the model – not to mention a LOT of bubbles in the casting….

So I had a lof of carving to do… and filling of bubbles. I mostly filled the little ones by painting on loads of extra gesso. There’s a couple bigger ones that I didn’t bother with… if they bug me too much I may go back and fill them in. All the bush is to hide some of the nasty bits. I’m not sure it makes it look all that great. I may go back and add a rolled up cam-net on top… maybe take some of the buches off… I don’t know. Once I get playing with it I probably won’t care so much – there’s too many other things yet to do to be going back and nit picking about details on ones that are “finished”

While that was all pretty disappointing, I do like the model, and there aren’t many M577 models out there in 1:76-20mm-1:72 scale. Britannia does one for Vietnam, but it’s got grunts hanging off of it and something that looks like an ACAV turret on it!?

Hopefully this will see some action soon commanding my Cold War Canucks about. It will probably to double duty as Norwegian and maybe American…

Despite my disappointment with the model I’ll probably be ordering from S&S Models again as they do an Iltis and a Canadian Lynx recce vehicle!!??

The Military-Industrial Complex

A couple more Grav vehicles rolled off the line at Duran Armaments Industries, candidates from Tim’s Enemy Forces Sniper School graduate and the Federal Army of the Republic of Timbogo (F.A.R.T.) received some new machine-guns….

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

F’gen Heavy Grav Tanks for the Timashek Legion.

Kra Gav Infantry Fighting Vehicles.

Here is the legion at the moment. I just have to finish up some more Legion Infantry for Monday’s inaugural Future War Commander game! I plan to make three more Grav tanks, five or six more AFVs, four more HQ vehicles (some will be FAOs/FACs)... there's a few more infantry and infantry support to do.... I might do some self-propelled artillery and some space fighters (to swoop in and do ground attacks...).

Two sections of machineguns for the F.A.R.T.

I painted up a pile of generic commie snipers. From left to right; F.A.R.T., North Vietnamese, East German, mercenary, Timashek Legion, Soviet Air Assault Forces.

Graduates from the F.A.R.T. Officer Academy

The government of Timbogo announced today that the first class of officers from the new Federal Army of the Republic of Timbogo (F.A.R.T) Military Academy will be holding their graduation parade today. This is a move to modernize the F.A.R.T. Previously officers were selected through the traditional practice of following the biggest meanest most aggressive of thugs. After some stuffy of the more effective Western Powers militaries it was decided that perhaps some educated officers might help the efficiency and effectiveness of the F.A.R.T. (It surely couldn’t have anything to do with that ridiculous, inefficient democracy rubbish!)

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

These, like the Timasheck Legion are some more surplus Firefight 20 East Germans tha I got in a trade. The stand on the right isn’t an HQ stand, they’re an SA-7 SAM unit (also being trained at the Academy).

There hasn’t much need for anti-aircraft units in the past as the only threats to Timbogo have been internal: the People’s Revolutionary Army of Timbogo (P.R.A.T.). P.R.A.T. never had anything quite so modern as air power. There has been some concern about external threats lately. It has been rumored that trouble may be brewing on Timbogo’s eastern border with Zutu. It seems that Zutu is planning to reassert it’s traditional claim to the disputed territory of Zutim (which, it has recently been discovered, has vast untapped oil fields below it!). Backed by western powers (or at least western oil companies) the Western Horse Infantry of Zutu (W.H.I.Z.) is sure to be fully supported by the latest in killing technology should a shooting war break out!

I guess I better start "recruiting" (Painting!) some new regulars for these officers to command!

Bridge on the River Ulfhednarelven

Well, Last Friday’s Game got me totally pumped to play some more Cold War Commander, so I thought I’d carry on with the Northern Front campaign in Norway.

Ulfhednarbygd, Norway, 30 August 1985

SITUATION

Because of the daring action of the Royal Marine Commandos and the Canadian Parachute Regiment, the NATO forces had time to form a second line of defence. As the unrelenting soviet juggernaut rolled further south an Air Assault was executed well behind the NATO front lines to disrupt the flow of reinforcements and supplies. A battalion of the 76th Guards Air Assault Regiment was dropped at the small village of Ulfhednarbygd, a sleepy little community on the Ulfhednarelven River.

Stationed in the town was a company of Norwegian Infantry Reservists. A second company of mechanized infantry was stationed a few kilometers south in the next town.

The Canadian Airborne Regiment, the “Fire Brigade of the North”, still recovering from it’s two actions in the previous week or so, waited further south to ready to react to anything.

SCENARIO

The scenario was based on the Air Assault scenario out of the book. The NATO forces would only have one company of Norwegian reservists starting on the table. The Norwegian Mechanized Company could deploy using mobile deployment on the second turn on the road on the south edge of the table. The Canadian Airborne Commandos could deploy on any table edge starting on the third turn.

The major objective of the Soviet Air Assault troops was to take the village by turn eight, but also had to hold it until turn eight.

I had considered not allowing the NATO forces to call in air strikes on the village, but then didn’t. I had also thought I might give the Air Assault troops some scheduled air strikes, but also didn’t.

THE GAME

Col. Millaar deployed his Norwegian Reservists in the village.

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

A view of the town from the north.

A view of the town from the south. Not so many defenders pointed that way….

TURN ONE

SOVIETS

I landed my VDV companies to the east, southeast, and southwest of the village without mishap.

The First Company (to the southeast) fired on the defenders in the village and moved up cautiously.

The Third Company (to the southwest) stormed into the village. They eliminated sentries guarding the road to the south and assaulted into the village finishing of the platoon and occupying the southwest quarter. Some acceptable casualties were taken in the process.

The Second Company also fired on and assaulted into the village. They knocked out a section in the Northeast Quarter of the town and occupied it, and took considerable fire from the rest of the Norwegians, but not so much as to render any elements combat ineffective.

NATO

Fire from the Norwegians picked up suppressing a platoon (two stands) in the Second company.

TURN TWO

SOVIETS

There was some confusion amongst the ranks of the Third Company – apparently word started spreading about that they were to fall-back as reinforcements were sighted approaching from the south. (Command Blunder)

In the house-to-house battle raging in the northern half of town, the Second Company knocked out another section of Norwegians in an increasingly violent exchange of small arms and AT weapon fire.

NATO

The Norwegian Reservists pinned some VDV troops out in the open but failed to suppress those actually in the town.

The desperately needed reinforcements failed to materialize…

TURN THREE

SOVIETS

Orders from the Third Company’s headquarters continued to be confusing and contradictory (failure). Later in the turn, the CO, now IN the village himself, stepped and sorted the situation out, getting the Third Company moving again.

The Second Company continued to exchange fire with the remaining platoon of Reservists in the northwest corner of town.

The First Company failed to feel a sense of urgency about the situation and slowly made their way into town and began organizing themselves to set up some defences…

NATO

The Norwegian Reservists in the Northwest corner of town continued to hold on, suppressing a section of the Second Company. The mechanized force continued to stall, however. It would take fiery words from Col. Millaar himself to get them on to the table at the end of the turn! Their lack of faith in their armoured transport was apparent whent hey arrived dismounted. Their feelings were not unfounded as a VDV ATGW section tried to light up one of the platoons of M113s with Op-fire. It must have blown one vehicle to smithereens and sent the rest of the platoon scattering into evasive action (three hits, suppressed…)

One commando of the Canadian Airborne Regiment arrived (having been dropped just off the eastern edge of the table. The First Company’s lackadaisical attitude the previous turn cost them dearly as nearly an entire platoon was wiped out by the sudden violence perpetrated on them by the murderous Canucks.

TURN FOUR

SOVIETS

Soviet air support was successfully called in; a flight of SU-25s ran the gauntlet of NATO interceptors and AA ground fire to take a run at the Canadians. Their course was a bit off, however, and, impressive though the attack was, it only managed to suppress one section of Canadians.

The Second Company kept the Norwegians busy with their exchange of fierce fire, which gave elements of the Third Company an opportunity to maneuver around their flank and assault. This action cleared the village of Norwegian Reservists. Only one small section of the company remained, holding a trench dug in just north of town to cover the approaches by road.

NATO

The Forward Air Controller that arrived with the Canadian Airborne called in the CF-18s that had been waiting in a holding pattern to the southwest. As they roared in for the attack they flew into a startling amount of ground fire which knocked them right out of the sky (BOO-YAH!!! One CO, Three HQs and an SA-7 stand all within range…).

The last of the Reservists refused to go down and sold themselves dearly – suppressing another section of the Second company!

Their Mechanized brothers slowly began to advance. Fire knocked out one section of VDV ATGW, but Op-fire from the other wiped out a platoon of APCs.

The second Commando of Canadian Paras arrived and together the two advanced and fired on the VDV of the First Company still skulking around outside the southeast corner of the village. The fire now reduced the effectives of First Company to half-strength.

TURN FIVE

SOVIETS

Fire from the First Company (initiative and ordered) shot up a platoon of Canadian Paras, rendering half the platoon combat ineffective and suppressing the other half.

Air Support was then called in on the same commando. Now used to the harassing interceptors and ground-fire the Frogfoots were a bit more steady in their approach. Fire from the SU-25s knocked out another half-platoon, suppressing the balance and set the remainder of the platoon into a temporary flight (for the first time in the year or so that I’ve been playing this I actually had to look up if it’s “10cm or more” or “more than 10cm” that causes a falling back unit to be removed – it is the latter; they fell back their 10cm, but stayed on the table!!).

Fire from the Second Company finally finished off the last of the Norwegian Reservists and elements of the Third Company began maneuvering back to the south end of town.

NATO

The Canucks continued their advance towards the village, bombarding the First company with fire from their Carl Gs, reducing them to platoon strength.

The Norwegian mechanized company maneuvered and fired on elements of the third company. They scored some hits, but not enough to make anyone duck.

TURN SIX

SOVIETS

Fire from the remaining platoon of the first company suppressed a platoon of Canadians and caused a few to fallback. Fire from the Third Company suppressed a platoon and a half of the mechanized forces.

NATO

Both the Canadians and Norwegians pored fire into the southeast corner of town, reducing the First Company to half a platoon.

TURN SEVEN

SOVIETS

For the third time this game the VDV ATGW fired on a M113 platoon and caused three hits and a suppression (one hit shy of knocking them out!?)

The shattered remains of the First company held their ground, continuing to fire on and stall the Canadians advance… how long could they hold on.

The third Company did the same, though their situation wasn’t quite so desperate…

NATO

The Norwegians had a moment of extreme confusion, not even the screaming and ranting of Col. Millaar could get them moving this turn.

The Canadians, however, continued to pour fire from small arms, M72s and Carl Gs into the southeast corner of town… platoon commanders called for their men to cease firing when they realized they were no longer taking fire themselves. When the dust settled it became apparent that the First Company of the 1st battalion, 76th Guards Air Assault Regiment had effectively ceased to exist.

It was apparent by this time that, despite the gains they were making, it was incredibly unlikely that the NATO forces would be able to take the town in the next turn. Mr. Miller had some time before he had to go out and catch the last bus back to his end of town so we played out the next turn. Indeed it would have been interesting to play it right out to the conclusion and see how long it would take for the NATO forces to clear the town entirely, but we just didn’t have the time for that.

TURN EIGHT

Thrid Company knocked out half a platoon of Norwegians.

A flight of SU-25s approached the area, but were chased off by “Enemy Fighters” (Command Blunder).

NATO

The Company Commander for the Norwegians was clearly cracking under the pressure and failed to issue any orders once again. Or at least any coherent ones.

The Canadians charged forward and knocked out half a platoon of the Third Company, and nearly broke another (five hits… suppressed…). They advanced close to within Close Assault range, but couldn’t keep up the momentum. This brought the VDV force to it’s break point. The game surely wouldn’t have lasted too much longer.

Col. Millaar personally took command of the Norwegian mechanized Company and got them moving!

They too got just close enough to close assault before they lost the initiative…

Another view of the final dispositions of the forces involved.

Technically the VDV scored a Major Objective, as originally set out in the scenario – they took the village within 8 turns and held onto it until the end of turn eight. Thinking over it some more it should have been a major objective to take it within eight and hold on to it until the end of twelve, or a minor if taken by eight, but not held for the duration OR taken after eight, but held on until the end. Not that we would have had time to play out twelve turns…

Total Losses

NATO
7 Norwegian infantry stands (6 of these were he company of Reservists initially holding the village)
1 Norwegian M113
2 Canadian infantry stands

2x ATGW (spigot) stands

Realizing holding this town just wasn’t in the cards I imagine the commander of the Air Assault forces would probably got the remains of third company to fall back across the river to the north and left a platoon as a delaying force while the rest of the battalion (really only at company strength now) made for the hills.

Maybe next week I’ll have to play this out; some sort of pursuit scenario – either with Cold War Commander, or perhaps just a skirmish scenario using Savage Worlds (since I do have some fine looking 28mm VDV that are looking for an excuse to get on the tabletop!)
