40 Days of 40K - Part Five

Here are a few more of the 40K inspired drawings I'd done over the last few days.

#21 - Terminator

The prompt was just "Terminator", so I chose to do a CHAOS Terminator of the Emperor's Children chapter.

I meant to add a few more spikes... but forgot ...

#22  - Grey Knight

Brother Patrick - Grey Knight Purgator with Psilencer.

Based on this miniature from my own small force of Grey Knights.

You can see the rest of them here:

Grey Knight Force

 #23 - Crisis Suit

I was originally going to do a Crisis Suit when the T'au prompt came up a week or so ago, but then looked ahead and realized it showed up as a prompt of its own.

This one is based somewhat on the Tau Commander I painted for Finnegan.

Well... the colour scheme at least... I think there are a few more crisis suits that will have a similar scheme...

...

At this point I started jumping around a bit. No one said they had to be done IN ORDER?! So I started doing the ones that matched the actual day of the month, and figured I'd just catch up with the ones I'd skipped by when I could..

Day 27 - Dreadnaught

Remember when these were called "Eldar Dreadnoughts"...? I do, so....

Wraithlord Melynaearian

Again, based on a miniature of my own...

Eldar Dreadnoughts (Wraithlords)

....

and then I just decided to do something else entirely...

Watch the Corners - 28x35.5cm (11x14) - Ink on Paper

The other day I was feeling like I needed to do something different. All the drawings for this, and the other challenge I've been working on have been in these little 8"x8" watercolour sketchbooks, which are fun... but I don't LOVE working that small.. and I needed to do something different.

I prepared a handful of watercolour sheets, taping them down to boards a few weeks (months!?) back, so they'd be ready for any moment I felt the urge to use them...That urge struck the other night while watching RuPaul's Drag Race with Amanda.

Still 40K inspired, but not really following any of the prompts from the 40 Days of 40K Challenge. I'm not even sure what I was thinking...? Is this a ganger in the underhive? Is it a member of a Rogue Trader's crew preparing for boarding action?! I don't know. Just a dude with a bolter and a chainsword (and his faithful servo skull companion) ready for action.

.....

I'm probably going to slow down on these going forward. I had planned on doing a critter on a bicycle AND one of the 40K drawing prompts each day until I'd filled BOTH of the sketchbooks I've been using for these challenges - which would be around the end of November. I'm thinking now I'll do a few more Critters on Bicycles to finish off the month (and then I'll have done one of those EVERY DAY, ALL MONTH! On November, to keep the momentum going, I'm going to try and still do a drawing a day, but, like just ONE - alternating between the Critters on Bicycles and the 40K drawings... and try to get back to painting some MINIATURES and PLAYING SOME GAMES!!!

Grey Knight Force

While working on the Obliterators over the weekend, I also finished up a few more Grey Knights. I was kind of considering them for one of the scenario options for the Daemon World Campaign... but just didn't get to it... I have something entirely different for the final battle on Thursday.

The force so far - could be fielded as a Battalion Detachment now!

Or... could still be fielded as a Patrol Detachment - as the Ordo Malleus Inquisitor does not take up an HQ slot in the force organization.

Headquarters

Brother Captain - Storm Bolter, Nemesis Force Sword, Frag, Krak, and Psych-out Grenades - Power Rating 7

Brotherhood Champion Tyson - Storm Bolter, Nemesis Force Sword, Frag, Krak, and Psych-out Grenades- Power Rating 5

Inquisitor Maria - Ordo Malleus - (in Terminator Armour) - Storm Bolter, Nemesis Daemon Hammer, Psyk-Out Grenades, Psychic Powers: Smite, *one other - to be determined* - Power Rating 6

Brother Gordon - Storm Bolter, Nemesis Force Halberd, Frag, Krak, and Psych-out Grenades

Brother Todd  - Storm Bolter, Nemesis Force Halberd, Frag, Krak, and Psych-out Grenades

Power Rating 7

Strike Team II

Justicar Jeff - Storm Bolter, Nemesis Force Sword, Frag, Krak, and Psych-out Grenades

Brother Steve  - Incinerator, Frag, Krak, and Psych-out Grenades

Brother James  - Incinerator, Frag, Krak, and Psych-out Grenades

Brother Kyle  - Incinerator, Frag, Krak, and Psych-out Grenades

Brother Robin - Incinerator, Frag, Krak, and Psych-out Grenades

Brother Kevin - Incinerator, Frag, Krak, and Psych-out Grenades

Brother Patrick  - Psilencer, Frag, Krak, and Psych-out Grenades

Power Rating 7 (for five of them, one always Left-out-of-Battle)

(typically only five of these would take to the field any more and the Power Rating jumps to 13)

Total Power Level (so far): 45

Enough for a Crusade starting force!

A pair of alternative Ordo Malleus Inquisitors. Without the Terminator Armour, they would only be Power Rating 4.

I have a few other things that need finishing up  I have a Dreadnought and  three Terminators - all older metal minis!

One of the Terminators is done, I just need to finish up the other two. I'll probably field them as Paladins, as I have no great desire to track down two MORE old metal ones, and Paladins can be fielded in units of just three! The only trouble with them, is the OLD metal terminators DON'T have the wrist-mounted stormbolters the newer ones have - just the Nemesis force Halberds... Not sure if I should mock something up or track down newer bits and try to stick those one or just say they don't have them...? Regardless the Dreadnought and three Paladins would add another 10 Power Rating to the force.

I also have a pair of Rhino APCs to finish up. They're newer ones. As they can carry ten regular Greay Knights each, I could use them to ferry around the three Strike Teams and the Purgation Squad - two in each of the Rhinos. Rhinos are 4 Power Rating each.

So painting up the rest of the stuff I have could bring the force to 63 Power Level.

I do also have Bother Captain Stern and Castellan Crowe models... but I'm not super stoked about fielding named characters - so they're waaaaaay down on the paint list. I suppose I could just paint them up and maybe call Stern by some other name and just use him as a second Brother Captain (which would bring the force to 70 Power Level)

The only other thing I'm sort of considering would be a Land Raider, of some sort. This would make the entire force MECHANIZED and could ferry around the HQ elements along with the Paladins. But unless a crazy good deal on a used one comes my way, I probably won't be picking that up any time soon! (But if I did, that would be 85 Power Level!)

If I wanted to get crazy and bring it up to 100, that would probably require a Razorback and a Stormhawk Interceptor....

...but that would be CrAzY!?

Obliterators and Grey Knights

I finished up a pair of Chaos Space Marine Obliterators over the weekend - for use in the Daemon World Campaign!

Two Emperor's Children Chaos Space Marine Obliterators. I haven't come up with names for them. I should probably do that.

Obliterator #1

Back side of Obliterator #1 - I feel like I should have done a bit of highlighting on the symbol of Slaanesh. I might still do that...

Obliterator #2

Back of Obliterator #2

I'd hoped to get a few more Daemon things finished up as well, for the final game on Thursday... but it just didn't work out...

I did also get a few more Grey Knights done as well, however...

A third Strike Team - I could now, in theory, field a Battalion Detachment of these! It's technically a Strike Squad in the rules - but in the fluff a "Squad" is ten dudes, but you can field them in groups of five - which I've decided to call "Teams"

I also happened to finish up a Grey Knight with a Psilencer. He didn't really have a squad to join, so I did him in the colours of the Purgation Squad and figured he could be used if ever I wanted to include on of these instead of one of the Incinerators.. Or he could be used in a Kill Team.

I also repainted some of the Heraldry and guns on the Purgation Squad - just to make them a little more different from the Strike Squads/Teams

Daemon World Campaign - Scenario #5 - Onslaught of the Daemon Engines!

Played it this afternoon - should have the game report finished up later this evening.

After that - I have a post in the works about the Grey Knights - as a complete force.

MORE Grey Knights (and their FOES!)

Well, once I started rolling with the Grey Knights, I thought I'd just carry on and finish up a few more. It's one of those forces where I don't really have all that much to do and then it's, kind of, DONE. Well... sort of... I mean, all the stuff I HAVE will be done and, having done all that, I'll have a completely useable force.... Sure, there are other things I COULD add to it... like two more terminators to complete a unit of those... or a Land Raider, to carry around aid terminators or the Brother Captain (who also wears Terminator armour)... Or TWO Land Raiders (one for the Squad and one for the Captain... and maybe the Inquisitor in the Terminator Armour)... Or, really, just about anything could be added to this force.... but I like the idea of keeping it SMALL. A small, tight, super elite band of brothers that work directly with a small select group of Inquisitors - who have no trouble requisitioning entire companies of Imperial Guard, when they see fit!

Also, I happened to finish up some of the potential Nemesises....? Nemesees....? Nemesi....? Whatever... some potential opponents for the Grey Knights - a Master of Possession and two Greater Possessed. THey've actually been skulking around my workbench for months. I got them with the Start Collecting Chaos Space Armies box and, while I had no plans to include them in the force for Battleforce Recon - which had been my main focus for completing Chaos Space Marines - there is a short campaign involving both the Master of Possession and Greater Possessed in the Blackstone Fortress Annual!

So... starting with the "Good Guys"...

Grey Knights and Inquisitors and Acolyte.

I did also rebase this Inquisitor Stapelton and his acolyte, Vives. Stapelton is also an Ordo Malleus inquisitor, so I guess I now have THREE of them. A triumvirate, I guess.

The Grey Knight Squad - Beta Carotene Squad. Two of these I'd actually painted previously, they just ended up in this squad as part of the Re-org. I did repaint their insignia/devices, so.... From left to right, the Squad includes; Bother Brett, Brother Todd, Justicar Jeremy, Brother Trevor, and Brother Gordon.

Brother Dirk,
Grey Knight Terminator - Nemesis Force Halberd, Storm Bolter (I guess that's what we're calling that bolter-like-thingie on the end of his halberd, Krak, Psyk-Out, and Frag Grenades
Specialism: Veteran
Skills: Grizzled (Ignore penalties to Leadership and never tests)
36 Points

For the time being, this fellow, and the other two Grey Knight Terminators I have still to paint, will likely only be used in Kill Team (as I need five for a full strength Terminator Squad in regular 40K or Apocalypse... I mean, I guess I could use an understrength squad... buuuuut....)

The whole daemon-hunting force so far.

Master of Possession and two Greater Possessed. In addition to being an addition to my Emperor's Children 40K Forces and being able to be used in Blackstone Fortress, both the Master of Possession and the Greater Possessed can be used in Kill Team.... But still no Noise Marines in Kill Team...

I haven't named these yet...

Whoopsie, almost forgot this one. A Vindicare Assassin. When they did a little Made-to-Order or Inquisition and Assassin figures, I picked up the two assassins I didn't have (so I'd have a full set of old metal ones) and an Inquisitor and Daemonhost and a priest... then, much to my dismay, the assassins they sent were FINECAST!? GAH!? Ah, well... I'm getting over it... sort of... or.. maybe I will... Anyway, this one is done. I still have a metal Culexus Assassin and the finecast Callidus Assassin.

Grey Knights

Last week I finished up an Ordo Malleus Inquisitor in Terminator Armour and that got me thinking about the Grey Knights again - as Daemon-Hunting adepts of the Ordo Malleus - and I ended up reorganizing and rebasing the force. Or, at least, the ones I had painted so far... And I finished off one Grey Knight that was partly painted - to complete a newly reorganized squad. With the rebasing I added two Commanders (a Brother Captain and a Brotherhood Champion) and a regular Grey Knight Strike Squad and a Grey Knight Purgation Squad to the Inquisitor's Force of Daemon Hunters.

Newly finished Grey Knight (Brother Roger) AND a Death Watch Marine of Finnegan's I painted this week. I had originally tried painting the Death Watch with Contrast® paints... but it looked like garbage, so I repainted the whole thing and it looks much better now...

Here is the force so far...

Daemon Hunters! A couple of Ordo Malleus Inquisitors and a small force of Grey Knights

As Iv'e been thinking about Kill Team a lot lately, so I was mostly considering how I'd organize them for Kill Team. Thus the points and specialisms and skills mentioned below are for when they are being fielded in Kill Team.

The pair I've earmarked as Ordo Malleus Inquisitors.

I Haven't actually named either yet...

Nor have I statted them out for Kill Team - as there AREN'T really rules for Inquisitors in Kill Team... YET! But, the one in Terminator Armour I figure I could use her "as Brother Captain" Grey Knight. The other...? Maybe as a "As Brotherhood Champion"...? But give him a combo-weapon (that Brotherhood champions aren't normally supposed to have)

Brother Captain Alan
Brother Captain with Nemesis Force Sword, Storm Bolter, Krak, Psyk-Out, and Frag Grenades
Commander Specialism: Strength
Level One - Skill: Muscular - 100 Points
Level Two - Skill: Brutal Strike - 120 Points
Level Three - Skill: Devastating Power - 140 Points
Level Four - Skill: Crusher - 165 Points

Not being sure what level I'd field the Brother Captain at, I've figured out what I'd field him at for each level, and have done the same for the Brotherhood Champion below.

Brother Champion Tyson
Brother Captain with Nemesis Force Sword, Storm Bolter, Krak, Psyk-Out, and Frag Grenades
Commander Specialism: Melee
Level One - Skill: Expert Fighter - 108 Points
Level Two - Skill: Warrior Born - 128 Points
Level Three - Skill: Precision Strike - 148 Points
Level Four - Skill: Lightning Reflexes - 173 Points

Alpha Wolf Squad (from left to right: Brother Roger, Brother Steve, Justicar Jeff, Brother Blake, and Brother Curtis)

Justicar Jeff
Grey Knight Justicar - Nemesis Force Sword, Storm Bolter, Krak Grenades, Psyk-Out Grenades
Specialism: Leader
Skill: Resourceful (+1 Command Point per turn)
19 Points

Brother Steve
Grey Knight Gunner - Incinerator, Krak Grenades, Psyk-Out Grenades
Specialism: Demolitions
Skill: Breacher (+1 wound rolls against targets that are obscured)
22 Points

Brother Blake
Grey Knight - Nemesis Force Halberd, Storm Bolter, Krak Grenades, Psyk-Out Grenades
Specialism: Zealot
Skill: Frenzied (+1A and +1S in a battle round in which they charged)
18 Points

Brother Curtis
Grey Knight - Nemesis Force Halberd, Storm Bolter, Krak Grenades, Psyk-Out Grenades
Specialism: Combat
Skill: Expert Fighter (+1A)
18 Points

Brother Roger
Grey Knight - Nemesis Force Halberd, Storm Bolter, Krak Grenades, Psyk-Out Grenades
18 Points

Alpha Wolf Squad is a full-sized Kill Team on it's own - at 95 points. The rest of the squads are, more or less, just extras that could be added into the roster.

Delta Badhand Squad - (from left to right: Brother James, Brother Kyle, Justicar Brian, Brother Scott, and Brother Robin)

Justicar Brian
Grey Knight Justicar - Nemesis Force Halberd, Storm Bolter, Krak Grenades, Psyk-Out Grenades
Specialism: Leader
19 Points

Brother
Grey Knight Gunner - Incinerator, Krak Grenades, Psyk-Out Grenades
22 points

Brother
Grey Knight Gunner - Incinerator, Krak Grenades, Psyk-Out Grenades
22 points

Brother
Grey Knight Gunner - Incinerator, Krak Grenades, Psyk-Out Grenades
22 points

Brother
Grey Knight Gunner - Incinerator, Krak Grenades, Psyk-Out Grenades
22 points

Being Fielded in 40K or Apocalypse... currently... this would only be a Patrol Detachment... But I'd only be able to take TWO of the HQ Elements

HQ Elements
Inquisitor 4PL
Inquisitor in Terminator Armour 6PL
Brother Captain 6PL
Brotherhood Champion 5Pl

Troops
Strike Squad (5) 8 PL

Heavy Support
Purgation Squad (5) 7PL

STILL TO DO!

I have two other squads to finish up: Beta Carotene Squad and Charley Horse Squad - both are just Regular Grey Knight Squads. They'll only ever be used in regular 40K or Apocalypse - when this force is fielded as an allied Battalion Detachment for any Imperial Force. I also have two Rhinos that could ferry the four five-man squads around... I'd need something else for the command elements (Captain and Champion).

When these are all finished up, I should be able to field the force as an allied Battalion Detachment for any of my Imperial forces in either regular 40K or 40K: Apocalypse

I also have three Grey Knight Terminators to paint up. They'll probably only ever be used in Kill Team, because to use them otherwise I'd have to track down two more of them. I just can't be bothered at this point... I guess I should never say never....

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

I have some Necromundan Imperial Guard I'm currently organizing for Kill Team, as well as some Imperial Fist Space Marines. Writing a bit more background for each of those... so... it's taking longer... I guess tomorrow I'll be posting Part One of May's Games (and Other Stuff)

40K - Asuryani versus Grey Knights

Wednesday evening I pedalled over to Robyn's house to play some 40K. I've been trying to get together and play a game of 40K or Kill Team with Robyn for ages, but things just haven't worked out. Well this week they finally did! We both brought out 1000-point forces to practice for the Battleforce Recon tournament we're both playing in this coming Sunday. Robyn played Grey Knights and I played my Asuryani (Craftworld Eldar).

SCENARIO

We played Mission #2 - Cut Off the Head, from the tournament pack. Our commanders were were apparently gathering for a crucial tactical meeting when battle was joined.

Each player allocated 3 Intel Points, as evenly as possible, between the CHARACTERS in their army, and notes this down on their army roster. If your army has no CHARACTERS, 1 Intel Point would instead allocated to the Warlord. I had three characters so each got 1 Intel Point. Robyn only had one two - so one of them had two points, the other had one.

Crucial Intel:  At the end of the third battle round, and at the end of each battle round thereafter, each player adds up the number of Intel Points allocated to models from their army that are currently on the battlefield, or that are currently embarked within a TRANSPORT that is on the battlefield; this is the number of victory points that player scores.

Transmit Intel:  Starting from the second battle round,  players score 1 victory point if they control the objective marker at the start of their turn. A player controls this objective marker if they have more CHARACTERS that have had Intel Points allocated to them within 3" of the objective marker than their opponent does (other units cannot control objective markers; ignore them when determining who controls the objective marker in this mission).

Points were also awarded for slaying the enemy Warlord, First Strike (if any units from your opponent’s army were destroyed during the first battle round),  Linebreaker:  If, at the end of the battle, you has at least one model within the enemy’s deployment zone), and variable points for controlling other objectives based on "Rules of Engagement" cards drawn each turn...

The scenario ended after four rounds

THE GAME

I won the roll off, so picked a side and set up first and took the first turn.

ROUND ONE - Eldar

Banshees and Rangers moving up to seize the central Objective - not that they could control it, so they were moving up more to deny the enemy the ability to control it until one of the Warlocks moves up that COULD control it.

Well the banshees planned to move past this point and engage the enemy directly in close combat and this was a good place to hide behind some LOS blocking terrain.

On the Aeldari right a squad of Dire Avengers took up residence in the hard cover of a ruined building, right next to one of their own objective markers.

In the centre back I set up the Farseer well out of sight and next to two of the Wraithlords where he could give one a "re-roll all failed hit rolls" with his warlord trait and the other a "re-roll all failed hit rolls" with one of his psychic powers...

On my first round of shooting two of the wraith lords fired on two of the strike squads and caused a few casualties. I think one of the Ranger Squads had line of sight on one of them and may have caused another casualty...

If I were a smart player I probably would have remembered the FIRST BLOOD victory point and tried to concentrate fire on ONE UNIT, in hopes of taking it out on the first turn...

 ROUND ONE - Grey Knights

The Grey Knights brought some heavy fire down on the Dire Avengers on the right - taking all but the Exarch out of action! He passed his morale check and survived there in cover until the very last round of the game!

I think they might have scored a Victory Point (or two?) for holding their own objective or having more of their own units in their deployment zone...? (from their Rules of Engagement card)

ROUND TWO - Eldar

My Warp Spider appeared out of the immaterial and shredded a Strike Squad - only one survived - but, like the lone Dire Avenger, survived until the end...

the Banshees charged one of the Strike Squads (or the remains of one that had already lost two to fire) and totally finished them off. I was close enough that I could have consolidated into another Strike Squad and the Other Bad-Ass Dude in Terminator Armour (with the Big Freaking HAMMER) .. but I wasn't sure if they would get to fight in this fight phase if I did so, and if they did, they would have probably brought down a world of hurt... mind you, by NOT consolidating into them, they's all get to shoot the Banshees on their next turn THEN charge any that were left and bring down a world of hurt...

Once again, I got no victory points because the Rules of Engagement card I drew gave me 2VP if I controlled both ENEMY objectives... but I did get one point for having a character (with an intel point) holding the objective!

  ROUND TWO - Grey Knights

On round two the Grey Knights brought in the Terminator Squad from their Teleporarium. They shot the crap out of the Warp Spiders - only the Exarch and two others were standing when the dust settled. (I used 2 Command Points to endure they stayed on the table at the end of the round).

The Howling Banshees were also pretty badly shot up, and the Other Bad-Ass Dude in Terminator Armour (with the Big Freaking HAMMER) and the remains of a Strike Squad charged the banshees and finished them off...

I think they might have scored another Victory Point (or two?) for holding their own objective or having more of their own units in their deployment zone...? (again, from their Rules of Engagement card)

ROUND THREE - Eldar

My Warp Spider moved AWAY from the terminators and finished off the second strike Squad with their Death Spinners then charged the Other Bad-Ass Dude in Terminator Armour (with the Big Freaking HAMMER)... this was probably a mistake... they all died.

This round I scored one victory point for having my Warlock near the central objective marker, and three more for having three characters with Intel points still on the table. I might have scored a point for holding one of my own objectives...?

ROUND THREE - Grey Knights

Other Bad-Ass Dude in Terminator Armour (with the Big Freaking HAMMER)) moved up and blasted away the Warlock with some Smite and shooting... then charged my Wraithlord and smashed it to bits with his Big Freaking HAMMER...

The Terminators started advancing towards my solitary Dire Avenger Exarch and Warlock - they poured fire down on him, but somehow he survived.

The Grey Knights scored four victory points for having three intel points worth of characters still on the table, and controlling the central objective marker. There may have been points from Rules of Engagement cards..? Or not...?

ROUND FOUR - Eldar

fire from both units of Rangers and one of the Wraithlords finished off the Other Bad-Ass Dude in Terminator Armour (with the Big Freaking HAMMER) - despite him having a 2+ invulnerable save and at least 4 wounds left! (6s to wound with Ranger Long Rifles will do that - Mortal Wounds FTW!)

I got two points for having two characters on the table with intel points and may have gotten a point for my Rules of Engagement card... I ended the game with 9 victory points.

ROUND FOUR - Grey Knights

The Terminators continued to bring fire down on the Dire Avenger exarch.. and.. I think he may have finally gone down...?

Bad-Ass Grey Knight Terminators! Didn't even scratch them...

Grey Knight Venerable Dreadnought snuck out from cover to control an objective on the last turn. I think I did two wounds to it during the game - they may have been lucky shots from Rangers...?

At the end of the game Robyn had 11 victory points and I had 9. I have to admit, I don't love these Maelstrom of War-type scenarios with the card drawing to determine what objectives you have to hold EACH TURN to score victory points for THAT TURN?! It just seems so random. Regardless, it was a SUPER FUN game, though - so glad I finally got in a game with Robyn. Hopefully we'll get some more gaming in over the summer!

In all I think I lost 7 Dire Avengers, a warlock (or two?), the Banshees and Warp Spiders, and a Wraithlord. The Grey Knights lost the Other Bad-Ass Dude in Terminator Armour (with the Big Freaking HAMMER), and all but one of their Strike Squad members (14).

I definitely need to make a "cheat sheet" with the stats for all my units and weapons for the weekend (I spent waaaaay too much time looking up things I would have thought I would have remembered... but couldn't). I also need to go over the Stratagems available - as I really only used the basic ones (Command re-rolls, Insane Bravery, and I would have used the one to let your troops fight next if any of the Banshees had survived the Other Bad-Ass Dude in Terminator Armour (with the Big Freaking HAMMER)'s attacks... I was also thinking I could make some counters to put on the table to remind myself which psychic effects are in play..?

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

My own Grey Knights...? I did start painting the last eleven of them the other night...

Other odd/assorted minis...?

I'd really, REALLY like to get in another practice game (maybe against Finnegan's Orks?) but I'm not sure if I'll get to do that... (if I did, there'd be a report of it). If not, there will certainly be a report of the action on Sunday! Stay tuned!
