Game Plan 2025 - Q2

Well it has been a BUSY First Quarter!

As with all these quarterly plans, let's have a look as how the last quarter went...

(for reference, you can see the actual plan here: Game Plan 2025- Q1)

Q1 Games

These "plans" are really just "guidelines" or guesses as what I might play - based  largely on what I have been playing  and enjoying and hope to continue, or what I HOPE to play - something I maybe haven' been playing but would really like to make a concerted effort to incorporate into my game playing in the coming months.

Most of what I "planned" for 2025 - Q1 was from the former category - things I'd been playing and hoped to continue...

Warhammer Underworlds

I had planned (hoped..?) to return to playing Warhammer Underworlds. I played SO MUCH of it in the first half of 2024... and then it just sort of petered out. There was some hope that interest would be renewed after the World Championship with the release of the new edition, but that was kind of stymied by not being able to get my hands on the cards needed to play the freaking game because the Warbands of Embergard card set sold out within minutes of it going up for pre-order and weren't available again for three months!?

In the end... I played not a single game!?

Warhammer Quest

Amanda, Finnegan and I have played Warhammer Quest: Cursed City pretty much every week throughout the quarter! We're all having a lot of fun playing through the campaign - which seems like it will take a while to complete, but that's fine!

Role-Playing Games

The In-Person Soulbound game was going quite well. We were playing pretty much weekly, but that's kind of petered out... Maybe we'll get it going again...?

The Online Campaign... also kind of fizzled.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar

I'd had big hopes that when the Ravage Coast campaign book was released we'd get a narrative campaign going and play lots of games... I have played only ONE game of Age of Sigmar and not a single campaign game.

Other Board Games

I had hoped we might get a regular board game night going... but with the weekly Warhammer Quest games and the Soulbound role-playing game AND trying to squeeze in a few other miniature games... there hasn't been a lot of time for other board games.

We did play a few - mostly at the beginning of the Quarter/end of the Holidaze in early January.

Solo Miniatures Games

If I wasn't getting other games in, I determined I'd get playing some solo games! Getting games in hasn't been much of a problem - with weekly games of Warhammer Quest and the Soulbound RPG - it's been a bit of work to try and get other games in.. Despite that, I HAVE played a few solo games of Five Men in Normandy and FiveCore Pulp Adventure.

Not only that... but I actually ran games of Five Men in Kursk and FiveCore Pulp Adventure for other people!?

(STILL have not got in games of Devilry Afoot or Five Parsecs from Home... but I did buy the Five Parsecs from Home Tactics expansion!?)

Warhammer 40,000

With the expected release of the Astra Militarum, Aeldari and (possibly) Emperor's Children Codexes, I figured I might pick up one or two of those and start playing, from time to time, mostly with Orion (who still plays a LOT of Warhammer 40,000!)

I did pick up the Codex: Aeldari when it was released in February...

I also picked up the Emperor's Children Release Box...

Still haven't played a game, though...

GAMES I  PLAYED

Here is what I actually played in the first quarter:

  • Warhammer Quest: Cursed City x11
  • Bolt Action: Third Edition x7
  • Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soulbound x7
  • Five Men at Kursk WW2 Skirmish Warfare x3
  • Five Men in Normandy .30 Cal edition x2
  • FiveCore Pulp Adventure x2
  • Patchwork x2
  • Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Crypt Hunters x2
  • Lost Patrol x1
  • Warhammer Age Of Sigmar (Fourth Edition): Core Rules x1

And THIS is why I abandoned Annual plans... and the quarterly Game Plans are more "guidleines", at best!

Q1 Miniatures

I painted a lot of miniatures in the first quarter...

Age Of Sigmar

The MAIN PLAN was to carry on painting Age of Sigmar models and FOCUS on the Slaves to Darkness and Soulblight Gravelords armies. The Slaves to Darkness army I'd hoped to play in the Ravaged Coast campaign and the Gravelords I figured I'd be inspired by the ongoing Warhammer Quest: Cursed City games to paint more undead...

Also I figured there would be other Age of Sigmar miniatures I'd be painting for the Soulbound Role-playing game.

What I did paint:

Almost ALL of these were for Soulbound, though.. the Age of Sigmar Role-Playing Game!

Warhammer Underworlds

Along with other Age of Sigmar battle game miniatures, I'd hoped I might also get painting the remaining Warhammer Underworlds miniatures... In the end MOST of the Age of Sigmar models I painted were ones needed for Soulbound!?

Warhammer Quest

There wasn't a LOT I NEEDED to finish for Warhammer Quest: Cursed City... as mentioned above, I did paint Carmilla du Sang, who is a character in Night Wars, the expansion/sequel to Cursed City (which we won't be getting to for a bit!) and

I STILL really, REALLY need to paint Torgilius the Chamberlain!!

Warhammer 40,000

With the release of the above mentioned Codexes I figured there would be a bit REORG of the 40K armies and the possibility of playing might inspire me to get playing again.

I did pick up a few Aeldari miniatures from Ebay to fill out a few units...

I did pick up the Emperor's Children Launch Box

I assembled ONE of the Emperor's Children, but have yet to paint ANY 40K miniatures...

Work-in-Progress Wednesdays

the previous year I was posting pictures of my workbench every Wednesday... the idea was to force myself to engage more with the blog and hopefully motivate myself to paint SOMETHING each week so as not to be posting the same pictures EVERY WEEK...

As I seemed to be back to playing games and painting miniatures I didn't think it was a necessary practice to continue and considered dropping it...

I did.

Other Games

I acknowledged that, if playing some solo games, I might paint some miniatures for those games...

In reality it was OTHER GAMES that I did the MOST Painting for!? Mostly Bolt Action!?

So... 22 miniatures for Age of Sigmar (mostly for Soulbound!)... and 179 foot miniatures and 9 vehicles for World War Two...

AGAIN...  THIS is why I abandoned Annual plans... and the quarterly Game Plans are more "guidleines", at best!  Rigid plan would mean I wound end up feeling like I had FAILED, instead of celebrating the fact that I did DO THINGS... in fact, rigid plans of the past often meant I did NOTHING as i constantly flip-flopped back and forth between trying to force myself to do something I wasn't interested in anymore and NOT painting what I WANTED to paint (because I SHOULD be following the PLAN!).

I've since decided to try and "lean into strengths". My strength is my passionately move forward and be HIGHLY PRODUCTIVE with whatever I am interested in at the moment... unfortunately I have VERY LITTLE CONTROL over what I am interested in, in any given moment... I mean, there are ways I can sometimes try to keep myself focused on things to a certain degree (like PLANS, and actually PLAYING GAMES) but other times... not-so-much...

If, at the end of last year, you'd told me I was mostly going to paint World War Two stuff this first quarter... well... I wouldn't have laughed in your face or utterly denied the possibility... I DO know myself enough to know that NOTHING is IMPOSSIBLE... I would have thought it highly improbable and wondered how that might happen as the Second World War collection seemed, at the time, the LEAST likely to see use at any time in the immediate future... (despite having played a game of Five Men in Normandy in the previous year!?)

How did this happen!?

It largely was precipitated by the fact that the Second World War collection seemed, at the time, the LEAST likely to see use at any time in the immediate future!? I'd been going through the collections of miniatures and realizing I have more stuff that I will likely EVER be able to paint in my life and trying to figure out what things I could get rid of. I decided I would NEVER get around to painting the Americans I hadn't yet painted. I happened to mention this to my friend Orion who had some Tzaangors she was never going to paint and at the time I was still only really interested in Age of Sigmar so we did a little trade...

Of course... then she had some World War Two Americans and wanted to play with them and I had plenty of potential opponents... so... Now I'm playing World War Two games again!?

Balance Sheets

In the end, despite buying the Emperor's Children Lauch box and a BUNCH of new stuff for World War Two armies, I HAVE painted MORE than I have acquired... and managed to divest myself of a few of a few things that were just taking up space that I will never get to...

PAINTED

  • 28mm Foot: 199
  • 28mm Mounted/Beasties: 4
  • 28mm Vehicles/Monsters: 9
  • 28mm Endless Spells: 1

PURCHASED/ACQUIRED

  • 28mm Foot: 179
  • 28mm Vehicles: 19
  • 28mm Endless Spells: 17

DISPOSALS (Traded Away or Sold)

  • 28mm Foot (unpainted): 94
  • 28mm Vehicles (unpainted): 1
What I'd REALLY like to do is paint more than DOUBLE what I purchase this year... If I keep going at the same rate, and not buy ANYTHING this coming quarter, I could be in a place to do so!

GAME PLAN 2025 - Q2

GAMES

Warhammer Quest

This has been going extremely well... I can't forsee any reason we would stop? It will take a minimum of seven more sessions to complete the initial campaign in Cursed City (but more likely eleven or more). So, if we keep up the weekly schedule, we COULD be finished the initial Cursed City campaign by the end of this Quarter... but then there is the Night Wars expansion! I have no idea how many sessions that might take.

I do wonder what we'll do AFTER Night Wars... I know there were a few expansion scenarios in White Dwarf magazines... will I hunt those down (and buy a PILE of Ghouls to play them!?) Will we return to playing Blackstone Fortress (I'm not sure Finnegan would be as interested in that... and playing that might just shift my interests back to 40K and I'd ditch AoS entirely. Will there be a NEW Warhammer Quest this year?! It feels like we're due for one!? I had kind of hoped, with the release of the new edition of Age of Sigmar last year, there might have been a new Warhammer Quest - possibly set in Hammerhal again (with much of the narrative focus shifting back to Aqshy again!)

Role-Playing Games

Maybe we'll get the in-person Soulbound game going again...

World War Two - Bolt Action/Five Men at Kursk

I imagine I will play a lot of Bolt Action over the next Quarter. Despite some problems with the game, I've been having lot of fun playing it!

Five Men at Kursk....? That was fun and there were elements of it that I really liked (the solid Narrative Campaign systems!). But my mind has kind of moved on from that. I'd like to continue the Fourteen Men in the Solomons campaign, but playing at a larger scale of action, using Bolt Action... incorporating some of the narrative elements of the FiveCore games.

Other Warhammer Games - Age of Sigmar/Underworlds/40K

I haven't written all of these off entirely... I mean, I'm still playing Warhammer Quest, so some part of my brain is still interested in the Age of Sigmar setting.

I WOULD like to paint a few more Eldar and try them out in a game.

I have a LOT of Emperor's Children to paint before I'd have a useable force..

There's a part of me that kind of wants to pick up the new Astra Militarum codex and reorg all those armies to be ready for action...

Board Games

Wow... I really miss playing a lot of the board games we've played in the past... and I'd like to play more... but realistically..? I don't know if I have the time or energy to organize and play regular board games... AND play Warhammer Quest every week... AND play Bolt Action (or other miniatures games)... AND write up game reports... AND paint new miniatures for Bolt Action (or other miniatures games)... AND possibly organize and run a role-playing game...

Solo Miniature Games

It would be fun to continue the current solo games...

Paras in Normandy

Pulp Adventure

Five Parsecs from Home

I's also still LOVE to try out Devilry Afoote... and I've had SO MANY IDEAS about other campaigns I could play...

MINIATURES

What will I get up to the next few months...

World War Two - Bolt Action

This seems to be where things are mostly focused at the moment. I have been working on forces for the desert war in North Africa...

I've acquired a BUNCH of tanks to play in the sand with. That will probably be the primary focus for the Quarter.

I don't have any immediate plans to BUY any more stuff until the stuff I've acquired this year has is painted... and that's probably going to take most of this quarter to complete.

Of the stuff I've acquired this year and still have not painted, I have...

There are a few collections I might re-base, to bring them up to the current basing standards, and a few other things I already owned that need painting (like the Fallshirmjägers and a few other Germans - mostly late war regular army infantry and tanks that will likely be attached to my SS forces, and a few SAS/LRDG vehicles).

I'f ever I got the stuff listed above painted before the end of the quarter.. there are a few things I have on a wishlist I'd like to add to the forces I have.. Mostly tanks for the early war German and French armies and a few items for the Fallshirmjägers and French Foreign Legion - to make them more playable forces. Options for the Italians, and a few more vehicles for the SAS and/or LRDG - if I get the ones I have assembled and painted!)

Warhammer Games
Age of Sigmar/Underworlds/40K/Cursed City/Soulbound

Well Cursed City is still going strong, but I don't have a LOT to paint for it. (I do STILL need to finish Torgilius the Chamberlain!). If we finish up the Cursed City base game and move on to Night Wars, I will need to finish up a few more things... the Fell Bats and Radukar the Beast! Perhaps that interest could be expanded again into larger Age of Sigmar forces...? Maybe paint up some of the other Soulblight Gravelords when I work on these few things...?

Most of the adventures in Soulbound - at least in Brightspear, where the characters were adventuring - focus around Chaos foes - primarily the Disciples of Tzeentch, but also Skaven and Slaves to Darkness... So... If I get that going again...

I would, if nothing else, love to finish up the Harlequins I have for 40K... so many of them are just SO CLOSE to being finished... I don't know how I could motivate myself to do this?

Aside from the aforementioned Radukar the Beast, I have zero need or interest to buy any more at this point... I just want to get the stuff I have PAINTED and on the tabletop!?

Other Games

And there is always the possibility that I will decide I need to paint stuff for something else entirely... The most likely things would be for the Solo games - Sci-fi stuff for Five Parsecs from Home or Pulp Adventure stuff. Nothing NEW, just painting up things I already HAVE, but never got around to!

And that's it... Play some games, paint some stuff...

MOAR Italian Tanks!?

Part of the latest flurry of orders.. I did not expect these to arrive until April (because the seller's estimated arrival date was 25 March - 15 April!?

Two more Italian tank kits...

I haven't even finished assembling the FIRST ONE!?

(I like painting tracks before adding the track guard because it's easier to paint the track before rather than after...)

Ah, well... now maybe I can build and paint them together as a batch? Or perhaps I'll finish the first one and see how it compares to the one I have and then decide what to do with the other two!?

Of course, now I have to actually make some decisions about WHICH TYPE of tank to build them all as...

The kit can be built as an M13/40 tank, M14/41 tank, M40 Semovente, or M41 Semovente. I already have one medium Italian tank, which I THOUGHT was an M13/40 (I'm pretty sure that's what it was sold as!) but turns out it's probably an M14/41 (the most obvious visual difference is apparently the full track guard! internally it has a more powerful engine and ISN'T a slow tank in Bolt Action!)

I'd originally bought just one of these kits and thought I'd build it as one of the Semovente - just incase the model was a slightly different size, I figured the difference would be less obvious if it were completely different types of vehicle. Also, I'm not sure I was even considering Bolt Action (Third Edition) at the time, so whether playing an earlier edition of Bolt Action or something like Five Men at Kursk, there is really only a need for one vehicle of any particular type...

The original medium tank I have is a resin model that came as a one piece casting of hull and tracks and had its own internal base... which might make it taller than the others (I guess it could be the command tank...? I did leave the hatches open for that reason). As it turns out the plastic model IS just a smidge larger - by about a millimetre in each direction... not sure if this will be noticeable on the tabletop...

So I COULD conceivably build them all as M13/40... and end up with one M14/41 and three M13/40... which could be fielded as a platoon of three M13/40 in earlier parts of the war... or a platoon of four lead by a newer M14/41 - as those start to arrive as replacements...

Or maybe build one as an M14/41 and the other two as Semovente - so I could field understrength platoons of both of those vehicle types... (and hope the M14/41 look similar enough!)

I guess I have other stuff to paint while I think about it...

But also, I kind of want to get them DONE because last week we wrapped up our Operation Torch games and this week (last night!) I started playing games with my Italian forces against Orion's Americans in Tunisia (Stay tuned for After Action Report this weekend!) and kind of want these done sooner rather than later!!

The only other thing I'm waiting on from the orders placed a week and a half ago are the three Panzer III for the Afrikakorps.

And then there are the orders I placed THIS week... now, I had SWORN to Amanda I would not order ANYTHING else after the orders placed a week and a half ago until ALL of those things had arrived, were assembled and painted, and PLAYED WITH - which I expected to be by June or so...

I don't really buy much off ebay any more. Other than the few eldar I ordered earlier this year, I can't remember the last time I ordered anything off ebay... It's been a few years... However, around the time I was starting to think about WW2 stuff again, I did have a brief look around and... there wasn't much of interest... there was a LOT of people selling 3D printed stuff fairly inexpensively, but of wildly varrying quality... If found a few that look like they were printed at a fairly high resolution, were dirt cheap, and early war tanks. I put them on a wishlist, thinking I'd come back to them later in the year if it seemed like WW2 games ended up being a whole thing...

Apparently when you put stuff on a watch list of ebay, the seller sees that and can MAKE YOU OFFERS?! And so this week the seller of the 3D printed tanks, after months of those being in the watch list, made an offer!?

Now, I should point out that, while I do have my own ebay account, for reasons to convoluted to explain here, I usually use Amanada's account... and that's where the watch list was... and so it was AMANDA that got the offer....

Honestly, if Id gotten it, I probably would have deleted and moved on... (because I did make a promise not to buy more stuff and I really, REALLY wanted to try and keep it!!) But because Amanda got it, and she didn't ignore/automatically delete it and instead said "hey, is this something you're interested in...?" and not "WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU LOOKING AT MORE TOYS ON EBAY!?"... a conversation was had and I ENDED UP BUYING, NOT ONE, BUT BOTH?!?!

(because Amanda DOES understand a REALLY GOOD DEAL!)

And so... I now have MORE tanks on the way... like, TEN more tanks... five Matilda II and five Cruiser MkI (A9) tanks... for about $150 CAD including shipping!? $15 CAD per tank is just NUTS... The five Cruiser MkI (A9) tanks cost about the same as buying ONE from Warlord Games! It's a bit of a risk and they may turn out to be garbage (but the seller did had thousands of positive reviews...!?).

If it DOES work out, I'll be ready for some big tank battles in the desert (in a few months...)

WW2 - Corpsmans and Casualties.

(Sounds like a role-playing game from the early 80s!?)

Not entirely newly painted... I did just repaint the uniforms of most of these though. As the only marines I have that I'll likely ever make use of are the USMC raiders, I figured the casualty figures I have should probably get repainted to reflect the Frog Skin camouflage they're wearing, rather than the light olive drab they'd previously been painted wearing!

The Navy Corpsmen attached to the raiders I repainted a few of them, thinking that, as attachments, they may not necessarily have had the same uniform...?

All the Corpsmen and Casualties

The Naval Corpsmen

The Marine Raider Casualties!

I have the Gurkhas on the workbench this weekend, expect to see those painted, shortly.

I also got in a SECOND game of Bolt Action wtih Orion this week - we replayed the previous scenario, but in reverse - the Vichy trying to take the Oasis and High Points from the Americans!

WW2 - Taking Stock of the Chindits and Gurkhas

I have a small force of Commonwealth forces (British and Gurkhas) for fighting against the Japanese in the Far East. I guess they could just be called "14th Army" troops..?

All the forces. I just need to paint the two squads of Gurkhas to finish these!!

In Bolt Action, this could look like:

Chindit Rifle Platoon

Chindit Platoon Command - 39 points (Veteran) + 1 Man @13 = 52

Chindits Section NCO + 4 men 70 points (Veteran), +5 Men @14, + LMG @15 = 155

Chindits Section NCO + 4 men 70 points (Veteran), +5 Men @14, + LMG @15, + SMG @4 = 159

Medic 30 points (Veteran) + 1 man(mule?) @11  = 42

Light Mortar Team 39 points (Veteran)

Forward Observer 90 (Veteran), +1 Man @ 11pts = 101

Gurkha Rifle Platoon

Gurkha Platoon Command - 39 points (Veteran) + 1 Man @13 = 52

Gurkha Section NCO + 4 men 75 points (Veteran), +5 Men @15, + LMG @15 = 165

Gurkha Section NCO + 4 men 75 points (Veteran), +4 Men @15, + LMG @15 = 150

Chindit Heavy Weapons Platoon

Heavy Weapon Platoon Command 39 points (Veteran) + 1 Man(mule?) @13 = 52

Machine-Gun Team 65 points (Veteran)

Machine-Gun Team 65 points (Veteran)

TOTAL: 1097

Just over 1000 points! Yay!

I could lose the Forward Observer and be just under 1000!

Conveniently, one of the options for the Japanese forces (single platoon, no tanks) is also just under 1000 points - so I have two matched forces of primarily infantry - with no armour!

The mules I've treated as "extra men" with the Medic and Heavy Weapons Platoon Commander - I figure the mules would be carrying extra supplies for the medic or Heavy Weapons Platoon... could take a bullet for the medic or platoon commander and, in a desperate situation, could be ornery enough to deal a blow in close assault!?

The only plan I have for these right now is to finish painting the Gurkhas..

Not sure what I could even add to them? I guess a third squad of Gurkhas and/or Chindits? A Medium Mortar Team? Maybe an anti-tank rifle or PIAT? Sniper? (not sure where it'd GET some of these!?). Some combination of those could bring them to 1250...

Not going to worry about it for the moment!

WW2 - US Marine Corps Raiders

A few more soldiers of the Second World War rolling off the workbench this week!

An assortment of USMC Raiders from Warlord games.

These are joining a few raiders I already had (from Brigade Games, I think..?)

These new ones took WAY TOO LONG to paint!? I painted and repainted them ALL a few times as I just wasn't happy with the frog skin camouflage... It STILL doesn't QUITE match the previously painted ones (which were probably painted between 10-15 years ago!? with paints I made no notes about and likely no longer have!?)

I made notes this time!!

Just in case I buy more of them...

Which would be silly...

I have enough, now that I could organize these into an understrength platoon with a command team of three and three squads of eight... there are a CrAzY number of Thompson submachine-guns and B.A.R.s... I was wondering if I'd need to find some actual RIFLEmen to make something remotely historical... but according to the first edition rules for Marines - which doesn't have a listing for Marine Raiders, specifically - an early war squad can have 5-8 men and up to THREE submachine-guns and TWO BAR!?

In mid-late war the squads can have up to 12 men and THREE men can have BARs and three men can have SHOTGUNS?!

When my book arrives I'll figure out how many points this is for Bolt Action.

I have a handful of regular USMC (like, one infantry infantry squad and a four medics and four casualties) and I might just repaint their uniforms in the Frog Skin camouflage to look a little more the rest of these. There's no point in having ONE  squad of regular infantry, is there...? (Unless I was going to use them for Embassy guard duty in some pulp adventure game..?)

WW2 - Taking Stock of the Fallschirmjägers

This weekend I also took stock of the small force of Fallschirmjägers that I have - to see how close they might be to fielding a playable force for Bolt Action (Third Edition)... Or, at least, a force that is 1000-1250 points in Bolt Action (Third Edition) - as I really have no idea what makes a "good" or "playable" force in the game...

Of all the World War Two figures I have, this is one collection that has barely any of them painted!? MOST of the World War Two forces, with the exception of the Italians and DAK and my Desert Raider (SAS/LRDG) trucks, most, if not all are painted!

These I only ever painted a handful testing out schemes for camouflage jump smocks... and I could never decide if I wanted to paint them for early war - Blitzkrieg or Operations Sea Lion - or for use in Crete or North Africa or Italy... or for the Eastern Front...?

When I started considering finally getting them painted a few weeks ago, a part of me thought I should paint them for use in the Mediterranean.. but then returned to the idea of Operation Sea Lion (thanks in no small part to the fun little games Alan has been playing over at The Duchy of Tradgardland). Ultimately I've decided to go with a Mediterranean them for them - as much of the other stuff I'm working on is for the campaigns in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy - and I'll just have to enjoy Fallshirmjägers landing on Jolly Old England vicariously through Alan's blog.

As with the Japanese I took stock of earlier this weekend, Fallschirmjägers seem to have a preponderance of light machine-guns... and my initial plan was to try and incorporate ALL of them into a force of two platoons!?

This would look like:

1st Fallshirmjäger Platoon

Platoon Commander - 1st Lieutenant - 39pts (Veteran) + 1 men @13pts per man (Veteran) = 52pts

Fallshirmjäger Squad - 1 NCO and 4 men with Rifles 70pts (Veteran), light machine gun for +15pts, SMG for + 4 pts = 89

Fallshirmjäger Squad - 1 NCO and 4 men with Rifles 70pts (Veteran), light machine gun for +15pts, SMG for + 4 pts = 89

Fallshirmjäger Squad - 1 NCO and 4 men with Rifles 70pts (Veteran), light machine gun for +15pts, SMG for + 4 pts = 89

Forward Observer (air force or artillery) 90pts (Veteran), +2 men @14pts  = 118

Medic 30pts (Veteran)

Light Mortar Team 39pts (Veteran)

2nd  Fallshirmjäger Platoon

Heavy Weapons Platoon

Platoon Commander (2nd Lieutenant) 39pts (Veteran) - don’t actually HAVE a model for this… unless I grab one of those spares in the background!?

Machine Gun Team  - 65pts (Veteran)

Mortar Team -  45pts (Regular)

Total: 974pts

Soooo... pretty close to 1000 - which is a good place to start!

To this I could add…

+1 man in each squad (6) @ 14pts each = +84pts

+1 man to Heavy Weapons Platoon command = +13pts

Artillery Platoon

Platoon Commander - 1st Lieutenant - 39pts (Veteran) + 1 men @13pts per man (Veteran) = 52pts

2.8 cm schwere Panzerbüchse 41 - 65 (Veteran)

7.5 cm Leichtgeschütz 40 - 59pts (Veteran)

That would bring the total to 1247 points!

Or maybe add a company commander (instead of the extra men in the squads)...?

Or make the second platoon into pioneers? but maybe with just two squads?

I don't know... I guess there are a lot of ways to play around with this. The important thing is, I HAVE enough stuff that I can kind of pull off a 1000 point force if I got all this painted up. If I add an artillery platoon with two guns and a platoon commander and a handful of extra guys (which could be accomplished by ordering four pack sof minis from Perry Miniatures)... I can make it 1250...

Because I have NO IDEA if a larger number of understrength squads is better or worse than a smaller number of larger squads (and can kind of see advantages and drawbacks to both!) I wondered if I dropped two of the LMG teams and organized them all into a single platoon of slightly larger squads what that would look like:

(not going to lie, I'm not fond of prone LMG teams, which is also a reason I'm considering a single platoon of four squads - so I can ditch that MG team!)

Fallshirmjäger Platoon

Platoon Commander - 1st Lieutenant - 39pts (Veteran) + 2 men @13pts each (Veteran) = 65pts

Fallshirmjäger Squad - 1 NCO and 4 men with Rifles 70pts (Veteran), +1 Man @ 14pts , light machine gun for +15pts, SMG for + 4 pts = 103

Fallshirmjäger Squad - 1 NCO and 4 men with Rifles 70pts (Veteran), +1 Man @ 14pts , light machine gun for +15pts, SMG for + 4 pts = 103

Forward Observer (air force or artillery) 90pts (Veteran), +2 men @14pts  = 118

Medic 30pts (Veteran)

Light Mortar Team 39pts (Veteran)

Heavy Weapons Platoon

Platoon Commander (2nd Lieutenant) 39pts (Veteran) + 1 men @13pts (Veteran) = 52pts

Machine Gun Team  - 65pts (Veteran)

Mortar Team -  45pts (Regular)

TOTAL: 826pts

Again, to this I could add…

Artillery Platoon

Platoon Commander - 1st Lieutenant - 39pts (Veteran) + 1 men @13pts per man (Veteran) = 52pts

2.8 cm schwere Panzerbüchse 41 - 65 (Veteran)

7.5 cm Leichtgeschütz 40 - 59pts (Veteran)

Which would bring the total to 1002 points! Dammit! Where do I lose 2 points?!  One of the platoon commands loses one of their extra men, I guess…which would make it 989

What could I add to make it 1250, though…?

I have a few ideas... but for now this is all fine and I just need to work on painting these up and then acquiring the Schwere Panzerbüchse 41 and Leichtgeschütz 40 and additional platoon commanders... then I'll worry about what other options could be considered...

The three groups of three soldiers lurking in the background of the above pics that aren't really accounted for in the lists

Three random dudes that look like Pioneers...? One thing I might consider is making a two platoon force, but having the second platoon have only two squads of pioneers...? They would mostly be regular Fallschirmjägers with these three mixed into them - I can't seem to find any other Fallschirmjäger pioneers... and I have no idea where these even came from!? I thought they might be Bolt Action minatures from Warlord Games. But if Warlord made them in the past, they do not seem to any longer!

When I get to later parts of the war, I can add in these guys with FG42s...

Three guys with captures weapons... There were five in the pack the other two were a guy with a soviet submachinegun (which i left on another table and forgot to include in the pick) and a guy with a rifle (possibly a soviet one? it was close enough so he's hiding in one of the regular squads.... I might use the guy with the thompson... I don't care for the prone one with the sten (because he's on an odd-sized base) and the one with the M1 Carbine looks like that rifle barrel is going to break off... which I HATE...

Speaking of broken barrels... this is why I may end up using the Thompson! (and an additional reason to go with the single platoon)... GAH!?

There will probably be more of this in the next few weeks as I figure out what I might need - if anything - for each collection...

WW2 - Taking Stock of the Japanese!

Stepping away from the North African desert, for a moment, I thought I'd try and sort out what I have for Japanese and whether it would be useable in Bolt Action (Third Edition).

I have been using the Japanese, lately, in our Fourteen Men in the Solomons campaign. I recently added a Chi-Ha tank to the force, thinking it could be a considerable challenge for the men of First Platoon, Company J, 25th Regiment, 93rd Infantry Division to deal with!

I have... some options...

I somehow have a LOT of Light Machine-Gun Teams and Light Mortars and Officers!? I first wondered if there was a way I could incorporate ALL of those!?

My initial thought was an understrength COMPANY of two wildly understrength platoons!?

This would look like:

Company Commander - 60 pts (Regular)
Runner/Batman (2) @10pts (Regular)= +20 pts

Medic 23pts (Regular)

1st Rifle Platoon

Platoon Commander - 1st Lieutenant - 30pts (Regular)
Runner/Batman (2) @10pts (Regular)= +20 pts

Infantry Section 1 NCO and 4 men with Rifles 50pts (Regular)
light machine gun for +15pts
= 65

Infantry Section 1 NCO and 4 men with Rifles 50pts (Regular)
light machine gun for +15pts
= 65

Infantry Section 1 NCO and 4 men with Rifles 50pts (Regular)
light machine gun for +15pts
= 65

Grenadier Section 1 NCO and 4 men with Rifles 50pts (Regular)
2 additional men at +10pts each = +20
3x Light Mortars @20 = +60
=130

Forward Observer - (artillery) 75pts (Regular)
Radio Operator +11pts per man (Regular) +22

Suicide Anti-Tank 20 pts (Regular)

2nd Rifle Platoon

Platoon Commander - 2nd Lieutenant - 30pts (Regular)
Runner/Batman (2) @10pts (Regular)= +20 pts

Infantry Section 1 NCO and 4 men with Rifles 50pts (Regular)
light machine gun for +15pts
= 65

Infantry Section 1 NCO and 4 men with Rifles 50pts (Regular)
light machine gun for +15pts
= 65

Infantry Section 1 NCO and 4 men with Rifles 50pts (Regular)
5 additional men at +10pts each = +50
submachine gun for +4pts
light machine gun for +15pts
=119

Grenadier Section 1 NCO and 4 men with Rifles 50pts (Regular)
2 additional men at +10pts each = +20
3x Light Mortars @20 = +60
=130

Forward Observer - (air force) 75pts (Regular)
Radio Operator +11pts per man (Regular) +22

Suicide Anti-Tank 20 pts (Regular)

Heavy Weapons Platoon

Platoon Commander (2nd Lieutenant) - 30pts (Regular)

Machine Gun Team  - 50pts (Regular)

Mortar Team -  45pts (Regular)

Armoured Platoon

Chi-Ha Medium Tank (+Command vehicle) 145pts  (Regular)

Chi-Ha Medium Tank 135pts  (Regular)

Total:  1546pts!?

Wow... that DOES add up to quite a bit! The Company Command and two Rifle Platoons on their own add up to over 1000 points.

I do have a second mortar I could add to the heavy weapons platoon. With that addition and no tanks, I'd have 1203... but that leaves the force without much in the way of anti-armour capabilities - save for the suicide bombers... and.. I HAVE a tank, I'd like to USE it!?

I'm not 100% sure I can even TAKE two forward observers...? From the pages on Warlord Communitys website explaining Force Composition, it looks like in a Rifle Platoon you can take 0-1 Forward Observers - I didn't see any mention of there being only one allowed per force.. but Orion seemed to think it was only one per force...?

The next idea i had was... What if I didn't use ALL of those LMGs and Mortars and Officers and tried to just fill out something closer to a full-size rifle platoon, with what I have.

This would look like:

Company Commander - 60 pts (Regular), +2
extra men @10pts (Regular)= 80 pts

Rifle Platoon

Platoon Commander - 1st Lieutenant - 30pts (Regular)
Runner/Batman (2) @10pts (Regular)= 50 pts

Infantry Section 1 NCO and 4 men with Rifles 50pts (Regular)
5 additional men at +10pts each = +50
light machine gun for +15pts
= 115

Infantry Section 1 NCO and 4 men with Rifles 50pts (Regular)
5 additional men at +10pts each = +50
light machine gun for +15pts
=115

Infantry Section 1 NCO and 4 men with Rifles 50pts (Regular)
5 additional men at +10pts each = +50
submachine gun for +4pts
light machine gun for +15pts
=119

Grenadier Section 1 NCO and 4 men with Rifles 50pts (Regular)
5 additional men at +10pts each = +50
3x Light Mortars @20 = +60
=160

Forward Observer - (air force or artillery) 75pts (Regular)
 +2
extra men @11 (Regular) = 97

Light Mortar Team 30pts (Regular)

Suicide Anti-Tank 20 pts (Regular)

Medic 23pts (Regular)

Heavy Weapons Platoon

Platoon Commander (2nd Lieutenant) - 30pts (Regular)

Machine Gun Team  - 50pts (Regular)

Medium Mortar Team -  45pts (Regular)

Medium Mortar Team -  45pts (Regular)

Armoured Platoon

Chi-Ha Medium Tank (+Command vehicle) 145pts  (Regular)

Chi-Ha Medium Tank 135pts  (Regular) - which I don't actually HAVE right now... but would need to field an Armoured Platoon!

Total:  1259pts

Without the Armour, that comes to 979 points...

That does leave a bunch of left-over machine-run teams and light mortars and a few officers and observers... But maybe that's okay... this second option has a force that's just shy of 1000 points and one that's just over 1250. The former maybe I could add a helper or two for the medic (change one of the suicide AT guys into a guy carrying satchels full of medical supplies?!) - which would bring it to 999. For the latter... drop a second guy from the Heavy Weapon Platoon Commander and that would bring it to 1249!

I'm not 100% sure having FOUR light mortars and two medium mortars is the greatest idea... but it's what I have... The mortar I used in our first game wasn't particularly useful...

Now all I need is that second Chi-Ha Medium Tank I have in the list!!

(I've also been taking stock of the German Fallschirmjägers... I'll probably be posting my plans for them as well soon!)

February Games

I played some games in  February... Here's what I played!

Saturday, 1 February 2025

Kicking off the month, we FINALLY got back to playing out online Soulbound game... The entire session was the players fighting a Putrid Blightking!! YIKES they are TOUGH! I've basically been using Warhammer Quest: Shadows over Hammerhal... and the room they were in had just one, but after a round or two the north wall was supposed to just crumble revealing TWO MORE!? I decided NOT to do that, as that would have likely ended them!

This ended up being the ONLY session we managed to play this month (for the Online Campaign). We did meet up one other Saturday, but I'd been having a rough week and we just ended up chatting for a couple hours... Maybe next month.

Sunday, 2 February 2025

Sunday afternoon Orion returned for a second game in our Fourteen Men in the Solomons campaign (using Five Men at Kursk!). This week the men of First Platoon, Company J, 25th Regiment, 93rd Infantry Division went on a patrol and encountered a sniper!

The full after action report can be read here:

Fourteen Men in the Solomons - Patrol - 23 June 1943

Tuesday, 4 February 2025

This week's Soulbound adventure saw the characters starting the Faltering Light adventure in earnest. They were introduced to the main players, the broken Realm Gate and began to explore the city of Brightspear!

Wednesday, 5 February 2025

The following evening we were back to playing Warhammer Quest: Cursed City! Initially , Amanda and Finnegan had discussed taking along their newly levelled up 2nd Level heroes... as they would cause others to gain experience faster... but in the end decided to just go with the four remaining Level One characters. Along the way, I noted what the difference in the encounters would have been... and they were glad to have only brought the first level characters.

you can read all about the adventure here:

Warhammer Quest: Cursed City - Session Thirteen - Deliverance Journey

Sunday, 9 February 2025

Initially I'd planned to play Fourteen Men in the Solomons with Orion, but Orion had a last minute changed of plans, so I finally tried out FiveCore Pulp Adventure on my own! It was a lot of fun! You can read about the Adventure here:

FiveCore Pulp Adventure - In the Sands of Arabia

Tuesday, 11 February 2025

In the afternoon Orion stopped by to play through the next scenario in our Five Men at Kursk campaign (Fourteen Men in the Solomons)

You can read the full After Action Report here:

Fourteen Men in the Solomons - Skirmish at Smith Ridge

Initially, Orion was to return with Nick in the evening to play Soulbound... but I just wasn't feeling it and had FiveCore games on the brain and offered to run a game of FiveCore Pulp Adventure... and initially Orion was interested... but then Nick was feeling sick, so they decided to stay home...

Somehow I DID convince Amanda and Finnegan to give it a try and I ran a little one-off game for them (maybe...? or maybe it will turn into an occasional campaign!?)

you can read the full game report here:

FiveCore Pulp Adventure - Cult of Cthulhu

Wednesday, 19 February 2025

We'd missed playing a game of Warhammer Quest: Cursed City the previous week because, after the two games of FiveCore the day before, I was a little gamed out... This week we also missed our Soulbound game because Orion was out of town.

This week we were back at it!

You can see the whole game report here:

Warhammer Quest: Cursed City - Session Fourteen - Deliverance Journey

Tuesday, 25 February 2025

After a few weeks off, we were back to playing Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soulbound on Tuesday! This week the party located the guide and began their explorations of the undercity in Brightspear!

And I forgot to take a picture during the game... AGAIN... I'd even had a sticky note on my GM screen...

Wednesday, 26 February 2025

This week we finally played the first of the decapitation journeys to take out one of the named characters in Warhammer Quest: Cursed City!

You can read all about the adventure here:

Warhammer Quest: Cursed City - Session Fifteen - Shuffling Horrors

Friday, 28 February 2025

Finally, Friday afternoon, Orion and I tried out our first game of Bolt Action (Third Edition)!? I have to admit, I was a little apprehensive about playing Bolt Action... My general feeling from having played it... a decade ago...? was that it wasn't awesome and I didn't have a lot of fun. Maybe I was just souring on World War Two in general - from having played too much Flames of War (and SO MANY other WW2 games!? Blitzkrieg Commander, Tactical Commander, WRG rules 1925-1950, I Ain't Been Shot Mum, Disposable Heroes, etc, etc, etc...) over the decade before that... Maybe it was just the people I was playing with...? I don't know. I had a LOT of fun playing this and think it has a lot of potential - looking forward to playing MORE!

You can read all about it here:

WW2 - Bolt Action: Operation Torch (Part 1?)

Hopefully there will be more in the coming month(s)!?

And that's it!

In total, this month I have played:

  • Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soulbound x3 (one online, two in-person)
  • Warhammer Quest: Cursed City x3
  • FiveCore Pulp Adventure x2 (one solo, one game-mastered)
  • Five Men at Kursk WW2 Skirmish Warfare x2
  • Bolt Action (Third Edition) x1

So far this year, I've played:

  • Warhammer Quest: Cursed City x8
  • Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soulbound x7
  • Five Men at Kursk WW2 Skirmish Warfare x3
  • FiveCore Pulp Adventure x2
  • Five Men in Normandy .30 Cal edition x2
  • Patchwork x2
  • Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Crypt Hunters x2
  • Lost Patrol x1
  • Warhammer Age Of Sigmar (Fourth Edition): Core Rules x1
  • Bolt Action (Third Edition) x1

I DID get a LOT painted this month...

Foot:

Vehicles:

FIVE Vehicles and over ONE HUNDRED foot miniatures!? (a LOT of those were started BEFORE February... this is just when I happened to finish them off!). So far my total for the year is 152 foot! Not bad... Not at all what I was PLANNING to paint this year... but not bad...

The best part is, I've only bought 42 foot and three vehicles!

(I did receive another 49 in trade, but in the process got rid of nearly 100 foot and two vehicles!!)

WW2 - Taking Stock of the Afrika Korps

With the renewed interest in the Second World War, I've been taking stock of things and seeing what I have that I can finish up to make into a playable force, and what I might need to add to make forces I have playable (in Bolt Action - Third Edition), and so far I have been focusing on forces that fought in the desert war in North Africa (primarily because I recently bought a Desert Game Matt... and didn't bother to get one that would be useful for European fields or jungles of the Pacific...)

Having mostly sorted out the Italians... I thought I'd shift focus to the Deutsches Afrikakorps - my small collection of Germans for the North African campaign. I am sticking with Axis forces (rather than working on an allies force to oppose my Italians) largely because my sole opponent has an American army, so working on forces that can face the Americans!

This force, as with most of my other 28mm World War Two forces had their genesis in Pulp Adventure/Weird War gaming with Savage Worlds over fifteen years ago - before Bolt Action was even released! After the release of Bolt Action, I did try to add things to the forces to make them playable with those rules - which mostly focused around a solitary Infantry platoon - with lots of potential support options.

I didn't really get around to doing this with the Afrika Korps before mostly abandoning 28mm World War Two when interests shifted and I coudln't find anyone that wanted to play World War Two games in 28mm (most locals that were interested were still playing Flames of War - or other games making use of 15mm minatures)

This is what I have ready for the Duetsches Afrikakorps, a lot of which was painted recently

this is all the Nazis-in-the-Desert stuff that I have - including some more Pulp-y characters and such.

This is the force I can currently use in Bolt Action...

This is what that might look like in Bolt Action (maybe.. I don't have the rules yet, I am basing this on all the lists I do have access to, they all seem to be the same across armies for Regulars - except when special rules apply - like "tough fighter" or whatever):

Rifle Platoon

Platoon Commander - 1st Lieutenant - 30pts (Regular)
Runner/Batman (2) @10pts (Regular) = +20

Infantry Section 1 NCO and 4 men with Rifles 50pts (Regular)
1 additional men at +10pts each = +10
Submachine gun for +4pts
light machine gun for +15pts
= 79 points

Infantry Section 1 NCO and 4 men with Rifles 50pts (Regular)
1 additional men at +10pts each = +10
Submachine gun for +4pts
light machine gun for +15pts
= 79 points

Infantry Section 1 NCO and 4 men with Rifles 50pts (Regular)
1 additional men at +10pts each = +10
Submachine gun for +4pts
light machine gun for +15pts
= 79 points

Infantry Section 1 NCO and 4 men with Rifles 50pts (Regular)
1 additional men at +10pts each = +10
Submachine gun for +4pts
light machine gun for +15pts
= 79 points

Forward Observer - (air force or artillery) 75pts (Regular)
Radio Operator +11pts per man (Regular)

Heavy Weapons Platoon

Platoon Commander (2nd Lieutenant) - 30pts (Regular)
Runner/Batman @10pts  (Regular)= +20 points

Machine Gun Team  - 50pts (Regular)

Mortar Team -  30pts (Regular)

TOTAL: 612

STILL TO DO

I still have a few things I could paint up to make a rather ad hoc "armoured platoon". these include:

Panzer IV - a later one (like F2..?) with the longer barrel. These, I think, were only available in the later stages of the war in North Africa...

An Sdkfz 222 armoured car.

Panzer I - they had quite a few of these in North Africa - expecially at the beginning of it all in 1941!

I have no idea how many points this might add... hopefully enough to get to 1000 points

Stuff to Get

There are a number of items I would still like to get for this force.

Primarily some more appropriate armour and some anti-tank weapons!

Armour could include a few more Panzer I, Panzer II and Panzer III - in earlier models that would be appropriate for North Africa (most of the Panzer III easily available - and least expensive - are the J and later versions - which would have only showed up at the very end of the campaign - or were only used in Europe in the later part of the war),

A few anti-tank weapons would be handy - Pak 36 and Pak 38... maybe even an Anti-Tank Rifle team...? If I get these, though, I'd need an Artillery Platoon Commander!?

I could get some more infantry to fill out the Infantry platoons (two packs of six from Perry Miniaures would be 12 and add three to each squad bringing them to NINE, which is plenty... that would also add 120 points, right there!)

Ideally some transportation...? but not entirely necessary... most transport would have likely been dismounted from and left far enough behind that it would remain off the table, if on the advance - and even further behind if defending!

Not something that this force could use on the tabletop... but I wouldn't mind getting a mess of 1/72 German aircraft and painting them in desert colours - to use as objectives/targets for raids by the LRDG/SAS

WHEN am I going to get any of these?! I have no idea... I need to finish painting the last few things I have (the two tanks and armoured car). Then we'll see...

This feels a little like a repeat of the post from a week or so ago... I mostly did this because I was reexamining the force and actually trying to put points to them in anticipation of playing SOON!! Also, I was taking a BUNCH of new pictures for the new WW2 - Afrika Korps Gallery, which you can see here:

WW2 - Afrika Korps

Also, I recently made a new Gallery for all the Italians:

WW2 - Italy

The plan is to keep those up-to-date as I finish things off...

WW2 Soviet Scouts

I realized, recently, that the ONLY Russian models I had that weren't painted were a handful of scouts I picked up from Bad Squiddo Games a few years back and I thought this an excellent opportunity to just finish off all the Russians! This partly came about because I'd been flipping through the Warsaw is Burning - the Poland 1939 campaign book for Five Men at Kursk... which prompted me to look through the Russian collection and realize I had only these left to paint!

I also got it in my head that it would be interesting to play a little solo Five Men at Kursk campaign following a squad of Scouts that were mostly carrying out sneaky-beaky missions...

New Minis from Bad Squido Games.

I'd LOVE to get a pile more of the Soviet women they produce... but I already have SO MANY RUSSIANS!?

While I was at it, I also carved the sights of these two and repainted them... they were in a brown camouflage and I did not like it... also, I have FAR TOO MANY Russians sniper and next to NO Scouts with Rifles.

All the Scouts

It's weird that almost all the Russian Scouts I can find have sub-machineguns - I was looking through a book about the organization of the Russian Army in World War Two and it suggested that the scout platoons were only ever armed with rifles. Later in the war there was a Sub-Machinegun Company (I think at the Regimental Level)... but it looked like the scouts were, on paper at least, still just armed with rifles?!

Organizing these for Bolt Action...

Sniper Team

Forward Observer Team (although they really need some method of communicating their observations to the battery - or air wing... probably need a spool of wire and a field telephone...)

Scout Squad

I could split the squad and add an officer and I'd have a basic  understrength platoon!

I guess I'll have to wait until my rulebook shows up and I can start figuring out how I'll organize all the Soviets... Stay tuned for that!!

(Okay... If I'm being 100% honest... I also have a little metal Russian tank that isn't painted... I'm not sure where I got it from. I think it's from the old Battle Honors WW2 line (which doesn't seem to be produced anymore)? I don't really count it as I don't think I'm EVER going to assemble and paint it... Maybe I should give it away... Maybe I could melt it down...?)
