More of Montrose’s Irish

This was my entry for round four of the Lead Adventure Forum’s Lead Painter’s League. This lot  finishes up two units of Montrose’s Irish for my ECW Scots Royalist force for The Pikeman’s Lament.

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version):

The latest batch (well… they were painted a few weeks ago, but I couldn’t post them unit the round was over). This is the picture I submitted for round four of the Lead Painters League (I happen to have won that round). Most are from Warlord Games, but I think there’s an old foundry figure hiding in there somewhere.

Here is the complete unit of Shot including six figures from the batch above and six from the previous lot

Here is the complete unit of Pike including four figures from the batch above and the eight I posted a few weeks back.

The two units together.

I have another two units of Irish to finish up - another Pike and another Shot. But they are made up of figures from Eureka Miniatures (which I ordered from Eureka Miniatures USA). The rest of the force will likely be made up of highlanders and possibly some Gordon Horse at some point…?

This week’s entry (which won’t be posted here until next week) are some Pirates. There was another THEME ROUND this week – “Ship’s Crew”. I’d thought of doing some sci-fi figures I’ve been wanting to get to – to use as the bridge crew for a Rogue Trader vessel… but they were fancy-schmansy Hasslefree Miniatures minis and I was running short on time and didn’t want to have to rush them… so I went with regular old 17th/18th century historical pirates. (it sort of fits in with what I’ve been working on…)

Hard to say. I promised myself I wouldn’t assemble or paint any more jet bikes until I finished Rick’s Robot… I do have those other Irish to work on… I don need to get a crew ready for NEXT WEEKS Lead Painter League submission…

Oh! I know – it will probably be a round-up of the last two months tabletop gaming!

After that, things are less certain…

Montrose’s Irish Shot

This was my entry for round three of the Lead Adventure Forum’s Lead Painter’s League. It’s half a unit of shot for The Pikeman’s Lament. This week’s entry is a mix of Pike and Shot to finish up this unit as well as the previously posted pike. I’ll have pictures of the complete units next week.

Montrose’s Irish Pike

This was my entry for round two of the Lead Adventure Forum’s Lead Painter’s League. It’s not a complete unit of twelve for The Pikeman’s Lament because I didn’t have enough figures for a  complete unit at the time I painted them. This week’s entry is a group of Shot (about half a units worth - for the same reason) and next weeks entry is a batch of four Pike and six Shot to finish off BOTH units.

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version):

Irish Pike from Warlord Games. The flag is hand-painted and based off one of the paper flags included with the Warlord Games Montrose Irish box set.

Perhaps the Irish Shot…? Or an assortment of other odd and sundry items that have crept onto the workbench and ended up with paint on them…?

I didn’t do a Boardgame Roundup for March – so I’ve been working on one for March AND April (but I won’t be posting that for another week and a bit – It’ll be a big ‘un, as I’ve been playing a LOT of boardgames lately!)

Irish Shot – for DBA-x

More English Civil Warriors – but this time and element of Irish for my Scots Royalist DBA-x army!

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version):

These guys are all from Warlord Games.

I’ve got enough for four more elements like these. I have some Irish Pike for the force as well, although I messed up with the math – originally I’d intended to have two elements of 8 figures each (like I’ve done for all the other pike for the ECW) but I had a bit of a brain-fart and the packs I thought would cleverly add up to 28 (12 for a unit for The Pikeman’s Lament and 16 for two 8-figure elements for DBA) turned out to only have 24…. Dagnabbit! So I’m short four… Ah well, it’ll probably be a while before I get to all of these anyway.

I’ve been having a hankering to play some DBA or HotT lately – maybe even a CAMPAIGN of sorts?! I have enough figures for FOUR English Civil War armies – Scots Royalists, Scots Covenanters, English Parliamentarians, and English Royalists. Only the Scots Covenanters are done - and I could cobble together enough English for one army. They saw action against each other a couple years back at the Battle of Black Adder Moor.

I have an entire English army to paint up, and there’s almost as much to do with the Scots Royalists. In addition to this element, I have the aforementioned three other elements of Shot, two elements of Pike (whether I do them with eight, as originally intended, or just go with the six per stand that I have remains to be seen), and three or four elements of Highland clansmen (I think they are listed a Warband), a Knight element, and Artillery element and an element of Psiloi. I do have ONE element of Highlanders done, and and element of Light Horse…

Coming soon on Tim’s Miniature Wargaming Blog:

Probably not another DBA element for a while… I’m trying to focus on the forces for The Pikeman’s Lament!

Very likely the next post will be a battle report. My friend Aaron is dropping his boys off for the day tomorrow (as they seem to have the day off from school…?) and I thought I might try to set up a game for them… Maybe Lion Rampant or Dragon Rampant…? I think those would be the easiest to run… though I could possibly have a go at The Men Who Would Be Kings with my Zulu War stuff… Or I could cobble together a couple of smaller forces for The Pikeman’s Lament. They have 40K armies - which I’ve played with them - a few times… and I have to admit, I just don’t love it… so I think it’s time to introduce them to some BETTER games… (Of course I'm not sure Aaron’s going to like me anymore if they come home and tell him “DAD! WE NEED ZULUS – THOUSANDS OF THEM!”)

Skythian Horse Archer, Irish Wolfhounds, Wardancers and Mice

A few odd and sundry items I’ve been working on while watching Spartacus the last few evenings.

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version):

This is a female Skythian archer from RAFM. I started painting this the first time I thought I’d try and run a Cthulhu Invictus game back in the summer. Amanda had planned on running a Skythian Horse Archer.

I also happened to have a very similar looking Wargames Foundry MOUNTED female Skythian horse archer – so I thought I’d paint her up the same so Amanda would have a mounted version of her figure for when she rode into battle on her horse (as all Skythian Horse Archers should!)

Luckily, as they depict the same character, they should never be on the table at the same time… because when standing next to each other the difference in scale is noticeable!

More Mice from Reaper Miniatures

Some Irish Wolfhounds and a pack master from Crusader Miniatures - I thought it might be fun to try an animal-based warband in A Song of Blades and Heroes (or perhaps Song of Arthur and Merlin?)

I found three more Wood Elf Wardancers that I’d missed when I painted the rest. The figures are from Games Workshop.

The entire troupe of War Dancers.

That may very well be it for painting this year… unless I finish up something while finishing off the final season of Spartacus…

Irish Kerns

I know, I said I was pretty much done with the Medieval stuff… I has started these before that post and rather than shuffle them back off to their storage boxes half-painted I decided to quickly finish them off before forging ahead with new things.

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version):

Medieval Irish Kerns from Crusader Miniatures. There was supposed to be eight in the pack, but I only seem to have gotten seven. I’ll hassle them about it in the new year – perhaps when I order stuff from them again. North Star Figures (which distributes Crusader) decided to move warehouses in the middle of xmas rush season. I imagine that has caused no end of nightmares – so I just couldn’t go hassling them right now to send out a single figure they missed when they are likely up to their necks in orders they need to fill!

I like these figures – as with most Crusader stuff (maybe some of the WW2 stuff is a bit on the chunky side – even for me…) – but it’s kind of an odd pack with one in four sculpts being a dude with his foot on a head… If I were to make units of them – one quarter of all the units would be resting their foots on beheaded heads… a grisly scene – to be sure - that would strike fear into the hearts of their enemies… but… I don’t know… I think it would look weird. As it turns out I won’t be making entire units with these, I just bought the one pack to mix in with all the Irish I already have – to give them a bit of variety.

Coming soon on Tim’s Miniature Wargaming Blog:

There’s some Great War figures on my workbench – some from Great War Miniatures to finish up the 7th Infantry Brigade – others are newly arrived from  Brigade Games and will make up the 9th Infantry Brigade. I also have a small handful of Ancient/Mythical Greeks which I’d like to finish up as they are the only remaining ones I have to finish up (well… that are individually based… I have many, MANY more that are to be painted and put together on multi-figure bases to make armies for DBA/HOTT.

I also have in my hot little hands the new draft of Galleys and Galleons – so expect another game report of that in the next few days.

The kids finished up the last of their activities today so for the next three weeks we got nothing going on but gamin’ and reading and painting miniatures and maybe watching a few movies… (and if Amanda has any say about it, I’ll be building a few more bookshelves…). So there should be plenty of painting updates and game reports in the coming weeks.

I’ll also be writing some posts about plans for the upcoming year.
