40 Days of 40K - Part Two

The next batch of drawings from the 40 Days of 40K. I haven't gotten one done EVERY day... No one said it had to be forty CONSECUTIVE days!?

This is Lt. Anwar Al’Saphira  - Commander - First Platoon, 5th Company, 382nd Tallarn (Desert Raider) Regiment. depicted here at the beginning of the deployment to Xoxigar Secondus, a vital forge world in the Imperium Nihilus.

(you can find the miniature it's based on here: Tallarn Desert Raiders Page)

Drukhari

Wych Cult Succubus checking messages after a match in the fighting pits of Commorragh... or maybe during a real space raid... I wonder if Drukhari communicators get good signal in real space... Probably depends on how far they stray from the Webway...

Probably should have added some blood splatter... Ah, well...

Adeptus Mechanicus - Sicarian Ruststalker Princeps

Sister of Battle

A Battle Sister of the Adepta Sororitas

Yikes! I might have gone a little overboard on the shading... moving on though.

If you want to keep up with the (almost) daily drawings as they are done, I'm posting them...

Friendly Fire on Xoxigar Secondus

Xoxigar Secondus
4.037.019.M42

After a lengthy warp translation, the men and women of the 382nd Tallarn (Desert Raider) Regiment finally made it to the Xoxigar System. Other Guard regiments were in the System; the shattered remains of two Valhallan Regiments had taken up post on the frozen world of Xoxigar Prime - little action was expected there. The 222nd Guaiacan Commando Regiment was already in the thick of the fighting in the Jungles of Xoxigar Tertium. The Tallarn were earmarked for Xoxigar Secondus. There had been little fighting there, so far. They were being sent to bolster the planets PDF and Skitarii Legions and protect the vital installations of the forge world.

The travel to the planet and shuttling dirtside took too long, but the troops of Tallarn were happy to stand on solid ground and see the sky - though the air wasn't much of an improvement...

The 5th Company was stationed in the Southern Hemisphere, near vital promethium refining facilities and were set to patrolling the sprawling brownfield that surrounded the region. It reminded them much of home; dry and desert like, great patches of utterly toxic wasteland. Husks of long deserted communities. Word had come down from above that Ork landings had been confirmed on both Xoxigar Secondus and Tertium, and Tyranids were confirmed to have landed (in small numbers) on Xoxigar Tertium - but they were to maintain their vigilance and keep an eye out for ANY xenos presence.

On this day, Lt. Anwar Al’Saphira of First Platoon, 5th Company, was making an initial reconnaissance patrol of his platoons area of operations. He took out two squads and had support from the regiment's Mounted Reconnaissance Squadron and a tank from #2 (Arkan) Troop, 2 Squadron 451st Tallarn Tank Regiment. There was not expected to be any enemy presence in the area. There was not expected to be ANYONE in the area - it had been depopulated ages ago, and was therefore a Free Fire Zone. If they ran into anyone out there, it wasn't likely they'd be friendly.

As Lt. Al'Saphira approached an abandoned village - not even marked on his map - he received a panicked signal from the mounted patrol. They claimed to have spotted hostiles approaching the village from the other side. They were shrouded in some strange mist or smoke, but the patrol leader claimed he had spotted soldier shambling along in definitely non-human-like gait. He was quite certain they were the "Nee-Crones" he had read about in his Imperial Infantryman's Uplifting Primer.

There had been no indication in the intelligence briefings that there had been any Necron activity on this planet, or the system, or even the sector! Al'Saphira scanned the horizon with his magnoculars and sure enough he spied grey metallic monstrosities shambling towards the village - and his patrol. He had his missile teams fire a couple of long range shots to keep their heads down and rushed towards the village!

SCENARIO

The scenario we played was the "Patrol" Narrative Scenario out of the main rule book - as it seemed to best fit the narrative for this little encounter.

THE GAME

DEPLOYMENT

Lt. Al'Saphira  rushed his troops up to a low wall at the edge of the village. Hostiles could be seen climbing ruined tower at the other edge of the village. first squad started taking fire from them right away - though the fire was initially infective.

ROUND ONE

The sound of heavy foot falls could be heard comping around the south side of the village and great billowing clouds of smoke and dust could be seen riding above the buildings to the right. Al'Saphira figured this was some sort of xenos armour and his troops would be safer taking cover in the village and let the tank deal with the enemy armour!

ROUND TWO

As first squad made their way up the street the fire from the snipers in the tower became more intense and two of the Tallarn soldiers went down as casualties. A second group of hostiles was spotted entering the village through a gate opposite the central square - their fire was even more intense and deadly - the remaining members of the squad were all cut down as they tried to dash for cover in the narrow alley.

The Second Squad arrived and quickly moved up to support the Lieutenant and his command squad - who were now feeling quite exposed!

The Roughriders also made their appearance and immediately charge the giant grey-metallic, Xenos  monstrosities they had spotted flanking around the south side of the village.

They managed to take down one of the monstrosities and severely damage a second... But then the entire patrol was cut to shreds by a vicious counterattack!

ROUND THREE

The Hostiles in the village square poured fire down on the building Lt. Al'Saphira and his squad of four veterans had taken cover in. The fire was heavy and accurate - all four of his guard were injured and put out of action by this fire...

Second squad moved into the building and tried to bring fire down on the xenos scum in the middle of town, but their fire was wholly ineffective. The square was filled with a foul-smelling smoke and it was hard to get a bead on one of them. When they did, it was like their las blasts just bounced right off their armour. The unstoppable horde of robots surged forward - truly, these MUST be the frightful "Nee-Crones" they had read about in the Imperial Infantryman's Uplifting Primer!

Their supporting tank finally made it's way to the village and poured fire down on the large two-legged monstrosities... but failed to take even one of them out! (seriously - TWENTY rounds of punisher gatling fire, nine rounds of heavy bolter fire... two wounds...). The tank was then savage by some arcane xenos weaponry

 ROUND FOUR

The Horde of Xenos Atomatons swarmed the Lieutenant's position and mercilessly mauled his remaining squad - not one was left standing...

At that moment Lt. Al'Saphira heard his Company Commander calling over the vox-caster; "Hold Fire! Hold Fire! There is a patrol of Mechanicus Skitarii in your AO - We believe that may be who you are currently engaging! They were to meet with you for a joint patrol, but the regimental staff forgot to pass on the info!" It seemed the Skitarii had received the same message about the same time through their own chain of command as their assaults stopped immediately, and they retired back to the edge of the village...

Checking on his casualties, he found one of his command squad and five others from the two squads of his platoon had been killed outright. Seven were severely injured and required immediate medical evac. The rest were all wounded, but only needed minor patching and would be able to make it back to the Forward Operating Base on their own. The Roughriders were a different story. nearly all of the horses were killed or needed to be put down, only two would serve again. Four of their riders were killed and three others were evacuated along with the Infantry. The other three limped back with their remaining horses. Two of the tank crew were also evacuated with grievous injuries. The rest of the crew thought they might have to sit and wait for an armoured recovery vehicle to come and tow them back to base, but conveniently the mechanicus were almost as good at fixing stuff in the field as they were at blowing it apart, and in very short order, they had it operating at an acceptable capacity to make it back to base.

Despite the damage done, there weren't many hard feelings for the Mechanicus forces. Mostly all were just glad to know these skitarii were on their side, as they surely would never want to face them again - and were happy to know, that if ever hostiles did show up, these guys would be fighting along side them!

My opponent (Halsten) was the fellow from the local league that I'm going to be teaming up with for the Battle of the Abyss: Team Apocalypse Event. We'd never actually MET, let alone PLAYED any games before - though I've seen him around (at ToonCon, and the Den) and Facebook was always suggesting him as a friend - as we have a number of mutual friends...

Originally when we set this game up I thought we might try out some of the forces we were going to use in the Battle of the Abyss: Team Apocalypse Event coming up in March.... but we've had some changes in or planned forces. Initially he was going to bring some mechanicus stuff, including a few knights. I was going to bring ONE of the Warhound Titans, the Shadowsword, and a small brigade detachment of Tallarn infantry.... but... then I got a second Warhound Titan... and then a Reaver Titan... and I kind of made a joke about bringing all three and how he'd have 30 Power Level left (from our combined 300!) - just enough to field a Valiant or Castellan knight... But he seems keen to try that out!? I'm not sure how well it's going to do. I think the Titans are a bit over-priced power-level-wise.

Our force will look a little like this:

Adeptus Titanicus Super Heavy Detachment
Reaver Titan - 120 Power Level
Warhound Titan - 75 Power Level
Warhound Titan - 75 Power Level

Aseptus Mechanicus Super Heavy Auxiliary Detachment
Knight Valiant - 30 Power Level

Total: 300 Power Level.

Not sure how that's going to work, as theoretically we're supposed to have out own forces that are no bigger than 150 Power Level...  Might need special permission from the organizers. Hopefully they'll go for it... because... TITANS!!! When, other than an Apocalypse event, am I ever going to get to field them all together.

We're not going to have many command point each - we each get three, and the Adeptus Titanicus Super Heavy Detachment will generate one. Not that I need any, really. There is no Codex for the Adeptus Titanicus, so they don't have any fancy stratagems or anything to actually spend command points on - other than the three basic ones in the rulebook...

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

I have the Reaver Titan on the workbench again... The Space Rats, Blackstone Fortress figures, Grey Knights and other odd and sundry items are all still crowded on there, too... but I have a feeling it will be the Reaver I finish up next...

I was thinking I might try to recruit one of the kids to try playing a quick game to try out one of the Warhound Titans... to match it's Power Level the opposing side will get the Shadowsword, A Tank commander (in a Leman Russ tank), three other Leman Russ tanks, and two scout sentinels... That's a LOT of fire power... I'm curious to see how the Titan holds up against such opposition. Perhaps I'll post a report of how that goes down...

Tigris Viridi - Warhound Scout Titan

A second, old Armorcast Warhound Titan arrived in the mail for me a week and a half ago. It's really all I've been working on since. By this past weekend I thought I'd settled on colours and had most of the green and purple painted...

Then I decided the green was too dark after all...

Not nearly enough contrast -and looked positively dull next to Pardus Purpura...

And so I started again with MORE test bits and settled on a lighter colour

And started all over again... mostly...

I have to say I'm much happier with the lighter colour now.

So this is Tigris Viridi. Commanded by Princeps Mozzer. The crew is rounded out by two Moderati; Moderati Joyce (Steersman) and Moderati Marr (Sensors, Communications, Weapons) and two Tech Priests Ro-Urk350 and Pom-Fret681.

Tigris Viridi joins it's partner, Pardus Purpura in the Eritque Arcus Maniple of Legio Amare Feles.

Pardus Purpura is commanded by Princeps Smythe. The crew is rounded out by two Moderati; Moderati Cooper (Steersman) and Moderati Gallup (Sensors, Communications, Weapons) and two Tech Priests 0-Donnel and 6-Abrels.

Some pretty pictures for scale.

Working in tandem with Pardus Purpura and some armour from Tallarn.

Some infantry added in for scale.

Yeah... I'm not sure any sane infantry or tankers would want to operate THIS CLOSE to a Titan - even a smaller, nimbler one like a Warhound. I mean, beyond the possibility of getting trod upon by it, anything that's actually shooting at it is going to be laying down a world of hurt to anything that happens to be in the immediate vicinity!

Tiger Stripe pattern from above.

RAAARRRR!

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

Wish I could say we'd get to see these in action, but I really have NO IDEA when I'll ever get them on the table. I mean, it's 150 Power Level between them. Last year's Chapter Approved increased the point cost to 2000 EACH!?

If not before then, in a little less than two weeks all our regular activities will be wrapped up and we'll have a week and a bit of nothing much to do - and I REALLY hope we get a LOT of gaming in then! Maybe I should get some painting done for some of the games we'd like to play! (Mice & Mystics and Rogue Trader!)

Friday Afternoon Kill Team

Friday afternoon I dropped the kids off at a friends place for the afternoon. I thought rather than ride all the way home and ride ride back to pick them up, I could arrange to get in a few games at the Dragon's Den - which isn't very far from their friends place. I put out a request on the Hunters of the Warp group on Facebook and a Friendly fellow named Mark offered to play a few games with me.

As Mark was planning to bring Adeptus Mechanicus I brought along my Genestealer and Chaos Kill Teams - along with a couple options for Kill Zones.

GAME ONE

The First scenario we played was Take Prisoners in a Sector Mechanicus Kill Zone.

It seemed an appropriate place to start - as he was playing Ad Mech. The Take Prisoners scenario was interesting and kind of made sense. A Tyrnaid bio-pod crashed on a Forge World and genestealers were sent out to bring back samples of the locals for breakdown and study of their biological components. The Adeptus Mechanicus, for their part, having noticed the landing on their aspen would be interested in capturing nay of the visitors for their own study!

The scenario really requires you to isolate individuals in order to capture them, as that is the only thing you get victory points for - captured enemy. So, I set out two groups around the flanks. I think I lost one Genestealer early in the game to boobytraps the Ad Mech had set up amongst their machines and equipment. A second might have been injured by more booby-traps...? I can't remember.

Moving up, taking cover, ready to pounce!

Of the three on the left flank, one was blown away by overwatch fire and the remaining two found themselves a little overwhelmed facing a Sicarian Infiltrator, two Skitarii Vanguard and  Ranger (or two).

The Right flank more easily overcame a few over extended elements of his Kill Team and quickly captured our first prisoner!

Another was killed by them, but they had friendlies nearby and so could not be captured.

A Sicarian Infiltrator was isolated and surrounded... We knocked off all of it's wounds, but it just would not go down - every wound thereafter was just absorbed by armour or turned into another Flesh Wound!?

On the other flank, the second Genestealer was killed leaving one alone and surrounded.

I think by the end of the game - which ended after round five, The Ad mech had captured this Genestealer, but mine had failed to get that Sicarian, so it was even and a draw... So close!

GAME TWO

Our second game I rolled out the Heretic Astartes! This time we played the Terror Tactics scenario in a Sector Munitorum Kill Zone - In the scenario you get two victory points for each model you could get off the enemies table edge and one point for each enemy taken out of action. So better to just try and get as many off - I had a bit of an advantage in numbers with my hoard of cultists!

I tried a Bum's Rush Just throw a bunch of cultists at the Mechanicus Team and send another bunch running for the far edge of the table.

Cultists are pretty weak - so the Ad Mechs did manage to kill a BUNCH of them in the process

I did manage to get a few off - and kill a few enemy in the process.

At the end of Round Four I think it was sitting at 9-7 for victory points (I'd gotten six off and took three enemy out of action, The Ad Mechs had taken out SEVEN of mine - Including one of the Chaos Space Marines!). I had to opt for a strategic withdrawal at that point, however, as I had to go pick up the kids. I feel it could still have gone either way at that point. I could easily have gotten at least two, maybe three, more off, which would have put me in a pretty commanding lead... But he could have just as easily killed the rest of my team...

Fun games. I'll have to try and make it out to games at the Den more often.

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

Later in the evening we got in another round of our Campaign for Xoxigar, but that deserves a separate post... Stay tuned... Hopefully I'll get to that SOMETIME this weekend!!  It's going to be a busy one, though...

Adeptus Mechanicus Sicarians and Tech Priests

Shortly after picking up Kill Team back in July, I picked up a box of Adeptus Mechanicus Sicarians. Though the box says Sicarian Ruststalkers, they can also be built as Sicarian Infiltrators. This is great as they are both options for a Adepts Mechanicus Kill Team and I could buy one box and have a few of each as options to add to the Mechanicus Kill Team that came with the Core Box. Last night I finally finished up the last few Rust Stalkers and Infiltrators (I had finished one of the Infiltrators when I was working on the Skitarri)

New Adeptus Mechanicus Sicarians

Sicarian Infiltrator Princeps

Sicarian Infiltrator

Sicarian Ruststalkers

More recently I picked up the Tech Priest Dominus Mechanicus Commander set when Kill Team: Commanders came out and I've painted him up as a commander. I also happen to have a regular Tech Priest that my friend Paul gave me for my birthday in February - presumably to serve with my Imperial Guard regiments - but as they turned out to be an commander option for the Mechanicus Kill Teams, I finally got around to finishing him off to.

Mechanicus Commander options Tech Priest and Tech Priest Dominus. A Kill Team can only ever have ONE commander, so these two will never be serving together in Kill Team.... at least, not as part of the SAME Kill Team!

Tech Priest Dominus

Tech Priest

My small Adeptus Mechanicus force - with all the options for a Kill Team.

The nice thing about Kill Team is that now that these are done... well... That's it. There's really nothing else I could add to this force - well... okay... there's stuff I COULD add to the force... I COULD get enough of each type to make a force entirely of one type of model -  Skitarri Rangers, Skitarri Vanguard, Sicarian Ruststalkers, and Sicarian Infiltrators... but that would be daft.

The downside of Kill Team is BECAUSE I don't need a lot for each Kill Team, there is that temptation (as in DBA) to do ALL THE FACTIONS!? Ugh.... just... I can't do that... Oh, believe me I've already been tempted to pick up a box of Plague Marines and a box of Pox Walkers... but I'm going to try and NOT do that. I have SO MUCH 40K stuff already... I need to get some of THAT painted first before I go buying any more!

(That being said, if they drop a Kill Team: Inquisition boxed set, I am totally down for one of those!)

(and I am NOT getting Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress when it comes out in a week - I really, REALLY need to get all the Rogue Trader stuff painted FIRST!)

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

I think next I shall endeavour to finish off John's Shadespire Orcs and then get some stuff painted for Mice & Mystics, before returning to 40K stuff...

When I do return to 40K stuff...? Where to start!? I have and a bunch of Imperial Guard I'd like to finish up - just for assorted Astra Militarum Kill Teams (let alone all the other Imperial Guard I have for full-sized 40K armies!) I have stuff for a Space Marine Kill Team, and a handful of Orks that I could paint up to use as an Ork Kill Team. I really want to get the Rogue Trader Crew and Gellerpox Mutants done - along with all the Rogue trader terrain bits. There's still a LOT of Imperialis and Mechanicus terrain to finish up... and a bit more Munitorum terrain... and the knights... and... Yeah... I'm totally not getting all that done this year... but hopefully I'll have some fun trying.

I'm hoping to get in a game of two of Kill Team this weekend to carry on with the Campaign we started last weekend.

Mechanicus Kill Team

Last night I finished up the last of the stuff I was planning to bring to the Kill Team game I am running at ToonCon this weekend.

Adeptus Mechanicus Kill Team

Originally I thought I might paint them the same as the ones I painted for John, but then I kind of liked the look of the way they painted them in the book, so I went with something similar to that. I had also considered doing them as Skitarii Vanguard (since John's left his Rangers here and I could make use of them anytime...), but then I decided to build them all just like the ones in the book - that have premade data cards and stuff...

With the exception of the Sicarian Infiltrator lurking in the back, these all came in the Kill Team Coe Box.

Dorox-0.4343 - Skitarii Vanguard Alpha - the Leader of the Kill Team

Sek-XXVII Skitarii - Vanguard Gunner/Zealot Specialist (With Plasma Caliver), Kappic-Schoelendt-18.1 - Skitarii Ranger/Comms Specialist, and AR-99 Skitarii Vanguard/Scout Specialist.

Mu-575 and Actus-1111 - Skitarii Vanguard

Gryphonne-Reductus-089, Decima-110, Xixos-2918, and Tov-66.75/Mk98 - Skitarii Rangers.

Rhynox-438.28x - Sicarian Infiltrator.

This last one won't be part of the team I'm taking to ToonCon. I bought a box of Sicarians about a week after I picked up Kill Team. The looked like interesting models and I thought they might be fun to add to the team... The box, like the Skitarii box, includes options to build them as Sicarian Infiltrators OR Sicarian Ruststalkers.  The others I assembled as two Ruststalkers, another Infiltrator and and Infiltrator Princeps. The Princeps will be an alternate leader. The Sicarians are a bit pricier, points-wise (14/15 vs 9/10 for the Skitarri). so to include a pair of Sicarians, I'd have to drop three Skitarii. I might include the Ruststalkers as Combat and Zealot Specialists.

overall I'm pretty happy with how they turned out - considering how rushed they were in the end! The only thing I'm not super excited about are the bases. The colour is a little too close to the colour of the jackets. I might lighten those up at some point. I considered rust-ifying them, like the Terminators and Genestealers I did of Space Hulk (and the Genestealers I did more recently)... but then decided not to... I'm kind of okay with that decision.

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

Probably won't be anything else until Sunday or Monday when all the dust has settled from ToonCon and I get a chance to post some pics of the weekend.

After that...? Gosh... I've been SO FOCUSED on getting this Kill Team stuff done for ToonCon, I really haven't given much thought as to what to do AFTER!? I will probably carry on with some more Kill Team/40K stuff... maybe some of the Sector Imperialis terrain that I haven't touched since I assembled and primed it (because I knew I wouldn't be using it at ToonCon!) or some of the Sector Mechanicus stuff I haven't finished off... or the Wall of Martyrs stuff... (Yeah... I went and picked that up last weekend.. I wasn't going to, but then The Dragon's Den went and held their anniversary sale that weekend and I couldn't pass that stuff up at 20% off!?). I still have those Imperial Knights to finish up... LOADS of Tallarn and Valhallans... and Drukhari for Amanda... all the stuff from the Rogue trader box...

I am going to pick up the Commanders set when it comes out in a just over week... and maybe a commander (or two!?) depending on how much those sets end up being. I am curious to see how much they are. All of them include a single miniature - that is currently available on it's own, in most cases. The miniatures purchased on their own vary in price from $25 to about $45!? Most of the miniature made available as Kill Team sets have been cheaper than buying them on their own, so I'm wondering if this trend will continue? Or if it will be the same price as the regular mini - just with a token sheet...? or MORE!?

After that I should probably cool it on the buying...

Well... until the rumoured Kill Team: INQUISITOR box set comes out!? Or Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress!
