Not Dead Yet - Necrons and other Kill Team Stuff

For the last few weeks... (maybe a month...?). I've been getting together with a couple of friends on Discord and having a paint and chat on Sunday afternoons. I haven't been doing much PAINTING, though, mostly assembling. Over the last two weeks I assembled some Necrons from the Kill Team: Shadowvaults box...

Turns out I dislike assembling Necrons ALMOST as much as I dislike playing against them... But they're done! Well... ASSEMBLED, at least.

In the last month, I've also assembled and primed all the miniatures from the Kill Team: Ashes of Faith box set. I was tempted to try and knock off the Sisters of Silence - as they seem easy and maybeFINISHING some stuff might get me motivated to PAINT MORE!!! But I've decided to try and finish ASSEMBLING all the stuff... and THEN worry about figuring out what to paint and when.

Although... I'm tempted to paint Necrons as well, now... I could go with very simple paint jobs on them - just to finish some stuff.

Will I ever PLAY with the Necrons...? I don't know... Maybe just to try them out. A more likely (relatively speaking) is that I might use them as opponents in a game of Wrath & Glory.

We shall see...

Kill Team: Ashes of Faith

GADDAMNIT!?

I SWEAR this is the last one... I.... I... just couldn't pass on this one. I've been waiting for an Inquisition box since they released the Rogue Trader box for the PREVIOUS edition of Kill Team!?

Honestly, I'm not WOWed by the new inquisition miniatures, per se... I have ones in metal I'd be happy to use. If that were the ONLY thing of interest in the box, I could have let it go... All together it is an iNsAnE deal like, less than half the cost of buying all these things separately... Do I need ALL THESE THINGS...? Well, I can make use of them for sure.  I mean, I have inquisition stuff for 40K... I have Guard... I have Chaos Space Marines - and all Cultists are the new(-ish) cultist minis they released with the latest Chaos Space Marine codex (last year?)... which... I never bought (I wasn't playing THAT much 40K and wasn't working on the CSM and I'm still holding out that there's going to be an Emperor's Children Codex at SOME point!?)

What really drove me to get this was the campaign - it includes a new campaign system that pits an inquisition force against a Chaos cult... and you know I LOVE campaigns!? Well, I love the IDEA of campaigns!?

Speaking of campaigns...

I also discovered that there are a few Age of Sigmar models that are STILL produced in METAL!? So I picked up a few Skaven that I don't have any of... yknow... for the upcoming (SOMEDAY!?) Warcry Under-Carngard Challenge...

Now to get assembling and painting some of this stuff!?

Kill Team - Drukhari Ambush

I do like that Ambush scenario...

Ages ago, back in August, I painted up a few Kabalites to make Amanda's old Crimson Wave Wych Cult Kill Team ready to play - in anticipation of her getting in on the game. She played a few games of the old Kill Team with them. She'd played Shadow War Armageddon before that. She played LOADS of Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress. She even played a bit of Necromunda... but until this week, I wasn't able to get her to play a game of the NEW Kill Team.

This week, however, she relented and joined me and Finnegan for a game!

This scenario followed on from our previous game earlier in the week, in which Kill Team Coranos seized an important Ancient Aeldari Artefact from the Ebony Vipers Genestealer Cult (Which a Biel-Tymm Combat Patrol had failed to do!).

Lurking, undetected in the deep shadows of the jungles of Xoxigar Tertium, a team of Drukhari took all of this in... and decided they couldn't just let the Deathwatch Kill Team make of their their own ancestors relics....

We did not bother with Tac Ops as this was a learning game for Amanda and we just wanted to focus on the mechanics of the game on the table. (We'll add in Tac Ops next time...)

All set up according to the scenario... Death watch on one half of the table and needing to get off the opposite.

Half the Drukhari waiting in ambush on one flank.

The rest quietly wainting on the other flank.

Turning Point One

Kill Team Coranos was trudging though the deep jungles of Xoxigar Tertium towards their extraction point, when Brother Benatos Diodexious, glancing at his auspex said; "Hey guys, I'm picking up some funny readings..."

Thrixxesh Xoshut, the Kabalite Heavy Gunner, started things off, filling the jungle with a blinding purple beam of light...

She blasted a hole clear through Brother Diodexious' chest with her Dark Lance - evaporating one of his hearts... Luckily, the Emperor, in all his benevolence, graced the battle brother with two! It still dropped the marine and he would take no part in this action at all...

Reacting quickly to the ambush, Brother Borealis Issolis unleashed a torrent of bolter rounds in the general direction of where the lance shot had come from, shattering the Dukhari's weapon and dropping the gunner.

He then rushed forwards and, spotting another waiting in ambush, flushed the underbush with another volley of explosive rounds (Finnegan had used the Bolter Discipline Strategic Ploy - allowing all bolter armed troopers to be able to shoot twice).Peiythia was taken out of action before she could even lash out at the Marine with her Shardnet and Impaler...

Maleyk took cover and shredded many jungle plants with their splinter rifle... but little else.

Brother Nasirdan Cannistus, like Issolis, shot at ambushers on one flank, moved and shot at more ambusher on the other flank injuring Draeven...

...and seriously injuring Shixane.

Draeven shot at Brother Icasos Scamedes, injuring him.

She then repositioned to get a better field of fire as the Marines moved through the Kill Zone.

Sergeant Laescos Coranos charged Rushed forward, determined to lead his marines out of this ambush by cutting a swath straight through them...

Saphusykh Vhrex cut down Brother Icasos Scamedes with her Splinter Rifle.

Brother Cannistus did some Overwatch fire at Shixane, but missed.

Hekatrix Vulvatrix, leader of the Crimson Wave Wych Cult, charged directly into close combat with the burly leader of the Deathwatch Kill Team. She dealt him some grievous injuries, to be sure... but he took her out of action...

Brother Issolis let rip with some punishing overwatch fire, shredding trees and bushes and finishing off Shixane.

Khatryx Charged the injured sergeant and finished him off...

Vaivel Wisp and Asphyxa Noiyr both advanced and shot at Canistus with their Splinter Pistols, finishing him off as well...

Turning Point Two

Brother Borealis Issolis and Khatryx faced each other down... who would get the initiative...

Finnegan rolled a one... so...

in she went, Razorflails flashing to and fro...

Ceaseless...

Brutal....

Amanda rolled a crit and four regular successes

Finnegan... not so much...

The Wych dealt the gunner 16 damage - taking him out, removing both arms...

(They're marines, they grow back... or something...)

Post game recovery checks were made and everyone was just fine... relatively speaking. I'm sure they spent a lot of time in the surgical wards back on the Inquisitor's Battle Barge, regrowing lost limbs and having new second hearts reimplanted and such... but they would fight again.

Amanda's fallen Drukhari likewise recovered and were able to fight another day...

Amanda admitted she quite liked this new version of Kill Team - especially liking the streamlined combat resolution. She had found the Roll-to-Hit, Roll-to-Wound, Roll-to-Save process somewhat tedious.

Drukhari are NASTY.

Perhaps we'll get Amanda playing a bit more in the new year.

Inquisitors, Deathwatch, Kellermorph and a Daemonette

An assortment of items rolling off the workbench, some just in time for our next game of New40K and the finale to the Rise Up! Campaign.

Lord Inquisitor Drusilla Kyros and her Deathwatch Kill Team. They have arrived in the Xoxigar system to deal with the Genestealer Cult menace.

Lady Drusilla herself.

The Deathwatch Kill Team.

There are six more to do. I'd hoped to get them all done for today... but it just didn't happen... Hopefully some time in August - and then they can have another run at The Signal

Ordo Malleus Inquisitors Deeana and Samantha Chesterwind.

Deeana is a Hasslefree Miniatures figure (with a plasma pistol from GW) and Samantha is a Reaper Bones miniature - I'd painted her before, but recently rebased and mostly repainted her recently.

More on the Chesterwinds in a separate post soon!

Genestealer Cult Kelermorph.

Deamonette of Slaanesh. I'd actually painted this around the same time as the Hellflayer, but forgot to include her in the post.... so here she is now.

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

As mentioned earlier, we have the finale to the Rise Up Campaign going on this afternoon - stay tuned for a game report.

Genestealer Cultist, Kroot Shaper, Inquisition Stormtroopers

An assortment of items rolling off the workbench this week...

(In addition to the Nugley-Death-Guard I posted yesterday!)

A Genestealer Cult Sanctus - a cult assassin that comes with Bio-Blade or Sniper Rifle options (I went with Sniper Rifle... but kind of wish I went with the blade...). The sanctus is one of the many new non-HQ-Elite Characters the Genestealer cult Can field. Finished this one up for use in our two Narrative Campaigns we got going on.

Kroot Shaper.

I got him for Finnegan to kind of use as a leader for his Kroot. Technically he still needs a T'au to least them (like his T'au Commander! or an Etherial...) because the Sheer is a non-HQ character model. He just buffs nearby Kroot.

Inquisition Stormtrooper Kill Team.

I had a few spare Stormtroopers that didn't fit into a full squad of five, so I thought I could field them as "acolytes" in an Inquisition Detachment. These would be part of Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor Lady Marlaena du Shard's retinue. All in black, ready to strike out of the darkness and whisk their quarry away to the Black Ships in the middle of the night...

The new inquisition rules in Psychic Awakening: Pariah look pretty cool... although they aren't THAT much different from what they put in the White Dwarf last year... which wasn't THAT much different than what was in the Index when 8th edition came out... I mean, ALL of the Inquisitors followers are flavourless "Acolytes". Gone are the days of the varied Henchmen - The Sage, The Warrior, the Familiar, The Penitent, the Chirugeon, and the Acolyte... each with their own abilities and flavour...

I suppose I could just take a bunch of single Acolyte figures and give each of them bonus abilities (like those from Chapter Approved 2018 - like we're doing in our current narrative campaigns...).

Should be a game report later this evening or tomorrow - Game Three of the Rise Up! Campaign.

On the Workbench

It's Work-In-Progress Wednesday! Here is what is haunting my workbench these days...

There is a lot of the same stuff I've been plucking away at (brushing away at...?) for the last few weeks - with a few new additions that have snuck their way on... distracting me from my plan to finish up the Blackstone Fortress minis!

With the release of Psychic Awakening: Pariah and the updated Inquisition rules, I've gotten thinking about Inquisition Forces again - so I rebased a few minis, including these old Guard Stormtroopers, for ONE of the planned Inquisition forces! They will be Stormtrooper acolytes in the retinue of the Chesterwind sisters - Sam(anther) and Dee(ana) - Ordo Malleus DAEMON HUNTERS!

(You can see Dee Chesterwind, with her bolder and chainsword, just off to the left of the picture)

I'm a little confused by the rules, though, It seems you can only ever have ONE inquisitor in any detachment - so I'll have to build up TWO detachments - one around each of the sisters...? I guess I'll have to build a third around their mom, Jane Chesterwind, who became a Daemon Hunter after their father was killed by a Daemon!

Antother Inquisitorial force I have in the works. Finnegan picked up the new Ordo Xenos Lord Inquisitor Kyria Draxus model - because he thought she looked cool and would go along with his Deathwatch (as they are the Chamber Militant for the Ordo Xenos)... so I've assembled primed her and finished assembling and priming all his Deathwatch... They may have to step in to pick up finish the mission in The Signal Campaign, if the Imperial Fists fail... and I DEFINITELY have a plan for them to show up in the Rise Up! Campaign!

The Priority right now - a couple of Genestealer Cultist characters - who will also be showing up in BOTH of the narrative campaigns I am currently running!

I also picked up these two; the Daemonifuge – Ephrael Stern & Kyganil - though it seems, once again, I have missed out on grabbing a copy of the Daemonifuge Graphic Novel as Games Workshop didn't amen nearly enough and it sold out on pre-order... and they couldn't possibly REPRINT a book... maybe in another DECADE... y'know for the 30TH anniversary printing...

Goddamnit, GW, you just make it SO EASY for the haters out there with bull$h!t like this...

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

Reports of Game Two of both the Rise Up! and The Signal campaigns.

Finnegan and I played Game Two of The Signal yesterday, and I'll be posting the report... oh... a couple minutes after this one...

Da Boyz will be back tomorrow to play Game Two of the Rise Up! campaign.

Grey Knights

Last week I finished up an Ordo Malleus Inquisitor in Terminator Armour and that got me thinking about the Grey Knights again - as Daemon-Hunting adepts of the Ordo Malleus - and I ended up reorganizing and rebasing the force. Or, at least, the ones I had painted so far... And I finished off one Grey Knight that was partly painted - to complete a newly reorganized squad. With the rebasing I added two Commanders (a Brother Captain and a Brotherhood Champion) and a regular Grey Knight Strike Squad and a Grey Knight Purgation Squad to the Inquisitor's Force of Daemon Hunters.

Newly finished Grey Knight (Brother Roger) AND a Death Watch Marine of Finnegan's I painted this week. I had originally tried painting the Death Watch with Contrast® paints... but it looked like garbage, so I repainted the whole thing and it looks much better now...

Here is the force so far...

Daemon Hunters! A couple of Ordo Malleus Inquisitors and a small force of Grey Knights

As Iv'e been thinking about Kill Team a lot lately, so I was mostly considering how I'd organize them for Kill Team. Thus the points and specialisms and skills mentioned below are for when they are being fielded in Kill Team.

The pair I've earmarked as Ordo Malleus Inquisitors.

I Haven't actually named either yet...

Nor have I statted them out for Kill Team - as there AREN'T really rules for Inquisitors in Kill Team... YET! But, the one in Terminator Armour I figure I could use her "as Brother Captain" Grey Knight. The other...? Maybe as a "As Brotherhood Champion"...? But give him a combo-weapon (that Brotherhood champions aren't normally supposed to have)

Brother Captain Alan
Brother Captain with Nemesis Force Sword, Storm Bolter, Krak, Psyk-Out, and Frag Grenades
Commander Specialism: Strength
Level One - Skill: Muscular - 100 Points
Level Two - Skill: Brutal Strike - 120 Points
Level Three - Skill: Devastating Power - 140 Points
Level Four - Skill: Crusher - 165 Points

Not being sure what level I'd field the Brother Captain at, I've figured out what I'd field him at for each level, and have done the same for the Brotherhood Champion below.

Brother Champion Tyson
Brother Captain with Nemesis Force Sword, Storm Bolter, Krak, Psyk-Out, and Frag Grenades
Commander Specialism: Melee
Level One - Skill: Expert Fighter - 108 Points
Level Two - Skill: Warrior Born - 128 Points
Level Three - Skill: Precision Strike - 148 Points
Level Four - Skill: Lightning Reflexes - 173 Points

Alpha Wolf Squad (from left to right: Brother Roger, Brother Steve, Justicar Jeff, Brother Blake, and Brother Curtis)

Justicar Jeff
Grey Knight Justicar - Nemesis Force Sword, Storm Bolter, Krak Grenades, Psyk-Out Grenades
Specialism: Leader
Skill: Resourceful (+1 Command Point per turn)
19 Points

Brother Steve
Grey Knight Gunner - Incinerator, Krak Grenades, Psyk-Out Grenades
Specialism: Demolitions
Skill: Breacher (+1 wound rolls against targets that are obscured)
22 Points

Brother Blake
Grey Knight - Nemesis Force Halberd, Storm Bolter, Krak Grenades, Psyk-Out Grenades
Specialism: Zealot
Skill: Frenzied (+1A and +1S in a battle round in which they charged)
18 Points

Specialism: Combat
Skill: Expert Fighter (+1A)
18 Points

Brother Roger
Grey Knight - Nemesis Force Halberd, Storm Bolter, Krak Grenades, Psyk-Out Grenades
18 Points

Alpha Wolf Squad is a full-sized Kill Team on it's own - at 95 points. The rest of the squads are, more or less, just extras that could be added into the roster.

Delta Badhand Squad - (from left to right: Brother James, Brother Kyle, Justicar Brian, Brother Scott, and Brother Robin)

Justicar Brian
Grey Knight Justicar - Nemesis Force Halberd, Storm Bolter, Krak Grenades, Psyk-Out Grenades

22 points

Brother
Grey Knight Gunner - Incinerator, Krak Grenades, Psyk-Out Grenades
22 points

Being Fielded in 40K or Apocalypse... currently... this would only be a Patrol Detachment... But I'd only be able to take TWO of the HQ Elements

HQ Elements
Inquisitor 4PL
Inquisitor in Terminator Armour 6PL
Brother Captain 6PL
Brotherhood Champion 5Pl

Troops
Strike Squad (5) 8 PL

Heavy Support
Purgation Squad (5) 7PL

STILL TO DO!

I have two other squads to finish up: Beta Carotene Squad and Charley Horse Squad - both are just Regular Grey Knight Squads. They'll only ever be used in regular 40K or Apocalypse - when this force is fielded as an allied Battalion Detachment for any Imperial Force. I also have two Rhinos that could ferry the four five-man squads around... I'd need something else for the command elements (Captain and Champion).

When these are all finished up, I should be able to field the force as an allied Battalion Detachment for any of my Imperial forces in either regular 40K or 40K: Apocalypse

I also have three Grey Knight Terminators to paint up. They'll probably only ever be used in Kill Team, because to use them otherwise I'd have to track down two more of them. I just can't be bothered at this point... I guess I should never say never....

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

I have some Necromundan Imperial Guard I'm currently organizing for Kill Team, as well as some Imperial Fist Space Marines. Writing a bit more background for each of those... so... it's taking longer... I guess tomorrow I'll be posting Part One of May's Games (and Other Stuff)
