Ninja All-Stars - Spirit Shrine Shinobi and Samurai Sentry

I'm not entirely sure how Keiran ended up with Ninja All-Stars...? I think it might have been that I found it deeply discounted.... somewhere... and I knew they were really excited about Super Dungeon Explore... So we picked it up for them a few years back...

I'm not sure if they even played it (they may have played it with Finnegan at one point..?).

As I mentioned in the previous post, I think I wasbeen looking around on Meeplemart to see if they had anything else I could add to an order, as it is unlikely that I'll be ordering anything else any time soon... and I THINK I went looking at Soda Pop miniatures to see if they had any heroes for Super Dungeon Explore and they didn't but they had the two Ninja All Stars miniatures above and I remembered that Keiran the game and I must have got it in my head that I should order these two miniatures and paint them and I could paint up a couple of teams of the ones that Keiran had and maybe that might motivate them to play the game....? Maybe...?

Anyway, while I was waiting for the order to arrive, I decided I could try painting a few of the miniatures that Keiran already had... just to see how quick they might paint up and see if it motivated Keiran to get back to painting - or at least interested in playing if *I* painted all the miniatures!?

In the main box there are four teams Blue (Water), Red (Fire), Orange (Spirit), and Purple (Void). I am a fan of orange, so I grabbed a couple of those Shinobi and a Samurai Sentry and started painting.

Spirit Shrine Madoushi, Kaiken, and Samurai Sentry.

As much as a paint in the ass that orange is to paint over large surfaces and get an even coat... (Seriously, there were three different shades of orange I used, and needed to do TWO COATS OF EACH!?) I think they turned out okay and would kind of like to finish up the rest of the team!

Spirit Shrine Madoushi

Spirit Shrine Kaiken

Samurai Sentry

If Keiran were to show any interest in playing I'd probably do the Void Shrine next and finish up the Samurai Sentries.

I also have a few little shrine-like terrain bits that came with the last Reaper Bones I could paint up to substitute in for the shrine tokens in the game... maybe...

Lion Clan for Dragon Rampant

Somehow I got thinking about my collection of East Asian Fantasy collection (I think it was probably from seeing the "Daimyo" expansion in the current Reaper Bones Kickstarter...?). I had previously planned to do Hordes of the Things armies for each of the Clans in AEGs Legends of the Five Rings, plus keep a bunch on individual bases for role-playing games, and later I expanded those a bit to be used as Buntai in Osprey Wargame's Ronin - Samurai skirmish game.

The largest and most complete of the HOTT armies was the Lion Clan army. I completed a Hordes of the Things army for them in 2011-2012(?) along with an opposing Phoenix Clan army. I used them in the Summer 2012 HOTT Campaign... and... never used them again. They've never even faced the other L5R HOTT Army I built - the Phoenix Clan.

I also have a number of minis that were dedicated to a Lion Clan Ronin Buntai.

Recently I have been reconsidering my basing standards and whether I'm likely to use some of the units/armies I have on multi-figure bases. I've decided that I'm going to rebase all the L5R HOTT armies (well the two that I've done - and a few other elements I made for other armies) onto individual bases, as it is very unlikely that I will EVER finish HOTT armies for any of the other clans... I probably COULD, however put together large enough forces to use them with Dragon Rampant - and, being on single bases, they could still be used for Ronin or any role-playing game I happen to want to use them in.

So here is a Warband of Lion Clan troops for Dragon Rampant.

the entire force - 24 points worth

The force is mostly made up of figures from AEGs old L5R Minatures Game (Clan War..?), Old Glory and a few from Perry Miniatures... and possibly Dixon...?

The Leader is a Shugenja  - a wizard of sorts - (probably of the Kitso family). I like that in Dragon Rampant wizards are sort of... abstract... There are some rules for making actual wizards that cast spells (that all seem pretty... weak...) or you can just field it as a Single Model, Light Missile unit (which is what I'm doing here) and the shooting it does represents magic blastification of some sort... - 4 points

Foot Samurai - Elite Foot - 6 Points

I think the one in the centre is supposed to be Matsu Tsuko - the Daimyo of the Lion Clan at the time Clan War was going on... Perhaps SHE should be the leader!?

Foot Samurai - Elite Foot - 6 Points

Ashigaru with Spear - Light Foot? I have some Ahisgaru with heavier armour - they might qualify as - 3 points

Ashigaru with Bow - Light Missile - 4 points

Hmmmm... actually, that's only 23... I guess I could call the Ashigaru Heavy Foot...?

Battered Unit Marker.

I have a few more as well...

Some are painted (but there are not enough of to fill out a unit - or they're just fun extras that will NEVER be in a unit for Dragon Rampant)

There are a bunch that are unpainted (that will fill out said aforementioned units),

and a few that are still on multi-figure bases that need rebasing.

Eventually I will have options for Missile-armed Elite foot (armoured samurai with bow), possibly some Heavy Cavalry (mounted samurai), a few more archers (more ashigaru, or lighter armoured samurai?), MORE units of Elite Foot, Lesser War Beasts (the Lions!!). Once they're all painted the elite foot will be reorganized - I have enough of the Matsu Lion's Pride (elite, all-female Samurai unit) to form one unit of six. I'm currently using one - the one with two swords in the second unit of Elite Foot. At SOME point, when my interests gen-u-inely return to the far east and Samurai and I actually get to painting up all the minis I have, I could potentially order a few more from Perry miniatures - just to fill out a couple last units (more archers, and a reduced sized unit of Heavy Missile - ashigaru armed with Tepo - muskets - not really part of the L5R world... but these are MY fantasy figures, I can add in whatever I want!!!)

I may or may not get to re-basing the Phoenix clan minis... It will require some creative unit construction to get anything useable at this time... and will have a LOT of mages in reduced model units... but I might try as I can now rebase things quite quickly and easily (having so much experience at doing so!) and then I would have an opponent for these and be able to play a game of Dragon Rampant - which I've been wanting to do for some time (I mean "Dan Mercy Games" was on my original 10x Personal Challenge list!)

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming blog:

A few Necromunda Items and another rebasing project!

And then... some other stuff...

10th Annual Wargaming Birthday Bash – Part Two

After the Ronin Campaign on Saturday, the gaming raged on into Sunday!

Starting at 10am we kicked the days gaming off with a game of Ikusa… Cory (from Calgary) Paul (of Sabre’s Edge in Winnipeg) and Curtis (a local pal) joined in.

It took us a while to get going as none of us had ever played... or perhaps Cory had played the original version a couple decades ago...? Anyway, took some figuring out, but it was a totally fun game and I would definitely play it again. Funner than Axis & Allies!

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

Cory shows us how it’s done in Turn One by laying the smack down on EVERYONE!

A little more careful planning was required from Turn Two onwards…

Things looking bad for my Purple armies.

Paul took me down by assassinating my last daimyo with a Ninja and then cleaning up his army during the ensuing chaos. Fortunately for Paul I had a crapload of dudes that all quickly swore fealty to his Daimyos and kind of made the rest of the game a foregone conclusion…

Paul's Big Green Machine!

Feudal Japan was kind of the Big Theme of the weekend so I bought Samurai Swords for the winners of the Ronin Campaign and Ikusa.

We then cracked the copy of Smash Up Cory had brought me for my birthday – we all had a hearty laugh when I opened the rather large box to find only fourlittle decks within! (I guess they were planning for expansions...?)

The game was a whole lot of fun. I think I ended up winning with my Zombie Leprechauns. It was a tight race as everyone else was within a point or two of winning.

Paul played Alien Wizards, Cory had Robot Dinosaurs, and Curtis ended up with Ninja Pirates!

After a quick supper out at Amigos we were back for more gaming. Starting with a game of Munchkin Conan

After that we finished that we had a go at the Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game that Paul had brought along!

It seemed like a pretty slick system. Finnegan and I started off playing Pick Patrol – Finnegan was Pink Leader and I played Pink One and Pink Two – two rookie piolots that were out on a training mission when we happened to run into a flight of TIE-fighters piloted by Amanda and Keria

Amanda trying to crash her TIE-fighters into each other.

Quite the mess – I’m surprised no one actually DID collide and blow up!

I think this was shortly before Pink Leader went BOOM! I managed to take out one of the TIE-fighters with one of my Rookie Pilots before we had to call it a night… it was getting waaaaaaaay too late and we were pretty much all gamed out.!

Thanks again to Paul and Cory who came so far to make this weekend awesome!

The Dragon Clan Bushi Buntai!

More Monks, French Napoleonic Line Artillery, The Watchmen, and Assorted Ramblings About Nothing in Particular…

And so that was January. Poof! Gone.

It hasn’t been a terribly productive month – painting-wise. Even though the family was away for a week and a half! Usually I crank through about 100 28mm foot in a month – especially during the winter when I don’t get out as much as I perhaps should… but the unending renovations…

Three weeks from this weekend is the 10th Annual Wargaming Birthday Bash/Winter Wargaming Weekend! After this lot I have 2-4 more Bushi Buntai to finish up. I should start getting people to confirm whether they are for-sure-for-sure coming (and maybe not bother paint those last two…).

Here is the latest…

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version):

These are for my second Sohei Buntai. All the miniatures are from The Assault Group. This is a bit more than 400 points worth of stuff as I am still tweaking this force, so I’ll be doing another post in a day or two with the force that will be used in the campaign.

The Grand Master and his two Senior Sohei.

Four Sohei with naginata

Four Sohei with yumi (bow) though one has hair, which is annoying because I'm pretty sure all monk shaved their heads... When it first arrived I thought I might add a bit more of a cowl with green stuff to cover the offending hair... but I didn't... call it laziness.... or call it panic - because I still have three more buntai to finish in the next three weeks!

Some figures that I thought I might use as initiates. Again, some of them have hair.... maybe they're SO new to the order they haven't had a chance to shave their heads...?

This next bit might be a bit of a shock to those that have followed the blog a while or have known me personally...

Yeah, those are French Napoleonic Line Artillery from Perry Miniatures

I've been playing Neil Thomas' Wargaming Nineteenth Century Europe and really enjoy it. I noticed he had a set of rules for the Napoleonic Wars, and figuring it would be about the same I picked up a copy. It being quite similar to the other rules I thought it might be fun to play and not a lot of stuff is required. I have half a British force already, so I thought I'd pick up enough stuff for a French force to oppose it.... and I happen to be ordering stuff from Perry Miniatures for the Ronin campaign... so I ordered this gun and crew....

I really know next to nothing about the Napoleonic era - and even less about the French. I find the myriad of different uniforms and combinations of equipment a bit dizzying at times... but after studying the sample on the Perry website, a few napoleonic Line Artillery plates I was able to find on the web, and Curt's fabulous example - in the Analogue Hobbies Napoleonic Gallery! I sloshed some paint on these fellows and hoped for the best...

Hopefully the results and my cavalier and purely amateurish attitude won't offend any of the hardcore Grognards out there...

Finally I finished painting up a batch of minis for my friend John

These are old 25mm figures from Grenadier Models made for the DC Heroes Role-Playing Game by Mayfair Games.

Silk Spectre II (Laurie Juspeczyk) and Doctor Manhattan (Dr. Jonathan "Jon" Osterman)

Nite Owl II (Daniel Dreiberg) and Rorschach (Walter Joseph Kovacs)

Ozymandias (Adrian Veidt) and The Comedian (Edward Morgan Blake)

Hooded Justice and Captain Metropolis (Nelson "Nelly" Gardner)

Also included in the boxed set were Moloch The Mystic and a considerably smaller scale Owl Ship - which, not being "heroes" I didn't feel compelled to get done in time for the bonus round as I have more pressing things to paint!

These have been submitted as part of the “Heroes” Fortnightly Themed Bonus Round of the Fourth Annual Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge. There are bonus points for the most popular – so if you think these are fab you can go and vote for them here:

The Fourth Fortnight Thematic Bonus Round: 'Hero or Heroic Group'

Because the last poll got spammed or something voting has to be done through posting comments…

In other news…

North Star Figures had a sale…

…and I went a little overboard… There’s some Napoleonic French Infantry to join the artillery above. I’ll need a few more units of infantry and some cavalry to finish up the force, but none of that’s really a priority at the moment. There’s also some British and French Napoleonic Colonels there (on horseback). I also picked up 16 Sikh Riflemen for Great War in East Africa (and potentially other colonial conflicts – real or imaginary!). Finally I grabbed a few packs of the Atomic Café 1957 figures; some zombies, the Soviets, the Michigan State Bowling Team(!?), and some Civil Defense types in NBCD gear.

I’ve been listening to A Game of Thrones audiobook for the last week or so while staying up much too late painting after the kids have gone to bed. It’s got me thinking about Hordes of the Things campaigning again… I’m not sure what form this will take? Perhaps I could run another summer campaign weekend? Or another online/email campaign? Or even an ongoing campaign with the locals - get together once a week and play out a season or two once a week. Anyone interested in getting in on any of that action?

I’m also planning on making some new terrain for the upcoming Ronin Campaign/Tournament. I thought I’d make a half dozen dedicated terrain boards approximately 3’x3’ (they’ll actually be 90cm x 90cm) I’ve been thinking I should make them so that they could match up with other terrain tiles I’ve made (or could make in the future) – so any roads or rivers would exit at the middle of where a 30x30cm tile would line up with it.

The big question that’s been troubling me is whether I should stick with the size of the old terrain tiles or start afresh and ditch the old ones?

I have the equivalent of about 24 tiles at present. So matching with them ould greatly add to the possibilities of what I could lay out. Unfortunately when I made the very first of them I didn’t give nearly enough thought to what I was doing and made them with some scraps I had on hand. I had a bit of 3/8 plywood and a bunch of 1” Styrofoam. So I used the 3/8 plywood as a base and cut 1” batts for the sides out of 3/4” plywood or MDF and filled the area with the 1” Styrofoam. So I have tiles that are 1 3/8 thick and when I made the second and third batches I followed suit – even though I’d had a better Idea of how to make them.

Ideally I’d like to make new ones with ¼” MDF bases and use ½” Styrofoam to fill them – that way the rivers needn’t be so deep, nor the banks so steep – which have caused troubles in many games. Also slimmer ones would be easier to store…

But to build anew would mean all these old ones will be… well… less useful…

Hmmmm….

Yeah…

I’m kind of leaning towards starting afresh…

Anyone want some old beat up terrain tiles?

[sorry already taken!]
