Warhammer Underworlds - Skirmish Fridays at the Warhammer Store

Back in February a fellow named Jared had contacted me through this very blog stating he lived here in Saskatoon and asked if I'd be interested in playing a game. I suggested we try playing at the new Warhammer store (as Fridays in February just happened to be Warhammer Underworlds Game Nights). So we got together and played a few games there

Since then the warhammer store has changed from focusing on different Skirmish games each month (rotating betweein Kill Team, Warhcry and Warhammer Underworlds) and now just has a generic "Skirmish Game Fridays".

I've been thinking a lot about trying to get out and play more games - and, in particular, more TWO-player games of Warhammer Underworlds! Orion and I have also been talking about trying to get a community of Warhammer Underworlds players... so I've been meaning to get out and start playing games on Fridays at the Warhammer store for some time... but Fridays just ended up being busy.

About a month ago now ANOTHER local person had found my blog and, finding the Linktree on my blogger profile, sent me a note though Board Game Geek, inquiring if I'd be interested in playing a game! I suggested the Warhammer Store... but then the next three or for Fridays ended up being busy for me and it wasn't until this past Friday we both had the evening free and agreed to meet up!

I got to the store super early, like over an hour early - as the "Skirmish Game Night" starts at 4pm and Dan couldn't get there until 5:30, and I thought I'd be able to possibly get in a quick game with... someone else...? If anyone showed....?

In the end John, the store manager, and I decided to try and get in a quick game...

John is a very friendly fellow and seems super keen to play Warhammer Underworlds, but hasn't gotten a lot of games in yet! He decided to play with his Sons of Velmorn and I brought out Skabbik's Plaguepack.

Set up and ready to go!

Skritter started things off making a run for an Objective Token deep in enemy territory. hoping he would waste an activation killing it - and getting no glory for it - or better yet, ignore it and leave it there as Skritter is a behouler and, even though it is a beast and can't HOLD objectives, to corrupt a territory a befouler only need to be ON an objective!

A bit of a skirmish developed near No One's Territory with Velmorn himself. Rabidious took a swing at him, dealing three damage!

I love the colour on John's bases that kind of match the colours on the Shadespire/Nightvault boards!

At the end of the first round it happened that THREE of undead warriors were all in No One's Territory, and the King was vulnerable (only one wound remaining)... As I had Befoulers on THREE objectives in three territories I corrupted EVERYTHING and everyone in my warband inspired and beginning round two, staggered all those undead next to my befouler and then Itchitt, for the only time in the seven games I've played with these, read from the BOOK OF WOE....

Reading from the Book of Woe is a special action Itchitt has. When Itchitt does so I roll a magic die for each enemy in the same territory as me and if I roll Focus (when unispired - 33% chance of success) or Channel (when inspired - 50% chance of success) one wound is dealt. As Itichitt was now inspired and I had a 50% chance of dealing a wound... I went for it - desperately hoping to succeed on Velmorn, and I DID!! Boom... Velmorn gone! I don't even remember if I hit either of the others!?

I don't really remember the rest of the game..

One thing i DO remember was on TWO occasions my skaven were hit with two successes and I rolled a crit defence on my single defence die (the ONLY roll that could have saved me)! Both occasions were against opponents that would have taken my fighters out with one successful hit! That, along with taking out Velmorn with the Reading from the Book of Woe really won the game for me.

I'm pretty sure I won with 13 Glory. I remember that because I think I had three games in a row where I scored 13 Glroy with these rats... and there are three objective cards that I very defiinitely never, ever score and need to trash and make a nemesis deck for these stinkers!

In the end I didn't get to play with Dan...

Orion showed up just after John and I started. The game took a little longer than I expected and Dan showed up while we were only halfway through! Orion offered to run Dan through a game though and the two of them set up on one of the other tables. I finished my game with John, but by the time Orion and Dan were done, there wasn't enough time to play another game before the store closed...

whoopsie...

It probably worked out for the best as Orion is SUCH A GOOD PLAYER and is amazing at keeping track of all things going on... I can barely remember what I'M supposed to be doing half the time!

Dan seemed like a friendly guy and we planned to get together soon to get in a game!

Though I theoretically have a Boardgame Night every other friday at my place, I think I'm going to try and make it out to Skirmish Friday Nights on the regular - at least through the summer and fall - We rarely get started before 8pm when playing boardgames with Kevin and Shannon and the Warhammer Store closes at 7pm, so I should be able to make it home in time to play boardgames afterwards!

Warhammer Underworlds: Battles in Shadespire and the Beastgrave

Once again Orion and Nick joined us for a couple of games of Warhammer Underworlds on the first Sunday in April.

We started off with a game set in Shadespire (only using boards from Shadespire/Nightvault)

I wanted to try out the freshly painted Sons of Velmorn with their own Rivals Deck and selected Katophrane's Reliquary board. Amanda wanted to keep playing Elathain's Soulraid, still just using their own Rivals Deck and took The Cursed Oubliette board). Nic was playing Grashrack's Despoilers with a Nemesis deck using Break Neck Slaughter on The Ruptured Seal. Orion was playing the Sepulchral Guard with a Nemesis deck using Rimlocked Relics on The Cursed Oubliette.

Starting things off, Nic charged in with Draknar, smashing Helmar the Hewer to bits...

Draknar did not get to celebrate that victory long as Sir Jedran stepped up and cleaved the beast in twain!

Um... and then everyone ran away from me and over to the Sepulchral Guards side of the battlefield!?

Deepking and Beastmen and skeletons all mixing it up!

More beastmans and skeletons...

Um....? I only have three move over here!? Wait for me!!!

Grashrak Fellhoof charged the Sepulchral Warden... it did not go well for Mr. Fellhoof...

I did have a card that brought Helmar the Hewer back... in my own territory...

As the Sons of Velmorn moved up, it drew the attention of Elathain's Soulraid and Tammael charged Sir Jedran.

Marchal Faulk moved up and despatched Tammael...

Elathain moved up and with a pair of nasty blows, took down Sir Jedran and with the stolen soul, revived his harpoon chucking thrall, Tammael!

So, I killed Tammael, to release Sir Jedran's soul...

Amanda had given Elathain, like five or six upgrades... reducing damage, reducing attack dice of foes... there was no way I was going to take them down... so I focused on scoring a few hold objectives...

And tried to chase down Fuirann!? I hit and dealt 3 damage - which SHOULD have taken her out... but Amanda had given her an upgrade blessing her with +1 wounds... So one of Orions rotten little skeletons stepped in a finished her off! FIE!!!

Orion, once again, just trashed all of us, scoring 23 Glory Points!? I did... okay... scoring 15, Amanda wasn't too far behing me with 12, and Nic (who was tabled in the second round) only managed to score 9 Glory.

For our second game we played in the Beastgrave

I decided to change things up and broke out Wurmspat with a Nemesis Deck using Break Neck Slaughter Nemesis Deck and chose the  Pool of Fangs board. Amanda continued with the Idonth Deepkin but switched to Cyreni's Razors, just using their own Rivals Deck on the Hive of Sacrifice. Nic tried out Sons of Velmorn with own Rivals Deck on Ravaged Hall. And Orion continued to use Sepulchral Guard with the Rimlocked Relics Nemesis Deck (on Abandoned Lair)

I took Wurmspat because I knew there was a fair chance I'd have to duck out a bit early to get to my book club. I thought I'd just suicide charge them at... whoever... thinking I'd try and score as many points as I could before dying, quickly... But the, after the first round, it looked more like Amanda's warband might get wiped out (by ME!?), so I suggested she could play my warband when I had to leave.

First activation, Ghulough charging Cyreni!

Amanda has sent Alathyrr across the table, deep into the Sepulchral Warden's territory, hoping to take out the warden and STOP them from raising over and over and over...

But Renglaith stuck around to try and defend Cyreni - gave Gulough a good poke! Then Sepsimus also charged in...

Fecula would also charge in and... I think I took out Cyreni... and then for my fourth activation I could have scored an easy point moving Fecula onto an objective... but decided to attack Renglaith again, hoping to finish him off before he got to finish off Gulough in the next round (and score the same amount of glory!?) ... and I missed...

So at the beginning of the second round Renglaith finished off Gulough... I had a new plan, though, based on the cards I drew. I had an upgrade card that I gave to Fecula, that allowed allowed her to move from any edge hex to any other edge hex.

So, Sepsimus ran off and killed Cephanyr the squid...

and then started trying to bonk the sons of Velmorn.

Fecula charged to the nearest edge hex and flung a curse off at Renglaith, hoping to finish him off... and MISSED!?!?

So I think The Prince stepped in a finished off Renglaith... (those fucking sepulchral Guard always stealing my kills!)

BY the time I left only Fecula Flyblown was still alive... and one of Amanda's Thralls, Alathyrr - who was wounded... and standing next to two of the Sepulchral Guard - including the Warden... I thought for sure the Thrall was doomed and she'd just be playing Fecula... (albeit with a COMPLETELY unfamiliar deck!?) I gave her a few pointers about what I'd been planning and ran off to my book club!

Later Amanda reported to me that both her Thrall AND Fecula survived to the end... but, again, Orion scored 23 Glory... Nic scored 10, Amanda scored 9 and the Wurmspat scored only 7...

I'm sure Wurmspat had 6 or 7 when I left!? So I'm guessing Amanda didn't really DO much with Fecula and just concentrated to doing stuff with Alathyrr...? Ah, well...

I had been pretty stoked about trying to knock out Zondara's Gravebreakers, but I think Zarbag's Gitz might be the next warband I finish up!? (along with the Squigherd I'd picked up earlier this year...)

Warhammer Underworlds: Sons of Velmorn

 Another Week, Another Warband...

(Although, I'm not sure I finished one last week, technically... but one of these weeks I'm sure to finish up two, as i'm working on a few simultaneously at any given moment)

The Sons of Velmorn

(Well, it's actually Velmorn and his sons... )

King Morlak Velmorn

Sir Jedrean Falseborn (Velmorn's illegitimate son and bodyguard)

Marshal Faulk Velmorn (The Eldest of Velmorn's sons, heir to the throne and commander of the armies)

Thain, Fourth-and-Last (the Youngest of Velmorn's Sons)

Helmar the Hewer

I think these look really cool. I like the fluff.... but, for some reason, I'm not as jazzed to play these as some of the others. I'm sure I'll play them at least once within the next week... but then I'm pretty sure I want to play more with Skabbik!

They're a nice addition to my Soulblight forces (including Sepulchral Guard and Crimson Court and ALL THE CURSED CITY stuff!).... Lots for a Warcry warband (or, ANY skirmish game!) or for baddies in a role-playing game... What I'm NOT going to do is start building an Age of Sigmar army!!

Work-in-Progress Wednesday - 28 February 2024

Well my birthday weekend started early on Friday when this arrived:

And the weekend continued on with playing a LOT of Warhammer Underworlds!

The deck above was taped to the box and when I took the tape off, it tore the top part of the..  sleeve..?  that the Beastbound Assault Rivals Deck came in. Not a worry, as that just gets pitched away anyway! This adds there more Generic Rivals Decks to the collection giving me a few more to play around with...

That adds NINE more 28mm miniatures to my acquisitions total for the year, brining it to 35... and I've still only painted 12!?

I have since assembled and primed both warbands...

Sons of Velmorn - These look fun... and maybe fairly quick and easy to paint up..?

Gnarlspirit Pack. At first I didn't care for these... but I didn't care for Wurmspat at first either... Seeing some possibilities here. Maybe they will be the grody to the max chaos warband I'd always hoped Wurmspat could have been... We shall see...

What I've been working on most recently are the two Idoneth Deepkin warbands that Amanda is keep to try out...

Elathain's Soulraid

Cyreni's Razors

I'm not over-excited about how they've turned out so far... might go so far as to say Not loving it... I was going to dry-brush on some more silver to tone down the blue a bit, hopefully that will help!

I did do some base coats on a few of the Squigs in the Squigherd... but not much else...

Ephilim's Pandaemonium is still in a prominent position on the workbench... but I don't think I've worked on any of them in the last week... Still keen to get them done and try them out..  I do really LOVE the look of them - which is always THE primary motivating factor for what I'm playing... but I never like feeling like I am (or being perceived that I am) jumping on a bandwagon because something is really good right now in the game right now... which is silly, I know... but I think it's possible that that's possibly a reason I'm not making much headway on these...

Speaking of almost done but stagnating... Blackpowder's Buccaneers remain the closest to being done... but I STILL haven't done a THING on them to just finish them up!?

Thundrik's Profiteers have worked their way onto the workbench again (along with a fellow Kharadron that, I think, came with one of the Warhammer Quest boxes... not sure if it's mine - Cursed City - or one of Finnegans...).

I feel like they'll be very handy for the Adventure I want to run for Soulbound...

As I mentioned in the Warhammer Underworlds Birthday Weekend Shenanigans post...

I did also acquire another copy of the Exiled Dead... but I'll be taking them back later this week to trade in for something else... So not even adding these onto the official acquisitions list...
