black particles - a path in entropy (2024)

In post-rock music, I look for one of three things: either the overpowering melancholia, or the overwhelming guitar heaviness or the energetic blizzard of melodies and fast pace. The Hungarian outfit of black particles redefined the last one with a fantastic album a path in entropy released last November. It's a blast that should never stop.

There is not a second wasted, the band instantly goes to the fast-paced, pure energy kind of music. It is very melodic, but there is no space for idle guitar intros and gentle weeping, it's the juicy tempo from the very beginning. I wanted to pause to grab a coffee, but I was taken by the album's flow and simply couldn't. Luckily, the sound itself is filled with caffeine that makes your body awaken and energized. Especially when you get to the torrent of guitars entitled the stranger in the mirror. This all makes it clear that the musicians have background in post-hardcore, screamo music as the energy is very similar but translated into well-structured, guitar-based compositions. I love it.

black particles - loss function (2022)

Two years after their very promising debut EP called Wave Function Collapse, the Hungarian post-rockers are at it again releasing a short album called loss function. If you need some exciting and adrenaline-fueling instrumental music, this is one for you.

As it was the case with the EP, the Hungarians draw inspiration from science, this time the title's loss function is a function "representing some >cost< associated with an event" (as per Wikipedia) and we are most probably supposed to take it figuratively in which case it can apply to so many areas of our lives. Musically, they take this concept into the very fast and guitar-oriented post-rock music. It's not particularly loud (in the massive kind of way) but it certainly makes the blood pumping and adrenaline kicking with the rapid guitar sounds (as in a fractured view as the best example).

The closer to the album finish, this guitar madness gets more and more impressive. There's little place to catch your breath on this album in general and so maybe it was the point to make it very fast but ultimately not too long for a post-rock release, sort of a sonic way of saying live fast and die young. Very rock'n'roll-like.

loss function costs 6 EUR.

永遠の悪魔 Eternity Devil - 実存的恐怖 (2021)

Ethereal take on very modern electronic music, this is 永遠の悪魔 Eternity Devil, a Hungarian artist who makes "dreampunk and other aesthetic music". This year they released at least two albums, one of which is this highly interesting 実存的恐怖.

The album's title translates to "The horror of Existence" which neatly corresponds with the short poem included at the album's site. the inspirations taken from death and the fragility of human life are clear here. The artist uses them to make the most ethereal kind of electronic music that is close to vaporwave but also ranges from ambient up to heavier industrial sounds (especially in the great Vacuum of Space). And in every second it amazes with the ethereality and psychedelia, both dripping from this weird music. On one hand, the compositions seem to be kept in similar pace and are rather homogeneous, on the other, when dived deeper, the complexity and sweet chaos are staggering.

実存的恐怖  costs whatever you want to pay.

Star Shaped Chimney - The Lab Above the Clouds (2020) EN

Star Shaped Chimney, known also as O'Mons, is an artists who creates his music for the Hungarian label NGC Prod. His or her dark ambient was released on the new album called The Lab Above the Clouds.

Not only the album's title is mysterious here, the artist shows the music as an artifact of the ancient times and in some way it may be true. After all, in a simple way it makes the audience to release some basic, primordial feelings like fear and sadness. The albums consists of two long tracks filled with melancholic and homogeneous soundscapes in which the sea of drones stretches far to the horizon. Or maybe the sea of clouds as this is what the album is about.

The Lab Above the Clouds costs 4 EUR.

Black Particles - Wave Function Collapse (2020) EN

Another debut this week. This time it's the Hungarian post-rock collective Black Particles. Hailing from Budapest, the musicians entitled their first album Wave Function Collapse.

As the unwritten law of post-rock says, it's good to serve this music decorated with some concept from the world of science and metaphysics. Here we have the parallel worlds, because as the artists say "Although an infinite number of possible futures are available every second, the conscious or unconscious choices we make destroy all but one". And so on the album we deal with fittingly epic and massively sounding music. Like in the opening Solace I. - Disintegration that takes some time to develop but it shows a solid, guitar sound.

The album shows a very guitar-oriented post-rock that has everything it needs: atmosphere but also melodies, diverse compositions and crushing walls of sound, and it best sounds probably in Quit | Relapse. Promising debut.

Wave Function Collapse costs 5 EUR.

Abehrum - Ineffable (2019) EN

Abehrum is a solo project by the Hungarian musician József Tóth. You should remember this name as his new album, released after four years after the previous one, called Ineffable is at least very good.

Wherever on the album you look at, there's a lot of world class post-rock. One of the best reasons to support this claim is that absolutely doesn't sound like being made by one person. What's more, it's so much loaded with epic and powerful moments that it could sell it to many full-line-up bands (especially in the title track Ineffable!). Tóth doesn't hold on solid, legit rock riffs but also doesn't overdoes it, avoiding turning Ineffable into a most complicated finger-on-a-string figure competition (which I personally strongly dislike). Good job in this fact is done by heavy and sometimes incredibly unsettling bass line (Hiraeth) gluing the Hungarian's ideas together into one whole.

Ineffable costs 6 USD.

Shallow Seas - Shallow Seas (2018) EN

A Hungarian band that is one big mystery in the Web. They seem to be debuting, but on the other hand, the really good sound of their music and details such as a very well-thought-through logo, may suggest something else. Anyway, it's worth to get to know the world of Shallow Seas on the new album.

Instrumental post-rock from the Hungarians surprises with its uniqueness. It's not a boring mess of calm sounds nor a breath-taking and monumental guitar orgy. It's precisely in the middle of the two extremes with its brilliant compositions, catchy melodies and interesting ways of creating music. Those are, among others, airy backing vocals in Elèphant,  wonderful use of keys in Shallow Seas, or riffs in One Door. The Hungarian band is definitely worth our attention.

Shallow Seas costs 6.5 EUR (2000 HUF).

Carolines - Hullámokkal (2018) EN

Carolines are from Hungary and they give us a small peak into the Hungarian heavy music scene. Their new album (with a beautiful cover art) is called Hullámokkal,  meaning "with the wave" and shows some good, loud and guitar music spiced with expressive vocals.

Aggressive, but in this aggression also extremely energetic sound of the band is balanced with samples appearing from time to time, adding some post-rock/cinematic vibe to the whole thing. But still, the Hungarian's music's core is the screaming, hardcore vocal that sometimes sounds like desperate cries, sometimes like metal scream and sometimes like clean singing. But it wouldn't achieve anything alone without the very solid instrumental layer, more post-rock than punk/hardcore in the way how it is written and how complex it is.

Not to be too monotonous, the band can also create straight post-rock tracks (M4) and more... trip-hop ones (Ember). Also, the exotic vibe in the music is provided by the Hungarian language that is not only mysterious but also very fittingly expressive.

Hullámokkal can be yours for whatever you want to pay.

Overmorrow - A long way 'till accordance (2018) EN

Hungarian post-rock from Pecs, Overmorrow is another instrumental debut in last weeks. And although "A long way 'till accordance" makes a short album, it is absolutely clear that it also shows the artists' promising potential.

Three tracks filled with energetic guitar music u to the top, the music you know you want to move to and you start looking for someone to pogo with. The music balances between lightly dancing guitars (especially in "Third Eye Focus") and walls of unstoppable sound in "Lately, I...".

The short EP should be treated a s a demonstration of the band's abilities and those are undoubted. We need more from the Hungarian artists.

"A long way..." costs 8 EUR (2,500 HUF).

musicformessier - Eclipse (2017) EN

Musicformessier is created by István Csarnogurszky know also as Black Hills or whitecube, who is a specialist in making a moody ambient-like post-rock or "acoustic space art" as he calls it. Spacerock without those tons of glamour, the essence only? Help yourselves!

"Eclipse" is more than just a new single. It contains of older tracks and is a real gem because of collaborations with some loud Bandcamp projects with similar taste in music. And so, there are appearances by Sébastien Touraton known as HeklAa (who collaborated with Csarnogurszky also on "Rivers & Shores"), Peter Sarosdi (Iketa) or Francesco Berta.

But the highlight of the album is undoubtedly the collaboration with the unbelievable Oleksiy Sakevych, who has already appeared on this blog as Endless Melancholy. In their "The Seventh Ocean" the space melancholy by Musicformessier is combined with the sadness of the ocean in Sakevych's sounds. Those two final frontiers have been unapproachable limits for humankind in different parts of its history but they also have emitted this call to see the unknown, the melancholy that is always connected with it. And now they are connected in this one track number 3 on the album.

"Eclipse" costs 1.99 GBP.
