Tombstones in Their Eyes - Looking for a Light (2021)

I appreciate the band led by John Treanor for some time now, and I'm genuinely surprised I didn't post about Maybe Someday, a great album from 2019. Thankfully, the time to fix my errors is here as their new album Looking for a Light is a well-done continuation of the psychedelically noisy career they  have taken.

This music is a slow-paced psychedelic rock meeting stoner, very California-vibing heavy and crunchy guitars. This combined results in mesmerizing compositions filled with non-overwhelming but always well-felt noise. Another thing is that Treanor can writer catchy melodies that certainly stand out throughout the album. That said, the clue of the release is the slow, somewhat gloomy and somewhat relaxing mood, so well heard (and felt) in the title track Looking for a Light with its nostalgic theme and ballad-like construction. This makes me think that the project changed its style, slowing down the pace and smoothing the roughness while maintaining the overall psychedelic overflow, its trade mark and pride.

Holy Motors - Horse (2020) EN

In 2018, the Estonian cowboys of Holy Motors became an absolute sensation of my musical world releasing the super moody and densely dream pop debut album. This autumn they are back with the followup on Horse although the shift in their music is clearly visible.

Obviously, they always seemed to like it, let's take Valley for example, but this time their album is rather an airy approach to alt-country and americana. In the perfectly melancholic vocals of Eliann Tulve still sound the dream pop colours but the whole thing tastes rather of dirt and freedom of the Wild West. The guitars twang and in the backgrounds and are as far from the shoegazing vibes as possible. And then the compositions are keen on getting to a quite a lively pace, as in the opener in Country Church  and the one fitting for some absolutely love ballads as well (Midnight Cowboy).

The lyrics indeed give space for no doubts as to the americana inspirations (as if the cover art, band's pictures or the album title left any). Even in the track titles there's so many Western-related references that the whole release sounds like a concept album actually. And it's no surprise as as far as I know, the Finnish-Estonian music world already knows some Wild West escapades. I won't lie, I preferred the airy dream pop side of the band but the dream country like here is certainly something unique and can't be missed.

Estońscy kowboje z Holy Motors w 2018 roku zrobili w moim światku absolutną sensację super nastrojową i gęsto dreampopową debiutancką płytą. Tej jesieni wracają z kontynuacją na Horse chociaż zaliczyli wyraźną zmianę klimatyczną.

Oni oczywiście zawsze mieli takie ciągoty, choćby w Valley ale tym razem ich płyta to bardzie eteryczne podejście do alt-country i americany. W znakomicie melancholijnym wokalu Eliann Tulve wciąż pobrzmiewają te same dreampopowe barwy ale całość ma w sobie przede wszystkim posmak pyłu i wolności Dzikiego Zachodu. Gitary plumkają w tłach i daleko im od shoegaze'ujących teł jak to tylko możliwe. A do tego kompozycje potrafią naprawdę żwawe tempo, tak jak w otwierającym album Country Church  jak i takie odpowiednie dla absolutnie balladowych piosenek miłosnych (Midnight Cowboy).

Właśnie słowa piosenek nie pozostawiają cienia wątpliwości co do inspiracji americaną (tak jakby okładka, zdjęcia zespołu czy sam tytuł płyty jakieś zostawiały). Już w samych tytułach jest tyle westernowych referencji, że słucha się tego jak concept albumu. Ale to nie powinno zaskakiwać bo zdaje się, że fińsko-estońska scena muzyczna ma już na koncie dziko-zachodowe odjazdy. Nie ma co ukrywać, bardziej podobało mi się duszno-dreampopowe wcielenie zespołu, ale taki dream country to coś wyjątkowego i nie można tego przegapić.

Brother Grimm - On Flatland, on Sand (2019) EN

Dennis Grimm known as Brother Grimm is one of my favourite artists since his impressive gig at 2018's Traumzeit Festival. His album Home Today, Gone Tomorrow is one of the best in its own, weird and dark genre. He made recently a comeback with the new album On Flatland, on Sand.

As he describes himself, it's no coincidence that his scene name refers to the famous literature brothers: "Because this brother Grimm is also devoted to nightmares, but they are of an acoustic nature". In practice it results in very male blues vocal singing lyrics-focused and -heavy songs accompanied by raw guitar sounds, minimal drums and sometimes even delicate guitar noise - which in general gives, let's call it that way, something like post-americana.

Grimm in his music can be aggressively pugnacious but also melancholically peaceful and the latter (as in The Ocean, On Flatland, on Sand) is more to my taste. Still, he can also, as a few artists, interest me in the americana-like music at all.

Brother Grimm - On Flatland, on Sand (2019) PL

Do Dennisa Grimma tworzącego jako Brother Grimm mam sentyment od kiedy zrobił na mnie spore wrażenie w czasie festiwalu Traumzeit w 2018 roku. Jego płyta Home Today, Gone Tomorrow jest jedną z moich ulubionych w swoim, pokręconym i mrocznym gatunku. Teraz wrócił z płytą On Flatland, on Sand.

Jak pisze o sobie to nie przypadek, że w swoim scenicznym imieniu nawiązuje do znanych literackich braci. "Bo ten brat Grimm również poświęca się koszmarom, ale są one bardziej akustycznej natury". W praktyce oznacza to męski, bluesowy wokal śpiewający skupione na słowach piosenki do akompaniamentu surowej gitary elektrycznej, oszczędnych perkusji a czasem wręcz do delikatnego gitarowego noise'u - co w sumie daje coś na kształt post-americany że tak to ujmę.

Grimm potrafi być w swojej muzyki agresywnie przebojowy jak i melancholijno spokojny i właśnie w tych ostatnich aranżacjach (The Ocean, On Flatland, on Sand) podoba mi się najbardziej, chociaż jak niewiele innych artystów potrafi zainteresować mnie też muzyką około americanową. 

On Flatland, on Sand kosztuje niestety aż 52 złote (12 EUR).

If Only the Trees - Drop the Air (2018) EN

If Only The Trees (not to be confused with If These Trees Could Talk) have their own approach to music that combines post-rock guitars and and indie folk rock atmosphere, so they are equally inspired by Mogwai as by The National. You can check out how this combination works on their debut "Drop the Air".

This inspirations can be treated very literally. The vocal parts have the same vibe of americana and American suburbs as Matt Berninger and his band has, while the guitar layer in which the vocals sometimes get lost, and which is built on the folkish part is deafening noise that is hardly worse that the Scottish instrumental blast. Those two ingredients function very often just next to each other (as in the great "The Way They Leave"), but are also satisfying alone, as "Let Alone Love" is a brilliant post-rock piece while "So Much Plenty Of" stands somewhere between what The National and The Black Heart Procession do.

If Only the Trees - Drop the Air (2018) PL

If Only The Trees (nie mylić z If These Trees Could Talk) mają swoje właśnie podejście do muzyki, łącząc w niej post-rockowe gitary i atmosferę z indie folk rockiem, w równym stopniu inspirowaną Mogwai jak i The National. Można tę mieszankę sprawdzić na ich debiutanckim "Drop the Air".

Te inspiracje można traktować bardzo dosłownie: części z wokalem mają tego samego ducha americany i amerykańskiej prowincji, co twórczość zespołu Matta Berningera, natomiast nadbudowana na nich warstwa gitarowa, w której wokal nieraz się gubi, zagłuszony fantastycznym hałasem, w żaden sposób nie jest słabsza od instrumentalnego uderzenia Szkotów. Te dwie składowa słuchać często tuż obok siebie (na przykład w znakomitym "The Way They Leave"), ale potrafią funkcjonować osobno, bo "Let Alone Love" jest fantastycznym kawałkiem post-rockowym, a "So Much Plenty Of" stoi gdzieś między twórczością The National, a The Black Heart Procession.
