Day Aches - Promo "21 (2021)

This is only a short promo EP but it is so interesting I couldn't just skip it. Day Aches are from Washington D.C. and create "monolithic, heavy, yet, dreamy sound". There's not much material here but it's juicy enough to give it a try.

What draws me to their music is the opposition: the vocals here are one of the softest in dreamy music while guitars - one of the heaviest. There's something from heavy rock, stoner music here, or, as the artists see it, grunge, mostly in the massive riffs and crushing ambiance. The psychedelic guitars know no rest throughout the three short compositions on the release and have to be balanced by the airy, particularly dreamy vocals. The band have all they need to create ethereal music. Their works exist to remind us of one of the truest things in life, one that is also seen as a cliche but this doesn't mean it's not right: "to truly appreciate the great moments in life, one must come face to face with bad ones". And this sums up the balance between the harsh and heavy and the soft and soothing in their sound.

etherpool - the asylum colour (2017) PL

Taki shoegaze lubimy, Troy Bradbury i Flip Yates z Waszyngtonu wydali właśnie rozświetloną jak słońce przebijające się przez kolorowe liście płytę jako etherpool. I jak nazwa projektu sugeruje, mamy do czynienia z prawdziwym eterycznym wirem dreampopowo-shoegaze'owych kawałków równie głośnych co nastrojowych.

Kupuje mnie już od pierwszego numeru bo "engines" brzmi jak, nomen omen, dzieło Engineers, którzy zaczęli nagrywać na przyspieszonych obrotach. To nie tylko zwarty, kompleksowy i ogłuszający na wielu poziomach dźwięk, to również podobnie rozproszony wokal oraz niezwykle wbijający się w głowę refren: "our time to decide" powtarzany jak mantra.

Shoegaze'owy hałas dobrze brzmi zwłaszcza w "christaline", gdzie w tle miga nawiązująca do kultowego "Loveless" ogłuszająca elektronika. A mimo to melodia nie traci tu na znaczeniu. Jest też wolniejsza, bardziej balladowa i jednocześnie wpadająca w nieco bardziej tradycyjne rockowe brzmienia strona projektu ujawniająca się w "dead branches" i kończąca płytę coverem innych legend pogranicza - The Cure.

etherpool - the asylum colour (2017) EN

That's the shoegaze we like, Troy Bradbury and Flip Yates from Washington have just released their bright like the Sun coming through colourful leaves album as etherpool. And as the project's name suggests, we deal with a real whirlpool of dreampop-shoegaze airy tracks that are as loud as moody.

I'm bought right after the first song because "engines" sounds like a song by, no pun here, Engineers if they started to play on much higher speed level. It's not only a compact, complex and deafening on many levels sound, it's also similarly diffused vocals and incredibly catchy chorus: "our time to decide" repeated like a mantra.

The shoegaze noise sounds really well, especially in "christaline" in the background of which we can spot an electrical reference to the legendary "Loveless" Nevertheless, the melody here still doesn't loose its importance. There is also a slower, more ballad-like and at the same time getting more traditional rock vibes side of the project that develops in "dead branches" and finishes the album with a cover by another legend of the borderland, The Cure.
