Relay Tapes - Debris (2023)

Jade Tyers of Brisbane, Australia makes his music under the moniker of Relay Tapes. On Debris, their third ever EP, Tyers shows an impressive take on the noisier and heavier kind of noise pop.

Although it is a solo project, it's definitely hard to guess volume-wise. Tyer's music can be downright loud and noisy when it is necessary. The guitar sounds have this nice, crunchy texture that can feel really overwhelming at times, but they give way for the calm, dreamy vocals most of the time. There's a good dose of acoustic guitar here as well, especially when the songs gradually turn more into moody ballads and even industrial/ambient soundscapes (in Debris).

Lowly - Keep Up the Good Work (2023)

In 2019 they shook my musical world withe their near-perfect album Hifalutin. This winter, the Danish band of Lowly finally released their next, third one already, album called Keep Up the Good Work. And they did exactly what they mentioned in the title.

They call themselves "restlessly inventive, exquisitely melodic, and defying easy categorisation" and there's no exaggeration in those words. They create indie pop that borders with everything possible. There's a lot of ambitious electronica and synthpop here, that's for sure. There's some dreampop and noise pop elements (although I feel like less than before, instead, there's more tropical, twee vibes). There's a very broad approach to vocals as they very often function as background sounds for the whole compositions. But the main thing is how easily the Danish create absolute bangers that are catchy and melodic to the extreme. On the last album, it was Children and In the Hearts, now it's Seasons and Keep Up the Good Work.

This kind of experimental in nature but also extremely catchy music with positive vibes makes me think of their latest work as a calmer, more artsy version of what Plastic Mermaids delivered us last year. Both albums being something very special.

MØAA - Euphoric Recall (2021)

Jancy Rae Buffington is MØAA, an artist who creates a very dreamy and moody music, which is kind of strange when you know that the moniker came from the name of a MAO-A gene, one that is connected to aggressive behaviour. She just released her debut album called Euphorics Recall on We Were Never Boring Collective label.

The music here is no punk, that's for sure. And although Rae created her music persona to write about frustrations and her "troubled past", she chose to do that in the form of very dark but also melodic, synth-rich dream pop. What's more, the album was created both in the rainy Washington state and the sunny Italy where the American met Andrea Volpato who is the second part of the project, the one responsible for co-writing the music as well as producing and mastering. This geographical factors may have influenced the way the music here combines the gloomy atmosphere with lively melodies that can be hummed from the very first listening (with the fantastic X Marks as the best example).

O2, on the other hand, combines the very ethereal ambiance and backing vocals with quite noisy form while Lam shows the more post-punk face of the project's synthpop with quite ominous vibes. And the further into the album, the more guitar-based and wavey the songs get, not losing anything from the atmosphere of the dark and moody, trip-hopish beginning.

Bungalow Depression - Blank Slate (2020) EN

Bungalow Depression is a trio out of Normandy in the works of which the ethereal atmosphere mixes with electronica with perfect ratio. At least it's what it's like on their debut album, November's Blank State z listopada.

The albums is opened by the single track The Whirl that is characterized by very nervous and pulsating electronic sounds in the backgrounds on which the whole composition is built. After a while it evolves in a very industrial direction while it's being ornamented by especially interesting vocals by Anne-Laure Labaste. It's a filled with dream pop vibes while also indie pop-like catching. What can't be denied are also trip-hop inspirations, especially Sad Day proves that the musicians have to be fans of Massive Attack.

Dense, dream pop haze is reached especially in Silent Voice in which the air gets stifling from the vocals and electronic mist. This ethereal-electronic-industrial atmosphere lasts throughout the whole album, one so unique in the way it sounds being a marriage between the oldschool dream pop and modern electronic music.

Bungalow Depression - Blank Slate (2020) PL

Bungalow Depression to trio z Normandii, w którego twórczości eteryczne klimaty mieszają się w wyśmienitych proporcjach z elektroniką. A przynajmniej jest tak na ich debiutanckim albumie Blank State z listopada.

Płytę zaczyna singlowy The Whirl odznaczający się bardzo niepokojącą i pulsującą elektroniką, na której zbudowana jest cała kompozycja. Po chwili rozwija się w bardzo industrialnym kierunku, a wszystko okraszone jest wyjątkowo interesującym wokalem Anne-Laure Labaste. Jest on trochę eteryczny w dreampopowych klimatach, z drugiej indiepopowo przebojowy. Nie można zapominać o trip-hopowych inspiracjach zespołu, zwłaszcza Sad Day sprawia wrażenie jakby muzycy byli wielkimi fanami Massive Attack.

Gęsty, dreampopowy haze osiągają zwłaszcza w Silent Voice, gdzie od wokali i elektronicznej mgły aż duszno jest w powietrzu. Ten eteryczno-elektroniczno-industrialny klimat utrzymuje się na całej, unikalnej w swoim brzmieniu płycie będącej poniekąd połączeniem oldschoolowego dream popu i nowoczesnej muzyki elektronicznej.

Gliss - Strange Heaven (2018) EN

The duet Victoria Cecilia - Martin Klingman play as Gliss for over a decade now, they are known for creating very atmospheric and at the same time catchy dreampop combining the American art-pop with Scandinavian climate. Or, as they describe it on their Bandcamp site, "fucked up noise pop".

Their new album released by Kraftwööd Musik Fabrik is no exception. It is filled with delicate electronic sounds responsible for the "strange" from te album title and with "heaven" in the form of the angelic vocals by both Victoria and Martin. However, there's not that much of noise here, only some parts have the clear guitar in the foreground ("Strange Heaven", the tack), the band is more focused on the plasticity of basses and the beauty of electronically generated melodies. No way to blame them, especially that they can be called the electronic the Kills".

You can list some tracks that stand out like "Ja Ja: that stays with you thanks to especially well sounding vocals, industrially unsettling "Hand to the Wall" (with backgrounds that look like taken from more experimental music, maybe from the new album by Suuns, but still fits great here) ot he sad ballad "Hold Your Breath For Me".

Gliss - Strange Heaven (2018) PL

Duet Victoria Cecilia - Martin Klingman grają jako Gliss już od ponad dekady, dali się poznać jako twórcy bardzo nastrojowego i jednocześnie przebojowego dreampopu łączącego amerykański art-pop ze skandynawskim klimatem. Albo, jak piszą na swoim bandcampowym koncie - pojebanego noise popu.

Ich nowa płyta wydana przez Kraftwööd Musik Fabrik nie jest żadnym odstępstwem od normy. Zapełniają ją delikatne dźwięki elektroniki odpowiadające za to "strange" z tytułu i "heaven" w postaci anielskich wokali zarówno Victorii jak i Martina. Mniej jest za to noise'u, czytelnie gitarowe jest tylko kilka fragmentów (tytułowe "Strange Heaven"), zespół stawia jednak na plastyczność basów i urodę generowanych elektroniką melodii. Nie da się ich za to winić, jak żadnego zespołu, o którym można powiedzieć "elektroniczne the Kills".

Wymienić można kilka wyróżniających się utworów - zapadający w pamięć dzięki znakomicie brzmiącemu wokalowi "Ja Ja", niepokojąco industrialne w tłach "Hand to the Wall" (ten podkład bardziej wygląda jak z muzycznych eksperymentów typu nowa płyta Suuns ale i tak został wkomponowany idealnie) czy smutne ballada "Hold Your Breath For Me".

Divenere - Forever (2018) EN

The Italian Divenere are far from being debutants, they've been building up their brand on the Apennine Peninsula for over a decade. Their new album shows how they succeeded. Warm and loud shoegaze is the best thing you can imagine for this cold "spring" now. And for when someone says "goodbye".

The Italians know what they want, they say they play "comfortable sound, covered by reverbs, without any genre to follow". And then there's another poetic sentence implying that they are no strangers to playing anything from rock, shoegaze, indie up to pop music "as a sunny day suddenly turns melancholically stormy".

Those pop-related references are not coincidental as after listening to "Forever", you'll find out that there was no single song you could call "worse", that all of them are noteworthy for their melodies and atmosphere. The latter is dreamy and blurred, just like the band's photo. All of the songs are worthy to remember and it's both the ones with airy and moody vocals (perfect "Floating") or the ones that are symphonies of the noisy nostalgia played "only" with instruments ("Willy Wonka").  The music here is as beautiful as the album's cover.

Divenere - Forever (2018) PL

Włoskie Divenere to absolutnie nie są debiutanci, budują swoją markę na półwyspie Apenińskim już od kilkunastu lat. Ich nowa płyta pokazuje dlaczego. Ciepły i głośny shoegaze to najlepsze, co można sobie wyobrazić w czasie tego zimnego przedwiośnia. Albo, gdy ktoś mówi do ciebie "żegnaj".

Włosi mają o sobie wyrobione zdanie, piszą, że chcą grać "wygodne dźwięki otulone reverbami, nie zamykając się w ramach żadnego konkretnego gatunku". Potem następuje kolejne poetyckie zdanie, z którego wynika, że nie obce jest dla nich granie rocka, shoegaze'u, indie czy nawet popu, tak jak "słoneczny dzień potrafi stać się nagle melancholijnie burzowym".

Te nawiązania do popu mają dużo sensu, gdy po przesłuchaniu "Forever" odkryjesz, że żadna piosenka nie odstawała poziomem, że każda zapadła w pamięć swoją melodią i klimatem. Ten ostatni jest senny i rozmyty, tak jak senne i rozmyte jest zdjęcie zespołu. Każdy utwór wart jest zapamiętania i to niezależnie od tego, czy czaruje nastrojowym wokalem (znakomite "Floating") czy jest symfonią hałaśliwej nostalgii zagranej "jedynie" na instrumentach ("Willy Wonka"). Muzyka piękna jak ilustracja na okładce albumu.

Blurred City Lights - Volker (2018) EN

We know this line-up from some place: Jarek Leśkiewicz (also in Opollo) and Dean Garcia helped by Rose Berlin. That's why Blurred City Lights sounds in a way as if the musicians of SPC ECO got their hands on heavy guitar sounds maintaining their electronic heritage as well.

Although the name of the project as well as the album cover art have somewhat synth vibe in them (in a bladerunnerish way), the music sounds a bit different. Unlike SPC ECO, Leśkiewicz takes part of the vocal side of the project and sounds like Mariusz Duda of Riverside (although the atmosphere on "Volker" reminds more of his solo works). While when it's Berlin's turn to sing, she brings tons of her magical, airy sound, I'm a huge fan of her voice (for example in the brilliant "Don't Let Go").

A good summary of BCL's music is made by "Night Crawlers" in which heavy guitar riff exists together with electronic samples and barely audible modified voices in the background. The whole album is a great mixture and like not many others would make a perfect soundtrack for a night life of a city.

Blurred City Lights - Volker (2018) PL

Już skądś znamy skład Jarek Leśkiewicz (również Opollo) i Dean Garcia wspomagani mocno przez Rose Berlin. Stąd Blurred City Lights brzmi w zasadzie jak SPC ECO, którego muzycy dorwali się do mocnych, gitarowych dźwięków nie odrzucając przy tym w kąt swojego elektronicznego dziedzictwa.

O ile nazwa projektu jak i okładka nastrajają bardziej synthowo (w bladerunnerowy sposób), tymczasem muzyka na płycie brzmi inaczej. W odróżnieniu do SPC ECO, wokalem udziela się (poza kawałkami z udziałem Berlin) sam Leśkiewicz i brzmi w nich jak Mariusz Duda z Riverside chociaż klimat na "Volkerze" bardziej przypomina solowe dokonania Dudy. Gdy za śpiewanie bierze się wokalistka SPC ECO, z marszu dodaje projektowi tonę magii i eterycznego brzmienia, jestem olbrzymim fanem jej głosu (np.w fantastycznym "Don't Let Go").

Dobrym przekrojem muzyki BCL jest "Night Crawlers", w którym obok ciężkiego gitarowego riffu egzystują elektroniczne sample i czające się na granicy słuchu modyfikowane głosy. Cała płyta jest doskonałą mieszanką i doskonale nadaje się na soundtrack dla nocnego życia miasta.

UNIFORMS - EQUALS (2018) EN

UNIFORMS is made of four Andalusian girls - Pan, Laura, Spingel and Annie who fascinated by the likes of Slowdive, KVB but also Tame Impala decided to turn to noisy pop music. Their debut entitled "EQUALS" tells me it was a good decision.

The catchiness of the compositions sung with this high-pitched female vocal plus very loud and very feisty guitars make the characteristic traits of the band. From the very first "Addicted" they hit the audience with engaging atmosphere of guitar noise. And even if "pearls" is perhaps more melody-focusing and "Don't wake up" more oneiric, it's audible that the band know what they want to play. And they absolutely caught m attention.

"EQUALS" can be yours for whatever you decide to pay.

UNIFORMS to cztery Andaluzyjki - Pan, Laura, Spingel i Annie, które zafascynowane Slowdive, KVB ale też Tame Impala postanowiły poświęcić się graniu hałaśliwego popu. Ich debiut "EQUALS" pokazuje, że była to dobra decyzja.

Przebojowość kompozycji wyśpiewywanych wysokim, dziewczęcym wokalem, a do tego bardzo głośne i bardzo zadziorne gitary to znak rozpoznawczy zespołu. Od samego początku tej krótkiej płyty, od "Addicted" uderzają w słuchacza z ogromną siłą tworząc wciągającą atmosferę gitarowego noise'u. Mimo, że np "Pearls" jest być może bardziej nastawiona na melodię, a "Don't wake up" na oniryczną atmosferę to słychać, co zespół chce osiągnąć. I z pewnością ma moją uwagę.

Кроль - Тьма (2017) EN

Darkness is not only a title of the new album by the Russian project called Кроль, darkness is something that pours out of every note of their dark dreampop music. Aided by a range of musicians duo Olga "Jorgan" Roshtchina - Carl "Valerius" Renstalbaldanken serves something between folk and electronic dreampop in a very unnerving shape.

Кроль's music is a mixture of Roshtchina's mesmerizing vocal and super interesting blending of guitars and electronic music. And there's also this dark, slow atmosphere generated by beats and guitar noise polluting the backgrounds. Great effect is also created by cooperation with another vocalist, Julya Nakaryakova in "Как хорошо, что ты не здесь" that shows how easy it is for the artists to make catchy music pieces. But, together with lyrics ("So good you are not here") and dark instrument sounds, it aligns with the atmosphere of the rest of the album.

Another well done trick was to base "Огонь в поле плевел", which sounds like a folk lamentation, on the sound of Chinese folk instrument called hulu. The second part of the album is generally more folk-ish and for some reasons this blending of folk and modern music sounds as if they were born to accompany each other.

Кроль - Тьма (2017) PL

Mrok to nie tylko nazwa nowej płyty rosyjskiego projektu Кроль, mrok to coś, co wylewa się z każdej nuty tej dark dreampopowej muzyki. Wspomagany przez szereg muzyków duet Olga "Jorgan" Roszczina - Carl "Valerius" Renstalbaldanken serwuje coś pomiędzy folkiem a elektronicznym dreampopem w bardzo niepokojącej formie.

Muzyka Кроль to wypadkowa głębokiego, hipnotyzującego wokalu Roszcziny i bardzo ciekawej mieszaniny gitar i elektroniki. Do tego dochodzi mroczna, niespieszna atmosfera generowana przez miarowe bity i zanieczyszczające całość gitarowe tła. Znakomicie brzmi również współpraca z inną wokalistką, Julią Nakarjakową w "Как хорошо, что ты не здесь", który pokazuje łatwość komponowania przebojowych utworów muzyków formacji. Co z tego, skoro wraz z tekstem ("Jak dobrze, że cię tu nie ma") i mrocznym instrumentarium utwór wpasowuje się w atmosferę reszty albumu.

Kolejnym udanym posunięciem jest oparcie "Огонь в поле плевел", brzmiącego jak folkowy lament, na brzmieniu chińskiego ludowego instrumentu hulusi. W drugiej części płyty utwory generalnie mają bardziej folkowe zacięcie - i z jakichś powodów taka mieszanina muzyki ludowej i nowoczesnej brzmi jakby były one dla siebie stworzone.

REIGHNBEAU - FINGERTIPS (2018) EN

"All sounds by Bryce Hample" says the Bandcamp website of this project. Sometimes he gets aid by his "lovely friends" too. Those phrases fit perfectly the undoubted intimacy of REIGHNBEAU from New Mexico's music.

If you prefer to know hat instrument you are listening to at the moment, this is not an album for you. "FINGERTIPS" is ruled by a sea of sounds, homogeneous like a pudding and equally involving. Mesmerizing synths accompanied by delicately pulsating beats with distant and hidden vocals make a perfect recipe for an airy music trance. It is especially true in an impressively complex "BESIDE" (not to be confused with another song, "BEDSIDE") and in swarming with overlapping vocals "A WHOLE TO FILL".

REIGHNBEAU - FINGERTIPS (2018) PL

"Wszystkie dźwięki na tej płycie stworzył Bryce Hample" można przeczytać na bandcampowej stronie projektu. Czasem pomagali mu jednak "wspaniali przyjaciele". Te opisy wpisują się w niekwestionowaną intymność projektu REIGHNBEAU z Nowego Meksyku.

Jeśli lubisz wiedzieć jakiego instrumentu własnie słuchasz, ta płyta nie jest dla ciebie. Na "FINGERTIPS" króluje bowiem morze dźwięków, jednolite jak masa budyniowana ciasto i równie wciągająca. Hipnotyzujące synthy wspomagane delikatnie pulsującymi bitami z zasłoniętym daleko w tle wokalem to recepta na eteryczny muzyczny odlot. Krótka płyta Amerykanina znakomicie się do tego nadaje. A zwłaszcza fascynująco złożony "BESIDE" (nie mylić z "BEDSIDE") oraz rojący się od nakładających się na siebie wokalów "A WHOLE TO FILL".

Blacanova - La Cabeza (2018) EN

My favourite Spanish band comes back with a new album. And that's great news as "La Cabeza" (or "The Head") is a worthy successor of "Blacanova" and "Regiones Devastadas". The Andalusians serve another dose of fantastically atmospheric dreampop sounding as it was born in the far North, not in the sunny Sevilla.

As we got accustomed to on the previous albums, "La Cabeza" offers dense shoegazing dreampop whose characteristic trait is the dialogic vocals - male and extremely airy female one. The songs are also not deprived of catchiness as the single "Una mujer venezolana" is singable from the very first moments. Other tracks fascinate with their mesmerizing guitars making the vocals sound as if they were taken out of dreams (check out the extremely oneiric "El ángel exterminador" for example).

The music and the vocals create a soothing mixture that is rarely disrupted by slightly more aggressive guitars (as in "El abismo"). it's clear that the Spaniards concentrated on continuing the sound from their previous albums, no wonder they recorded this album, just like "Regiones Devastadas" with Raúl Pérez. With the new album, Blacanova makes a powerful statement that they belong to Europe's shoegazing top league.

Blacanova - La Cabeza (2018) PL

Mój ulubiony hiszpański zespół powraca z nową płytą. I całe szczęście bo "La Cabeza" (czyli "Głowa") jest godną następczynią "Blacanovy" i "Regiones Devastadas". Andaluzyjczycy po raz kolejny pokazują fantastycznie klimatyczny dreampop, który brzmi jakby narodził się na dalekiej północy a nie w słonecznej Sewilli.

Tak jak przyzwyczaili nas na poprzednich płytach, "La Cabeza" oferuje nam gęsty shoegaze'ujący dreampop, którego charakterystycznym punktem jest dialogowość wokali - męskiego i wyjątkowo eterycznego kobiecego. Piosenkom na płycie nie brakuje też przebojowego potencjału - singiel "Una mujer venezolana" wpada w ucho od pierwszych chwil. Inne natomiast zachwycają hipnotyzującymi gitarami, na których tle łagodne wokale brzmią jak wyjęte ze snów (sprawdźcie na przykład wyjątkowo oniryczny "El ángel exterminador").

Muzyka i wokale tworzą kojący miks z rzadka przerywany nieco bardziej drapieżnymi gitarami (jak w "El abismo"). Widać, że Hiszpanie stawiają na kontynuacje swojego brzmienia znanego fanom z poprzednich płyt, czego przejawem jest też fakt, że za miksowanie odpowiada, podobnie jak przy "Regiones Devastadas" - Raúl Pérez. Swoją nową płytą Blacanova potwierdza, że należy do najwyższej europejskiej ligi shoegaze'u.

Seyfert - Boa Noite/Boa Sorte (2018) EN

Seyfert is a solo project of André Luiz, that evolved into a four-pieces band with Yasmin Cruz as a vocalist. The Brazilians have just released their album "Boa Noite/Boa Sorte" where they emit so much eclecticism that doesn't make the atmosphere of the album any less unique.

Diversity is what's the most characteristic for this album. It starts with a delicate neoclassic intro and if it made someone less vigilant, they can be really surprised when "Nomes e Datas" 's guitars suddenly hit. They are not very loud but surely are aggressive. Still though, they go down quite quickly and Seyfert's music becomes relaxing ("Pointeros") and even... electronically epic ("Transcurso").

Another surprise is the appearing of vocals in the second part of the album. Both the male one (in progressive rock-ish "Morfeu") and female (in the beautiful ballad "210117") fit well into the already established mood of the album. The real game changer though is the last track that lasts well over quarter and in which the band's eclecticism is closed within one track.

Two cherries on top appear in the Bandcamp's account of the group where you can download Mogwai's covers. And the Brazilians have great taste as they chose probably the most beautiful songs by the Scots, especially "Take Me Somewhere Nice".
