Hand to Earth - Ŋurru Wäŋa (2025)

This is a special project, you can see it in the album title in Wáglilak language, you can see it in the multi-ethnic line-up and the music itself. The latter can be only described as world music meeting dark ambient and this thought alone would make me very excited to try these sounds.

There is a lot to read about the album (and I recommend doing so on the project's Bandcamp page), but the main things are that sense of belonging and the notion of home are the main themes here. This cannot be a surprise since the members of the projects come from very different places. However, whenever this happens, people very soon discover that it doesn't matter at all as their home can easily encompass entire planet.

There are Korean poems and singing in one of the native Australian tongues that represent the folk/world music part and the minimalist, dark but also quite surprisingly uplifting and soothing backgrounds that add up to the ambient part of the music. The effects are mesmerizing, especially that they are fueled by the use of various (and so different from each other) instrument as the music here is "written in the scribble of electronics, in the sighs of the clarinet and trumpet, in the broad brush strokes of the yidaki, and the snap of the bilma" (kudos to those of you who know what those are, I didn't).

thisquietarmy x otay:onii - Howl and Tell (2025)

;">
The collaboration between two outstanding experimental musician, thisquietarmy (Eric Quach) and otay:onii (Lane Shi) had to bear some exciting and valuable fruits. And, surprise, surprise, it did! Long and spacious, yet deeply intense. Imagine industrial ambient and noise folk music from your beautiful nightmares.

As mentioned on their instagram, the project was born during the 2023 tour that Quach went on in Europe and where Shi was supposed to be an opening act, but quickly got introduced in the main one as well. And I have to tell you, it was rather clear that the two would find a common language. The industrial soundscapes with noisy guitar sounds hidden in the backgrounds, lurking from the shadows fits perfectly with Shi's vocal improvisations that you can feel on your skin. Even when the backgrounds attack the most with the raw and dirty sounds, the vocals are still the most important to me. But maybe I'm just drawn to their uniqueness so much.

This autumn, otay:onii is playing a gig in Warsaw and I'd love to see her live finally. Maybe this will sooth the regrets I have from not going to thisquietarmy's performance at dunk!festival:)

L'ivrenoir - chap.10 : l'eigenlicht (2023)

There's something particularly interesting in the French scene of experimental folk/darkwave music. The new example for this statement is the Lille-based trio called L'ivrenoir who have already released some music with the newest being the EP called chap.10 : l'eigenlicht.

The band "shakes up the codes of narrative music by plunging the listener into a paradoxical atmosphere. A musical oxymoron from which exhales a dark light...". While the vocals are fairly standard for this kind of music (although they feel particularly close to the listener, as if an unsettling kind of ASMR), the most interesting part is the music in the backgrounds: with no traditional drums but with a clarinet instead. With this acoustic vibe but with hard to miss rhythm. With ridiculously energetic pace but with the tangible sense of darkness behind it. Something to keep an eye on, that's for sure.

Orbel - Lur Hezea (2022)

The artists singing in Basque are getting present on this blog. After Arima from the Basque Country, it is time for the band from the northern side of the Pyrenees, Orbel. Coming from Bayonne, the musicians create something from the borders of darkwave and nightmarish dream pop and hey showed it on their second album called Lur Hezea.

The album's title translates to "wet soil" and it only strengthens the overall impression that there's tons from folk culture in the band's music. The ancient, ritualistic nature of their art took form that is close to the dark folk/darkwave blend that is fairly popular i various places in Europe. But the vibes here are certainly more artsy: the music is dark but also far from being simple, the compositions create tones of atmosphere but not in the easiest ways possible. The minimalist background electronica works in a fantastic way in this surroundings too. It's artsy darkness.

The band decided to switch their sound from post-rock/metal into what they call "oscillating between tribal rhythms and funeral introspections, like an ancient pagan ritual" and I ave to say that it seems to have been a really good decision. Especially when they incorporate some other genres into their tasty blend: like tribal folk in Irentsi or noisy backgrounds in Okerra

Darkher - The Buried Storm (2022)

Jayn Maiven creates her music as Darkher. And what a music it is! The moniker she uses is a perfect fit here as there's few music genres that can be as dark as her post-rock/dark folk creations. 6 years after her debut album Realms, the British artist is back and The Buried Storm is certainly one of the best albums of the year.

It is said that Darkher's music is a "haunting trip through the mind and spirit of founding member". It is based on Maiven's mesmerizing vocals that are never angry and desperate: their gloomines is leaning towards the utter sadness and depressive resignation. They have some serious tear-jerking abilities but they are also so beautiful. Hunting, yes, but also subtle and pretty. And the vocals are not alone here: the darkness of the compositions is built by the dark folk music with tons of post-rock and noise traces, heavy vials of ethereal backing vocals and the unnerving tribal fragments. The music is so oneiric but it's not about good dreams, a nightmare pop could be a genre invented for this release. No wonder that it is advertised as "eerie and at times even outright sinister sonic storytelling" with the artist aiming to address the "darkness lurking at the edge of consciousness, hidden from plain sight but patiently biding its time to strike out at the heart", the title's burried storm.

The Buried Storm costs 6.99 USD.

Flower and Pines - Hnieŭ (2022)

Jegor Mickiewicz and Sasha Pushkin are based in Wrocław and create this extremely unique music that combines a lot from a lot of genres. And then some. It's no wonder that the artists' names are also the names of the most important writers in Poland (Adam Mickiewicz) and in Russia (Alexander Pushkin). Their new EP, Hnieŭ, is certainly one of the most interesting releases in Poland this year.

This is not an ordinary album, it's said to be "sonic performance" that is meant to be a "memorial service and an ode to courage". The fact that it is performed in Belarusian, the forbidden language in the modern Belarus, only provides a broader context and explains whose courage it is meant to praise. The noisy and experimental on many levels music has some of the east sacral vibe that is certainly only strengthen by the impressive and very original vocals. It is folk, it is dark, there's so many things going on in the backgrounds and each of them adds to the overall mysterious atmosphere.

ASHTORETH - Rites III-IV (2021)

Peter Verwimp released his Rites I and II in 2019. Since then he was involved in other projects and cooperations but it's finally time for the followup in the form of Rites III-IV, making the Cyclic Law's release one of the highlights of the ambient music at the end of the last year.

As Ashtoreth is "the preeminent goddess in the Bible, and the plural Ashtaroth is a generic term for goddesses", it's no wonder that Verwimp's music is all about the pagan-sounding, sacral and dark ambient. It is a sea of gloomy, minimalist electronica that is filled with horror-like, unnerving whispering vocals and distorted instrument sounds. The soundscapes he produces sound mystical and very mysterious and are supposed to explain people's "interconnectedness with nature as a whole and the necessity to acknowledge and use this connection as an amplifier of thoughts, ideas and emotions". One thing is certain, this is one of the darkest ambient pieces of the year.

Hiemis - Zothique (2021)

Juan Carlos Toledo is known as a member of Silent Love of Death and under the moniker of Hiemis. As the latter, the Spaniard releases albums filled with dark and tribal-characterized ambient music, probably best sounding on his newest work called Zothique.

His music makes subtle soundscapes collide with clear folk-like drums and unnerving chanting, a perfect recipe for dark and unsettling ambient music. The gloomy parts generate such a massively spooky atmosphere, but in my opinion, the tribal folk intrusions are what really fuel the darkness here: it certainly has the vibes of folk-inspired horror movies and I'm here for it. The pretty complex album goes on and on without losing anything from this dark grip and this is something that should be appreciated.

WatchCamp November-December '21 with Ai fen, Pierre Andersson Ek, Avalon Skies, Hiroe, Sweet Sore

Ai fen - Can You Believe?

The Polish-Chinese Czech Republic-based artist is already fairly known in the offstream environment here. This time, she comes back with a new single that showcases her airy but also very much experimental electronic pop with outstanding vocals. The single costs 1 EUR (20 CZK).

Pierre Andersson Ek - Vår värld

The "artist and neighborhood rascal" from the southern part of Sweden creates nugaze music that can be carefully compared to the icons such as Nothing or The Pains of Being Pure at Heart; his music consists of loud and noisy guitars (with such a good quality to them!) and melodic, soft vocals; I love it. Two tracks cost 6 EUR (56 SEK).

Avalon Skies - Wanderer's Dream

Antti Pihlajaniemi creates "electronic yet organic, earthly yet otherworldly music" which translates to a blend of electronica and minimal dark folk with very dark and airy atmosphere, sounding very Finnish-like really. The original version includes a metal-like voice in spoken word parts, but, to be honest, I prefer the second, instrumental version. The two versions cost 2 EUR.

Hiroe - demos

The Philadelphia-based fresh post-rock band released their demos, and while I'm usually very hesitant towards demo material, this time it absolutely rocks. Two tracks present so much good quality guitar-based instrumental music that I can't wait to hear some more from the Americans. The album costs 7 USD.

Sweet Sore - Resonance

The South African artist Justin Mitchell has been releasing singles and short albums for several years now. His new single presents a moody bedroom dream pop with barely audible vocals and a lot of background drones. The single with a short intro costs whatever you want to pay.

Ylva de Lune - I (2021)

Ylva de Lune is Ylva - singer/songwriter from Germany, together with Alpha who is responsible for the music part of the project. Their cooperation results in a blend of dark folk and metal music that they show on the debut album entitled simply  I.

The Germans took doom metal with its slow pace and monumental vibes and created a kind of its acoustic version. The vocals are clear and extremely airy but also have this vibe characteristic for female vocalists of metal music. There's a lot of heavy guitar noise in the music layer but there are also parts of contemplation and peace, (almost) no sign of metal's crazy drums means that the whole thing tastes more melancholic and depressive, simply speaking, it's what autumn could sound like if it was music (and the cover art only makes it obvious). Especially that the musicians don't hide their inspirations taken from shoegaze and blackgaze that result in the airy backing vocals that add to the release's ethereal atmosphere.

But the music is able to climb towards post-metal and even doom metal level, surprise the audience with very loud and somewhat rapid parts in the best way possible (a good example is Les ombres du Monde that, towards the end, brings a lot of noisy guitar fun or 11:55 with the most intriguing use of the metal-like automatic drums). And generally, the further into the album, the more visible the metal nature of the artists is, the higher the pace, the more crushing the sounds. You should like this album no matter if you're more into melancholic dark folk or impressive doom, as do I.

Feral Atom - I Dream in Blue (2021)

I was watching Ola Beręsewicz's beginnings as Feral Atom since the first single Love. I, nomen est omen, loved it so much that every new track seemed to me slightly worse, it's a bit paradoxical. But now, as her EP debut I Dream in Blue is finally available, I can see that whatever she does is simply brilliant and together, the songs create a well-leveled and coherent whole.

You can hardly say this album is not focused on the atmosphere. The way she uses the slightly higher-pitched and airier backing vocals adds to the album's surreal ambiance while her beautiful and very dark voice sets the whole in the eery and fairy-tale-like place that inspires both awe and fright at the same time. The same is true about the ever-so-slow pace and some guitar solo accents all over the album. I'll still argue that Love is the highlight of the release. It is the most atmospheric and the darkest track here and I will not deny that when I heard it for the first time, I baptized the artist "the Polish Chelsea Wolfe". Now I can see that Beręsewicz goes in her own direction but some similarities are still there and it makes for the best compliment in my eyes. She sings about love mostly, but this darker, well-thought-through take on the topic makes it so much profound - also in Czas ("Time"), the only song with Polish lyrics here - one about love and nature and the feeling of longing for both of them.

Feral Atom debuted on stage during the recently held Soundrive Festival and everyone who was there saw that she showed no trace of a debut stress while her music sounded as mysterious and climactic on the festival's Secret Spot stage as it does on this EP.

I Dream in Blue costs 2.5 EUR (10 PLN).

Lucy Kruger & The Lost Boys - Transit Tapes (For Women Who Move Furniture Around) (2021)

Lucy Kruger, the half of the brilliant Medicine Boy duo she created with André Leo, started her solo career a while ago, but Transit Tapes (For Women Who Move Furniture Around)  is the first album she releases after the band ceased to exist. She performs her music together with The Lost Boys that consist of Liú Mottes, Andreas Miranda and Martin Perret, however there's no argue that Kruger is the project's leading force.

She comes from South Africa but lives now in Germany, and this album, as a follow-up to her 2019's Sleeping Tapes for Some Girls release, "documents Lucy's first year and a half after moving to Berlin". The foundation of her music is being minimalist and dark at the same time,  showing "the bare bones of the songs, a slow burning psychedelic folk that is both intimate and ambient". This puts more focus on lyrics and the artist's mesmerizing and delicate voice - it is music closer to singer/songwriter phenomenon than Medicine Boy's was, but it is filtered though the same, utterly sad and slowcore-paced vibes.

And just like on Leo's solo album earlier this year Kruger helped him with certain parts, Leo had a role to play on this album as well, and I still find it so very cute. It does make the longing after Medicine Boy less painful.

Fuzzy Lights - Burials (2021)

I can't stress enough how important for me was the band's 2010 album Twin Feathers. It brought me into the world of atmospheric, post-rock-influenced post-folk and I love it until now. Finally, after over a decade since this one and 8 years after the last album, the British band released a new one and it brings the same kind of vibes I missed.

Their approach to music is very characteristic: on one hand it is clearly inspired by folk music with the inclusion of violins and the way they address folk mythology-like themes in the lyrics. On the other, the compositions are very much guitar-based and particularly noisy, this is some real post-rock meets post-folk situation. And the style hasn't changed over the years much - Rachel Watkins' delicate but also clear vocals, violins ' role (very familiar in Maiden's Call) and the torrential guitar noise that is so mesmerizing and unnerving at the same time.

The album is opened by the single Maiden's Call which makes an instant post-folk hit but is followed by noisy ten minutes of Songbird - a song that doesn't follow your typical song's construction but is pure and unrefined beauty. This may actually be the main difference between the old and the new sound of the band: it seems their music is noisier, the guitars are coarser and more rock-like. But it sounds so well, be it in the most lively songs like Under the Waves or the moody post-rock ballads. Also, let's mention the absolutely staggering cover art picture.

Burials costs 7 GBP.

Peter Bjärgö - The Translucency of Mind's Decay (2021)

The Swedish artist makes music for almost 30 years now, his discography is impressive and now it's time for its next part. Released with Cyclic Law, the new album The Translucency of Mind's Decay brings some of the darkwave nostalgia in a surprising form.

It is opened with very cinematic sounds of the title track - ones the epic vibes of which make you feel like you suddenly appeared within a completely different realm that surrounds you entirely. Especially that the vocals here have those folk/fantasy vibes with very darkwave twist within them. And this is the general ambiance of the release: there's a lot of ghostly backing vocals, Medieval-like instrumental sounds, and this general feeling of being in a very epic dream, which is true especially for tracks like Honoré de Balzac-inspired Séraphita.

Irena and Vojtěch Havlovi - Melodies in the Sand (2021)

Irena and Vojtěch Havlovi (or The Havels for the English-speaking audience) is a duo from Czech Republic that's together on the stage for over 30 years now (or even more as they were part of a band called Capella Antiqua e Moderna). It seems that their last album is an already a decade-old Tuláci V Zrcadlovém Sále so it's a good opportunity to refresh their works with this collection of songs taken from various part of the duo's career, called Melodies in the Sand .

The Czechs do great job in combining neoclassical instrumental music, mostly piano and heavy-sounding strings, with experiments with vocals that create a haze made of voices and whispers which is an utterly atmospheric and mysterious thing to do. Most of the compositions here are instrumental though. They are both minimalist in the sense of being created on maximum two instruments (as far as I can say) and dark/moody which doesn't always go together that well. They are also featured with an "ability to penetrate and enrich the innermost corners of a perceptive human soul, a gift which they share with sincerity and humbleness". And also, I'd never heard of them before so I consider myself lucky it finally changed.

Melodies in the Sand costs 7 EUR.

Wombed - Still Nothing (2021)

Last year I was shocked and then super sad over the news about Medicine Boy splitting up and eventually amazed by the way they said their good byes to the audience. It hasn't been long to find out what half of the duo, André Leo, is up to. He just showed his debut solo EP called Still Nothing and it's exactly what you would imagine it to be.

Leo describes his music as coming out of his "love of acoustic roots music and minimal, melancholic ambiance" and then adding an extremely picturesque statement that it's "cough syrup blues". And yes, the blues/folk/americana vibes are oozed on by pitch black atmosphere and slowcore pace that both are taken from your blackest but not necessarily worst dreams. The whole material sounds surprisingly but also absolutely not surprisingly like it could be featured on Medicine Boy's album, perhaps as b-sides. It's obviously not a bad thing as the band reached unbelievable levels of black dream pop class and it was very much Leo's credit.

Also, I love how he still works with Lucy Kruger, his partner from Medicine Boy, on some stuff and even dedicates the last but one track to her. Cute.

Dagmar Gertot - Os Lacrimale (2020) EN

First time I heard about Dagmar Gertot while posting about Darja Kazimira's album last year. It quickly turned out that the two artists are a perfect fit and their fascinating approach to the art in general inspires me all the time. The Russian released a new album and it has to be said that Os Lacrimale fits so well to their unique style.

It's difficult to describe the artist's music. For sure there's something from the Balkan and Roma people folklore there, certainly a lot of dark ambient and folk the liveliness of which is washed out so only the extremely strong atmosphere prevails. A lot of experiments with vocals too because the compositions here are as minimalist as can be, except of various forms of vocals, there's only single instruments playing in the backgrounds. But those are widely represented, from accordion to Bosnian folk batalo.

Gertot's music is not a simple one - there's tons of improvisation here with this very theatre-like mood with grotesque, unsettling and art in general. The artist's experiments, just like it is in her visual art works, is well though through and extremely unique. This atmosphere of the higher artism is her characteristic trait.

Dagmar Gertot - Os Lacrimale (2020) PL

Taka atmosfera wyższego artyzmu to jej znak rozpoznawczy.

Rïcïnn - Nereïd (2020) EN

Rïcïnn is a project led by violinist and composer Laure Le Prunenec known for her cooperation with Igorrr. This unorthodox thing consists of, as they describe themselves, "Voices, Violins and drums, flying over fantastic landscapes". And this is exactly the landscape they are serving on their second album Nereïd.

These vowels with diacritics lovers create modern compositions filtered through historical aesthetics and, first of all, form of expression. A lot of folk-sounding choirs and chanting among rather minimalist instrumental settings. The most important here are the tribal drums adding up to the music's dynamics and almost metal-like pace. Although it's up to a point as in the final parts of some compositions, the real, modern metal plays its role. The third most important ingredient are violins, but it's not the melancholic ones, rather ones we know from folk music - lively and energetic. This avant-garde heavy metal that reaches far back to the past in search for inspirations is served by the French band and I can only say how glad I am they do so.

Dużo folkowo brzmiących chórów i wykrzykiwań wśród raczej minimalistycznej instrumentalnej oprawie. Taki awangardowy heavy metal, który sięga daleko w przeszłość w poszukiwaniu inspiracji serwują nam artyści z Francji, a mi pozostaje temu przyklasnąć.
